  • The GL.iNet GL-MT300N-V2 Mini Travel Router packs one serious punch for its price! I've been away twice over the past two weeks and have taken this router with me, setting up a private network in my Hotel Room.
    There's nothing like coming back to your hotel room after a long day exploring, and kicking back with Netflix or Disney+ streamed to your own Chromecast over a Personal Private Network.

    Did you know that if you change your custom dns settings to adguard dns on your router, you get an additional feature not offered by google dns and cisco open dns which is ad blocking.

    • @camshand
      @camshand  4 роки тому

      Yes that's also a great tip. I didn't want to get too much into what you can and can't do to keep it simple. with openDNS you can create and account and actually blacklist sites and add filters at dns level for your network (easy parental controls), but not as easy as a ad blocker focused one.
      Given the Mini router is running OpenWrt you can probably install an ad blocker plugin as well, however you wouldn't get the added speed Benifits of having ads blocked at the dns stage/level.
      I just know openDNS is good for Aussies as it routes preferably to Australian servers if one exists.

    Great video man!! Only question to didn't show how to connect a USB tethering via phone service which is what I'm instrested in doing! Is that possible to do with this device! Also are you saying this device can serve as a Chromecast as well? Thank again

    • @camshand
      @camshand  4 роки тому +3

      Hey sorry for the late response, yes you can tether from a mobile phone to this device, and then out to any other connected devices. Also it isn't a chromecast itself as has no HDMI out, what I did in the video was connect a chromecast to the MANGO v2 and then my phone to the MANGO v2, and the signal passed through it to the TV. This is because a hotel Wi-Fi wouldn't be the best access point to set a chromecast open on.

  • @robertmoorej
    @robertmoorej 3 роки тому +11

    If you set the dns, there are still alot of hotel and public wifi's that use dns redirect for the captive portal.
    If you find that you cannot reach the captive portal authenticate, you may have to set it back to auto.
    Unless you know that ip and when your device Mac address (travel router) expires on that network you can usually type the IP of the gateway in manually to reach the portal.
    If I were to insist on using a specific dns such as Google, I might bookmark the captive portal url ,auto dns ip, or gateway ip(usually the gateway will get you to the captive portal..not always) before setting static dns. I guess this depends on your personal level of nerd dedication to the situation.
    A little tedious but......

    • @camshand
      @camshand  3 роки тому

      Great point, the captive portal guide I linked in the description does show users to toggle it over to allow hijacking of DNS server, they're fiddly but I guess they don't want us using our own routers when in the Hotel haha.
      Thanks for the comment, hopefully someone sees it and can save themselves from a stressful situation.

    I find this video a massive over-simplification of how this product behaves. Tried two of these, and must say that while the wifi it generates is good, and the admin UI is user friendly, the box connection to home wifi and even cable connection is very fragile to say the least, with many time outs for wifi connection, or not even recognizing that a network cable was connected to it...

    While this might stop people from connecting to your ChromeCast, it wouldn't work with a lot of Smart TVs. They use Wifi-Direct, meaning they don't even have to be connected to yours (or anyones) network to cast to them, your phone just directly connects to the TV and casts. If a neighbor has a smart TV you can probably see it on your cast list and cast directly to it. It's stupidly insecure.

    • @camshand
      @camshand  4 роки тому

      Not sure about speed but with the Killswitch at a router level it'd be more trustworthy, especially since it's running on Linux you then don't have to make sure the android app didn't stuff up or windows had a driver issue for a moment whilst running an update on the background that took out the VPN.
      Also can help push a Chromecast through a VPN as well as it just gets the stream URL from the cast device then routes directly through your router

    hey, ive fooled with those DNS settings and still get no captive portal screens, also my phone and laptop both get disconnected from the Mango while it is attempting to connect to hotel wifi, and constantly disconnects/reconnects and I get nowhere....any help would be great. Have had this issue at two different hotels and 0 luck

    • @camshand
      @camshand  3 роки тому

      Hey Jay,
      That sucks you had troubles on your trip!
      So you tried the DNS setting on the captive portals guide? docs.gl-inet.com/en/3/troubleshooting/captive_portal/
      Also yeah your devices get kicked off whenever you change a major setting as the router reboots and comes back up as a hotel wifi repeater (if that's what you set).
      I think there's more captive portals add-ons people have on GitHub, I can try link a few. Probably dependant on what method the hotel had setup, kinda hard to test that feature unless you're at a hotel which well is useless if it doesn't work...

    How can I set up a wireguard client in my Gl i net ?

  • @Ibraheem.
    @Ibraheem. 4 роки тому

    I have a deep detailed question that I would highly appreciate if you answered it. So I'm in college now so it doesn't matter because the college share their Password with students, but none the less my question is: In highschool the school computers would have a Ethernet Wire for internet going into them if I had the yellow box then, if I was to plug that ethernet wire into that yellow box would I then be able to actually get the wifi on my phone via the yellow box via the Highschools Ethernet wire?
    Again I'd be grateful if this is answered.
    Take care and stay safe. 💙

    Liking the review! It looks like it can act as a repeater for my cell phone hot spot. • @camshand
      @camshand  3 роки тому +1

      Hmmmm good question, I can't see why it wouldnt work. When using the repeater mode the LAN port should just provide access to the network which is being repeated. I haven't tested that on the 300n specifically but have done so on my other review about the other model the slate. Does sound like it could work with the Sonos speaker though

    • @ahowl7mx
      @ahowl7mx 3 роки тому

      @@camshand I'll order one. There are a million people out here on the internet who can't use a Sonos speaker because it requires a LAN connection. If my cell phone hotspot can transform into a LAN for a Sonos speaker, you could get half a million viewers right there! :).

      A travel router segments your devices from the existing Wi-Fi network. Adds a firewall and can add a VPN, which can have added protection from whoever is providing the Wi-Fi network.
      Also can be easier if you are travelling with Family and the hotel provides 1 device connected for free, the router can be the "1 device" and middle man the connection to everyone elses.

      You need to turn this device on (Mango V2), then connect to it's wifi with a device (laptop or phone), go to the admin portal via the IP address on the bottom. Then configure it for the use you desire, if that's to repeat the hotel Wi-Fi then do that, or to repeat a LAN connection in a room you can choose that.
      It won't just work out of the box until you log in and tell it what mode to be in and what the details of the network you want to bridge/repeat are :)
