  • In this video we breakdown three methods of fitting a Permatrim performance foil on to an outboard engine.
    - Bolting it on to your engine
    - Using 3m VHB tape
    - Using Sikaflex Marine 291
    We go into further detail with the Sikaflex Marine 291 method.

    Hi mate, it is important to state that Sika explicitly warns against using alcohol when using Sikaflex 291 as it neutralizes the chemical reaction of the adhesive. This happened in my case after following your instructions. The adhesive stays tacky for weeks afterwards and in places it is still tacky after 6 months. I have used SikaFlex 291 again for other installations on my boat without using alcohol and the cure was set within 24 hours. Just wash the area with Jiff. It works a treat. You can use Sika® Remover-208 or kerosene or turpentine to clean of uncured adhesive after installation.

    I think I’ll go with the nuts n bolts. The sealant method looks so sleek and clean but the ocean has a way of taxing me with items that aren’t tethered or bolted down lol. But man that looks drag free with the sikaflex. Nice work and thanks 👍

    Hey, thanks for the video. We bought a Discovery 330 back in 2020, you shipped it to Vancouver for us and we love it!
    So, I'm looking to get some more thrust from the 9.9 Yamaha. We've been towing the kids around on a tube but we could use something extra to launch the adults on the new hydrofoil surfboard. I was thinking of getting one of these foils for the motor and possibly a different prop. I'm just running the stock 9.9 Yamaha prop from 2020 as well. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks again!!

    Hi Rod & team, you mentioned the Sikaflex method would allow for possible removal in the future. What approach and solvent(s) would you recommend for removal if were necessary?

    • @TRUEKITINFLATABLES
      @TRUEKITINFLATABLES  2 роки тому

      Not easy to remove as the Sika has a very strong bond if done correctly. It will be best to cut the bond with a sharp blade where possible to reduce the contact area. Then peel the plate off the engine. Clean up by rolling the left bits of Sika off with your hands. Clean up with meths. As mentioned, not an easy removal. If you are thinking this would be a possibility, then bolt the Permatrim on for easy removal 👍

    I have a 15hp 2 stroke Yamaha motor already fitted with a Davis Instruments Doel-Fin anti-cavitation hydrofoil wing. Will that work with a Discovery 330? I want to use it in the Bahamas for diving and spearfishing and want a small inflatable boat that can plane even in rough water.

    • @TRUEKITINFLATABLES
      @TRUEKITINFLATABLES  2 роки тому

      The Doel Fin is a good product and should work well with your Yammy + Discovery combo

  • @demirsal2
    @demirsal2 11 місяців тому

    Hello! Is there a reason you bolted it *under* the cavitation plate? Permatrim installation instructions show it as on *top*. Thank you!

    • @TRUEKITINFLATABLES
      @TRUEKITINFLATABLES  11 місяців тому +1

      The Permatrim will not always fit below the cavitation plate, it depends on the engine. But if it does it is a great place to put it and it increases the water pressure and effectiveness of the Permatrim

    • @demirsal2
      @demirsal2 11 місяців тому

      @@TRUEKITINFLATABLES I thought about that too plus the fact that there would be less bend / flexing since more surface area from the bottom of the cavitation plate supporting. Well, thanks again for the different perspective, I’m going to see if it fits below my 20hp Suzuki and install that way.
      PS.. this is going on a brand new Discovery 4m all the way in Puerto Rico 😃

    Hi, is the Sikaflex install method recommended by Permatrim, just how secure is it? Not sure i want to drill holes in my new outboard but would be concerned that it could come away if just sticking it on with adhesive?

    • @TRUEKITINFLATABLES
      @TRUEKITINFLATABLES  2 роки тому

      Permatrim supplies and recommends bolting the plate onto the engine. This is the method that is foolproof and won't come off. We have used the Sikaflex method successfully for years and prepare it properly as shown in the video. Preparation is always important with any chemical bond. Only use this method if you are up to doing it properly

    I notice you say to use Sikaflex 291, but are actually using the moisture cured 291i. Could you please clarify which one to use, or are they interchangeable?

      @@TRUEKITINFLATABLES We just received our Discovery this week, delivered to Texas. We are excited about getting it set up with all the accessories such as the 2nd aluminium seat, bimini, and the permatrim.
      I think we are going to go with the Sikaflex permatrim installation, which we plan to install after the engine’s break-in period has been completed. However, I noticed there are two formulations of Sikaflex Marine 291, one with Long Open Time (Sikaflex Marine 291 LOT), and a “plain” version (Sikaflex Marine 291).
      Which do you recommend?
