@@Lynch_Odhran I have a paid VPN. Would a free VPN work, I'm not sure. After the last new update on the router I'm now having problems with connecting my VPN. But when you do hook up to WIFI's it is a secure connecting still.
Excellent review! I plan on using this on an upcoming cruise to rebroadcast the ship's wifi to multiple devices without having to buy a plan for each device.
I actually have two of these as i have two ISP connections running two ASUS routers. One isp handles all of my wired connections and the other isp connection handles all of my wifi connections. Used these Glinet routers in repeater mode and repeated each isp connection to the ASUS routers running dual wan failover. That way if the primary connection of the router handling the wired clients goes down it automatically kicks over to the router handling the wireless clients and vice versa. That way unless both isp carriers go down during the sane time frame (highly unlikely) each router always has a back up connection until the primary connection is restored. Would be nice if the isp connections were closer together to directly connect to both routers but this was a great backup solution using the inet routers. The failover speeds are around 300 mbps for both isp connections so these Inet routers are very fast.
I got the router using it as a repeater, installed Nord VPN on it, and the router is connecting fine to my cell phone and personal laptop. I attempted to connect to my work laptop (which has another VPN on it set up by the employer) it kept saying "Can't connect to this network." I tried resetting the router, but nothing happened. What could be the problem? and how to resolve it? Thanks in advance!

Hey Jabber. I am wanting to travel with my work laptop, and be able to use my home's IP address while I am away so it looks like I am back at my house in the states. I have been advised to purchase 2 gl.iNet beryl servers and set one of them at my house as an openVpn/ Wireguard server, and take the other one with me as a client vpn. I am going to set up port forwarding on my main home router for the server side, but I am confused on how to set up the travel router that I take with me as the client. I will need to configure the second router as a client on the wire guard server, correct? Also, will I need to plug the travel router into my airbnb's main router for it to work? Or would I be able to get the travel router to work by just plugging it into an outlet or my computer and connecting it to the wifi? Thanks! Let me know if you need more information.
So I just bought one for a cruise. I am allowed 300 minutes of wifi in our package (expandable). When do those minutes start being used? As soon as you plug in the powered up router (and if you forget to detach while your gone, so too are your minutes?), or only when data is flowing from a device such as a laptop? Thanks, J-

Hello from Canada! I actually bought thia router last month and I've tested it out as a repeater at home. The results are very good! It's definitely an excellent companion if I were to go to stay at a hotel and need a secure connection Sadly, some hotels are no longer offering a hard-wired connection inside their rooms thesedays (as they only offer Wi-Fi-only). It's possible to connect the Slate AX to hotel wifi that requires some sort of login which is also known as a Captive Portal. GL-iNet has documentation in the docs area of their web site for the Slate AX that explains how to set it up to work when you are at a hotel, etc. where a captive portal is in use. So it doesn't require a hard-wired connection. It can connect to the hotel wifi by following the docs on how to get it to work with a captive portal login. There are a couple different options that can be used to get it to work in this situation. If you search Google for "GL-iNet Slate AX captive portal" you'll find the docs that provide the directions.

Is this as fast as the flint for home use? I'm debating between this and the flint ,mainly for home use. If this is just as fast, it might be worth the extra $30 for the occasional travel or coffee shop.
This is a travel router and not as powerful as the Flint which is designed for home use. If you have only a few devices and dont need the range of a powerful home router, this will be fine...like for a dorm room or studio apt

This is a fairly-well-known artifact of having the "DNS Rebinding Attack Protection" setting turned ON. [The setting is under "More Settings" -> "Custom DNS Server" -> ] If you don't see the hotel's 'Captive Portal' sign-in screen, you must DISABLE that setting (temporarily), and refresh your WiFi connection, so that you can complete the sign-in procedure. (Then, I recommend that you RE-enable that setting!) Bottom Line: That rebinding protection prevents the hotel's DNS server from re-directing your web request to the hotel's Captive Portal page. Give it a try.
You said, "As someone who definitely doesn't want to pay for anything when he goes to a hotel." Does the router somehow help you to avoid paying for certain hotel wifi or something?
I have to make a correction here. This router does not allow you to hide your location from your employer. You can hide your IP to external sites but if you are using a computer provided and administrated by your employer they will at the minimum have logging from your computer but very likely collect more information than that and your computer will accurately show your location because your computer knows what your location is in still because it gets that from your ISP. You will have to mask that also on your computer.
@@Chacha2ouf That is going to depend a lot on what operating system you are running and what software is installed on the computer. One dead giveaway would be that your time zone will be off and I was actually questioned about this in the past as microsoft teams was telling my team I was was in a different time zone. I had an ExpressVPN OpenVPN profile installed on my travel router pointing a city in my time zone before I left but my computer still detected that I was in a different time zone. IP packets leaving my router also contained my IP address from my ISP which is necessary for the packet to know how to get back to my computer so that will give you away. I am still not sure how my laptop knew where I was, maybe it collected data from other wifi and bluetooth enabled devices.
@@Chacha2ouf I just looked into it did a test and figured it out. I'm sure this applies for windows computers too but I found out that my MacBook is always scanning other devices around the area and collecting data from them that determines the procise location. By turning off my WiFi and Bluetooth and connecting my router to the VPN and to the MacBook over Ethernet and a dongle my computer stopped finding my procise location and showed instead a broad location where the ip address of the VPN belongs to.

I feel like you'd need to do a little packet sniffing to make the claim that it is a secure device, although privacy and security are two different things and this is likely more secure than using some random Wi-Fi from the coffee shop.
What if my job forces me to use their vpn after connecting to the Wi-Fi, would this still work for them to not see where I’m working from??
If set-up probably it'll still work
Following up on this. Did it work?
How do you access Hotel WiFi if Captive login is required
What was your Speedtest result on wireguard ? I think I missed it 😂😅
Watch again...it's there
I watched the video twice and still do not see wireguard results. did it get lost in editing? I saw you first did your home speed, then you said you would do wireguard and openvpn but after that you did slate ax in repeater mode then you did openvpn. @@TheJabberTech

I am not sure if you mean the speed test with 240 magabit. The wording is confusing. you were testing your home internet speed then you said you would do wireguard first then openvpn then you said we take"

Can you connect this to your pc and then via phone turn on and share internet from phone, and then connect with this router you will be able to enter and setup all these cool features? Or you need to connect to the wifi directly?
Tethering your smartphone's data to your router, yes it works with Slate AX~
Does anyone know if using this VPN router will impact my ability to log into my work Windows Virtual Desktop?
Did u find an answer? I’ve been hesitant because I’ve seen mixed reviews on this
What if youe job requires you to be connected to an ethernet cable, doea it still shows the IP address of your other place?
Yes
I enjoyed yourvideo. Thanks for sharing!
I would like to know if it's possible to use this device in such a way that the PC connected to it reads the wifi signal as being in a city or country different from where it actually is.
Yes when you use a vpn
@TheJabberTech thank you!
Hello, so this is an upgrade to their travel router. Since I travel quite a lot out of US will it work? or do I need to get Breyl. Thanks
check out Beryl ua-cam.com/video/TyLXqwn2e5o/v-deo.html
Let's say i get one that stays in the US and one overseas and i get it to work perfectly, can i buy another travel router for a friend overseas and we can both connect to the one in the US at the same time?
Just have your friend connect to yours. You don’t need two. Multiple devices can connect to one.
Can this device be connected straight to a public proxy server?
Stepped to linking router to hotel Wi-Fi. Router shows the linked connection. When I connect my phone to the router I get a no internet service error? Ideas?
Also, was attempting to connect a WYZE camera and the interface for linking says cannot find the internet connection name. (I placed the GL name and password correctly).
Thank you.
Vpn kill switch might be on
Can I club two different internet inputs to One connection for better speed? Say can I club guest wifi and cellular modem to make it one strong connection?
With the newest firmware you CAN combine sources
@@TheJabberTech thank you
Hi! I want to play online with my friend in Puerto Rico, but her modem/router shows a NAT type of D and mine is B. Will using this VPN help improve the connection?
Probably not
@TheJabberTech Thank you!
Awesome video. What is the best vpn service or what vpn features should I use, so it can’t be detected that I am using a vpn. Detected by security softwares such as crowdstrike falcon or by the naked eye by looking at the IP address ( from the vpn ). Thanks.
Appreciate it! Mentioned in the video
is there a DNS leak with this VPN setup? had issues with that and openWRT previously
Shouldn’t be. If so, enable the kill switch
Do you need to pay for wireguard vpn service or just easy & simple setup straight from the box?
Would this work with Global Protect VPN
What dat
Im going to the Dominican Republic how do I set up a network showing I’m in New York I have now clue how this works
Pretty simple. get a vpn. I have some discounts in my description
Also I made a setup guide ua-cam.com/video/ggxqE4NELjA/v-deo.html
@ great thanks
Can you bypass capture on public WiFi
You can’t bypass but you can enter credentials
you can only go to the captive portal once and then have wifi for all your devices and your friend's devices
Will this offer more security than connecting to public unsecured wifi like airlines and hotels and using a VPN software like Norton turned on on your devices?
in theory, yes
I can use this on my mobile phone yes? Via tethering? Or any other way like inserting my sim? Thanks
I have a question ? I stay at a hotel and sometimes the signal gets weak. Does this device help with a weak signal? Like can it get the weak signal and improve the signal to my laptop ?
On Amazon it says this Slate AX is a extender/repeater
Is the new Beryl AX better than this Slate AX ? I seen some differences in specs. I'm just looking to get what is best. Thank You
yes it's also an extender
Hi, i use ExpressVPN on my MAC, but interested in this product GL-iNet Slate AX. Can I configure this to my ExpressVPN as a Client.. because I am already subscriber and need access to UK and NZ
why would it not? Check the video where I show the client section and see if that's what you need
Simultaneous connections aren't allowed on work laptop is the message I see
Can I connect to my company's VPN while being on the inbuilt VPN?
Only one client can be connected at once
@@TheJabberTech Do you know any way to mask your IP and still connect to a VPN?
use the app from VPN company
Hey I have a question so is there anyway I can host my own hotspot for it. Im trying to make it entirely portable where I can move with it and it only has to be plugged into a portable battery.
Like I dont want an extender if you get what I'm saying?
As long as your phone has a good connection and transfer rate that could be your source of internet. Your phone already has better cellular band support than the best celular routers.
is it possible to connect to a wifi with a captive portal? eg. open hotel wifi but you need to login via web portal
Yes
do you have to pay for anything if you ONLY want your location different and dont care about the vpn stuff?
You have to pay lol.
@@TheJabberTech thanks! wasn't sure how the vpn stuff works. so to change location you need to be on vpn?

My employer lets me work from anywhere but says my ip will be blocked since it's outside Canada. For someone who works in a call center, what do you recommend?
Check this out

My unit was working just fine and all of a suddent it lost the VPN Client access. I've tried everything. reset, everything and it just doesn't work anymore after only 3 weeks :(
Good thing there's warranty
Hi
I have some difficulties with configuring this router, can you please provide your support. Can we connect and talk about it
I suggest contacting glinet or your vpn service. Good luck 👍
What's the easiest vpn provider to set up wireguard with directly in the gui?
Not in the GUI but I have been using Torguard Wireguard for years and never disappoints

would love to see you connect while being at an actual hotel. for the life of me it works flawlessy at home and on friends networks but when i go to a hotel it does not pop up with the password prompt that shows n your video.. im using the AC1200 which was promoted as.being able to use on the road.. great stuff thanks
Would love to go on vacation again 😂😆😂
Turn off location on your PC. Done! 😀
Yeah the software from the company can listen mic screen cam close wifi Bluetooth to determine location
So, what do you advise then?
Dude I need help. I can’t access GL AX admin panel on my windows laptop. There’s internet access so it works just can’t access the admin panel. I can access the admin on my phone and on my other computer. Any idea how I can fix this?
connect an ethernet cable. that usually fixes this issue..had it once or twice myself
6:09 - What was that?😂
Thanks for the review. May I ask what is the power input requirement to run this new Slate AX?
Runs off a power bank..so not much
8.9 watts I believe
If I connect a GL.Inet router (Opal) to the modem of my Internet Service Provider (ISP) in the United States and I have another GL.Inet router (AX Slate) in the Dominican Republic, could I establish a connection between both GL.Inet routers and connect to my ISP network in the United States without using a VPN connection ???
One as a server and one as a client would do the trick...using a static IP address would be best but it'll work with dynamic IPs as well
@@TheJabberTech hey by any chance do you work for hire , I have the exact scenario, my company has a private VPN I have to log in through by phone and with express vpn it logs me out, how can I do this

Does this unit have vpn policies to choose how you route client devices? I didn’t see it in the options menu.
Don't remember. Watch the video
What is the rush for?
You should show step by step how to open the portal, how to configure and how to use. You put too much effort but lack of details and fast speed didn’t help
This isn’t a step by step video. I show how to get started and some of the easy configuration steps don’t need to be explained.
@@TheJabberTechI agree with you. If you are a person that is buying one of these routers, you have to be somewhat tech savvy like knowing how to hit a power button and read a screen 😂

Thank you very much! I'm still having issues. I've connected my router to ethernet with my home wifi unit. When I try to use the wireless "internet option" within the online admin panel it won't connect even though I know the password is correct. I guess I can't have the option to use both unless I probably disconnect the ethernet cable? I don't know what to do :( EDIT: I got it working....it was my password 😇

I feel like you'd need to do a little packet sniffing to make the claim that it is a secure device, although privacy and security are two different things and this is likely more secure than using some random Wi-Fi from the coffee shop. It is using open WRT, but with proprietary non open source software.
