Thank you for this video , I just developed a great deal of respect for the Dominican Republic as far as identity goes. What a wonderful culture that self identifies.
If race is a social construction, why do some people get upset when Dominicans use a different social construction of race than the one they use? Historically, Dominicans exist several racial groups such as blacks, mulattoes, biracials, whites. Some who believe they know the history of the Dominicans accuse him of denying the African heritage, but also the blackness that exists in a large majority of the population which is considered mulatto with different skin tones and hair textures. Do Dominicans have the right to identify themselves based on their social construction of race? My answer is yes.
Totally that’s what I just said why do people care what we think whether we want to say we are not black we are mulatto we are white why evolving thing so much
Dominican is a nationality, not a race. Genetically speaking African genes dominate. Culturally they are Latino as Dominicans, but they would be ignorant to say they are not black. Anything can be viewed as a social construct, but your genes are not.
@@gpayne3728 Genetically speaking the average Dominican is more European. It's you who would be ignorant to call them black instead of Mulatto. Especially sense the United States itself has a long Mulatto history. Mulatto has been documented since the early 1600s in English and French colonies within current day United States. It wasn't until the 1924 racial integrity act aka one drop (which only lasted a measly 43 years) that changed this for a short period. This is nicely researched and explained well . I'm biracial and I always found it odd that people were offended with Dominicans saying they were Dominican . To my knowledge, the DR is a largely mestizo and mulatto society. Only a smaller amount of the population is solely of African heritage. Also, from what I see in Caribbean as well as South American societies, nationality is the distinguishing factor. Thus citing that one is Dominican or Cuban etc. Finally you have to look at culture. DR is a strongly Spanish influenced society which is of course different from its neighbor Haiti which was culturally influenced by the French .
The big issue only comes in because in America what would be our mulatto and mestizo is just blk and Hispanic being said as a race. Ppl don’t like to admit but many blk Americans have at least 1 very mixed grandparent and dang near all have someone white/1 drop rule(13%+)/ was marked as mulatto before it was removed here, after slavery(during the gRAPE which is the only part that’s brought up). Let me tell you something about Dominican society. The first colony of the Spanish Empire in the 15th century was what is today the Dominican Republic and the first time that Spain brought slaves was in 1503 (the black part of Dominican society does not come from Haiti) when Spain discovered the immensity of the American continent it practically abandoned the island of Hispaniola to its fate, leaving the Creoles, mulattoes and slaves on the island. There was a lot of poverty and the only way to get out of it was through trade between the different peoples of the island. Later there was a great deal of miscegenation among all of them. It is important to emphasize this because in the Spanish colony the one drop rule did not exist and interracial marriage was allowed. Dominicans have literally been marrying different ethnicities and races for more than 400 years, in the 20th century this was prohibited in the USA, in 1606 the devastations of Osorio happened and there was a demonstration against this measure and it was practically the first recorded protest by the creoles of the island who had already been mixing what was created for more than a century was the sentiment of protecting the land where you were born, in 1621 it was the first time that the Spanish crown used the term Dominican, practically referring to the Creole people of the island of Hispaniola, which was made up of the descendants of the Spaniards who stayed on the island, the few Tainos who survived and the blacks. The problem with African Americans is that they want to extrapolate the reality experienced in the English colonies, such as the One Drop Rule and the prohibition of marriage between races, to the entire world. They think that this was the reality everywhere. There was certainly slavery in Spain, but it was very different from the English and French colonies. In short, Dominican society is united by the culture and the land that saw it born, and that is what has created its identity as a society.
The funny thing is that the South African singer Tyla said that she self identified as mixed and not black. Guess what? The black American community lost their mind and went crazy calling her a traitor blah blah blah, meanwhile the south African community was fine with that and actually supported her claim. I believe that the problem is the black American community. Race is not of Dominican concern, that's not a topic to debate, but for african americans that's everything.

African American don't deny we are mixed too🤨 We know we are part European and Indian to a lesser extent👌 We just love our Blackness more since we are predominantly OF💯💯💯
As a Canadian I've observed that the Dominican Republic mixes Nationality with Ethnicity/phenotype. I think that is a reminant of the color class system leftover from thier colonial history. In Canada you would be hard pressed to find someone that identify's as black canadian or chinese canadian. You're just Canadian.
Respect has to go both ways. Dominicans have come to America to a culture which be respected as well. You have the right to identify how you want but what is Dominican? That’s a culture and an ethnicity. Not a race. If you gone to answer the race answer when someone ask you that in particular, Dominican is not a race. It black, white and/ or native. This video is not being fair to the true narrative.
This is a very loaded subject. Most Dominicans have more European DNA than African, yet we don't deny our African heritage. We are not "black" because we don't subscribe to the racial ideology of the US, and we also aren't "white" because that label didn't even exist when the Dominican Republic was settled . From the onset there was heavy mixing of the different populations on the island (Latins, natives, africans). We werent "colonized" , we were the colonizers. The reason you want to categorize us that way is because of your "one drop rule" which is non existent in Latin America. Those ideas of race were promoted by Northern european/German colonies of the north. Latin people (Italians, Spanish, portuguese) have always had color if you study the history of the Mediterranean. I support the empowerment of the African diaspora, I'm a big fan of Cheikh Anta Diop. I know we don't seem to fit neatly into your paradigm but ya'll need to ease up off us because that shit is getting corny already. God bless the Human race.
Why are some people so obsessed with the color of skin??? i notice specially extremely leftist here in the USA what about "ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS" everyone start caring more for one another I know is a waste of time. But color of skin or race now that is a waste of time and this is coming from a Dominican.
So Dominicans and Haitian's didn't come of the same boat on the same island...yes yall Black all of us got mixed blood thanks to slavery even in America
People talk so much on race. More is spoken about a simple thing and make a mountain out of an ant hill. Race. Only one exists, Human. That's it. Treat people as you would treat yourself. Love who appeals to you. If you seen me you could not define my ethnicity. Love one another.
Oh well, I guess Trujillo did his job. Oh and so you know 43% is more than 36%. Mixed and whites passing seems to be the ideal. That's why Sosa gown pink.

Good for you.i couldn't care any less what they identity as. I'm Nigerian, Hatian Creole and West Indian. 3 kinds of Black. I'm black enough for the ones who refuse. 😊😂😂😂😂
One drop rule was 1800s rules for human property. Not fee folks
I am not black, I am dominivan" 😮😮😮
Dominicans are where you from black is what yall are take that DNA test then YES yall are black...period 🙄🤔😂🤣
I dont think we as AAs, Americans, should care
Why are some people so obsessed with the color of skin??? i notice specially extremely leftist here in the USA what about "ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS" everyone start caring more for one another I know is a waste of time. But color of skin or race now that is a waste of time and this is coming from a Dominican.
Dominican love DominicanS

That DNA test says all you are ...Dominicans is where you from Black is who you are period it ain't up for discussion 🙄🤔😂🤣
@@djgaffney1black is who they are?
So Dominicans and Haitian's didn't come of the same boat on the same island...yes yall Black all of us got mixed blood thanks to slavery even in America
@@djgaffney1 Haitians look mostly African, dominicans are more mixed then Haitians
1st people on earth are black deny all you want cousin😂🤣...everybody African
Dominicans are triracial, and we are proud of it. Stop applying your political dialectics to ensue division.
People talk so much on race. More is spoken about a simple thing and make a mountain out of an ant hill. Race. Only one exists, Human. That's it. Treat people as you would treat yourself. Love who appeals to you. If you seen me you could not define my ethnicity. Love one another.
These people are deluded
Thank God!!!!!!!
Imagine that they are black....what a draw back for us blackz....
...
historically any where the europeans go - its confusion.
We get it, y'all have a "strong" sense of Dominicaness. Okay. ...
What a shame if it’s even true if their saying this.
Black and white are divisive words
Oh well, I guess Trujillo did his job. Oh and so you know 43% is more than 36%. Mixed and whites passing seems to be the ideal. That's why Sosa gown pink.
43% is still less than 50%.
Failed as for they are mostly triracial people that can pass of any race
