    The "big box" Shrek vhs was made larger to fit on the shelf with the Disney clamshell cases as a genius marketing strategy

    Even if Shrek 1's dvd was release the same opening day as Monster Inc, that film made more money by being the 3rd successful movie of 2001 with $579.7 million dollars from the international box office. Even if it took years to get a proper sequel series, the meme status is not as big as the green ogre lord.

    Fun fact, at the time shrek sold the most DVDs of all time out of any movie
    So many people own shrek on dvd. You should cover some dvd releases. An interesting one is a shrek collection box that came out before Shrek the third. So just shrek, shrek 2, and shrek 3-d

      @@luispenick7448 It may be one of the most common DVD releases ever. I always see at least two copies at every thrift store. Interestingly though is that I almost never see the original 2001 release but rather the 2003 re-release. There’s a LOT to unpack with Shrek DVDs. I made a video on collecting Dreamworks DVDs a looong time ago and it definitely needs updating 👍

    Man this was a hit of nostalgia. I remember we had the VHS with the weird wide sleeve. Also it really bums me out that no critics today say “Two big thumbs way up” for modern movies that was truly THE indication of a cinematic masterpiece back in the day

    There was also a plain sleeve release of the first film that was only given to people who took part in some MLM scheme. I also made custom tapes for Shrek the Third, Forever After, and both Puss in Boots movies with 4:3 aspect ratio, bonus shorts, and fully printed sleeves.

    Other DreamWorks movies were sold in the same style of packaging that later copies of Shrek have. I've even seen some older DreamWorks Blu-rays with that style.
    Edit: Also Curse of the WereRabbit was the last DreamWorks movie on VHS (if you count the Aardman co-productions).

    I grew up with my aunt & uncle and they were major hold outs on DVD and didn’t get a player in the house till blu ray was already a thing, as such we got a lot of late VHS releases and I remember Shrek 2 being one of them. The idol parody at the end always made me annoyed because they directed you to vote online instead of choosing and showing a winner, and of course we didn’t have internet so it wasn’t until years later that I finally watched the dvd version with some friends and saw those endings 😅

    • @austin_the_brimstone

    Bloody Hell, no idea it was $40 for the original DVD
    Had the original Shrek on VHS but in the UK it was a different cover. I believe it was just the poster of Shrek, Fiona and Donkey fleeing from the Dragon.
    was re-watching this VHS of an old 1970s BBC children's show, and I was gobsmacked to see it started with a Shrek trailer! What a crossover I never expected 😂 ua-cam.com/video/LoBK88uq1A0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared

      That commercial placement is hilarious. Dreamworks marketing knows no bounds, they wanted EVERYONE to grab that Shrek VHS. Funny since after the theatrical release everybody already knew about Shrek. It really didn't need the massive marketing for a home media release. I bet they just wanted to rub it in Disney's face a second time...

    It would be very interesting know, whether the Shrek home releases were mastered from the original digital animation files or not. The home media releases Antz by DreamWorks were mastered from a 35mm copy of the film.

    • @austin_the_brimstone
      @austin_the_brimstone  Місяць тому

      @@classicmovieentertainment8467 Antz definitely was because that original DVD double-disc release is CRISP. Looks glorious on an HD tv. I wouldn’t be surprise if Shrek was. It also is a pretty sharp looking DVD. I have many other DVDs from the same time period and they all look super muddy and dirty. Shrek is a dang good transfer.

    There was also a Shrek VHS release in Australia (which I happen to have) which celebrated Shrek’s Academy Award win for Best Picture, alongside an accompanying 2-Disc DVD release which gave the box art a more classy look to it with a nice white background and golden font for the PG rating and all that.

    I mostly associate the cardboard VHS boxes with those low-budget lazily-put-together public domain VHS tapes of old cartoons and movies, and I tend to associate the clamshell cases with big-name companies like Disney, Dreamworks, and Warner Bros.
    Also, my local schools (I was born and raised in a small, mostly rural town) continued to use VHSs well into the 2010s, even when they started using DVDs.

    • @austin_the_brimstone
      @austin_the_brimstone  Місяць тому +1

      @@KoryGilesMusicGroup It’s weird that Dreamworks opted for this big box in order to make the release feel “prestige”. Maybe they felt all those clamshells were “kids stuff” and felt Shrek was a proper Academy nominated film? Either way I prefer the clamshell release. It just feels right.

    • @KoryGilesMusicGroup
      @KoryGilesMusicGroup Місяць тому +1
