Amazing! Was all grumpy this morning when I realized my battery wasn't charging in "sleep mode". Tried it all like you guys had, too. Finally came across your video and ta-da! Is now charging! Thank you very much!
Thank you for the video. I just purchased the RYOBI 40v string trimmer yesterday, thought I left it charging to find out it did not charge overnight and I have this issue. I will not even bother to call RYOBI customer service. I’m returning this product and buying a good old gas model.
Sorry to hear! Yes, battery operated has its own set of cons too. I definitely like that the gas powered trimmers are stronger, but I really love that I can interchange the ryobi batteries on all our tools…it’s so convenient and less maintenance at times. Whatever works best for someone right? Thanks for commenting & best of luck to you :)
It worked for me, great!! The only difficult part was to find the screwdriver, finally I found a kit for $15 with many sizes including the TR10. Thanks!!
Thanks to both of you for this. I appreciate the diligence and the explanation. I will only add that this works for Ryobi batteries 0P4401. The later batteries have a different set up and are not as straightforward as this one.
When I jumped it. You had to press the button in the back as well as reset it, at the same time. It does work, amazing. Also when resetting it with the paper clip, don't touch anything else, it will short out a circuit.
Kudos for figuring this complex issue out. WTH couldn't Ryobi have mounted the reset button externally to save all this work and frustration? My guess is that they want to sell more of those expensive batteries. Ryobi electric tools have always let me down which is why I only now use Bosch, Greenworks and Milwauke brand tools.
Milwaukee and Ryobi are basically the same now. They are owned by the same company and being made the same way. Hart tools are also owned by the same company. That’s why there are more brushless tools coming out.
Exactly , if they paid more attention to the structural and machemical quality end of their equipment... we might not have to deal with another battery , that had outlived , the thing it was designed power ......
Thanks so much for sharing this. With so many complains om these kind of defects, I wish Ryobi come up with some new button or reset feature in upcomimg battery desigsn. I'm fan of Ryobi, this issue made me think about keep running their products, wondering why this easy fix was is not in the instructions ?. Anyways. god bless you guys for this contributions, you saved me $400 =)😊

Hey thanks for this! My battery was a little bit different inside. There were no holes to jump a wire to. So, just did some cleaning connections and solder points. I pressed the exposed button, and my 4 green lights lit up. I placed on my charger and no green/red flashing but a charging green light. Woot woot! I went out and attached to my blower tool and viola’ it works. I had already received my free Warranty replacement..s I guess I now have an extra.
This worked! TR10 Torx bit. I used two earrings to depress reset at the same time.I had to hold it for several seconds, then the light turned green. Thank you, thank you!
Happy it was helpful to you Dat! We had let all three batteries sit for too long without charging them so supposedly they were all completely drained below where the charger could even register them. After this video we were able to fully charge all three and we successfully used them yesterday to do some yard work!
Yay, that was our intention!! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment, we were both super happy to read that it worked for you!! We appreciate your feedback and happy new year to you!
Please pardon the delay in response! When we placed our batteries on the charger there were no lights on the battery also and the charger was flashing green and red which meant defective battery. It worked for us using the method in this video, hopefully it will work for you too! Keep us posted and have a great weekend :))
Thanks so much for your kind comment, that made my day ☺️ we really do make a great team despite any flaws people want to point out 😅 haha! Thanks again, have an awesome weekend!
Omg!! It worked!!!!! Thanks so much you guys!! I was thinking I was about to be out 209 bucks.. does it work on the smaller ones I wonder??...🤔.. him.. you guys should check em out!!! I have a ton for the drill circ. Saw exc. You guys rock!! ❤
Hi Mark! Pardon the delayed response. Did you see the green led lights flash when you jumped the reset and pushed the small button on the back there? I would say to try it again if you haven’t already and make sure those lights flash as it’s being jumped and right when that button is being pushed. Also, we thoroughly cleaned all the connecting points as well with rubbing alcohol… where the battery charging ports are and all the little connection pieces. We also cleaned the actual charger too. After all of that and putting it back together if it is still flashing the error lights I would probably just call the Ryobi warranty number that I have listed in my video description …their customer service is actually pretty awesome and they will usually just send you a new battery right away even if it’s a bit over the warranty date! They want you to have your battery, charger and usually the Ryobi tool that you use it for on hand during the phone call. We made this video because we wanted instant gratification and really wanted to mow our lawn the same day but didn’t want to fork out the extra $600 in new batteries from Home Depot to make that happen hahah but if you are willing to wait for Ryobi to send you a new battery (within two weeks) then that might be the best option for you plus save you time and headache instead of trying to fix it yourself :) good luck!!
Yayyy, amazing!!! Thank you for sharing Ramey, that makes me so happy to hear!! Ours having been working perfectly since we made this video, I’m sure yours will do the same :) have an excellent weekend, we appreciate you commenting!!
I have a battery of 40v li-ion but load but when it is connected to the tool does not work I did tests but in negative is the one that does not pass current that I can do help me
Thanks for watching our video El Prof! I would follow the instructions we showed in this video, if this does not work for you I would recommend calling RYOBI warranty…the RYOBI phone number to call is listed in the description below the video. Best of luck to you!
Hi Gi! The screws are covered by small black plastic circular covers, I show them in the video there :) just pop (or dig) them out with the tip of a sharp knife or small screwdriver so you’ll then have access to the screws!! Let me know if it works and good luck!!
i have some smaller 1,5A that shows 1 green when pressed but in the charger it says fully charged, but in a tool there are no power? any ideas to sort them out? they are new but produced in 2019.
Q: did the fixed battery work in tool and for how long. I suspect that there is at least one cell that may not provide as much energy as the others and the battery will drain much sooner than a newer battery that never failed charging.
Thanks for your question! It’s been 5 months since we reset the three battery’s we had that’s shown there in the video, they are all still working great and we haven’t had any issues with charging or using them with our Ryobi tools! ( we use them for our ryobi lawn mower, weed whacker & turbo blower) After using them we place them on a charger to fully charge again and set aside before our next use. Have a great week!
yeah i hit the reset on mine and it did not work. The fault can be the board has failed and drained one cell below the safe limit to charge like 1.9 volts max limit to charge these cells with the board is 2.5 volts anything under that the battery will not charge thats when it take more drastic measures that is not for the average user to handle. Even after bringing the low voltage cell back up to the safe limit the problem will most likely happen again do to the malfunction of the board and after so many times of being pulled down below 2.8 volts per cell they loose capacity much more rapid. Its something like a lead acid battery being drained belore 10 volts to many time they dont last to long if that is done.
This is great! I am not there yet as one corner of the battery does not have an exposed screw to remove, but is just a flat black piece. Has anyone else had this???
It is a black plastic plug that covers the screw. Underneath the plastic plug is the same screw as the others. Just carefully pry it off and you will be good to go.
Although this fix will work on some batteries, I've tried this on two ryobi batteries with the exact same flashing signal so far, and it this tactic did not work on either.
Mine doesn't have the reset in that spot. It has a reset hole next to 4 other holes. Plus my screws are T15. My battery shows fully charged but won't work in my blower or weed eater. Other battery works fine.
Hmmm, maybe it’s a newer model! Did you try to jump or reset it yet? I hoped it worked for you :) If it’s newer I’m sure Ryobi would replace it no problem, I included their warranty number in this video’s description! Thank you for commenting, wishing you a great weekend!
@@CarelynAdventures can't figure out how to reset it, only one hole labeled "reset" so I'm not sure which other spot to jumper it to. I actually think mine is an earlier model, possibly first gen. Can't remember how long I've had it, at least 6 years, probably longer. It started acting up after we had a hard freeze (below 0°f, it was in my shed). I bought another spare and will keep this one in the chance I figure out how to reset it. As stated before, I have 2 chargers and it does the same thing in both. Other batteries work fine.
Heads up, there's a risk that opening battery will void your warranty and no replacement will be issued. Also the main reason they do this is because they drop under 30 volts. Connecting to negative screw and positive charge prong will allow you to charge above 30v and reset. Neg screw bottom left and pos prong that the charger usally connects to. You'll have to find a power supply that charges that high. If you don't see the 2 reset holes, look for the 4 small ones.
It'd your battery fall within the warranty period after the check with RYOBI they will replace it within two weeks... Just have the battery, charger and tool available near an outlet. Do this prior to opening your battery and instantly voiding the warranty. Especially before sitting on them and mulling it over for weeks, I got my replacement in two weeks no fuss no muss, no risk of fire or explosion.
Thank for your input Robert :) We have called for a warranty replacement before and thankfully Ryobi didn’t seem to concerned with a potential voided warranty or if it was past warranty etc…they seemed more concerned about their excellent customer service experience which was awesome! They didn’t even need the old battery back! I included Ryobis warranty number in the video description for people that choose to go that route. In this particular case we had these three batteries that were dead/not charging properly and we wanted to mow the grass that day but didn’t want to spend $600 on new batteries or wait for a warranty coverage to send a new one…so thankfully this method worked out for us and our particular situation :) hopefully it will help a few other people in a similar scenario. Have a great day!
My 10mm Torx screw doesn't have the little "tit" in the middle, but I've found that with a little effort you may be able to break these off enabling you to use a standard 10mm Torx. These are called tamper resistant Torx. Harbor Freight sells the whole set quite cheaply. Sadly, my board didn't have a reset place. Some of the later ones have an actual button. Thanks for the video!
Doesn’t have a two pin location ..press the button on the end..it lights up 1 green light..2 flashes, then the second light flashes with the first light..then all four flash.but still doesn’t power up.
Nope..even tried jumping it with another good battery…it takes a charge but immediately drains the voltage. Put it in a charger and it only displays a red light..doesn’t show green when it in the charger.
Sorry to hear that Joe…if it’s the same battery it should have it. It’s not an actual button or anything and It might not be labeled. There are two small pinholes with metal around them that you would insert the paper clip or metal loop and then push the battery led button like we show in the video. Hopefully you’ll be able to find it! if not, I would probably call the Ryobi number we have in the description and see if they’ll send you a new one for free :) best of luck to you!
these things now are 219.00 dollars a pop at home depot it was actually cheaper to buy a riobi weed eater with a 40v 4ah than the 40v 6ah battery yea its alil bit smaller but ihave a wead eater and a spare now

The 4th has a dummy plastic plug. Use a screw or drill bit, removes quickly that way otherwise almost impossible to pry off

Literally no one doing this has a warranty concern.
😆💯
Well you got a like and I hope this works I have two
Thank you for your feedback and thoughtfulness! Hope everything worked out for you ☺️ happy new year!
What does the other hole say? Rst and...?
Hope you got it figured out? Thanks for watching, have a great weekend!
Gnd/3.3v
in 2018+ batteries, there is no RST holes anymore...
I have the same battery and it works for about 10 minutes and then I have to charge it again for about an hour then it works for another 10 minutes
My screws were plain. My circuit board is different.
Tried it. The paper clip heated up and burn my fingers. Battery still flashing
$250 here in puerto rico
I had to reset my battery three times, and each time, they charge fully, but stop working in a few minutes.
One of the cells or more in the battery is depleted
Doesn’t have a two pin location ..press the button on the end..it lights up 1 green light..2 flashes, then the second light flashes with the first light..then all four flash.but still doesn’t power up.
Pardon the delay in response! Did you get it working? Is it the exact same battery?
Nope..even tried jumping it with another good battery…it takes a charge but immediately drains the voltage. Put it in a charger and it only displays a red light..doesn’t show green when it in the charger.
My battery doesn’t have the reset or I can’t find it.
Sorry to hear that Joe…if it’s the same battery it should have it. It’s not an actual button or anything and It might not be labeled. There are two small pinholes with metal around them that you would insert the paper clip or metal loop and then push the battery led button like we show in the video. Hopefully you’ll be able to find it! if not, I would probably call the Ryobi number we have in the description and see if they’ll send you a new one for free :) best of luck to you!
these things now are 219.00 dollars a pop at home depot
it was actually cheaper to buy a riobi weed eater with a 40v 4ah than the 40v 6ah battery yea its alil bit smaller but ihave a wead eater and a spare now
"a pop"?? who tf talks like that in the year 2023
@@ryannyc2919 me buddy.. thats who.. cuz i live in a VAN down by the river
We think you sound cool 😎 and rivers are so relaxing. Have an awesome weekend and thanks for your feedback!
Dang. It doesn't work for mine
This does work tho after multiple resets it will charge almost all the way then default again. Frustrating
This certainly worked...but then after only a few minutes of using the battery with lawnmower it went right back to "defective."
