I’m surprised how much I love this ship. It handles great and it feels kind of homey on the living quarters deck compared to any of the other starters. It definitely has me excited for the Railen in the future!
This is an awesome little ship, complete with a few unique quirks that help it stand out from the crowd. CIG knocked it out of the park with this one, and makes me excited for its big brother the Railen.
I just joined SC a couple of weeks ago and I bought this ship and the Avenger Titan during the holiday sale. The Syulen was selling for $72. I actually love this ship. I've flown this one the most. With 600+ hours in Elite Dangerous, takeoff and landing came natural. BTW, love the channel. Your reviews have helped me a lot.
Can confirm. Having lived by the mailslot for so long, the Syulen was my starter ship for a few reasons: LTI and because it was unique. It's launch may be different, but that's also why I love it. It's not a Python or Corvette, and despite not being fond of smaller ships in Elite, I completely enjoy flying the Syulen. It's bizarre being able to circle strafe and fly around like I'm in Descent. Oh, and the fact this thing can jump around like no one cares. The fuel tank on this thing is insanity. EDIT: Regarding price: just after free fly from the convention, it was $71 as a starter pack. Again, the LTI was what really pushed me on the idea, though I feel the Rambler will be an interesting thing to review, given it ALSO has LTI, but is far cheaper, with the downside being no vehicle and even less SCU space.
When I tried the Syulen it was really fun to land on pads in space and at outposts. I enjoyed pointing at the pad, decoupling and flipping 180°. I typically don’t like hangars with roof doors but this ship would really benefit from being able to land in and take off from that type of hangar.
@@indragominardi4047 Just about every station has external pads, though you won't get assigned one when calling for landing clearance. Think of them as 'hot pads' for a quick landing for repair/refuel. Assuming you can spot them of course. they also come in handy for picking up friends from a station as their personal marker can show you where the pads are assuming they take an elevator to one before you arrive.
I am SO excited to see more ships from this manufacturer. I have such a soft spot for the more organic / transforming ships! I own a Railen, but who knows when that will become a real thing.
I love my Syulen, it's a really great ship in my personal opinion. I really enjoy the landing and find you can just fly into a hangar or near to the ground, then pivot until you're facing upwards. After that, just turn down the power to the thrusters and you'll drop nicely to the ground. Thanks for another nice review, Farrister!
I'm really impressed with the ship design. The colors, textures, angles... it all mixes together very well. Thank you for this great review, Farrister!
Somehow missed this drydock! I have one of these and in the dark its absolutley beautiful to look at.. the lighting is unreal. Definitley a different ship experience. I didn't know 20% of the stuff you showed in the review.. fantastic job Farrister!
I love this thing! Certainly not the most intuitive to take off and land, but you get used to it, and it feels so unique. The sound design alone makes me love flying around in it. It’s like having a little convertible. Not the most practical car for getting a lot of groceries, but fun to drive around on the weekends.
I have one as my game package in a fairly large fleet and I think you nailed it: It's a great starter for people who already have other ships and just want something different, since its utility is sorely lacking next to any of its competitors. The one thing I would've placed more emphasis on is its fuel capacity, which is truly exceptional. It seems clearly designed to allow a player to stay out in Pyro's wilderness for extended periods without returning to port. The ability to fit a VK-00 alongside great atmo flight and a short claim time make it an excellent ferry ship. Thanks for keeping these videos going, Farrister! Been watching them ever since I got into the game and their quality is bar none.
Great ship review for an extremely fun ship. Top notch again! I have to say I have income to rely on your reviews as the most down to earth square deal I’ll hear on any ship. Continue to party!!
Thanks for the review! I think the Syulen is an amazingly unique little starter ship and although I love how different it is and how it sounds, it feels very claustrophobic. So I used it as an LTI stepping stone and now thanks to your review I can revisit it in a safe way, because it's easy to crash out of a hangar when you're not paying enough attention
Love the Syulen. As I've said in other content, as long as you can get used to landing on your back and not your butt it can do everything the non-vehicle moving starters can do. It's great.
My Starter Ship was a Cutter but I never played with it (needed a new PC) and by the time I acquired a new computer this ship was in the store so I turned what was probably the easiest ship to learn the game through for one of the hardest and honestly I wouldn't change a thing. I love the aesthetic, the design both reminded me of the Gorgons from Destiny 1 AND had a more Forward positioned Propulsion system which for some reason is my absolute favorite design in ships like the Naboo Starfighter. It feels nice in combat, I have better ships for that now but it's still a great piece. Being able to just blast off like a rocket off every planet or top-hanger is always funny to me, but leaving side-hangers is where I really feel like I'm a better pilot than I really am. When I first saw someone just immediately jettison themselves out of a New Babbage hanger while still facing straight up I had to learn how to do that every time. It's not that hard, just need to realize what direction you actually move when you strafe but it's always super satisfying when you do it. It makes me feel like I'm actually becoming a decent pilot as I get more acclimated with it.
Love the Syulen. It's fast, agile, has the same armaments as a Gladius. The Avenger and Nomad are the only ships that really come close, and on paper they both blow the Syulen out the water, but I think it is not a controversial statement that the Syulen just looks so much nicer and feels cozier (or just as cozy as the Nomad). Besides, it reminds me of Vex Harpies from Destiny, so that's cool.
It may not be the best, but it is easily my favorite starter ship of all the available options, simply because of the unique and beautiful alien design, and it makes me incredibly excited to see how the Railen will look.
Granted I have been playing for a long time so I'm familiar with a lot of the ins and outs of SC, but I do think the Syulen is a pretty good starter if the new player is an informed rookie. Someone that has done some research on the game and understands the little oddities of the Syulen will certainly find it to be something that will give them a nice step into the verse, especially if they want the ability to sample various gameplay loops before settling on a path. Even for experienced players that have several ships in their fleets, the Syulen makes for a fantastic ship for scooting around Stanton or using as a quick claim ship for moving from orbit to a landing zone.
Hey Farrister, love the content. I just want to say that the first chord in the song in all your videos is the exact same chord as the one from the start of Bo Burnham's "Sexting" and so every time I click on the video I think "seeeeexting, it isn't sex it's the next best thing" and then I have to go back and listen to how you introduced the video. Anyway I hope you're having a great day and sorry to anyone else reading this who now thinks of that song when watching a Farrister video.
Rather than fly in horizontal facing forward if your accustomed to 3rd person it's easier to fly in while already vertical basically flying downwards to go forward and basically moving and hovering like a saucer , this is my preferred style of landing as it's easier to level your ship 90 degrees faced up outside, what's more in 3rd person you will notice the camera is on an unfriendly angle but the devs got you covered as you rotate to horizontal top or in vertical the side that has the glyph the camera will rotate 90 degrees to make floating like a saucer easier... that being said theres a separate set of controls to learn, either way you decide to leave a hangar though vertical is my preferred there is no wrong way to land and take off with this ship both are applicable (even in a vertical hangar the horizontal pitch can be done) If your taking of horizontally in a vertical pitch here are the other controls you need to consider! when camera is facing the top (Glyphed Wing): W: Increase Altitude! S: Decrease Altitude! Left Ctrl: Forward Strafe! Space: Backwards Strafe! A, D: Left and Right Strafe! Mouse ^,v: Pitch Back, Pitch Forward! Mouse : Turn Left, Turn Right! Once you get it down it does feel intuitive I've not tried this on controller or my twin hotas with the syulen due to the free cam still being bugged for any type of stick in 3rd person (keeps turning the cam every time you leave the deadzone like it's in freecam this is a reoccurring bug so for now I recommend 1st person or using KB/M) [Fun Fact 1: If you change the lights in the "throne room" as some YTubers have put it, it changes the colour of the MFD's from their natural colour If you prefer something easier on the eyes set the lights in the throne room to yellow it gives the MFD's a much more dim lighting & sunset gold with purple is just cool, all rooms have a switch with lights the bedroom has 3 technically!] [Fun Fact 2: The engine in the cockpit sounds like the PS2 intro stuck on a single note!] [Fun Fact 3: The Syulen I have bought 2 my 2nd one is a none IAE placeholder LTI pledge for buying a 400i at a later date] [Fun Fact 4: After getting the Syulen IAE Warbond I was able to finally melt my original pledge i've had since 2.4.1 a pledge that started as an Package - Aurora MR SC Starter (at the time it just cost £29.25, which today is £43.20)] [Fun Fact 5: I later in 2.5/2.6 upgraded to the Avenger Titan before it's rework it was a beauty to fly back when asteroids had gravity I once landed my ship star wars style in an asteroids crater to escape a pursuer! But it was also a nightmare to get in as there was a small ladder up to the cockpit that was elevated but with a low ceiling you had to crouch in this could glitch you through and push you outside into space and just tapping your ship from the outside could send it spinning into the void of space] [Fun Fact 6: To escape this issue I upgraded again to a ship that still had it but only if you decided to jump in the cockpit which was far less often and so I became the proud owner of my main ship around 2015-16 the Freelancer Misc!, a couple of years back I upgraded it to a DUR!] [Fun Fact 7 (actually not really fun but here we go anyways): When you upgrade to a different ship in the same package it does not upgrade your insurance so my DUR only have 3 months on it instead of 6 months!] [Fun Fact 8: I have my own org and decided in my wisdom that my org needs a bigger ship for exploration so the money from the melted package and the rest is going towards the expedition pack] [Fun Fact 9: So it turned out that you pay more £ if your buying the expedition package or any package via saving Store Credit because it's in $ you can't pay the £ price you so have to pay the $ price which is around 250 more than if you bought it outright, luckily at least the OG package payed £150-200 of that off so it kinda evens out and theres a DUR that's gonna have LTI in the expedition package] [Fun Fact 10 - Finale: People who buy the Expedition package immediately qualify as a High Admiral the lowest rank of Concierge status which has multiple purchasing, social and even access perks meaning your now Wave 4 of PTU, you also get some cool style goodies including a black and gold concierge skin for the Syulen and a gold an black gun (also a top hat and monocle and whiskey for showing off in-game i'm not joking you can act like a sir!) you'll also be getting better tech support] The IAE Syulen is now my go to Solo ship I knew that it would be the moment I saw it during an IAE Syulen Review video Ollie43 did I was never interested in any of the other alien ships I thought they were cool but I never felt the urge to buy them and I got some money left over from something else that couldn't happen so I figured why not treat myself it was an early Christmas present to myself and by god it was a good one! sadly the game I did buy with my christmas money was BD3 Deluxe Edition but I bought it too late so I don't get mine till Q2 in the meantime I got 50 vids to edit and an ESO and fortnite membership this month to plough through once i'm done I am gonna focus more on the editing videos! when i've done a few i'm gonna begin uploading them and when they're all done I can finally start moving on to my content again recording new stuff and I plan to do streams of Star Citizen these are all on an alt channels this is just my chill watch videos and talk shit channel!
This is my current (pledged) daily driver, and it's pretty good. Though, it just boosts all the time, and I can't do anything about it. I've tried unbinding it, that didn't work I don't know what I did, but it works now. At least for the C2, I haven't been in the syulen for a little while
Another awesome review. Alien ships are great design marvels, this one included. Also I heard somewhere that that "sink" is supposed to be a Xi'an toilet. Not sure I want to wash my hands there. 😂
Great review! I love this little ship, its design is so unique. I thought that's a Xian scratch wall on the 1st level, but does it also double as a suit locker?
Mistakes happen, especially with alien design language! But I really liked your reviews, like all of them. They are very great to help see the ships before buying them! (I did buy this one first day)@@Farrister
I love my Syulen and the way you need to land or take off is not a problem for me. What i like much more is the alien look that make me remember about enemy alien ships look in old 80’ japanese cartoons, like for example “Tekkaman” (Uchu no Kishi Tekkaman)… it seems a Valdaster’s alien ship and sometime the engine noise is the same of that old ships 😂. Let’s be honest: to take off and land at 90 degrees is not so difficult as you can think, even using the external cam view, is very very easy: W to go up, S to go down, spacebar and CTRL sx to move left and right. About weapons: i replaces standards repeaters with ballistic guns and all the ship components with military’s one. The goal is to survive enough to go away with a quantum jump before to be blowed up by some player and it work good. About rockets: i use Infrared , pretty hard to decoy.
I picked up the Syulen and it's really cool, but I also upgraded my Cutter to a C1 at the same time and I spend a ton more time in that than my Syulen. Now that I'm getting a bit more into PvE combat though, I anticipate spending more quality time listening to my alien ship sing to me while we fly around the verse 😁 I actually like the landing, because I can fly right to where I want to be and then just turn 180 degrees and back down into the spot.
I've found my Syulen extremely easy to fly. Take offs and landings are a different story. Take offs are only difficult in side entry hangars and even then they are easy enough with a few steps. 1). Request take off 2). Use freelook to look at the hangar doors by looking between the players legs. 3). Wait for the hangar doors to fully open. While waiting set the ship speed limiter just above zero. 4). Once the hangar doors are open, press W (forward thrust) to lift the ship just off the pad. Once the ship is about 1 meter(yard) off of the pad you can hold control to strafe down and fly out of the hangar. Wait until you are full out of the hangar before trying any maneuvers. Landings are more difficult. The easy way is to engage landing mode. Fly straight into the hangar then hold N to auto land. Auto land only works on landing pads and hangars though. Landing out in the wild is all manual. If the ground is flat you can use the pitch indicator and set the ship pitch at 90° then press S to reverse to land. You can also press F4 and use the simulated 3rd person landing camera.
I wish the seat just went straight up then you can fly in landing mode like a lunar lander, then when retracting landing gear the seat swivels to normal flight mode
Perspective of a fresh player of two weeks ago, this is the only ship I've flown so far. When everything else is new and I'm learning how to play the game, this spacecraft's unique flight style is just added to the long list of confusing things. Since everything is new and challenging, I don't really freak out about low ground flying being very different. It's not a big deal.
Love the look. Not a daily driver for me though. I will stick to the c1. Would LOVE a videonall about stealth ships! I am flying a Saber right now. Thing is sweeeet. Just not too sure about what all is needed for "stelth" gameplay.
im thinking of upgrading my c8x pisces and im looking at the kore, this and the arrow and im just a little undecided (im also new to the game) ive seen your reviews for all 3, which would you recommend? the kore because it has space for a 2 slot scu box, the tractor beam and the respectable dps, the arrow for the pure fighter or this? if the kore had 12 scu instead of 6 the choice would be obvious, but because it and the syulen both have 6 im indecisive
The Syulen really cements how I hate CIG's use of the term "starter" to describe ships. Ships have size/physical dimensions as well as a "capability bracket" that aren't necessarily 1-to-1. CIG seems to just lump everything under a certain size/capability/price-point into the "starter" category, and as a result the term starts to lose meaning. Especially considering the Syulen is closest compared to the Nomad, another """Tier 2 Starter""" which is just an oxymoron.
I feel like they should've designed a way for the pilot seat to face down 90 degrees when the landing gear was deployed to make it easier to land, sorta like the Reliant series.
While it's certainly difficult to recommend the Syulen as a starter for an actual starting citizen due to its unique landing configuration, it's certainly an endearing unique ship that offers much more value than its utility. I certainly plan to keep one around for fun rides when I feel like it.
I wish they stuck with the engines a little longer; they could have done something like organ pipes where it more sounds like the ship is singing when it flies and just make it turn offable or dampened. They were SOOO close!
When they offered this ship with LTI and a skin and the game package for 72.50 it was a no brainer I bought 2 one for my son as a present and one for myself, this way if he or I wanted to melt another ship in his fleet and the game package he could and for me likewise,it's quite different looking and very detailed also very all around good ship.I changed out all of all the components, missiles and guns for better performance,First the powerplant.JS-300 military grade giving you a 3681 power pool in just 10 seconds now you will only need about 2025 for the build I am laying out meaning your power will be up to flight ready in about 6 seconds at 19700 credits at Orison,Military grade is suppose to be the most durable with redundant backup systems when all that comes to work in game, shields will be 2 of the FR-66 grade A military, max regen and a hp pool of 1725 also with the highest distortion shut down hp pool of 1344 also military grade also at Orison for 18450 credits, If you want Stealth go with the 7SA-Concord grade A stealth a regen pool of also 1725,next we have the coolers, only one and I thought this odd for most ships have two coolers of this size ship,Zero rush at 238k at 16150 credits at New Babbage or CLU l5 it's a competition cooler only grade B but it has a power request time of only 3 seconds the fastest in all the coolers and all the coolers have the same hp ,EM,IR, the only differences are the power request times and decay rates,Now the fastest decay rate cooler that is big enough is the Snowblind at 12850 credits at Orison is 170k cooling capacity at a 7.5 second request time, which is a Stealth grade A and would be my only other choice, the ship needs at least 160k as I loaded it out which it covers just.BTW request time is talking about how long from turning on your ship to bringing that component up to 100% of the amount on the component max limit ,so if the the JS-300 power supply has 3681 total it takes 10 seconds to get to max but if you only need say 2000 then it's only going to take about 6 seconds to get that before you can take off in your ship, this applies to all the components also this mean a power plant that has 4600 pool and takes 20 seconds to get to the max has generated the 2300 in 10 seconds or 230 per second so regen rates matter and how big they are matters but only to the point of what your ship needs and how fast you want it.,Decay rate pertains to EM signatures when everything is on and in use like the quantum drive you light up like a small sun on the enemies scope every 1 equals a meter so 10 kilometers out you are seen, you em can be over 10k but how fast it comes down is the decay rate so the higher the decay rate the better.Stealth ships are usually under 5k em and lower and certain ships get bonuses to stealth ,IR,EM sigs.Quantom drives next this ship has a huge tank which is great if you want to go fast the VK-00 at 43300 credits and at Orison is the fastest Q drive at 283046 km per second in size one component its A grade Military and will get you with this tank 134.5 MKm's which is the distance of measurement in the CGI universe for light travel or jumps.the farthest from one side to the other in a single jump is I believe 90MKm's so you refill at the other end,now if you want to go faster than the stock Q drive but want to be frugal go with the Atlas at 151951 km per second for 17900 at HUR-L5 I use it in alot of my ships the most efficient and fastest combo,Missiles are Rattlers ,IR area 18 or CRU l5, Dominator 2 EM new babbage, Area 18,Orison,Strike Force 2 cross-section at New Babbage ,Area 18, Orison,Guns I went with laser cannons, Omnisky IX,1295 range if you want a gun with more hp the Quarreler has 2850 hp this applies to its hp not the damage it does, they both do the same damage, but the Omnisky only has 1024 hp so the quarreler can take some damage before failing cost are 18650 per gun at Orison thats x 3,the Quarreler is 24250 at HUL-L5 x 3 but the quarreler range is 75 meters shorter than the Omnisky IX.Or ballistic choice would be 11 Series Broadsword at 26368 New Babbage or Area 18,hope this helped great video and take care everyone,
Thank you , It was a lot of fun and I just think most new players are a little overwhelmed with all the variables or don't even understand the difference in ship components and weapons systems and how they work, not to mention Crosssection,EM,IR,Decay rate, hp pool, distortion shut down damage for shields or other equipment and so on and everything is changing so fast it makes their heads spin lol and sometimes mine,Your approach to ship reviews is excellent BTW keep it up I love the Drydock series to I have a quite a few of the ships yet to be released and enjoy seeing the updates to them as far as we know lol.also it would be great to have a mini series on say the gold standard ships coming and the updates to them as well,I was waiting forever for my Freelancer ships to get the gold standard or at least news of the changes but have to call no joy there, but I am hopeful the last time I saw anything on the topic about a year or so ago, it looked like a major overhaul to the ship in length, width, height, entire cockpit, living quarters, docking area with suit lockers and weapons area, layout ,crew size ,remote turret in the rear,Cargo size, but then dead air it would be nice if they kept us updated on the ships we already purchased, just for the gold standard, they have got a lot of the ships done but are running behind on the older ship.PS I didn't even realize it till I bought these last two ships but I hit Space Marshal and about lost my shit and had to take a breath no Idea how much I had in this game since 2015 but would do it again I think without a doubt it is going to be the best space game ever made and will change game creation for all time let alone raise the bar for quality and content.Sometime in the future I will list my ships I have in game for real money as well as the ships that haven't been released yet, always a pleasure to watch and listen to you and hope you have a great week and weekend. You ,Boredgamer,Morpholigist, Citizenkate are my favorites and Erkul.games there are others to.
How would it go, not as a standalone starter but as someone starting to play with a friend or friends in co-op? Say the existing player has a salvage or miner and would like some support both for running cargo and firepower. Would there be a better ship in that role?
Hi, last night I spent one hour trying to load 1SCU Cargo box on syulen but there was no CARGO GRID on outside cargo bays (some UA-cam videos shows cargo snapping to grid automatically) and even if I manage to store it without a grid it seems the cargo will fall. Can someone help me how to load properly. Trying on 3.23.1 live.
@@Farrister well I tested out the bigger gravity gun out on the ptv. Then an idea spark! What if the ptv could fit in gravity cargo hold, which it did but fell through the hole. Which it had me thinking it could potentially carry buggy size vehicle if cig can implant that to all alien ships with their unique use gravity cargo. Like the covenant from halo serious but with detailed functionality in SC
I'm kinda surprised that the Syu'len didn't become the loaner for the Railen when it came out. Sure, the Khartu-al is already a Xi'an ship design but the Syu'len is closer to the Railen in just about every way.
I wish it had a bit more storage, maybe double? Make arbitrage a bit easier as a newbie, bootstrap a bit faster And the poor thing is rather fragile if you're in pvp. But those are my only sticking points, it's got a lot going for it in other ways and as a starter I'm 90% cool with my first ship, might've gone for the nomad but no biggie and upgrades are helpful, if it proves to be not your thing. Personally dig the way the engines sing as you accelerate its pretty fun and I sometimes mix it into the jam I've going in the background.
I love alien ships and Gatac and this ship is revolutionary but personally I passed on this ship as it has a learning curve for take off and landing for noobs. And it's a bit small for me personally
This is one of my favoret ships, i only have 2 issues with it. Both havecto do with cargo. 1) There is no way to fit a veichle on it. 2) the cargo grid only accepts 1 scu boxes. Which are kinda rare. Almost all dhips use 2 scu boxes or higher, so looting bounties with it is pretty much out of the question. You can't even put 1/4 scu boxes on the grid. Don't get me wrong it is convient that you can easily access 1 scu box storage without having to pull the boxes off the grid, or open your veichle. And I've seen pirates completely over look this grid when they killed me when doing bunker missions.
@@Farrister Thank you for replying to me. I love your video format, the calm narration, the pacing and music. Great production! I've been watching these reviews for many years and they are my absolute favorite part of the channel. Mustang alpha is the cheapest here 42€. Is the Arrow still the most agile fighter there is? Or has it been replaced by something faster? :)
I almost loved it as I flew it around. However, it was far too cramped inside, and the cargo being limited to individual 1 SCU boxes was ho-hum. I don't dislike it, I'd be fine to have it eventually, but I'd never consider it to be a proper Starter and there are simply better choices around its price. Oh, and apparently the dangly bits are fragile and that wrecks its maneuverability, though I didn't do combat with it myself.
I enjoyed this ship a lot but still think that Titan is my number 1, Syulen is number 2, btw it purrs when you flying and plays music 🎵🎶 when you boost
All alien ships are freaking cool, but when I immerse myself more into the game I hate their cold design. My favorite gameplay in space games is exploration(unfortunately nonexistent for now in SC) and if I had to be out in the dark for weeks or even months, I want my ship to be cozy =D
Literally the only problems i had with the ship is the weird landing angle and the fact that despite the respectable firepower if you lose a wing its like trying to drive a shop scooter with a jet engine on the side. (Flips like crazy)
Pressing F4 to enter 3rd person view mode removes 99% of the awkwardness of taking off and landing the Syulen, and the unique take off and landing dynamic does not equate to difficulty when flying as is suggesting here a few times. In fact the Syulen has some of the most luxurious and forgiving flight characteristics in the game. I also can't help but notice the glossing over of bunker/settlement contracts here. The dichotomy of ship-to-ship combat versus box/cargo missions is way too reductionist. The Syulen has an interior with internal storage, a bed, a washroom, a very good flight model, gun racks, and cargo space which can also be used for loot storage crates. It's also highly capable in combat. These features combined with the small and conveniently triangular footprint (allowing you to land virtually anywhere) make the Syulen an extremely viable daily driver. A player willing to pay the hefty price for a _Khartu-al_ (for instance) is likely doing it to sport the unique alien cosmetic, but the Syulen is far more than just a gimmick ship.
That's true - for those who use third person view, it's a different experience. And that's a good point about the bunker contracts, although maybe it's my inexperience in that area, I prefer ships that have a medical bed aboard (eg C8R)
I don't know what to think of the Syulen. It has some interesting quirks and decent enough components but also a huge profile and those quirks can cause you to crash because you're so used to the regular style. And turtle people landing on their backs sounds so weird.
Here is a problem you didn't mention when fighting NPCs. The jousting When facing npcs they tend to turn and fly directly ar you while firing. Normally this isn't a problem as you return fire then title the shop to avoid impact. With this ship I did that but the large "wings" were exposed and I lost 2 of em. Losing wings on this ship causes a dramatic shift in its controls. It was nearly impossible to steer in zero G and I presume worse in atmosphere. Now that I know this I need to learn to be more careful in combat. Its not a deal breaker just something worth mentioning. Some ships seem to be decently ok in zero G without a wing, this ship is not one.
Greetings Farrister. o7. I know it's been a while since I've posted. I have been watching your videos, but on a television and couldn't post from there. The Gatac Syulen is an interesting ship, with the shape and the unique vertical landing and take off. Frankly, for me, I haven't really been very interested in any of the ships that are put out by alien collaboration. I've flown several of them, and I wasn't impressed. I know there are some players that are really into alien ships, but I'm not one of them. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against aliens in the game, I just don't care for the ships. To me they seem flimsy and weird to fly. Of course that's just my personal opinion, and everyone has one. I won't hold it against them. Take care my friend, fly safe, and I'll see you in the verse.
Really good video, have to say the Nomad is just superior in every way - except that damn alien style, which does look great. Not a fan of the SFX, unnecessary cargo racks, and stupidly small buttons in the syulen. It is a lot of fun to fly though
There are 'starters' and then there are base capabilities you will always need. Huge Q tank and fast claim time are not really something you will outgrow.
Nice little ship. Very nice design, good handling and guns. However since the sounds of its thrusters cause me a pretty bad headache its a pass for me.
I was fine with the ship until the controls immediately went all wonky for the VTOL take off. I noped right out of the seat at that point. Nothing against the ship. Just not for me.
Yeah…. Your incorrect thought was it’s VTOL. Its not. It’s just straight forward. You’ve given up on an extremely fun ship because you misunderstood what button to use to take off and land….
@@charliemcawesome5012 It takes off and lands vertically. Did I say "I couldn't figure out how to take off"? No. I said I didn't like how the camera functioned. You know, cause you have to use the camera to see what's around you? Your points are mute, and your condescending tone is unappreciated. It's a game. We can all enjoy it differently.
The ship is definetly hard to land and take off with, but it comes with an unique style. I love the ship for cruising around, maybe doing some pve bounties or bunkers. Wouldn't recommend it to a new player though.
I picked this ship up and I enjoy it however multi purpose ships outshine it. Landing for a notice is extremely hard especially planet side without visual markers like a hanger roof. Third person helps but when you learning to fly you are already juggling with buttons as you land. I personally decided to upgrade and I'm sure its a good in game purchase. I found it lacking as a pure pvp/arena because of its large size. You are able to outfly most ships however once in view you are hard to miss. Overall I say its a 5/10 however its a beautiful ship. The cargo grid also would make this a terrible ship to have alone. Have a good day and that's my opinion summed up. Buy a freelancer Max would be my pick for those who want a ship that can do it all. I believe the ship after the rework will raise in price. Buy it at Invictus in May for $180 with 120 month insurance :)
@@Farrister Shes my favourite "upgrade" ship. Once your wanting to move onto a bigger ship the freelancer is a great choice. You need to remember though that the rework will probably increase the price. Also I'm excited to see what the DUR variant will turn into. Also CIG has stated its the largest ship to fit into the smallest quantum travels. which means nothing now but in the future it will play a huge part in your mobility to roam. Im guessing the larger jump points will have pirates waiting. However at the moment the cargo hold is amazing to fit tons of cargo plus a vehicle. Plus the MAX has a docking collar.
I’m surprised how much I love this ship. It handles great and it feels kind of homey on the living quarters deck compared to any of the other starters. It definitely has me excited for the Railen in the future!
A starter ship, with 3 decks!
This is an awesome little ship, complete with a few unique quirks that help it stand out from the crowd.
CIG knocked it out of the park with this one, and makes me excited for its big brother the Railen.
For sure!
Thanks :) and welcome, CMDR!
@@FlameSoulis Another reason I like the look of it is that it reminds of a Thargoid ship.
@@FlameSouliswhat I'd give to get a Viper Mk IV or Federal Assault Ship in this game. lol
When I tried the Syulen it was really fun to land on pads in space and at outposts. I enjoyed pointing at the pad, decoupling and flipping 180°. I typically don’t like hangars with roof doors but this ship would really benefit from being able to land in and take off from that type of hangar.
What station has landing pads ?
The vertical hangars work great
@@indragominardi4047 Just about every station has external pads, though you won't get assigned one when calling for landing clearance.
That's what I kinda do too! Thanks
I'm really impressed with the ship design. The colors, textures, angles... it all mixes together very well. Thank you for this great review, Farrister!
Aesthetically, wonderful!
A big convertible maybe!
Thanks, agreed on fuel capacity, although it's a little early to be super useful, at least until Pyro!
Great ship review for an extremely fun ship. Top notch again! I have to say I have income to rely on your reviews as the most down to earth square deal I’ll hear on any ship.
Continue to party!!
Party on!
Since I purchased the Gatac Syulen during IAE, this has become my daily driver. It is simply a fantastic ship to jet around in. Love it!
Once you're used to the landing mechanic!
Its so good im having a blast with it.
I'm glad!
Good video on the Syulen from Gatac, here's hoping there are more ships from this manufacturer. Thank you for an excellent tour and information.
Thanks, hope so too!
I've really been looking forward to this review, thank you. o7
Hope you enjoyed it!
I joined a month ago and learned everything on Syulen, I love it
Impressive!
Love all your vids thanks for making them!
My pleasure!
Not so claustrophobic if you are a space turtle...
Thanks!
Thanks for the thanks!
Thanks for doing the review on the syulen it really helped me 🎉
My pleasure 😊
This one looks massive! So I can't wait to see how the Railen stacks up!
Railen looks intriguing!
I love this ship but I spent 20 minutes looking for the cargo hold. I didn’t realize it was outside 😅
Love the Syulen. As I've said in other content, as long as you can get used to landing on your back and not your butt it can do everything the non-vehicle moving starters can do. It's great.
Yup!
Once you get your head around it, it's OK
Thanks for taking the time to give us your experience! Love reading more than just 2 sentences to a comment.
One of the highly polished ships I have ever seen. Really shines.
Plus, back scratcher on board...
I have 3 pledges. A Syulen, Corsair, and F7C MKll. I always find myself gravitating to my syulen as a daily driver.
Oh fun - enjoying the Mk2 Hornet?
I love the design and really hope they redesign the Railen to be vertically oriented also.
Railen hype!
I can understand that!
Is it crazy that my love of this ship has caused me to love the Defender far more and now i fly the Defender all the time. all because i love this one
Now I want to revisit the Defender lol
@@Farrister I want ya to. A few USC peeps and I did some Orison platform missions and Grumbelbum hovered above givin aerial support. Very good time.
It may not be the best, but it is easily my favorite starter ship of all the available options, simply because of the unique and beautiful alien design, and it makes me incredibly excited to see how the Railen will look.
I'm so interested in the Railen!
I look forward to your review once it comes out!
For an experienced rookie, maybe!
One of the ships I definitely won't replace. I like the ship. Precisely because it is so different. :)
Good choice!
Haha, thankfully I don't know that one!
Rather than fly in horizontal facing forward if your accustomed to 3rd person it's easier to fly in while already vertical basically flying downwards to go forward and basically moving and hovering like a saucer , this is my preferred style of landing as it's easier to level your ship 90 degrees faced up outside, what's more in 3rd person you will notice the camera is on an unfriendly angle but the devs got you covered as you rotate to horizontal top or in vertical the side that has the glyph the camera will rotate 90 degrees to make floating like a saucer easier... that being said theres a separate set of controls to learn, either way you decide to leave a hangar though vertical is my preferred there is no wrong way to land and take off with this ship both are applicable
(even in a vertical hangar the horizontal pitch can be done)
If your taking of horizontally in a vertical pitch here are the other controls you need to consider! when camera is facing the top (Glyphed Wing):
W: Increase Altitude!
S: Decrease Altitude!
Left Ctrl: Forward Strafe!
Space: Backwards Strafe!
A, D: Left and Right Strafe!
Mouse ^,v: Pitch Back, Pitch Forward!
Mouse : Turn Left, Turn Right!
Once you get it down it does feel intuitive I've not tried this on controller or my twin hotas with the syulen due to the free cam still being bugged for any type of stick in 3rd person (keeps turning the cam every time you leave the deadzone like it's in freecam this is a reoccurring bug so for now I recommend 1st person or using KB/M)
[Fun Fact 1: If you change the lights in the "throne room" as some YTubers have put it, it changes the colour of the MFD's from their natural colour If you prefer something easier on the eyes set the lights in the throne room to yellow it gives the MFD's a much more dim lighting & sunset gold with purple is just cool, all rooms have a switch with lights the bedroom has 3 technically!]
[Fun Fact 2: The engine in the cockpit sounds like the PS2 intro stuck on a single note!]
[Fun Fact 3: The Syulen I have bought 2 my 2nd one is a none IAE placeholder LTI pledge for buying a 400i at a later date]
[Fun Fact 4: After getting the Syulen IAE Warbond I was able to finally melt my original pledge i've had since 2.4.1 a pledge that started as an Package - Aurora MR SC Starter (at the time it just cost £29.25, which today is £43.20)]
[Fun Fact 5: I later in 2.5/2.6 upgraded to the Avenger Titan before it's rework it was a beauty to fly back when asteroids had gravity I once landed my ship star wars style in an asteroids crater to escape a pursuer! But it was also a nightmare to get in as there was a small ladder up to the cockpit that was elevated but with a low ceiling you had to crouch in this could glitch you through and push you outside into space and just tapping your ship from the outside could send it spinning into the void of space]
[Fun Fact 6: To escape this issue I upgraded again to a ship that still had it but only if you decided to jump in the cockpit which was far less often and so I became the proud owner of my main ship around 2015-16 the Freelancer Misc!, a couple of years back I upgraded it to a DUR!]
[Fun Fact 7 (actually not really fun but here we go anyways): When you upgrade to a different ship in the same package it does not upgrade your insurance so my DUR only have 3 months on it instead of 6 months!]
[Fun Fact 8: I have my own org and decided in my wisdom that my org needs a bigger ship for exploration so the money from the melted package and the rest is going towards the expedition pack]
[Fun Fact 9: So it turned out that you pay more £ if your buying the expedition package or any package via saving Store Credit because it's in $ you can't pay the £ price you so have to pay the $ price which is around 250 more than if you bought it outright, luckily at least the OG package payed £150-200 of that off so it kinda evens out and theres a DUR that's gonna have LTI in the expedition package]
[Fun Fact 10 - Finale: People who buy the Expedition package immediately qualify as a High Admiral the lowest rank of Concierge status which has multiple purchasing, social and even access perks meaning your now Wave 4 of PTU, you also get some cool style goodies including a black and gold concierge skin for the Syulen and a gold an black gun (also a top hat and monocle and whiskey for showing off in-game i'm not joking you can act like a sir!) you'll also be getting better tech support]
The IAE Syulen is now my go to Solo ship I knew that it would be the moment I saw it during an IAE Syulen Review video Ollie43 did I was never interested in any of the other alien ships I thought they were cool but I never felt the urge to buy them and I got some money left over from something else that couldn't happen so I figured why not treat myself it was an early Christmas present to myself and by god it was a good one! sadly the game I did buy with my christmas money was BD3 Deluxe Edition but I bought it too late so I don't get mine till Q2 in the meantime I got 50 vids to edit and an ESO and fortnite membership this month to plough through once i'm done I am gonna focus more on the editing videos!
when i've done a few i'm gonna begin uploading them and when they're all done I can finally start moving on to my content again recording new stuff and I plan to do streams of Star Citizen these are all on an alt channels this is just my chill watch videos and talk shit channel!
Awesome post! Enjoyed reading while sipping some single malt.
Love my Syulen. Sure, it's not a great pvp fighter, but the look alone and the maneuverability makes it a satisfying purchase.
I can see that :)
Light controls. They allow internal color scheme changes. they are very noticeable on the bed floor and flying but it’s nice for a custom vibe
Doesn't impact performance though :(
Wow, that thing is bigger than I thought it would be.
The three lighting modes in the pilot section also changes colors while flying: purple, yellow, red
Feel like you are going faster, without actually going faster xD
This is my current (pledged) daily driver, and it's pretty good.
Though, it just boosts all the time, and I can't do anything about it. I've tried unbinding it, that didn't work
I don't know what I did, but it works now. At least for the C2, I haven't been in the syulen for a little while
Oh, I haven't experienced that one!
Fascinating, I love this ship and I think I will upgrade from my other starter ship 👾
This is a kool looking ship, I bet once learn to fly it, you will enjoy you time in it. I may think about this ship later on in game.
Maybe for aUEC?
Not sure if you noticed but you missed the second component room on the third floor
D'oh!
love your videos
Thank you
Thanks farrister you are the best

Another awesome review. Alien ships are great design marvels, this one included.
Also I heard somewhere that that "sink" is supposed to be a Xi'an toilet. Not sure I want to wash my hands there. 😂
"sink" is right xD
I’m glad the Syulen exists, but I wouldn’t trade my Nomad for it.
I can see that
Great review! I love this little ship, its design is so unique. I thought that's a Xian scratch wall on the 1st level, but does it also double as a suit locker?
It is a suit locker! :)
Oh I thought it was the locker!
Mistakes happen, especially with alien design language! But I really liked your reviews, like all of them. They are very great to help see the ships before buying them! (I did buy this one first day)@@Farrister
Great fid farister always verry helpfull
Thanks!
For an experienced pilot, it's really no big deal. But it does change the way you have to think about flying it
I picked up the Syulen and it's really cool, but I also upgraded my Cutter to a C1 at the same time and I spend a ton more time in that than my Syulen. Now that I'm getting a bit more into PvE combat though, I anticipate spending more quality time listening to my alien ship sing to me while we fly around the verse 😁
I actually like the landing, because I can fly right to where I want to be and then just turn 180 degrees and back down into the spot.
Singing xD
I've found my Syulen extremely easy to fly. Take offs and landings are a different story. Take offs are only difficult in side entry hangars and even then they are easy enough with a few steps.
1). Request take off
Now I want to fly a lunar lander lol
Perspective of a fresh player of two weeks ago, this is the only ship I've flown so far. When everything else is new and I'm learning how to play the game, this spacecraft's unique flight style is just added to the long list of confusing things. Since everything is new and challenging, I don't really freak out about low ground flying being very different. It's not a big deal.
Fair enough!
Star Citizen ASMR 🤤
reminds me of a gundam somehow, when are we getting gundams?
Love the look. Not a daily driver for me though. I will stick to the c1. Would LOVE a videonall about stealth ships! I am flying a Saber right now. Thing is sweeeet. Just not too sure about what all is needed for "stelth" gameplay.
Like stealth mechanics?
im thinking of upgrading my c8x pisces and im looking at the kore, this and the arrow and im just a little undecided (im also new to the game)
ive seen your reviews for all 3, which would you recommend? the kore because it has space for a 2 slot scu box, the tractor beam and the respectable dps, the arrow for the pure fighter or this? if the kore had 12 scu instead of 6 the choice would be obvious, but because it and the syulen both have 6 im indecisive
I know what you mean :(
I feel like they should've designed a way for the pilot seat to face down 90 degrees when the landing gear was deployed to make it easier to land, sorta like the Reliant series.
Landed by aliens :D
While it's certainly difficult to recommend the Syulen as a starter for an actual starting citizen due to its unique landing configuration, it's certainly an endearing unique ship that offers much more value than its utility. I certainly plan to keep one around for fun rides when I feel like it.
Agreed
wow, i cant believe its got so much interior
Surprising!
I wish they stuck with the engines a little longer; they could have done something like organ pipes where it more sounds like the ship is singing when it flies and just make it turn offable or dampened. They were SOOO close!
I love that idea!
When they offered this ship with LTI and a skin and the game package for 72.50 it was a no brainer I bought 2 one for my son as a present and one for myself, this way if he or I wanted to melt another ship in his fleet and the game package he could and for me likewise,it's quite different looking and very detailed also very all around good ship.I changed out all of all the components, missiles and guns for better performance,First the powerplant.JS-300 military grade giving you a 3681 power pool in just 10 seconds now you will only need about 2025 for the build I am laying out meaning your power will be up to flight ready in about 6 seconds at 19700 credits at Orison,Military grade is suppose to be the most durable with redundant backup systems when all that comes to work in game, shields will be 2 of the FR-66 grade A military, max regen and a hp pool of 1725 also with the highest distortion shut down hp pool of 1344 also military grade also at Orison for 18450 credits, If you want Stealth go with the 7SA-Concord grade A stealth a regen pool of also 1725,next we have the coolers, only one and I thought this odd for most ships have two coolers of this size ship,Zero rush at 238k at 16150 credits at New Babbage or CLU l5 it's a competition cooler only grade B but it has a power request time of only 3 seconds the fastest in all the coolers and all the coolers have the same hp ,EM,IR, the only differences are the power request times and decay rates,Now the fastest decay rate cooler that is big enough is the Snowblind at 12850 credits at Orison is 170k cooling capacity at a 7.5 second request time, which is a Stealth grade A and would be my only other choice, the ship needs at least 160k as I loaded it out which it covers just.BTW request time is talking about how long from turning on your ship to bringing that component up to 100% of the amount on the component max limit ,so if the the JS-300 power supply has 3681 total it takes 10 seconds to get to max but if you only need say 2000 then it's only going to take about 6 seconds to get that before you can take off in your ship, this applies to all the components also this mean a power plant that has 4600 pool and takes 20 seconds to get to the max has generated the 2300 in 10 seconds or 230 per second so regen rates matter and how big they are matters but only to the point of what your ship needs and how fast you want it.,Decay rate pertains to EM signatures when everything is on and in use like the quantum drive you light up like a small sun on the enemies scope every 1 equals a meter so 10 kilometers out you are seen, you em can be over 10k but how fast it comes down is the decay rate so the higher the decay rate the better.Stealth ships are usually under 5k em and lower and certain ships get bonuses to stealth ,IR,EM sigs.Quantom drives next this ship has a huge tank which is great if you want to go fast the VK-00 at 43300 credits and at Orison is the fastest Q drive at 283046 km per second in size one component its A grade Military and will get you with this tank 134.5 MKm's which is the distance of measurement in the CGI universe for light travel or jumps.the farthest from one side to the other in a single jump is I believe 90MKm's so you refill at the other end,now if you want to go faster than the stock Q drive but want to be frugal go with the Atlas at 151951 km per second for 17900 at HUR-L5 I use it in alot of my ships the most efficient and fastest combo,Missiles are Rattlers ,IR area 18 or CRU l5, Dominator 2 EM new babbage, Area 18,Orison,Strike Force 2 cross-section at New Babbage ,Area 18, Orison,Guns I went with laser cannons, Omnisky IX,1295 range if you want a gun with more hp the Quarreler has 2850 hp this applies to its hp not the damage it does, they both do the same damage, but the Omnisky only has 1024 hp so the quarreler can take some damage before failing cost are 18650 per gun at Orison thats x 3,the Quarreler is 24250 at HUL-L5 x 3 but the quarreler range is 75 meters shorter than the Omnisky IX.Or ballistic choice would be 11 Series Broadsword at 26368 New Babbage or Area 18,hope this helped great video and take care everyone,
Great notes - perhaps even longer than my review script!
Nice.. glad you're invested, and fun to read your post, most of it 😅
How would it go, not as a standalone starter but as someone starting to play with a friend or friends in co-op?
Say the existing player has a salvage or miner and would like some support both for running cargo and firepower.
Would there be a better ship in that role?
With only 6 SCU of storage, not great...
I wonder if it is possible to get/glitch a X1 force inside of a syulen , it is possible to get one in the back of a Rambler .
I wouldn't like to try!
Honestly the gravity cargo could carry a ptv if cig implant it in or possibly stv
How would that work?
@@Farrister well I tested out the bigger gravity gun out on the ptv. Then an idea spark! What if the ptv could fit in gravity cargo hold, which it did but fell through the hole. Which it had me thinking it could potentially carry buggy size vehicle if cig can implant that to all alien ships with their unique use gravity cargo. Like the covenant from halo serious but with detailed functionality in SC
4:18 My first thought is that's a urinal...
Almost...
I'm kinda surprised that the Syu'len didn't become the loaner for the Railen when it came out. Sure, the Khartu-al is already a Xi'an ship design but the Syu'len is closer to the Railen in just about every way.
Maybe at some point?
I never ever land in first person. So landing that ship was never a problem.
Fair enough! I almost exclusively land in first person :)
Yeah, 6 SCU isn't a lot - and the fact that the current delivery boxes don't strap in is a bit disappointing. But a fun ship to fly!
the Syulen also comes w free HRT
HRT?
@@Farrister Hormone replacement therapy! :D
I love alien ships and Gatac and this ship is revolutionary but personally I passed on this ship as it has a learning curve for take off and landing for noobs. And it's a bit small for me personally
Yeah, understandable
This or orion i100, MUSTANG ALPHA or C8X PISCES? I care mostly about movement and combat.
Honestly of those, I'd choose the cheapest, and use it to work your way up to fighters in game.
@@Audiosenses69 I'm not quite sure because master modes has changed so much, and I think everything will be tuned further!
@@Farrister Okay, thank you! :)
@@Farrister Just downloaded the game to go fly for free during the event! :)
Interesting. But I think I'll stick to my Nomad. Especially since I did a lot of box delivery missions.
Nomad space at back is way more useful
I almost loved it as I flew it around. However, it was far too cramped inside, and the cargo being limited to individual 1 SCU boxes was ho-hum. I don't dislike it, I'd be fine to have it eventually, but I'd never consider it to be a proper Starter and there are simply better choices around its price. Oh, and apparently the dangly bits are fragile and that wrecks its maneuverability, though I didn't do combat with it myself.
Yeah, and I couldn't get the delivery boxes to snap either, so they only seem to work for actual cargo
I enjoyed this ship a lot but still think that Titan is my number 1, Syulen is number 2, btw it purrs when you flying and plays music 🎵🎶 when you boost
Titan is great
aixi m'agrade ndeu
Now you gotta tell me what it means xD
The easyest way is "Thats how it's fucking done". A well structured video@@Farrister
Decent range? It's wild for a its size.
Yup!!
All alien ships are freaking cool, but when I immerse myself more into the game I hate their cold design. My favorite gameplay in space games is exploration(unfortunately nonexistent for now in SC) and if I had to be out in the dark for weeks or even months, I want my ship to be cozy =D
To be fair, Syulen fuel stores would help massively with thay
Where do I buy it from?
Just waiting for it to be available in-game
@@Farrister Yeah, the C8R is awesome for bunkers. It's one of those ships I bought on a whim and just clicked with.
I don't know what to think of the Syulen. It has some interesting quirks and decent enough components but also a huge profile and those quirks can cause you to crash because you're so used to the regular style.
And turtle people landing on their backs sounds so weird.
Lol turtle people xD
Here is a problem you didn't mention when fighting NPCs.
The jousting
When facing npcs they tend to turn and fly directly ar you while firing.
Take care my friend, fly safe, and I'll see you in the verse.
o7
id realy like more alien ships in general.... what is space without aliens.... =P but they syulen is quite nice to fly
Aliens!
This ship is for people that want to fly a U F O.
It's a pretty good ship, to be fair to it
I call it the 420 ship, but I'm sure you can fly it with any hallucinogens, or just get high on the ship itself.
That reference sadly lost on me!
Really good video, have to say the Nomad is just superior in every way - except that damn alien style, which does look great. Not a fan of the SFX, unnecessary cargo racks, and stupidly small buttons in the syulen. It is a lot of fun to fly though
Nomad is a real competitor, I think
There are 'starters' and then there are base capabilities you will always need.
Huge Q tank and fast claim time are not really something you will outgrow.
2nd floor needs a window soo BADLY! .. It just asking to be there... next to bed.. such a shame we wont get one
Purple.
Purple!
PURPLE 💜
Nice little ship. Very nice design, good handling and guns.
However since the sounds of its thrusters cause me a pretty bad headache its a pass for me.
Oh really? I hadn't experienced that!
@@Farrister
Yeah. No idea why tho.
Must be some kind of high pitch frequency or something.
I was fine with the ship until the controls immediately went all wonky for the VTOL take off. I noped right out of the seat at that point. Nothing against the ship. Just not for me.
Its actually really easy once you get used to it - hosas user
It's an acquired skill!
The ship is definetly hard to land and take off with, but it comes with an unique style.
I love the ship for cruising around, maybe doing some pve bounties or bunkers.
Wouldn't recommend it to a new player though.
Agreed!
Oh I need to revisit the FL Max, good reminder!
Plus the MAX has a docking collar.
the odd landing style makes it a bad ship for new players just starting out imo.
Agreed
In my mind a $70 ship is not a starter, other than that silly classification it’s great!
