IIRC even Slipknot’s website had Mick listed as their “Lead Guitarist” for a long time. Over time I think Jim started playing more solos as he wrote more and more of the music.
You can tell Micks solos compared to Jims, Jims are more Apreggios whereas Micks sound more metally if u get what I'm saying lol (and Jims tone always seems a little softer)

Jim is a mastermind at winging it. He's a great writer, player, and performer. He writes the most unique riffs and solo's imo. You can feel it when Jim is playing. They're both amazing at their craft.

You can hear the difference in styles, Jim is much more I’d say “bluesy” while Mick really has that aggressive punch you in the throat style. Great combo, Mick can really put his spin on the brutal songs while Jim can really bring out the medium paced MASSIVE riffs/solos.

If you aren't familiar with each of their guitar tones, the easiest way to pick out a Mick solo from a Jim solo is hearing which side of your headphones you hear the guitar from. If its from the right side, its a Mick solo, left side is Jim.

They just haven't played it live ever. Some songs they kinda just ignore. They play fast technical solos like Pulse Of The Maggots live, I don't see why they'd randomly have another person do a solo in their style on a song.

Jim’s parts are in the left channel (speakers) and Mick’s parts are in the right channel. Sometimes its hard to say who’s playing the solo (ex. Gehenna) cuz its “coming” thru the main channel, in that case you just do your research

Solos on All Hope Is Gone are so good. Gehenna is underrated AF. Spiders is just awesome too, the tone and the licks on the solo are absolutely filthy.

I always thought of them like Megadeth guitarists, both do a lot of leads but one seems to sway closer to the rhythm side.

Mick and Jim are such a solid combo of guitarist, it's hard to consider one rhythm or leads cause they both pull their weight in both.
I personally see it as they switch between rhythm and lead depending on the song

Mick has said they always play songs faster at shows then on the albums, which I guess is why they tend to not play the solos as on record
