Trevor Haynes i loved the episode where Abbi agrees to go on an actual date with Trey and she has Bevers help her pick an outfit. After going through several outfits she puts on the blue dress and is like "I don't know why I didn't just put this one on first." 😂 I'm so glad she either chose not to return it or missed the return date.
That's not really a joke, though. It's just a character who actually rewear clothes... they did that to be more like real women as opposed to characters who never wear the same thing twice.
You missed the best Easter Egg of all time. In community "Beetlejuice" is said once in the first season, once in the second season and a third time in the third season and when it's said for a third time a character dressed as Beetlejuice walks by in the background.
Val is not Liza Minnelli. She's Judy Garland in Summer Stock. Kind of sad that you didn't drill down to get that one. Also, the "make out"/"package" callback is a callback to "Saving Private Ryan."
Most obvious running gag not mentioned is Abbi's roommate whom we've never seen but is mentioned repeatedly. Kinda like the neighbour in Home Improvement
This is one of my favorite shows and it's sad that I've had other guys tell me it's only a show for women. Sure, it's probably understood on a visceral level a lot more by women but funny is funny and this show is absolutely hilarious.
This under 10 minute youtube video is over analyzing something? I guess it's too much if you just want to enjoy comedy, but some people find this interesting. I get not caring much for this kind of content, but it hardly ruins your experience of comedy now does it?
+Matthew Barber (Honno) On top of it being really boring, it's a rather blatant advertisement for the show. They clearly are getting paid for this shit, and I don't think the one's paying for it got their money's worth. Good jokes and humor may make sense when analysed, but they stop making laughs once they are.
Xenath Cytrin whats wrong with advertising the show? its not like its shameless advertising, and its obvious to me that some real honest thought went into this video, and you can tell that the narrator loves the show on a personal level too. Logically talking about why you find something funny is the best way to show appreciation and love for it.
lol such a good point. that show is so built on those. like the first few times you watch i feel like you barely understand 50% of what they are actually doing/saying
This bitter ass commenters omfg Some people are actually interested in how comedy and screenplay writing works. Joke writing takes a little more than "that's funny I'll say this here" and for someone to take the time to show you how a favorite show of theirs crafted 3 different jokes using three different tools at the disposal of the writer, is pretty cool.
Dear Vox, You make all of these great videos for free. I've never commented on them, but it seems like a week ago you had 200k subscribers. (I think you actually did). I hope you aren't too busy to reply, but you're cool
I love this show for this reason. It's one of the reason I also love community, always sunny and archer. They are very good a consistency, so lots of running gags, call backs, and Easter eggs.
Great video and explanation of the call backs, running gags and easter eggs. Another running gag is when Ilana makes a call in the middle of a conversation with a boss. The first was at the temp agency, second was with the rich lady who gave Ilana her clothes.
I loved learning about all of these comedy writing techniques. Delightfully revealing and gratifying-for all those times I thought, “I see what ya did there.”
if you don't want to watch it, then dont watch it much less comment on how much you hate the concept of being informed about something you preemptively rejected.
Broad City Easter Egg: In S01E06 titled Stolen Phone, when Abbi and Ilana go to Central Park to find Abbi's phone, they get a caricature of Abbi carrying Ilana. Fast forward to S01E10 titled The Last Supper, Abbi carries Ilana out of the restaurant
one more garol moment. Remember the episode when Ilana dressed up and asked her brother to tell if its good or not in the shot? Can't remember which one it is. And Elliot was like why can't you ask Jaime. Garol was right behind them.
Great analysis of Broad City. Also Abi irl drew that map at the end, and draws the Broad City cartoon openings. She also drew that map for the B&B NYC guy.
Thanks for the video. Just wanted to mention regarding the season two opener dopleganger call back: In the season one finale Illana runs down her bucket list and mentions that she wants to be Asian, which the callback doppleganger is.
i love this show, but i didnt catch any of these gags/eggs :( maybe i should stop watching it in the same mental state that abbi and ilana are usually in, lol
I wonder where all the hate is coming from? As a non-viewer of the show, seeing what type of humor the writers are creating spark my interest to watch an episode. If you consider that advertisement, at least it wasn't don't superficially: "Hey! Check out this product we don't use ourselves!" Then again, I like watching people like Nerdwriter1. Seeing what happens behind-the-scenes, storyboards, the writer's desk, etc is interesting to me.
It's coming from the usual suspects, esp. when female or female centred/directed comedy. I.e ignorant, bored , lonely and or strangely bitter dude bros.
Broad City always looked too stupid or too niche (like you'd only really appreciate it if you lived in New York). But your video actually makes me think I might enjoy it. Thanks for this! (I guess I shouldn't be so quick to judge. This exact same scenario happened to me with 'Rick and Morty', which almost made me miss that show's brilliance!)
what i like about the show is that the situations are ridiculous enough to seem surreal but like half the audience can say they been their or they would react to it in the same way, like jeremy her crush ends up like to be pegged, her reaction had everyone laugh.
That Liza Minnelli inspired style is actually a direct recreation of her mother Judy garland. The song. Outfit, and dance is from the movie Summerstock. This video could have gone so much deeper into the show. Bingo Bronson, Lincolns jokes about removing all of his patients' teeth, Abbie's childhood pug references.
I liked this video! I sometimes can't put my finger on why I love something-and here is the perfect explanation! I also appreciate the compilation of Kenneth clips!
I've been a fan of _Broad City_ since literally day 1 (I watched the premiere episode live in 2014 and immediately fell in love) but seriously never caught the "Val" easter egg at 6:23. I would feel ashamed but I'm too busy having my mind blown.
Interesting. I love how Easter Eggs and Callbacks are in some shows, but never thought Broad City had them.Certainly have to go back and see what I missed.
There's a pretty good Easter egg is Tim and Eric's awesome show good job, with a character named Gord. In one episode, Dr.Steve Brule goes to a church for his segment called "Check It Out". While at the church he is talking about god and Jesus and "accidentally" continues saying Gord instead of God. This isn't unusual of Dr. Steve Brule to pronounce names wrong until I noticed that in another episode, a dreary dark character named Gord is advertising a product from a creepy continuous joke-of-a-company called Cinco. The product he is advertising was "Cinco Boy" for mothers who have recently lost their sons. What do you think, is Gord actually god?
Vox, stick to the political & social commentary as you lose credibility with this fluff piece just shilling for a current show, with an oh-so-knowing narrator in full-throated "frog-talk" "explaining" humor that sadly needs it because it is so preciously self-referential. This ain't Seinfeld. And anybody "hip" knows "Val" was the bartender prequel "egg" on SNL.
It's funny that you compare Abby's performance to Liza Minelli, because it's her mom Judy Garland does the same song and dance I. The same costume. You should do an episode like this on 30 Rock!!!!
Lol amazing video! Broad City is so funny! And when you mentioned running gags, I immediately thought of Arrested Development. Then you showed a clip from it!
You guys should make a video about the referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan. I think it's gonna shape the future of Middle East and me being a Kurdish person I don't know much about it. And I love ur channel btw.
I never noticed a lot of these - god I really love Broad City. It's just perfection. I should rewatch it simply to find the easter eggs and callbacks I never noticed lol
Man, what is wrong with people today? They spend all their time analyzing comedy rather than enjoyiong it for its comedic pleasure. Are people so stupid that you have concoct a diagram and video to explain it?
Gags and callbacks are different things. You can have a single gag or a running gag. You can have a single-layered callback or a multilayered callback. A callback does not necessarily become a gag (let alone a running one) just because it happens more than once.
liza minnelli? sis she was singing a song by judy garland dressed as judy garland in summer stock! the movie the song was preformed in! compared her to the wrong girl!
What about the rape joke in season 2? This article does a terrible job of explaining it. www.bustle.com/articles/58764-was-the-broad-city-rape-joke-offensive-some-fans-are-upset-but-i-think-theres-more
Another callback in Broad City is when Ilana brings an inflatable arm flailing tube man into the office in an early episode for office morale, and when they meet Hillary Clinton later in the series at her headquarters, Hillary does the same, dragging out an inflatable arm flailing tube woman to, again boost office morale.
This video is referencing general show writing tropes just to add a few extra minutes to the video. Also, it doesn't take 5 minutes to explain a call back, we're not assholes
I love broad city but this is so dumb that you have explain jokes to people. I'm pretty sure most people get the jokes and don't have to have it explained to them like they are children. just show the easter eggs next time.
why do people say it's chaotic everytime when they see a lot of people. I am Indian dude I don't even get a seat in bus because all seats are full from first stop. #IndianTalks
the dress!! when there's a special occasion that calls for a dress Abby always ultimately wears that blue one !
Trevor Haynes yeahh , I love that detail !
@@cheesecake134 she couldn't return it cz someone took the tag off
Yes- the blue dress is definitely a running gag🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
You missed the best Easter Egg of all time. In community "Beetlejuice" is said once in the first season, once in the second season and a third time in the third season and when it's said for a third time a character dressed as Beetlejuice walks by in the background.
We really wanted to include that one in the video, but, alas, it got too long! Great Easter egg though! Glad you mentioned it.
I'm glad you replied! Thanks for the acknowledgement.
+Sean Murphy That's funny, that happens in Community too!
I said it happened in community
Holy shit, Community. I will rewatch the entire thing for the third time and catch all these easter eggs, y'all.
Pretty sure archer is the king of the running joke. They use it constantly - Phrasing, read a book, danger zone - the list is almost endless.
Even you missed some easter egs, but the timing was perfect. I hope this bit have some recognition, as well.
Was after effects used to produce the Vox logo system for this video?
Val is not Liza Minnelli. She's Judy Garland in Summer Stock. Kind of sad that you didn't drill down to get that one. Also, the "make out"/"package" callback is a callback to "Saving Private Ryan."
HIMYM was the queen of callbacks
There are so many in How I Met Your Mother.
FUCKING. YES. QUEEN.
The hole of the green "O" in VOX at the beginning is way too small for my liking.
Missed that pepper spray callback...
Most obvious running gag not mentioned is Abbi's roommate whom we've never seen but is mentioned repeatedly. Kinda like the neighbour in Home Improvement
Holy crap that Val Easter egg just shook me to my core.
they also have call backs to their original webisodes, check them out on youtube
Another running joke is how trainers at Solstice always go missing! Lol. I LOVE that show. Pure genius, alway puts me in a good mood.
This is one of my favorite shows and it's sad that I've had other guys tell me it's only a show for women.
Sure, it's probably understood on a visceral level a lot more by women but funny is funny and this show is absolutely hilarious.
Funny, my brother actually is the one who introduced me to it!!!
i'm so glad they used arrested development for the running gags example. all time best lmao
Fuck, alright, alright. I'll watch broad city....
What's up with the hate? Cool video I'd say. O_O
because the worst thing you can do to a comedy is over analyze it
This under 10 minute youtube video is over analyzing something? I guess it's too much if you just want to enjoy comedy, but some people find this interesting. I get not caring much for this kind of content, but it hardly ruins your experience of comedy now does it?
+Matthew Barber (Honno) On top of it being really boring, it's a rather blatant advertisement for the show.
They clearly are getting paid for this shit, and I don't think the one's paying for it got their money's worth.

Logically talking about why you find something funny is the best way to show appreciation and love for it.
+Matthew Barber (Honno) YEAH WTF! I thought the video was awesome. I would have never found the Easter eggs otherwise.
You forgot the one when Abbi is pretending to be Ilana at the co-op and the lady who sets the tasks, asks Abbi to clean something in the bathroom
And she didn't do it because she's "a qwuan (queen)" 😂
If you keep doing Broad City analysis videos...I wouldn't exactly hate it! 😁
I remember scream laughing when I realized the old lady on the train called Abbi "Val". 😂😂😂
Actually "Val" is based on Judy Garland's character from Summer Stock, she's the one that sings "Get Happy". Not Liza Minelli lol
Like mother like daughter
Having watched every broad city epiode, I feel like this video was made for me. Also I have this massive crush on Abbi.
hi five dude!!! same here
Me, I'm smitten by Ilana.
How could you forget about its always sunny? That show is the best when it comes to callbacks and running gags!
lol such a good point. that show is so built on those. like the first few times you watch i feel like you barely understand 50% of what they are actually doing/saying
+dizzizzi12 exactly
ferrariteddy is that a hate crime?
Yeah, but that makes it hard to get people into it. I love that show, but my friend won't watch it because he doesn't get it
arrested development is the king of running gags, imo
This bitter ass commenters omfg

This may be the best analysis of sitcom writing that I've ever seen. Nice job!
I don't think it's overexplained, it 's reminded me what a brilliant show that is!
This made me watch Broad City and.... it's one of my favorite shows on TV
Dear Vox,
You make all of these great videos for free. I've never commented on them, but it seems like a week ago you had 200k subscribers. (I think you actually did). I hope you aren't too busy to reply, but you're cool
Virtual high five Austin!
+Austin Anderholt We're so glad to have you as a viewer Austin!
Man, lots of people dislike this analysis huh... well at least it's useful for a film student like me.
I love this show for this reason. It's one of the reason I also love community, always sunny and archer. They are very good a consistency, so lots of running gags, call backs, and Easter eggs.

All these chumps saying "UGH we GET it already!" did not notice all these jokes the first time and are just trying to feel superior.
One thing I love about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is that they have a ton of running gags and easter eggs too.
one more garol moment. Remember the episode when Ilana dressed up and asked her brother to tell if its good or not in the shot? Can't remember which one it is. And Elliot was like why can't you ask Jaime. Garol was right behind them.
can you do more videos like this on broad city? I love that show.
I wish racism was as simple to explain
Thanks Vox!!! I'm a diehard fan and this is just what I needed :) informative yet entertaining
Great analysis of Broad City.
Also Abi irl drew that map at the end, and draws the Broad City cartoon openings. She also drew that map for the B&B NYC guy.
Another Broad City video please! From fans in Tasmania
Thanks for the video. Just wanted to mention regarding the season two opener dopleganger call back: In the season one finale Illana runs down her bucket list and mentions that she wants to be Asian, which the callback doppleganger is.
This is probably my favorite sitcom since Seinfeld. I can't stand the usual Burbank setup->punchline->setup->punchline formula.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Rhombus, than are dreamt of in your labs.
Theres actually a few times in the series where old people notice Val, its pretty crazy how you dont notice it until you notice it.
i love this show, but i didnt catch any of these gags/eggs :(
maybe i should stop watching it in the same mental state that abbi and ilana are usually in, lol
THE VAL ONE HAD ME SHOOK i can’t believe i didn’t connect the dots

WOW!! I didn't even realize how well made Braod City was. #AWESOME

THIS IS MY FAVORITE SHOW!!!!!!!!! 😭😭😭💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓
There seems to be alot of hate for this video, just wanted to say, i enjoyed it and i've never seen the show. Anyways, love the vox channel :)
i love btoad city
fuck
Ftuck
Btoad city is my shit bro
+Esteban Estrada
I am openly skeptical of this claim.
+KEEP CALM and PLAY SOCCER IN YOUR PAJAMAS. whyj

What about the Christina callback ?
My favorite is the young kid with the "I
Broad city is brilliant
that opening was so funny
This should be called: Woman Learns What "Humor" Is, Now Explains Jokes to Everyone.
I've been a fan of _Broad City_ since literally day 1 (I watched the premiere episode live in 2014 and immediately fell in love) but seriously never caught the "Val" easter egg at 6:23. I would feel ashamed but I'm too busy having my mind blown.
I FUCKING LAAAAAVVVVV THIS
Same can be said about Always Sunny. Nothing makes this show special. I'm sorry.
Interesting. I love how Easter Eggs and Callbacks are in some shows, but never thought Broad City had them.Certainly have to go back and see what I missed.
Anything Broad City has my attention
Glazers out!!!!!!!!!!!

Surprised HIMYM wasn't mentioned once. They took such advantage of easter eggs, callbacks, AND running gags.
Doesn't seem to mention the master of running jokes, easter eggs, and callbacks, Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.... I wonder why?
Lol amazing video! Broad City is so funny! And when you mentioned running gags, I immediately thought of Arrested Development. Then you showed a clip from it!
Anyone watch the show "Love" on Netflix? Are the repeated references to Uber a running gag, repetitive product placement...or both?!!?
You guys should make a video about the referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan. I think it's gonna shape the future of Middle East and me being a Kurdish person I don't know much about it. And I love ur channel btw.
the "receiving news" callback is my favorite one, oh my god
it never fails to make me laugh
Okay okay I get it.
This video is about 4 minutes too long.
Speed it up then, dang. I was entertained by it.
3:37 OK, that line made me fucking LOL. Might have to give this show a chance.
Cool analysis, but honestly? No one cares. Don't sell out. Keep informing a programmed society, and help make the world more aware and less ignorant.
Jesus I feel so disappointed in myself!
Deceived myself into thinking I'm a die hard fan. But in fact, I'm just a 'faint hard' fan.
I never noticed a lot of these - god I really love Broad City. It's just perfection. I should rewatch it simply to find the easter eggs and callbacks I never noticed lol

Very interesting. Perhaps for the next video Vox could cover eggs and how we can instruct our Grandmother's to suck said eggs.
community, I think, is the best show to showcase running gags, callbacks and easter eggs. I feel like they build the show around it.
I feel like that explosion joke is'nt really a call back...I think they just recycled a joke. how green of them.
what kind of mouthbreathers are vox's demographic here? Do people really need to have the concept of a callback explained to them?
I love broad city but this is so dumb that you have explain jokes to people. I'm pretty sure most people get the jokes and don't have to have it explained to them like they are children. just show the easter eggs next time.
This seems more like a high school project...but thanks for explaining comedy to us?
Those are great uses of calbacks, running gags and easter eggs. Too bad they didn't have time to make the show funny, though.
why do people say it's chaotic everytime when they see a lot of people. I am Indian dude I don't even get a seat in bus because all seats are full from first stop. #IndianTalks
my favorite is that abbi is not actually jewish even though she is, because she (weirdly to ilana) knows a lot about christianity
wow great shilling there Vox
callback humor..HOW ORIGINAL!
Broad City reminds me of smoking drugs and my ex girlfriend... she wont call me back
Ha! I found the easter egg of val before hand. Psssh i already knew I was die hard , cant wait fo august!!!!
