  • A pterygium is a growth of pink, fleshy tissue on the conjunctiva, the clear tissue that lines the eyelids and covers the white part of the eye (sclera). It's a non-cancerous, benign growth, usually appearing on the side of the eye closest to the nose, though it can develop on either side.
Pterygiums are often caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, such as sunlight, and chronic eye irritation from dry, dusty, or windy environments. Symptoms may include redness, irritation, itching, and a feeling that there's a foreign body in the eye.
It's essential to protect your eyes from excessive sun exposure by wearing sunglasses that block UV rays and using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops if you live in a dry climate or work in conditions that may irritate your eyes. Regular eye check-ups can also help in the early detection and management of any eye conditions, including pterygiums.
Your eye doctor can best advise you on the appropriate treatment based on your specific situation. Regular eye check-ups and protecting your eyes from excessive UV exposure are essential to prevent or manage pterygiums.
