- 11 days after the tie was initially intended to be played, 4th Division leaders Northampton Town came to St James Park well fancied for an act of Giant Killing. United were rooted to the bottom of the First Division and on an unwanted run of 5 consecutive defeats and in need of a moral boosting win.
Future (and current) Newcastle Chief Scout Graham Carr was working his magic for The Cobblers back then guiding them to promotion come May

Newcastle or Northampton fan? I remember this well even though I never went. Mad how certain games/cup runs stick with you.
That was a very good northampton team. A lot of players played div 1.
