  • The outboard had about 8 hours on it when we started the day. I put another 2 hours on it while making this video. Ill make an oil change video for the 10 hour break in change. I had a lot of fun running around Foster even had a chance to do a little fishing.

Great video, hope the engine is serving you well. The reason the tohatsu does not start on first pull is , the first and second pull is used to charge up the fuel infection system. I've always heard of people saying the tohatsu never starts on the first pull, this is the reason why.

I just got the same. Just with electrical start and with power tilt. Was the only one I could get. There is a shortage.

Did you find that, during the break-in period, the ecu on the engine would automatically limit your RPM's? I'm breaking in a Tohatsu MFS9.9 on my inflatable, and I thought it was weird that it would not go above about 3k rpm in the first couple of hours. Then after a while longer I thought, "Oh, man, this thing will never plane." But later that same day, it went to about 4,200rpm and it planed beautifully (this was still at or below 75% throttle).
Anyway - I'm trying to carefully follow the manual on how to break in the engine and I just wondered if you noticed that the engine itself is making sure that the owner does not run it too hard until the break-in is complete?
    Thanks for the video!

I didn't really notice that. The first few hours of running the motor was in a barrel so the rpm was never able to be very high. Interesting to hear they have or may have a feature like that to keep ppl from destroying there motors in the first few hours.

I have 30hp 2012 2 stroke Tohatsu, great outbord, but very impressed with 20hp 4 stroke

I've used a lot of 2 strokes over the years and love them, but I really am starting to love the 20 HP 4 stroke. It almost makes gas.

How are you finding starting up the motor after it has warmed up . First start for me is 2 pulls. Fish for a bit go to restart 6 pulls. Still running in have 5 hours on it .

    • @DFNW
      @DFNW  3 роки тому +1

First 20 hours 3 pulls every start warm or cold. Now it's 2 pulls warm or cold.

@@scottmfreemansf Ordered one and they are on backorder. I bought an hour meter/tach so I can accurately break it in (once it shows up!). Will be going on a 12' inflatable SIB, should be pretty quick.

I use Tohatsu efi outboards. it takes 2 pulls from cold to start. once warm it takes 1 pull. this is the same for all the tohatsu efi pull start outboards iv had

That's a fine motor. Off topic, but I believe your transducer is on the wrong side. Assuming the prop on your Tohatsu turns clockwise (as seen standing behind the motor facing forward toward the bow), most fish finder brands recommend that the transducer be mounted on the starboard side to minimize interference from turbulence. Your fish finder may be different or, perhaps, your Toshiba prop rotates counterclockwise, which would be unusual, I think. Cheers,

Your correct I do run it on the wrong side. This is mostly because I run my electric trolling motor on the other side and I have never had an issue with the fish finder and prop turbulence.

@@DFNW Ok. Wasn't trying to be a smart a__. But, thought perhaps with your new 20hp Tohatsu there may be more turbulence now than you had with your smaller motor. BTW, I'm gong to be ordering a Tohatsu 20hp. You still like yours? Did order it online, or buy it from a local dealer in Oregon?

@@shannonyork5300 I am still very happy with the tohatsu when I was looking at getting a new motor It was a toss up between getting the 15hp or the 20 hp. In the end the 20 was what was available at maxxum marine in eugene and a good price, so I jumped on it. Now I'm glad I did because with two people in my boat It needs the full 20 to get on plane easy. Only Issue Ive had and I know a lot of other people have is it makes a rattle tinging sound at mid power. From idle to about 1/4 it sounds great but from 1/4 to 1/2 it rattles. I don't worry about it because I see a lot of the mercury and tohatsu owners have this sound. Other than that I am very happy with the motor. I did shop around a lot before getting it looked online and locally around oregon. I paid maybe 50 dollars more at the store than if I would of purchased it online.

@@DFNW Ok, thanks. Yes, I've read about that sound with both the Tohatsu and the Mercury (made by Tohatsu). But, overall most everything I've read has been positive.
I'll probably buy mine from an Oregon dealer. There are several in the Portland area, but I've not been overly impressed with them so far. I may check with Maxxum.
Do you have the Long Shaft or the Short Shaft? Which prop pitch came on your engine?
      Thanks. Cheers,

@@shannonyork5300 I'm not 100% sure on pitch, when I get to my storage location again Ill double check but I believe it comes with a 9 pitch. My motor is the long shaft version.
