  • Having been fortunate enough to get a ticket to an upcoming double-bill performance by Tamasaburo-san at the Minamiza next week, I felt the urge to throw together a complication video using many of the recorded performances of his that I've seen. This video features mostly dance-dramas and solo dance performances, rather than some of his more theatrical work, and there are many clips from "Sagi Musume" which many consider to be his signature piece. (That, and it's also arguably the most beautifully filmed performance of his available! ^_^) For those of you who've never seen kabuki, enjoy some elements of its shockingly beautiful uniqueness. For those who have, please enjoy a tribute to one of the greatest onnagata in history.

Thank you for this Shayna, Bando is so beautiful that I can't take my eyes away. The compilation saved me from endless searches for his art.

I love him so much, wish to watch him performing live. But seems his last live performance was in 2022...

Thank you so much for the compilation - it reveals the vast spectrum of artistic representation of Tamasaburo-san! The performance reminded me of the vibe of the "Dolls" by Takeshi Kitano.

Thanks for watching! I am in the habit of listing my resources at the end of each of my videos. However, in case you couldn't make out the font, the name of the song is AA170 by Rin, from their Inland Sea album.

Ah, I'm slightly relieved, then. Thanks for the info, and thanks for the posts! :) I hope we'll have the chance to see him again live soon!

Just saw him last week in Kyoto at the Minami-za. Great compilation video! I thought I would mention though, for your description, it should be Bando-san. Japanese honorifics go with the last name, not the first name. For adults anyway. :)

Thanks very much for the comment. I just saw him last night at the Minamiza, as well! Quite a show, eh? Funny you should mention the name, though; my Japanese co-workers call eachother and their students by first names + 'san' on the end. I was specifically instructed to call my manager "Kaori-san", as well. I can understand how sticking it on the end would be more formal, though. Just that there's a number of "Bandos" in the industry, so that name alone doesn't feel sufficient for me. ;)

You saw the good stuff then, the kimono - the main highlight of the second floor was the childhood pictures and videos, and the third floor didn't really have much of note, just pictures. (My seat was on the third floor so I had a chance to see all of it, hah!) And thanks to your Japanese friend for the information, I didn't know that about public figures! (I got the program book too, couldn't resist!)

I think the band is called Rin (but I'm not sure). I found the song once and then lost track of it. I too am waiting on Lothriel's response. The music is beautiful.

I stupidly only looked at the exhibits on the first floor. It never even occurred to me to check the other levels. :( I settled for a souvenir book at the theatre, but for sure, I'll be looking to get hold of a DVD at the next opportunity! According to my Japanese friend who's conveniently here at the moment, there's actually no set rule; Lastname+san = more polite, but just like in the West, it's okay to call folks (especially more public figures, like actors) by first names, as well. *shrug*

Ah, we saw the same show, then! I wish I had understood it, but I bought the DVD which I will watch with commentary when I have time. It was quite the "Bando Tamasaburo Hour" but I didn't mind at all! What did you think of the exhibits around the theater? I think firstname-san is reserved for people you know...I WISH I was on a first name basis with him! I usually say Tamasaburo too, just not with the san. :)
