Excellent. I really appreciated your recognition that you may not be the best to learn from. I don't agree with that, but your sentiment reflects the fact that a really good artist is open to the idea that he or she can always improve, implying that one may not be the "best" at something. It's genuinely modest of you. As well, everyone learns differently and are at different stages of learning, so for some, your demonstration may be exactly what one needs in order to learn well. I presume that's why you uploaded this demo: to reach those who can relate to your experience while leaving open (to those who may not learn as much from it) the option that there may be other videos better suited to one's experience. Sorry to ramble, but I've noticed successful artists tend to look at their work with this kind of modesty. I'm not surprised to see it in you. :-)
Aw, Thanks Ed. :) You always leave the nicest thoughtful comments, they show you have really watched my video and care about it, you have no idea how much that means to me :)
One of the things that fascinates me about your drawings of feet is that the way you sculpt the anatomy and the movements it really feels easy to draw parallels to the feet of other creatures which to me seems like both a really magical thing and one that seems like it might be very educational.
This is a FANTASTIC VIDEO actually. I've been having a hard time finding videos of gouache skin tones that are actually helpful and then I stumbled upon this. This one is great! It's super involved and really shows me what you're doing. I only just started with gouache in 2017 so I know nothing. I'm usually a digital artist. An issue I've run into with gouache is I'm having a hard time doing layers. I'm seeing a lot people only doing one layer of like tiles/paneling that they then blended together. You on the other hand are actually making lots of layers on top of each other and that is what I want to do. I'm happy to finally finally finallllly see a video of layering. So thank you. Thank you so so much :D
Welcome to the gouache club!! :D I'm so glad my video was helpful, the more I thought about it, the more it just seemed to me like I didn't go anywhere with my explanations, and I had the feeling my video might've actually been more confusing than anything, haha. I'm so happy to hear that it was helpful to you, that really is what it is all about :) Thank you for taking the time to watch it and comment!! Layers in gouache can be tricky, as it's all about being careful not to reactivate the layers underneath, but it's a medium that can be use with very little water, so that tends to be the trick I think. It's all about practice, and I'm very much still a beginner in it. Let me know how you find it!! :)
I love the graphic ink outlines around the feet. It contrasted really nicely against how organic the feet look. Thank you for this video, it was greatly informative! I want to tackle gouache eventually, but I feel like I should get further with watercolours before buying more paint.
Haha, I'm an outline addict for sure :) I'm glad you like the video! You should defo try gouache, it's easier than watercolour I think, although watercolour are wonderful. How are you finding them?
I like them, but I work with them with very water because I like the pigment. That's why I was so interested in gouache. But for my first time using any paints, watercolour is such a forgiving medium and easy to get into!
I love your commentary and honest discussion about the way your draw and paint. The conclusions you draw, the mistakes you make and the lessons you learn and then how you process / accept it is amazing. I adore your videos and i'm just so thrilled I found your channel. It's so nice to have art related struggles "validated" per say by seeing that other people go through these same processes before a finished work etc. beautiful work
Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoy my videos :) I want to be as honest as possible about my process, doubts, and evolution, as I feel that that is as much part of evolving and improving as an artist as everything else, and if I can help others that way somehow too, I'd been over the moon :) Thank you for your support!
I love the way gouache looks, and I'm trying really hard to get the hang of it. I started off with watercolor, ok, so it's kind of hard for me to transition to a thicker medium. I love this video though!! And the rhinos! Very nice!! :DD
Thank you ^^ I actually feel a bit awkward about this particular video now, as it feels a bit outdated and not as structured as I would like it. I would also like to cover more skin tones. I'll be doing a more comprehensive one in the future I think ^^
I love this. I love that you leave a space for the lines between the toes; I love all the different colors you use and how you explain your amending process as you go; I love the whole video. I'll be checking out the rest of your channel. I've had some good gouaches for a few years but am not a painter; I find it all very intimidating. But the more I watch the more I think maybe I can figure it out. :)
Thank you for these helpful videos! Even though you said you were just a beginner here, the end result of your painting was beautiful and you explained everything so concisely.
This was great! I have not used gouache in years, and honestly a step-by-step would not have been as helpful to me as this was. I love how honest and organic this video was. Subscribed!
Aw, I'm so glad, your cmment makes me very happy. :) I was looking back on that video and thinking it was way too all over the place, ha. I'm happy it was useful, thank you very much for the sub :) and happy new year!!
This is so funny, around the time you posted this video, I was heavily pregnant and spent lots of time drawing in my sketchbook to occupy myself. I found myself sketching the exact same feet references that you have here! You really do bring these to life! Well done!
This is excellent work. I love feet! Amazing structures and musculature. I think the one you liked the most was more posterised (deeper tones -ie contrast).
Thank you! Well, I might not be the best person to ask as I still beginning in it myself. I use Winsor and Newton and am very happy with them, but I haven't tried many, so I might not be the best authority on the matter :)
I was wondering what kinda paper you paint on and the paint cuz I don't know anything about painting? Except that I don't want to paint with water colour and it doesn't look like water colour? But did like to learn how to paint
+Hello World Hello :) all my materials are on the description. If you want to know more about gouache, the paint I'm using, you can check out my tutorial also 😊
are you using the gouache straight out of the tubes and fresh or are you using it kind of like watercolor from a pallet (dried out and rehydrated with water)?
MsQjoe No problem, I try my best to reply to everyone :) Good luck with gouache, it's definitely good fun, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions :)
Hello! je suis bien contente de savoir que je peux t'aider un peu :) Cette video est vieille maintenant par contre, il est grand temps que j'en fasse unee autre, haha ^^
I'm working on a proper tutorial series that will include all the skin tones. This wasn't a tutorial, it was an explanation on how I did those specific studies.
I'm using an unbranded sketchbook from the London Graphic Centre. The paper is like medium thick card, it's really great for gouache. :) But unbranded :( Reply ·
i find it's better to work dark to light with gouche, that may be just me but whenever i do a mid tone before shading it ruins the painting, great video
Oh yes, I love his work, he's fantastic! And I'm trying dark to light more these days, to expand my gouache knowledge and technique, but I love both :)
I really love the look of gouache, as well as the sort of 'unblended' look but I just can't get the hang of how to achieve it without the painting looking absolutely awful, I also have to stop myself from over blending since i'm used to oils and acrylics, so making everything really smooth is a habit that I want to get out of.

I love your use of distinct purple tones. Complements the other colours nicely and adds so much depth. Very well done.
Thank you very much. Skin tones are a hell of a learning curve....Oo

Oh man, I SO know what you mean. I'm a watercolour gal myself, and I'm still coming to grips with the texture and feel of gouache...
Excellent. One of the Reasons your videos are so helpful is your explanations of why you do what you do.
Thank you ^^ I actually feel a bit awkward about this particular video now, as it feels a bit outdated and not as structured as I would like it. I would also like to cover more skin tones. I'll be doing a more comprehensive one in the future I think ^^

The underside of the foot is so well done too. Great demo!

Love this! could you also do African American skin tones?
Definitely!! I'm actually working on a more comprehensive and better structured tutorial, so hopefully I'll have something up soon ^^
This is so funny, around the time you posted this video, I was heavily pregnant and spent lots of time drawing in my sketchbook to occupy myself. I found myself sketching the exact same feet references that you have here! You really do bring these to life! Well done!
Haha, Thank you! I need to do more feet...I find good references are oddly difficult to come by with feet! Congratulations on your little one :)
Where did you get the firefly photos? I’d love to try these too
These are so beautiful! I love your technique
Thank you! My technique has actually changed a little since this video, I'll hopefully have the time to do an updated video soon....
I'm Caucasian, and it's so true that you can see the veins on my hand, and even on my nose! Amazing Art!
Stunning!
This may sound creepy, but as a prosthetic makeup artist....I Love veins O-O, haha
Nora Donovan the small details count i guess
This is excellent work. I love feet! Amazing structures and musculature. I think the one you liked the most was more posterised (deeper tones -ie contrast).
Myriam just found your channel and it's fantastic. Thank you for putting these videos together they are extremely helpful :)
I love your technique and how in-depth your explanations are! I was wondering what you used to outline every painting.
Thank you! I usually use a Pentel Pocket brush pen :)
I'm in love your art and tutorials. gouache is amazing. Keep doing your beautiful work!! Kisses from Brazil
+Everton J Castro Thank you very much!!😊😊
I JUST LOVE IT💛
Love your presentation. Am new at gouache and find your approach answers a lot of my questions. What kind of brushes do you prefer?
I enjoy your videos very much. Very helpful and your pleasant to listen to.
I love this video! I don’t find myself drawing feet that often, so this would definitely help for a study! Feet are underrated it’s so sad😔🤣🤩
love your style! reminds me of art nouveau, very pretty
+guy Thank you!!😊
Hmmm should we buy more white paints for gouache painting? cause it seems lot of whites used in gouache right? any recommendations?
great coloring, im about to buy my first gouache set, any recommendations for brands?
Thank you! Well, I might not be the best person to ask as I still beginning in it myself. I use Winsor and Newton and am very happy with them, but I haven't tried many, so I might not be the best authority on the matter :)
any advice from any level is welcome and thankful XD
Talens and reeves
i can’t get like an even wash of color for a base it’s all different. is it the paints i’m using or am i doing something wrong?
the video is so cute and awesome :) I watched it twice already ^_^
Oh woaw, thank you so much, that means a lot!!:)
Can you do one for darker skin tones ?
I'm planning on redoing the whole tutorial and cover as many skin tones as possible, so yes, will definitely be doing darker skin tones :)
Great work! What kind of paper do you use for gouache? =)
Great Video. Very informative and I love your style. What paper are you using?
Thank you :) I'm using an unbranded sketchbook from the London Graphic Centre. The paper is like medium thick card, it's really great for gouache.
I was wondering what kinda paper you paint on and the paint cuz I don't know anything about painting? Except that I don't want to paint with water colour and it doesn't look like water colour? But did like to learn how to paint
+Hello World Hello :) all my materials are on the description. If you want to know more about gouache, the paint I'm using, you can check out my tutorial also 😊
Subscribed straight away, I think you can learn a lot through observation. Keep at it you're brilliant 😄
You're very sweet, thank you very much :)
are you using the gouache straight out of the tubes and fresh or are you using it kind of like watercolor from a pallet (dried out and rehydrated with water)?
Both. It depends on the effect I want to achieve. The more opaque I want the paint, the fresher paint I'll use, if that makes sense.
Myriam's Illustrations thanks for responding! I'm just getting into gouache and trying to learn how people actually manage their paints.
MsQjoe No problem, I try my best to reply to everyone :) Good luck with gouache, it's definitely good fun, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions :)
what brand is the pen you use at the end?
Staedtler Pigment Liner (looks like a 0.3mm nib)
how to paint medium-deep skin tones ?
lake turner I'm putting together a full skin tone tutorial with aaalll the shades (hopefully)
what liner pen did you use for this?
I use black Staedtler pigment liners!
Thank you! This is amazing by the way, you're so talented!
What about all the other skin tones
I'm working on a proper tutorial series that will include all the skin tones. This wasn't a tutorial, it was an explanation on how I did those specific studies.
Love how you say the word "gouache."
Haha, I don't realise :) I guess my french side must be showing through ^^
what sketchbook are you using! :o
I'm using an unbranded sketchbook from the London Graphic Centre. The paper is like medium thick card, it's really great for gouache. :) But unbranded :(

p.s. you should check out Jeff Watts's gouache painting videos they're long but really really helpful
