It would be cool to have a video on setting this up as the ultimate travel router. I know something like installing iodine might be cool because it could use a DNS trick to get around most captive portals. Or I bet someone out there has made something that helps auto login. I use WiFi Web Login on Android for that and it's amazing. I bet there is some cool other stuff you could put on there.

hi Matt - great video. I used to travel alot years ago and used a travel router back in the day when hotels had LAN cables in the room to connect to, and that was easy then to connect my devices (wirelessly) to the travel router for privacy and safe browsing. Now I'm getting ready to travel alot again, and now most hotel rooms don't have the LAN cable, but as we all know we connect via hotel's wifi through their web portal by entering your last name and room # as you touched on in this video. However, I'm in still in the dark how these travel routers let you enter your name and room number on the hotel's splash page. Where does that happen? What UI let's you do that? I didn't quite get how you mentioned connecting your phone to the hotel and letting the router mimic that phone's MAC address. Can you explain how that's done again please?

@ leightos1 Hello. As from my personal experience using an AR300M (more than 2 years traveling with it), the UI is the same as the AR750S and the process is as follows: Once you power up your router, enter the UI (in my case is 192.168.8.1) and, under the wifi tab, connect to your desired network. Then, once you try to open any page using your computer/phone (already connected to the AR750S network) the captive portal splash page will show up asking for your credentials. At this moment, after you enter your credentials, the hotel network will register the MAC address of the AR750S. I hope this helps. Cheers!

    • @kito1san

the ar750s doesn't have much of a captive portal issue. It's automatic. All you have to do is select the repeater and then select the wifi you want to connect to. Once you done that, using the same device you use for the configuration of the router and open up a webpage. It will go straight to the captive portal of the internet provider if there is one. Login through the captive portal and all you device can log into the router. Happy surfing. That's all. As easy as that.

Hi Matt, a most interesting video. In the list of features of the Slate, you mentioned it had the ability to assume the MAC address of a device to “fool” a Wi-fi source into thinking it was communicating with a single computer rather than a router. Can this feature be found on the smaller Mango as well? Many thanks

    • @greenmanreddog
      @greenmanreddog 5 років тому +2

Yes it can - I've just bought a Mango and it can do this. You may find you don't need to clone the MAC address in hotel MAC-authenticated wifi scenario though, as long as you connect through the mango in router mode when you first register on the wifi. The hotel wifi will only see your mango's MAC address and so will register that. Any clients that connect to the wifi through the mango router will appear to come from the same (mango) MAC address, from the access point's perspective. I'm yet to test this out, but I can't see why it won't work.

@@technovangelist You're most welcome... I'm many years past feeding babies now. I got to try out my theory with the GL-iNet 'Mango' at a hotel last night and it does work. I connected two separate devices via the router. The first connected device (a laptop) had to go through the hotel's authentication process but the second device (a phone) just connected directly to the Internet as though it was already authenticated. This connection was using my (router's) MAC address to identify me so any devices connected via the router appeared as the same device to the hotel's wifi. Also, as I was powering the router from a power bank (it only draws about 15mA), I was able to place the router in a location in the hotel room where the hotel wifi signal was strongest. So the relatively low signal strength at the desk in the hotel room, where I wanted to use my laptop, wasn't a problem.

Would be great to test WireGuard" on this if you can get a trial for a VPN that offers it. I don't know any provider that offers it. A reviewer on Amazon UK said:
"I really like the Wireguard VPN support. It works very well and the performance has persuaded me to switch VPN service to one that supports it. On low power hardware like this, Wireguard goes about 3 or 4 times faster than OpenVPN. GL.iNet have made Wireguard easy to set up and use. Once I had it configured (which didn't need any command-line setup or ssh) I made the little switch on the side if the router turn the VPN on and off as needed."

    • @technovangelist

Hmmm not sure what you are asking. This is a WiFi access point. You can also connect to an existing WiFi or wired connection. 50Mbps is pretty easy to achieve on the router itself, but that speed to the internet will depend on the uplink connection you use. If connecting to your home internet connection and you only have 30Mbs then you will be lucky to hit 25Mbps. But if your home internet is 1Gbps like what I have at home then getting up to 250-300Mbps is probably likely.

@@technovangelist I have just bought it, I can give you some of my first impressions.
Feels like a solid router, although my main router is in the same room, I used the slate as a repeater with a different SSID, and I check from time to time if my devices switch back to the main router, they didn't yet (2 days of continuous use).
Streaming videos on 5g channel is working great
Heating up is just ok, the top is warm and the button is a bit warmer, but nothing to be worried about if you live in a cool place, a hot place can be a problem.
What's not so good, I used a 128 Samsung top of shelf SD card as shared folder but didn't like the writing speed (1 to 2 mbs) or less.
Best thing to do, is transfer files to USB flash drive then insert in the slate and enjoy smb shared folder.
The drive was Easily found on an Ipad pro using playerXtream.
VPN didn't use it yet, adblocker this is also interesting but I would love to see a step by step plug-in installation and management from an expert user.

This is even so on the Cambridge Dictionary site which offers both UK and American pronunciations separately. So weird.

I assume you are referring to the start of this thread. As per my other messages there are lots of pronunciations of lots of words and claiming that there is one way and I say it wrong is, well, wrong. Growing up with a British dictionary in an American home helped make that point very clear. Living in different countries and visiting over a hundred for work and play makes one very forgiving on this stuff. Things like jigabytes for gigabytes or cave hat for caveat. Or maths or aluminium. I think just having a show with an American and Jeremy Clarkston from TopGear battling it out would be an amazing education for much of the world. So don’t let folks get you upset about stuff like that. There will always be folks who think their way is the only way in the world. We know different.
