I’s critical that you follow the BMW torque procedure for the EGR cooler or it will crack fairly quickly. It’s a common issue on the forums! The EGR cooler gets super hot and unless torqued to the correct specs you or the new owner will have issues down the line. Google “M57 EGR cooler tightening procedure” to find the correct sequence and specs. Hope this helps! Like this comment so Randy sees!
I just moved to Germany for work and I am on the hunt for one of these! I currently drive a 2017 330i xdrive for myself and these BMW’s really are the ultimate driving machines!
That’s what I was wondering! It’s going into an exhaust that’s PRETTTTTTY hot. I’m trying to remove the EGR currently (to replace thermostat) and it’s seized at those T45 bolts 🤦🏼♀️
These ones are welded and don’t fail. Earlier bmw diesels did have issues though but this car is ok. However these get caked with carbon and the leak boost. If he was keeping the car I would say do the swirl flap delete but I mean it’s fine if he leaves it as is
@@Randomeris1 this is a M57 and no these don’t have the same Swirlflap getting sucked into the intake issues as the earlier m57’s. I know what you’re talking about but they were revised
@@drivenserbRandy's a 2012, I don't think they've been revised yet in this particular case. Still, I myself trust these type of statements as much as I trust transmission fluid that lasts forever.
There's alot to be said to be A YOU TUBE certified mechanic lol I've fixed several things on my 2012 silverado and my Wife's 2012 murano after watching a UA-cam video. You and Mike together are some of the best Videos you do! Keep them coming.
sadly it's for 2013, 14, 15 and doesn't include the 2012. I have a 2012 with the EGR problem as well and got hopeful on the recall but quicly dissappointed. Did get the airbag done though.
I think I would have removed the radiator and electric fan to access the EGR, but like you, I most likely would have tried your route first and then say I should have removed the radiator after I drop the bolts or something important
Those "flappy bits" as you called them are doors that open when moving to allow more air to flow through for additional cooling, and when the fan starts in stop and go city traffic, the vacuum holds those doors shut so all the air is pulled through the radiator.
For BMW, at least my F10 535i, there are vents to allow the engine to warm up quickly and then they open at a certain point. Just canceling out air flow. At warmer temperatures mine usually stay open from what I remember.
@jackhentges2179 yep most newer cars have those front shutters to make the engine warm up as fast as possible cus when the engine is at running temp is when it's most efficient so the manufacturer wants it to get there quick, then they open to maintain the temp.
Randy, the hardest working man on UA-cam - sure, I speak in superlatives sometimes and maybe I'm biased because I know he's a good fella who takes the time to answer my dumb email messages - whatever! Gotta give credit where it's due. You definitely give inspiration to us other often broke mechanics-by-necessity with your "what the hell, I'll try to fix it my damn self" attitude. All the best from Wes in Pittsburgh.
Also randy these are known to have the thermostats fail in the open position. Run your scanner and if the temp doesn’t go above 77c you’re going to have issues as it won’t go into regen. Operating temp should be around 87c. If it’s not you need to do a thermostat.
In Germany you get the egr cooler for free new from the dealer no matter if you bought it from the dealer or craigslist because it can leak and burn your car. Labor gets payed from bmw too of course.
So cracked my scull for a minute and wondered why aluminum bolts and answered my own question pretty quick. To save on weight for one and also most of the parts are aluminum I think the block is the only thing that is steel so the chemical effect as well between steel and aluminum would be not good so that’s go to be why
I had my F15 X5 EGR cooler replaced for free. Mine started smelling fumey, took it to the dealer and they have a recall. they did all associated parts in the fix
Hey Randy it has been raining we wanna know where our summer is love your channel budd you and Mike make the bestTeam love it when you both work together so much fun
E70 X5 35d in the USA had M57 and ZF 6 speed only. Also make sure your coolant temperature is getting up to 87 C. If not, or not very close to that, replace the thermostat.
Hi Randy and Mike. It's great to see you Working on a Car. That BMW is very Clean. Someone has had 10yrs of Carefree driving and whoever buys it will get the same. There's no way you can lose money on this Car lol. 😊 I hope the Masserati is still running nice. Chat later 😅
Electrical tape eh? Bet that is fun when it all melts and the bolts cannot be removed next time without removing half the engine bits and radiator. I would use a small thickness O Ring myself. There is a saying that BMW engines are very easy to work on......once you remove the engine from the vehicle that is! And for me, I would be putting the V-Band clamp on before I tightened the two bolts fully.
BMW has a long warranty on the emissions symptom. They will replace the EGR cooler free with a modified one. It may be worth your while to call with your VIN to check if your vehicle is included.
Hey Randy, that would be the Nox sensor, they are not cheap either. Since you are in OK I believe you could have done an EGR delete-but it don't mater its done back to "factory" Just had mine done in a 328D 2014-BMW warrantied it.

So this is wear a machanic or dealership will get you by taking of the front bumper, radiator & fan to get to that part. Hints the bmw none magnetic screws. There's your labor. Good hard work Sir.& Mike
On my 2013 BMW X5 LCI 40d, the check engine light didn't go off after starting, so I took the car to the garage and they replaced the EGR valve, the light went off and fuel consumption increased by 2L/100km. I took the car back to the garage and they replaced the EGR cooler this time and after driving 5km the check engine light came on for the while driving! So looking forward to the 3rd service visit. These are great vehicles, but at this age just go ahead and remove the expensive and failure prone emissions components, then get a tune to match and you'll amazed at the improvement, especially long term.
X5 is not a basic SUV, this may be a bit older model, so it can be not loaded, ,but even 2nd gen X5 is a 5 series for more money in the dealer and just a nice SUV that handles fine and has the trunk of a 5 series, just doesn't handle as good as a 5 series car, but those are fency, even the 2nd X5 is a /was a luxury German SUV. I also like the looks of this X5 and a great spec of the next one is my favorite! Im like you Randy when I work on my vehicles I never use gloves they just don't feel right, and just last month replaced my egr cooler on my truck $2600, I tried to take it out and clean it but it was plugged and to far gone
