    Song of the South should be available in the public domain because it's an important part of history that shouldn't be forgotten lest we be doomed to repeat it. It's also the first Disney role for Bobby Driscoll, who would later go on to be Peter Pan... Which may be another reason Disney would prefer it forgotten, Driscoll is a very bad example of Hollywood's treatment of child actors in the golden age

      We are already living in a world that is doomed and repeating history. Racism is worse than ever because people want to bury the past. Slavery isn't even being taught in schools because it's too controversial. The past happened and history is fact. Ignoring it doesn't make it go away. We have to look in the mirror and see the horrors of the past, no matter how gruesome, to learn from mistakes of the past.

Not entirely your fault though, as technology addiction has rewired our brains to consider anything “tedious” that isn’t constantly giving us dopamine hits. Hopefully once you’re old enough to put the phone down again and not miss it you’ll be able to rediscover some golden-age gems from a new perspective. Expecting every single second of a movie to pertain directly/literally to moving along the central plot is a modern ADHD-induced sentiment. Sometimes it’s just funny to watch the dwarfs as they struggle to bathe for a few minutes.

Especially considering the film in question is anything BUT dissolving of the repetition built up around it. Unfortunately, Disney has convinced people to mindlessly see their perspective, taking away peoples ability to have discussion. I totally agree with you that it should be allowed to be studied and even watched for what it was without it being such a big deal. Apart from the questionable depictions of certain things in the film, I think dumbo had a lot more of an issue with the naming of a certain character that is totally in bad taste. Song of the south was a passion project of Walt’s and was done because of his admiration of the stories, if he just slapped a whole white cast for a story that originated in African folklore, I think that would have been more distasteful… it’s all a conversation and it would be nice for people to have it more without a muddied perception of it from Disneys current propaganda

      @@Balootoyoutoo Even with Dumbo I would have to disagree with here since much like with Song of the South, I've never had a single issue with what was depicted in Dumbo. Heck the crows there were the most memorable part of the original film because of their energy and that catchy song of theirs. Not to mention them having a point of being in the film to begin with. Maybe you could argue the same thing with Peter Pan with the Indians, but at the same time they still play a part in it instead of just being there or what have you.
      One thing's for certain though, the one thing both certain fans and Disney have in common is preventing people from having a more mutual conversation about more heavy subjects of this caliber. It's like dealing with Redditors when it comes to that sort of stuff.

    You would think in the era of digital movies you could request a 3D copy of those movies but no there is some economic politics going on about people hating on 3D because of what happened in 2011 of us promised Super Bowl in 3D that got retracted because of 2D incompatibility. After that, it became virtuous to attack 3D. People were willing to pay $200 more for a TV that was unable to be 3D than a TV that had 3D built in, exact same year,exact same brand, exact same size, exact same features other than 3D.

      @@reeceprime Yeah! I found this out while ripping the DVD to use for footage in an old video edit, and found this out because I'd only been watching the Blu-ray disc up into that point. They just repackaged an old release for the DVD disc in the pack, or at least used the same files and didn't bother to double check, lol.
      Not surprised, to be honest. Disney has always had a track record of dropping the ball on thier releases.
      For example, in 2007 ((and in the 2011 reissue)) Darkwing Duck's series release on DVD only had 54 episodes of the 91 episode series put out, completely ignoring the third season, put the episodes in airdate order instead of production order ((meaning that any continuity is completely shattered when, for example, QuackerJack makes three major appearances before his debut episode in this lineup)), and reused the menu system for Volume 1 as Volume 2's menu... And didn't even bother to change the episode numbers to reflect that, and even used footage that is slightly muddy in some episodes... And they have yet to re-release the series again in "full" unless you pay for Disney+, and even then, they changed the aspect ratio slightly and apparently pulled a few scenes and a whole episode. There are episodes that have never been properly released on home media in America uncut, and only outside of Disney's services through fans circulating the German release with English audio tracks as video files.
      Presumably, Disney has stuff in "The Vault" for the series, because they've released concept art sketches and special information a few years ago as an anniversary thing. Surely they have the entire series waiting to be rendered on a box set, it's been nearly 20 years since the last time...

Throughout the 90s, they released it on VHS and laserdisc in a good handful of European countries, as well as Japan and Hong Kong up until 2000 when Disney discontinued the movie altogether. However it has never been released in the US or has had a DVD release anywhere, but it has indeed escaped the vault, so anytime you see the movie pop up online or find any bootleg copy of the film, there’s a good chance it’s a rip from the UK VHS.

      Yes, although from what I understand those were all foreign releases. I have a bootleg copy and the movie isn't a very good one, the only thing about it that's good is the sound track and the quality of the way the animation was mixed with live action.
      But, really, the whole business of it being offensive is massively overstated when you compare it with other things that Disney will release, the Davy Crockett films in particular are incredibly offensive in their dealings with the various tribes he was involving himself with both in real life and in the movie.

  • @riot4jem
    @riot4jem Місяць тому

    It was really big in the late 80s and 90s with VHS cassette. It started with the Classics, then the Masterpiece Collection, before coming out on Disney DVD. I believe there is a deeper business reason for taking the movies off the market and then releasing them every seven years. That happens to correspond with the copyright ownership of a title and renewal of that title - so if they’re releasing that title every seven years, they can say they still have ownership of it. So the making kind of monopoly of it and prevent competition from bringing out major motion pictures with the same title, subject matter. I saw Song of the South in 1982, last time it was in the theaters and have an European release of it, I think it’s heartwarming. And I think it should be brought out with a warning of a time that it is depicting in American history.

    So they would re-release these films for the newest generation of young kids to enjoy and grow attached to before the movies would disappear again.
    Those kids would grow to be adults with nostalgic memories of the movies and have kids of their own...que Disney releasing the movies again for the new generation..rinse repeat.
    It was BRILLIANT marketing that they were able to do for decades until the medium evolved.
    Disney vaulting underperforming movies and shows from Disney plus doesn't lead to people clamouring to buy them on DVD or blu ray instead people move on to other shows/stream services or simply Pirate the shows.
    I watched the mighty ducks game changers on Disney plus but they stopped making new seasons and then removed the show altogether....so I downloaded it.....

Before they announce Plus I was collecting my childhood to show my niece and it was full of hours of extras, scans, etc... After Plus each release is missing more and more and Plus was the one to one backup in the beginning, now it's down to a trailer or two and maybe a behind the scenes compared to when I bought the Aladdin Blu-ray and it's digital format unlocked. All of that stuff is backed up perfectly on Plus but a Turning Red or Soul or Encanto is bare bones in comparison and this is in a time where everything is digital and only needs a flip of a switch to release more. Finally Blu-ray is the same thing nowadays, bare bones of it is available.

These releases are different from where disney offered the diamond edition blu ray in dvd packaging, these quite literally only had the dvd, and were more basic than the platinum releases. Disney Movie Insiders gave me a standalone dvd copy of sleeping beauty diamond edition, and I was so disappointed with it that I actually want to just buy the platinum edition.

    You completely skipped the television aspect. Because the classic movie The Wizard of Oz is a direct beneficiary of the Disney vault. When television was first starting to become a mainstream thing, they wanted to air movies on television. Specifically tv stations wanted to air Disney movies. But Walt Disney said no. They were still very profitable in the theaters, and if people were paying to see them, it didn't make any sense to give them away for free on television. So they aired _The Wizard of Oz_ instead. And thats how Oz became a classic film. Because believe it or not, Oz actually wasn't a big hit movie when it was released. It only became popular decades later through hundreds and thousands of TV airings of Oz throughout the last 70 years.

    I've watched Song of the South, it sucked and not for the reason you might think.
    The racist elements are pretty obvious to anyone who understands US history and even American history in general. Plus from what I understand even back then people were calling the film out. Staying away from such a whitewashing of history is one of the positive things Disney has done, but that's not saying much. There isn't much to say on that front because Song of the South is part of a larger issue with the legacy of racism in this country and people trying to rewrite history involving slavery.
    As a movie, Song of the South's real crime is being really a lazy, repetitive clip show of a movie. This is a oversimplification but you have a little white boy who meets Uncle Remus, white boy's dad is gone somewhere so Remus becomes like a father figure telling him Brer Rabbit stories. The animation and stories are lighthearted and cute and all but then little white boy then applies what he learned almost to the letter meaning that as the viewer, you're seeing the same events twice once animated and once live action.
    You can remove the racism out of the movie but it's hard to remove the boring out of this framing. Even if the movie was not trying to whitewash history and was super progressive, having the same thing happen multiple times like that with little else is not fun.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 2 місяці тому +2

      I think the racist elements get overstated, especially when you consider when it was made and what the other movies they are willing to release are.
      But, you're definitely right, it's a good movie in terms of being technically innovative and having great music, but the movie itself is pretty bad, and I think the fact that it's not a good movie is probably the real reason why it's locked in the vault forever when more racist movies like the Davy Crockett ones get an explanation at the start.

    • @mattwolf7698
      @mattwolf7698 2 місяці тому

      I don't like the movie but I don't really see it as racist. I see a lot of people saying it takes place during slavery, it does not, it takes place during reconstruction (apparently Disney was asked to specify that back in the day and they didn't which was really dumb on their part) at one point Uncle Remus was going to leave, he couldn't have even considered that if he was a slave.

    Having a copy of the Song of the South and having watched some of the stuff that is on Disney+, it's kind of a head scratcher as to why SotS is so offensive, when Davy Crockett is OK to be streamed now. Considering that most of the people taking issue with the movie are too young to have actually seen it, it seems kind of backwards minded and ignorant when the film itself is kind of a mixed bag. It's not something that I would personally support being made now without a lot of changes, but it was arguably kind of progressive in the sense that you had a major character being played by a black actor, the black characters do get one up on the white ones several times during the film and it was based in black culture of the South that probably wouldn't have received any sort of promotion to the rest of the country otherwise.
    The movie should be re-released so that we can at least make a decision based on the actual merits, or lack there of, rather than on what people were told about the movie based on having seen it decades earlier.

      I doubt it, Disney has, on the whole, been better about preserving their stuff than most other studios have been. It's why there are still film copies of most of those movies that are in good enough condition to affordably transfer multiple times for new digital media.
      It's a bit of a moot point as there are copies of the original theatrical films out there that have already been scanned to Blu Ray sizes, so there's probably more out there and allegedly, the movie is already public domain in some parts of the world.
