  • Polavaram Project is a multi-purpose irrigation national project on the Godavari River in the West and East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh. The project has been accorded national project status by the Union Government of India.
Polavaram dam is set to have the highest discharge capacity in the world. At 50 lakh cusecs, it is set to surpass even the 3 Georges Dam of China, one of the largest dams in the world having a discharge capacity of 4 lakh cusecs. The spillway built with 48 gates is set to have the highest discharge capacities, these gates are operated by hydraulic technology, 96 hydraulic cylinders for 48 gates are manufactured in Germany. After the spillway is constructed 2 temporary cofferdams are to be built to the sides of the main dam to divert the flow of the river water, these cofferdams will be constructed by jet grouting crosses inside the ground. Polavaram is Asia’s biggest dam being constructed. The project would help eradicate the drought from the geography of the state.
Polavaram has become the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh providing an added benefit to almost all the river basins from Aandhpur districts to Shrikaculum. The project is expected to be completed by December 2021. With the mission to sustain thousands of lives around the region, Polavaram is slowly proving to be the real boon to the state and lifeline of Andhra Pradesh.
