This country is in so much trouble. There was a white supremacist march through Charleston WV today. Well ok. I know that. However, how did they “interpret “the law that was in place when they overturned Roe vs Wade? To me, they’re not interpreting anything but finding a way to give immunity to a person who created an insurrection, which under the 14th amendment was very clear. Yet they ignored that.

After watching this episode? Not me. (UK) I'm shaking my head in disbelief at the US. I'm hoping Michael & Ben are wrong about the supreme court, but I'm terrified that they are right. What happens in the US usually affects the UK fairly fast (the UK is sometimes referred to as the 51st state for a reason). Scary days.

I am not very hopeful about the decisions that will come out of this supreme court. It's time to expand the court, install term limits, change the nomination process, and put enforceable ethics standards in place. The founders did not forsee a court as partisan and feckless as this one.

That one has no right to exercise a vote induces a feeling of helplessness, in addition to anxiety regarding the next presidency - anxiety which is widespread in all the cultural circles that I know of, encompassing civil servants, medical doctors, academics, indeed, pretty much anyone with a university degree. I listen to all of your broadcasts. What you offer is absolutely outstanding, a model of intelligence and judiciousness. We used to look to the BBC for such coverage, decades ago, before successive Conservative governments drew its teeth. During the 'presidential immunity' hearing, one of the Liberal justices should have asked: "Sometimes Supreme Court justices have to rule against presidents. If a president came to view the justices on this court as political enemies, could he have us killed with full immunity? Would that also be part of his official duties?"
Often, conservatives only recognise the effects of their policies when THEY are personally affected. If the Trump lawyer had argued that assassination of a Supreme Court justice was a possibility (as he was almost bound to do based on his previous arguments), it might have knocked some sense into at least John Roberts.
For my part, I don't think that this question is purely theoretical. Trump wants to be a dictator/monarch. Currently, the Supreme Court justices are the only group of people in the government with quasi-monarchical absolute power - in other words, they are his COMPETITION. Also, Trump is profoundly vindictive - his past is littered with people who were 99% loyal to him, but who were nonetheless discarded and destroyed for their perceived 1% disloyalty. Even the current right-wing Supreme Court has ruled against him occasionally, and just one adverse ruling is enough for them to make Trump's enemies list. If he ever got re-elected, I do not believe that he would let the Supreme Court escape his jealousy and vengeance.
The conservative justices are playing with fire. If they are arrogant enough to consign the country to the flames, Trump will burn them too.

I really don't think a lot of people get that world standing is important. Countries don't want to work with a country who has inner turmoil. The economy is linked with the rest of the world and what's happening. Americans seem to be very insular and to not realise this.
