@@jeremyleonjonas7657 I can see a level Barbarian and sticking Monk, but DEFINITELY taking Crusher. Though Monk 7, Barb 1, Fighter 12 would be a fun (and fitting) build. A couple Action Surges on a Monk gets spicy quickly. Having played a Rogue 1 (for backstory reasons), Dragon Monk 7, Battle Master Fighter 6 with Crusher and Gunner feats, I can tell you that combo is a hell of a lot of fun.
I personally feel like vi’s a battle master fighter with the unarmed fighting fighting style (that’s a mouthful) multiclassed with the berserker barbarian. Still an amazing build, though.
Seems possible, but that build would suck. I played unarmed battlemaster for a few months and when dnd2024 released my dm allowed me to reroll character into 2024 monk and only then I started enjoying the game
I love how well Astral Self works with the new Monk. New monk is already cool, but they tie in super well with some old things. And hey, now the Sun Soul can probably slap people's energy attacks away like a proper Super Saiyan too thanks to Deflect Energy.
Could be fun to see you try turning Usato from The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic into a D&D character; it could also be fun to see try to translate the main cast of Outlaw Star into D&D characters.
I love the build, but not for Vi. Both in the show and the game, she is not monk coded. Vi isn't good at evading attacks or damage. She also doesn't attack super fast. Vi is definitely a Strength build.
Not familiar with the game but in the show Vi in my opinion is definitely monk coded. In the show she displays multiple fast attacks, good to great movement speed/jumping/leaping ability, and is able to dodge/deflect multiple attacks. I do think the show was somewhat inconsistent in displaying the level of her fighting ability but that could have been for a number of reasons, the most obvious one being plot I think. Take care.
Vi 100% attacks fast and evades attacks, are we watching the same show? Also 2024 monks can do amazing tanking too since they can generate temp hp and reflavor deflect attacks
My current character is an astral self echo knight multiclass (2014 rules) who is heavily themed around chains. I saw the title and thumbnail of this video and immediately knew it would be an astral self monk. Currently my build can get a max of 9 attacks in a turn but in 2024 rules it could get 10+
Whoo! So happy to see Vi in D&D. I would very much like to see: Gizmoduck Darkwing Duck I had seen some artwork for them, and I would love to see them in D&D.
So what you’re saying is that this build almost makes a Monk worth playing? At fifth level you get extra attack and stunning strikes which gives 2d4 extra damage in melee combat once per long rest. Or you can cast an upcast Smite, Spirit Guardians, Plant Growth, Revivify or Fireball if you chose a different class. Nice try but not convinced.
That's not how stunning strike works. Stunning strikes can be used every turn, and I don't know where you got that 2d4 once per long rest, there's nothing that does that.
Hyperbole to emphasise the point that a level 5 Monk, even this new and improved version, still lags behind most other classes in so many ways. Well aware that the detail of the Monk’s abilities in my comment are nonsense.
Have read it and have a soft spot for the Monk class which is why I’m salty that, while the new Monk has been buffed, it doesn’t feel like it was buffed enough to keep up with the casters. Even if Monk is now the strongest of the martial classes that’s still just being the prettiest camel.
I would build Vi more as a level 6 berserker barbarian, level 11 battlemaster fighter with 3 levels of thief rogue in there for flavour. The monk build is a cool take but, while Vi is nimble and dexterous, she relies much more on that brawler/boxer style of combat that better befits a strength build. Her gauntlets act more like an artificer infusion than anything else. Still a cool idea nonetheless!
@ The barbarian and fighter levels would push you more towards strength to get the most out of the unarmed fighting style, the rogue levels are more for flavour (as well as the extra 2d6 sneak attack damage guaranteed by reckless attack because I, as well as most GMs I’ve played, allow your unarmed strikes to count as finesse weapons)
That’s a crazy AC! Also, are we sure those Astral Self attacks stack like that? I guess it’s at such a high level that it wouldn’t be ridiculously game-breaking. ~_~
Astral Self needs a facelift. It’s so cool but doesn’t give you much. Spending 1 focus, giving up a turn of using Flurry of Blows, and only getting an extra 5ft of reach is awful. You already have high Dex so the other bonuses are pointless. The Visage is almost complete my useless. Summoning the Chest is expensive and underwhelming. The Level 17 feature is awesome but it’s expensive and most people don’t even reach that level.
I have always hated that DnD forces you to be a Monk and use Dexterity instead of Strength if you want to be a decent Unarmed Combatant. With this build Vi is technically weaker than the average adventurer with that 8 STR. That’s ridiculous but you had no choice. I also don’t understand why they’ve never introduce Fist Weapons unlike literally every other fantasy series. And my go do I hate whatever PoS decide that Monk’s Martial arts doesn’t work if you decide to wear Armor. That doesn’t make any sense.
Martial artists don't wear fantasy armor, it would slow down the movements you need to be an effective martial artist. Also you can just choose not to dump strength on this build and dump charisma anyways
@ Light Armor and most Medium Armor aren’t that much different from modern heavy duty military armor in terms of weight. Yet modern soldiers that don’t have magical fantasy powers can still throw punches and kicks full force. That’s a stupid argument
I would argue that Vi's gloves are merely an Enhanced Weapon she was given by an Artificer (Jayce).
Yeah, in that case I'd probably say Barbarian (level 2) and the rest fighter. With focus in the physical stats, obviously.
