I drive through the north shore a lot and one can only dream of living along the lake like that. It’s wonderful and it also makes me really sad. The racial disparity is so intense, as well as the residential segregation. If someone drove from east Garfield park and worked their way to the north shore, they would see the stark racial and residential disparities. Even if things improved in Chicago, it would never compare to the gorgeous land that was acquired in the northshore in the late 1800s. They truly got the best land, the most space for the least amount of people, while the city is crowded with these crammed apartments filled with the lower class. They also made sure the north shore was predominantly white, and it still is 80-94% white. I wish there was a way to improve the quality of Chicago residential living considering the feeling one gets visiting these places and comparing it to the urban life…as a brown woman I know I may never have the opportunity these people did to build those gorgeous homes along the north shore at the PRICES they did back in the day. The were afforded the opportunities simply because they were white (i think it was 2,000 homes were offered to white prospective home buyers while only 38 black families were even allowed to look in the mid 1900s). It’s a testament to the divide in Chicago. The city that built the most beautiful buildings, and also built the worse system of redlining segregation the country had ever seen. Still, I am grateful I can drive down that scenic route, stop at a beach from time to time, and continue to dream/work hard for myself. It’s great motivation to see beauty like that.
Am I the only one who would never want to buy a house on the beach in colder climate like Chicago. I would much rather it being more down south, I know those waters get really cold pretty quick.
In the winter, it usually stays a few degrees warmer along the lake. The lake water can only get so cold before it would eventually freeze. It stays warmer than the air temperature, which drops well below freezing in Chicago, and actually warms the surrounding air. In the summer the lake has a wonderful cooling effect.
@@strqrt70 People who don't live in Chicago are not aware of this fact. Lake Michigan is an inland ocean, and has its micro climate. It influences the weather patterns to a great degree. It is warmer by the lake during the winter, and cooler during the summer.
No, friend….the south suburbs suck. Sorry. Is it the Cal Sag? The water reclamation along the Stevenson? There’s a definite stench in the air down there.

Yes but no Hurricanes here.
Do you think they only have one home?
In the winter, it usually stays a few degrees warmer along the lake. The lake water can only get so cold before it would eventually freeze. It stays warmer than the air temperature, which drops well below freezing in Chicago, and actually warms the surrounding air. In the summer the lake has a wonderful cooling effect.
@@strqrt70 People who don't live in Chicago are not aware of this fact. Lake Michigan is an inland ocean, and has its micro climate. It influences the weather patterns to a great degree. It is warmer by the lake during the winter, and cooler during the summer.
@@LUIS-ox1bv True ! We live in east central Illinois & even our weather is affected by the lakefront climate !
Don’t sleep on the south suburbs mansions either - Palos Park, Homer Glenn and Orland Park.
Not that range in prices. If you would say Hinsdale , La Grange , Western Springs , Oakbrook, they fall into a category.
Also Inverness….
No, friend….the south suburbs suck. Sorry. Is it the Cal Sag? The water reclamation along the Stevenson? There’s a definite stench in the air down there.
Lake Michigan is eventually going to have her way with many of these properties.
This is crazy one years property tax could buy me a house paid in full wow beautiful homes but winter time freezing 🥶
You're right about that! There's a mansion in the area that had a tax bill closer to 700k.
I Wonder Will Chicago South Shore Have Mansions Too?
No, but the neighborhoods Hyde Park and South Shore are unique. South Shore in particular has smaller but very nice looking homes. Unfortunately the crime rate is high.

@@maureencora1 ya know what Maureen, I forgot to mention the mansions on Martin Luther king dr. I think they’re condos now but they’re still pretty sweet looking.

The historic ones on Prairie Avenue are beautiful without being as gargantuan.

These estimates, seem way off to me
Thanks for watching! Are you thinking higher or lower?
@@chicago4k542if these were located on Long Island, New York, they’d be much higher.
I agree way too low. The house at 595 Sheridan at 42:30 was 12 million just for the land in 2001. I bet it’s closer to 30 million today.
Music?
Fun, but please review your printed grammar before releasing. "Movies was"?? Just a thought.
Also most wealthiest.
Thank you for the correction.
@@chicago4k542 I know, it's a little snarky. The weird part is, I focus on the little misstep and lose the larger content because of the distraction. Glad you weren't offended. Lived as a kid in Kenilworth, so obviously enjoyed the video.
Houses on water top cold to swim in. I'll keep my Hawaii bungalow any time over this.
Right. Living on an expensive tiny, little island thousands of miles from anywhere is prefereable? Apparently not to the many Pacific islanders living on the mainland. Hawaii has a warm climate and beautiful beaches, but not much beyond that. Lived there for two years. It gets old like everything else.
@@LUIS-ox1bv 2 years? Lol. Your opinion. I'll take the people, the weather and being away from California..f...g cesspool filled with plastic people..I lived there for 21 years. Lots of California people here.. it's more expensive than Hawaii. You belong in that sh..t hole place
We love cold lake in hot , steamy summer days. A water temperature of 72F is not cold. 😅
Why would you live in Chicago if you have lots of money?
go to barrington
Yes, I heard Barrington has incredible mansions. I may do a video at some point.
Barrington Hills particularly has some great homes but even those aren’t comparable to the north shore mansions on the lake….particularly when you get up to Lake Forest
Barrington Hills.
So many new builds replaced the more stately old money homes.
You can stick your hand out your window and almost literally shakes hands with your wealthy neighbor.
Did you even get to lake forest?
No, I haven't. I just may go back there to do a part 2.
i do love to see how the other half lives just as much as anyone else. but at the sametime i don't feel that just anyone should be able to get how much they pay in property taxes like in this video.
Amazing greed. Do not envy these people.
Get on with it!
many of us can't event afford for property tax with full year salary.
The first house is not the cubs owner's home it is two homes north of the house you said it was
Are you talking about Laura's mansion at 03:49?
@@chicago4k542 yes
@@tvviewer4500 Interesting! Thanks for your input. Are you talking about the property with the flat roof with solar panels? If so, do you have any type of info to back that up? If you know something I don't (articles, pictures, home builders, Landscapers) that tie to that property of the Ricketts living there, that'll be great. I just like to get the facts straight for this video. Thanks!
@@chicago4k542 I am very confident the mansion at 03:49 is indeed owned by Laura and her wife. I realize her two brothers live nearby. Is it possible one of her brothers owns a mansion north of Laura's?
@@markhayden4386 I believe so too. I just wanted to see what info TV VIEWER came up with.
I didn't hear nothing back, and it was expected!
Anyways, yes, one of Laura's Brothers (Thomas Ricketts/ Executive Chairman & co-owner of the Chicago Cubs) resides several blocks to the north of her. His mansion can be seen at 45:21 in this video.
I KNOW one of the celebrity who bought a home and it's not in chicago region .
And the home isn't a mansion and it's the only home that person lives in .
Even if I was a billionaire or millionaire , I would never want a Mansion ,
I wouldn't feel comfortable in it . I have a home size of 5,000 sq ft , big enough .
So sad how they took The beaches away for everyone to enjoy and they got indoor pools . California , New Jersey, Puerto Rico even Florida have open beach’s for world to enjoy.
We have 23 public beaches in Chicago. More than enough.
