- So there was a reason I got this 2012 BMW X5 diesel so cheap! It was hiding a $2000 problem!! The EGR cooler is shot, and this could cause a blown head gasket. Can we fix this for $250?

I’s critical that you follow the BMW torque procedure for the EGR cooler or it will crack fairly quickly. It’s a common issue on the forums!
The EGR cooler gets super hot and unless torqued to the correct specs you or the new owner will have issues down the line.
Google “M57 EGR cooler tightening procedure” to find the correct sequence and specs.
Hope this helps! Like this comment so Randy sees!
I do not think I have ever seen an older BMW with no codes at all.
Great Job.
@@Liferoad371 just put a battery in a 06 x5 with no check engine light at 220k miles honestly was surprised
I just moved to Germany for work and I am on the hunt for one of these! I currently drive a 2017 330i xdrive for myself and these BMW’s really are the ultimate driving machines!
You can use nail polish to stick the bolt until you need to turn it
Randy, the hardest working man on UA-cam - sure, I speak in superlatives sometimes and maybe I'm biased because I know he's a good fella who takes the time to answer my dumb email messages - whatever! Gotta give credit where it's due. You definitely give inspiration to us other often broke mechanics-by-necessity with your "what the hell, I'll try to fix it my damn self" attitude. All the best from Wes in Pittsburgh.
Thank you sir!
I bought a 1999 buick lesabre for $150 bucks. $35 part later been running ever since. Great car.
Hi Randy and Mike. It's great to see you Working on a Car. That BMW is very Clean. Someone has had 10yrs of Carefree driving and whoever buys it will get the same. There's no way you can lose money on this Car lol. 😊 I hope the Masserati is still running nice. Chat later 😅
10 more years of driving that BMW will cost you near 10000 dollars if that's carefree driving?
That X5 was very well maintained, new vac pump, looks like new boost pipe aswell. Randy got really lucky with this one!
There's alot to be said to be A YOU TUBE certified mechanic lol I've fixed several things on my 2012 silverado and my Wife's 2012 murano after watching a UA-cam video. You and Mike together are some of the best Videos you do! Keep them coming.
There is a recall for the EGR cooler. Also for the airbags
Thanks for the video. Very useful
sadly it's for 2013, 14, 15 and doesn't include the 2012. I have a 2012 with the EGR problem as well and got hopeful on the recall but quicly dissappointed. Did get the airbag done though.
@@sheldonrevis9268Get that stuff deleted man
Hey Randy it has been raining we wanna know where our summer is love your channel budd you and Mike make the bestTeam love it when you both work together so much fun
You guys make a good team!! Its good to see the BMW back in tip top shape and running well. Nice SUV!!
Id keep that old part and see if the spring could be replaced or even welded or jb welded
Those "flappy bits" as you called them are doors that open when moving to allow more air to flow through for additional cooling, and when the fan starts in stop and go city traffic, the vacuum holds those doors shut so all the air is pulled through the radiator.
For BMW, at least my F10 535i, there are vents to allow the engine to warm up quickly and then they open at a certain point. Just canceling out air flow. At warmer temperatures mine usually stay open from what I remember.
@jackhentges2179 yep most newer cars have those front shutters to make the engine warm up as fast as possible cus when the engine is at running temp is when it's most efficient so the manufacturer wants it to get there quick, then they open to maintain the temp.
So cracked my scull for a minute and wondered why aluminum bolts and answered my own question pretty quick.
To save on weight for one and also most of the parts are aluminum I think the block is the only thing that is steel so the chemical effect as well between steel and aluminum would be not good so that’s go to be why
My kind of mechanics! You guys are a hoot. Keep it up.
Also randy these are known to have the thermostats fail in the open position. Run your scanner and if the temp doesn’t go above 77c you’re going to have issues as it won’t go into regen. Operating temp should be around 87c. If it’s not you need to do a thermostat.
I think I would have removed the radiator and electric fan to access the EGR, but like you, I most likely would have tried your route first and then say I should have removed the radiator after I drop the bolts or something important
Btw, I would advise to check if the swirlflaps have been done, you don't want them failing and getting sucked into the engine
These ones are welded and don’t fail. Earlier bmw diesels did have issues though but this car is ok. However these get caked with carbon and the leak boost. If he was keeping the car I would say do the swirl flap delete but I mean it’s fine if he leaves it as is
@@drivenserbsure, if it's n57. M57 always needs doing
Guess this one is an N57 unit
@@Randomeris1 this is a M57 and no these don’t have the same Swirlflap getting sucked into the intake issues as the earlier m57’s. I know what you’re talking about but they were revised
@@drivenserbRandy's a 2012, I don't think they've been revised yet in this particular case. Still, I myself trust these type of statements as much as I trust transmission fluid that lasts forever.
@@Randomeris1 have you owned an X5D?
I had my F15 X5 EGR cooler replaced for free. Mine started smelling fumey, took it to the dealer and they have a recall. they did all associated parts in the fix
Good you took the fan off. Saved a lot of time. Smarter not harder. 😅
Excellent Video Coverage On The BMW Randy, You & Mike Motivate Me To Finish The Resto On My 2005 BMW 330ci, You Guys Are Great!! Be Well & Happy Fathers Day Gentlemen!!
It’ll be interesting what happens moving forward 👀. You do have a back for fixing cars for cheap! Keep it up Randy love the videos! But can you please start a 3rd channel with MWM? Yiu tei would do Q&A’s here and there so forth! It’d be so cool!!
Good fix... easy job when you know what you're needing to do... what is the scanner you use - looks like a good one...?
The electrical tape was a kinda good idea, Randy, but it will melt and maybe catch on fire?
Thats a strong possibility at the very least its going to smell bad melting.
That's what I was thinking also.
That’s what I was wondering! It’s going into an exhaust that’s PRETTTTTTY hot. I’m trying to remove the EGR currently (to replace thermostat) and it’s seized at those T45 bolts 🤦🏼♀️
In Germany you get the egr cooler for free new from the dealer no matter if you bought it from the dealer or craigslist because it can leak and burn your car. Labor gets payed from bmw too of course.
It’s for exhaust gas temperatures to let the egr system know how hot the egr is getting and to control the burn off
The cooling fan is very easy to take out. Screw at top and push clip left and right at bottom
E70 X5 35d in the USA had M57 and ZF 6 speed only.
Also make sure your coolant temperature is getting up to 87 C. If not, or not very close to that, replace the thermostat.
I like the BMW diesel Randy. You and Mike make an awesome team 😎😎👍👍
I am sure we in the uk 🇬🇧 had a recall on this issue Randy for egr cooler
Most jobs in my garage start with underestimating the scope of the work lol
It's almost ALWAYS more than anticipated with German cars. Never as easy as it appears on them.
this job is actually easy lol
Been loving the content Randy 🤘🏽😀🔥
So this is wear a machanic or dealership will get you by taking of the front bumper, radiator & fan to get to that part. Hints the bmw none magnetic screws. There's your labor. Good hard work Sir.& Mike
A shortcut is never a shortcut is one of the first things you learn working on cars 😂
Randy on BMW you all ways have to take off fan clock wise and shroud at the same time
Informative video, well done on the BMW 'X Wife' now move it down the road and go find another one... the next one you need to get should have a different problem to fix so you can build a Video library of BMW 'X Wife' repairs! Thanks guys!
That throw of the old one hurt me!
Surly they sell the spring and then, boom, relist for $150-200 to get something back for it
Hey Randy, that would be the Nox sensor, they are not cheap either. Since you are in OK I believe you could have done an EGR delete-but it don't mater its done back to "factory" Just had mine done in a 328D 2014-BMW warrantied it.
Yeah but he’s a car dealer so he can’t knowingly sell it without emissions equipment. They’d pull his dealers license and fine him heavy
Good to see you guys. Always funny together. Be safe and careful.🙂👍🙏
Electrical tape eh? Bet that is fun when it all melts and the bolts cannot be removed next time without removing half the engine bits and radiator. I would use a small thickness O Ring myself. There is a saying that BMW engines are very easy to work on......once you remove the engine from the vehicle that is! And for me, I would be putting the V-Band clamp on before I tightened the two bolts fully.
What kind of scanner is that ? Looks like it comes in handy with all the newer cars.
I learn something in every video of yours I watch. Thanks for doing these!!
What scanner are you using? Can you share the model and brand ?
What rayban sunglasses model are those. They look good!
What a nightmare those BMW's are to work on! Insane! Great job guys.
The xdrive30i are one of the best reliable and easy engines to work on, the worst are the X5m
As you can see at the 10:05 mark, this $800 part failed when a $2 spring broke, as it did on mine. Simply infuriating! I decided to stick I to BMW and brought a 4 inch long spring for $2, attached one end to the valve arm, tied a flexible wire to the other end of the spring, and tied the wire to the body. It's been working for several years now. Just need to make sure the spring allows the allows the valve arm to move freely under tension.
Randy is always ready for anything just like the range rover
Think I would have used PTFE tape less " fire" risk, but otherwise your still "fired" up still loving both of you
Do you have a link to the scanner that you are using?

Keep up the great work you guys. Nice job on getting it fix up. Sweet.
Why not delete the egr?
i have a 2011 with a miss when you sit in park with revs held at either 1000 or 1500 rpm. any higher revs and its smooth. stuck egr valve?
Happy Father’s Day
Call BMW service dept in your area and ask if there are any recalls on your VIN. You might get a new EGR
That right side worm gear clamp is offset, meaning it's probably a standard non-grooved hose style clamp, not the banjo clamp from the factory? It will not seal at all? Just trying to help, guys?
What is the brand name of your recent most scanner again?
Have a Great Father's Day Gents. Good video as usual.
Thanks! You too!
Awesome work as always!
Thanks Mike and Randy this video was really fun even though it reminded me how I lost an engine because of a magnet 🧲 that I didn't have while dropping a 🔩 in the spark plugs whole 😢😢😢😢😅😅😅😅😅😅
On my 2013 BMW X5 LCI 40d, the check engine light didn't go off after starting, so I took the car to the garage and they replaced the EGR valve, the light went off and fuel consumption increased by 2L/100km.
I took the car back to the garage and they replaced the EGR cooler this time and after driving 5km the check engine light came on for the while driving!
So looking forward to the 3rd service visit.
This fun has already cost me $796.21🤑
If every need reference on to diy a eleven years old BMW X5 diesel always go back to this video thanks video
That's a body off r & r like Ford does it , lmaoo, great job Randy and Mike , keep up the great content , will be waiting to watch the next one , peace
I would be concerned that the non-magnetic bolts were the aluminum torque-to-yield kind that are not to be re-used.
Feel free to be concerned. I'm not.
Which one is easier to work on the BMW or the Maserati?
MWM and AAR = MAGIC😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
BMW has a long warranty on the emissions symptom. They will replace the EGR cooler free with a modified one. It may be worth your while to call with your VIN to check if your vehicle is included.
Hey Randy I got a question to ask you why you don't try to get a good mechanic person
what is the made and model of the scanner?
I love it when you two are together lol
Im like you Randy when I work on my vehicles I never use gloves they just don't feel right, and just last month replaced my egr cooler on my truck $2600, I tried to take it out and clean it but it was plugged and to far gone
Genuinely enjoy your videos.. especially with Mike there! Lol
Hi Mike, what kind of scanner were you using to read fault codes?
Worth looking at fixing the spring if that is all that failed . Would make a video .
What did you thank about the storms last night?
Those bolts are stainless steel, because exhaust and that part breaks and occasionally needs to be replaced.
5:13 the ERG sits snug top right whereas 20:32 looks to not be seated correctly??
Anothercgreat collaboration video! I'm looking for a reliable SUV. Please let me know if/when you plan to sell it!
Hi Randy, I just saw today’s video with you and monkey wrench Mike working on the BMW BMW X5 you guys did a great job today you are you always do a great job on your videos. Tell Mike I said hi and I’ll talk to you guys later.
thanks for the info love your content.
Still digging that BMW diesel, interesting period of cars , IMHO. Not just some other straight 6 twin turbo or 4 cylinder tubro.
You make a great Team. 😊
These are great vehicles, but at this age just go ahead and remove the expensive and failure prone emissions components, then get a tune to match and you'll amazed at the improvement, especially long term.
Normal procedure is to pull the radiator / fan assembly to get better access to the EGR
No need to pull the rad. Plenty of room with the fan removed.
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds Sorry, I meant to say just the fan.
What kind of scanner are u using??

I saw on someone else's post that you put the scanner up there. If I use your link do you get credit for it? I know other UA-camrs tell you if you click on the link you guys get some sort of credit for people watching your videos and then buying it from the link.
Great content randy
Hello guys 🙆🖐. Appreciate another great vid Randy & 🐵 Mike of course 🎬🚘✨️👏👏👍. Onlything that's missing is 🎅. He must be home checking his list lol. Salute guys 🙂✌️.
I'm curious if anyone sells just the spring for that EGR cooler.
being on the exhaust, won't the electrical tape melt and start to smoke?
Happy father's day to you and Mike
I’ll buy that BMW. LOVE small diesel cars
Randy, I thought that if the Dealer was looking to get 15K for it, why couldn't you get 12-13K? Nice profit there. How much did you get for it? 💲💲
Another video! I love the videos with Monkey Wrench Mike!
Whoever is reading this, I hope this day will be a great day.
X5 is not a basic SUV, this may be a bit older model, so it can be not loaded, ,but even 2nd gen X5 is a 5 series for more money in the dealer and just a nice SUV that handles fine and has the trunk of a 5 series, just doesn't handle as good as a 5 series car, but those are fency, even the 2nd X5 is a /was a luxury German SUV. I also like the looks of this X5 and a great spec of the next one is my favorite! This pulls and is so economical on diesel, we drive them so much more in Europe, wonder why in the USA it's mostly GAS, or to use the correct word - petro:)
The Genscher Mercedes looks 👌
Wrenching with your dad Mike on Father's Day.....now that's some wholesome content right there ❤
Where are you guys? Can you help me fix it? I got same error code. I can’t get dmv sticker
Ebays guaranteed to work wont help when it doesnt work and you have to send it back for a refund and waste all that time waiting for a second part. Too bad a EGR delete isnt realistic for your situation. Thanks for the video.
Rarely (it's been 2 years) do I get a broken part.
