If pal/ftr could share vanguard and it scaled with combined levels, that would be 100% awesome.
Great build, thank you! Great dps and high survivability. Fun to play also!
One of your best and most enjoyable builds. Thank you for updating it!
Nice video got me to download and try it again. If I can get past the graphics and get deeper into the game
for sure gonna play this on my next life
This will be the build for me!
At level 5 with this build. Extremely enjoyable compared to most melee builds. Thanks for the recommendation!
Thanks for the build review. Question, for a person that runs almost exclusively in a party of 3, with few past lives, and does low to mid reaper. which would you suggest, the Vanguard Pally or a Bear druid?
I definitely prefer vanguard on a fighter vs. a paladin since the other paladin trees contain so much stuff that's desirable while stalwart defender is one i can manage without far more easily. There's also the ability to build really high tactical DCs much more easily which makes for a fun playstyle as well as the cool roleplaying thing of "I don't need divine aid, this is all my own skill!" :)
Remember when actively blocking with a shield you get a number of benefits; increased DR, AC, immunity to certain special attacks/abilities & if you have shield deflection, a flat % chance based on the shield type to completely negate elemental damage. You lose those benefits when making an active shield bash. Improved shield bash gives you an increased chance for making a secondary shield bash & lets you keep the benefits of actively blocking while making an active shield bash. However, there's an unlisted, possibly unintentional bonus feature - you count as actively blocking while making a secondary shield bash, which gives a very nice extra set of defenses while you're fighting - easy enough to see with your character sheet open while running through an attack chain & if using the upgraded PDK shield from haunted halls of eveningstar you'll see the orb bonus to saves & elemental resistances flicking on & off too.
hey Strimtom, great video! I do have a comment on the GoMF. I noticed you said you cannot craft on lev 32. You actually can, AND you keep your set bonuses when you use dust of disjunction. I have done with on all my GoMF for lev 32 gear. have you tried this?
Wouldn't the battle ax be better to use for this build? It would have the same threat range as a long sword but to multiplier on damage would be an additional one
Great vid Strim. Ty :)
A different ddo question: what do you think of the upcoming 33% nerf to all caster dps in r10?
My friends and i tend to play mostly endgame r10. What effect do you think this nerf will have on the endgame meta and general ddo experience?
Thnx again for a great vid :)
As someone who plays a bunch of R10s, you currently don't really need a tank or healer if you just bring druids, sorcerers and alchemists. It honestly feels like elite difficulty. So while I would rather they either target nerfed or made some more impact full changes like reducing aoe damage but retaining single target damage, I think these changes will overall be good for the game.
RIP to all the caster favored souls, clerics, dps wizards, and artificers. They didn't need 33% less damage (although dragonbreath still exists)
Now you can man up and play melee, the real fun
Truth. I love vanguards.
I like the fighter version. Many extra feats to have good tactic dc and defenses. Kensei capstone is better than vanguard and if you go battle axe you can also use throwing axes for ranged damage and still benefit from some kensei passive stuff while holding the shield, which is quite usfeul when soloing. With brutal throw, they do decent damage when you need to kill unreachable mobs or when you can kill monsters from a ledge. Also the stalwart tree with the extra 6 str for 3 p and enhancement for weapon and shield, plus knocback immunity is great.
Didn't realize that charisma to hit and damage doesn't affect shields. But I am curious on that note. Eldritch Accuracy specifically states shield bashes, and they recently made it so that shield bashes work with spellsword. I think a sword and board wizard/sorc sounds super cool, thoughts?
Also related, I wonder if it's just spellsword, or if other imbues work.
So that's actually the exception; sorcerer does get charisma to hit on shields. And bard can get charisma to damage in shields with different tack; the problem is that then you can't take the vanguard capstone, which is really good, AND bards can't be paladins. Sad.
So to answer the question fully, spellsword works on shields, and I played shield bash wizard recently and it was awesome :)
@@Strimtom Interesting, and cool is there anywhere I can see this? I didn't really see any videos on your channel here talking about it.
Hey Strim, do you think a dex Swashbuckler Vanguard combo could would work well, or are tower shields on a fighter just way better in general? Recently picked up a Guardbreaking buckler and was thinking the dazing could be great crowd control.
Guardbreaking effect feels really good. Don't know about the vanguard combo, but you can have evasion with a buckler and swash. So I'd go dex build, mostly swash with a splash of ftr.
I've got fighter levels on a couple of swashbucklers (one is 17bard/3fighter the other 13bard/5barb/2fighter) to make use of vanguard, just grabbing a couple of the low hanging fruits - missile shield & stunning shield & can confirm that it definitely works nicely, though naturally it's a trade-off vs. the top end swashbucker cores it adds some extra damage & defensive benefits.
Guardbreaking on a buckler adds that effect to your mainhand attacks but yeeh it's definitely worth making sure you have that on the buckler for the crowd control - a shadarkai swashbuckler is very strong against groups thanks to that & it's chain attacks, especially if you're using the legendary goldcurse dagger too.
5 lvls of wizard, 1 ranger, 14 fighter bastard sword or Dwarven war ax EK Vangard, and any race that has bonus sneak damage. I actually am reluctant to share it. ED Crusader 100% shield proc. The DPS is good, the defense is decent, the self-healing is decent the imbue is good.
Strim, i play a dwarf vanguard with dwarf axe THF. What do you think of war hammer vs battle axe with knight’s training? Also, should a fighter vanguard not use divine crusader since no religion feats like pally?
Divine crusader is fine for fighter.
War hammer vs battle axe is preference more than anything else. Pick whatever you think is cooler.
Throwing Legendary Coronation Shield in the discussion on shields.
Does weapon focus really worth a feat? I mean, +1 to hit and 2 melee power for a feat, it sounds poor... I only go for weapon focus on fighter, because the whole chain worths it...
I am a returning player to DDO and I think I am going to make this build. Do you have an order or enhancement skill order recommendations?
Also had this question
I always wanted to play prot paladin in wow, but as DPS, but nooo if you do that you get kicked out of dungeon group or you are forced to do tanking if tank leaves the group
how d you get this secondary shield bash chance? what skill, feat, or enhancement activates it?
It's in the vanguard tree, on certain shields, the feat improved shield bash, in divine crusader, and can be found on randomly generated gloves/cannith crafted gloves. It's also technically in the eldritch knight tree as well.
is there a good amount a people playing that this game is worth playing? also why the hell is every mmo i find 20 years old!?!
Haste isn't an issue, that's what pots/ scroll are for.
You must be either new entirely or new to melee! I’m going to correct you here so in case someone that is new reads you’re comment don’t get the wrong idea! Those pots and scrolls mean absolutely nothing bye lvl 25 you should be perma hasted either through gear or feats! You are doing you’re self and everyone els in the group a a disservice bye not taking haste boost! Reason being is it stacks with -all- alacrity so you should be spamming it off CD for the 30% boost! Even tank spec I would take this just to hold hate. But as a vanguard you get a 15% comp bonus to alacrity that also stacks with both haste and haste boost! This guy knows he F up bye not taking haste boost!
@@shade6405I don't need correcting, its MY opinion.
I'm hardly new, but your partially correct, I primarily play casters since melee is for people that lack finesse.
@@willpower8061 you do need correcting because what you say isn’t even viable! Like who drinks 30 second haste pots after lvl 20? Or even more so scrolls haste in heroics? Even if you did that haste boost still stacks with that! Lol that’s how dumb you are! Lmao
Hello Strim. For a newbie who has never played DDO. Which build and class would you recommend?
If Strimtom doesn't see this, mostly I've seen tempest ranger as the best newbie build - but I loved playing Paladins on old D&D so I actually created one of these (Vanguard) as my first toon
guys thanks for the advice!
Cleric. Easy to build, forgiving mistakes in build, useful for grouping, and gives you time to stay behind and see how it works (I mean DDO). It is not me, it is the best advice I had since 2010. First life, first time - play cleric. Also, you can play high reaper with people, who would be glad to have you on reaper difficulties. I went reaper 7 on my cleric's first life and was quite able healer.
Honestly? Strength based Vanguard Paladin is a VERY solid choice for an intro character
Barbarian because it's hard to mess up a barbarian lol
Question. You take Follower of Onatar, but you're using a Longsword. Is that intentional? Sorry if you explained it, as I'm slightly drunk right now.
Onatar is for the damage ability at level 6, and you get longsword as favoured from knight of the chalice.
@@Strimtom Gotcha', thanks.
Back to drinking. I might have a problem.
The problem is I'm not drinking at this point.
Im currently on paladin lives, I went SWF do you think dps of this build is better?
No, swf is better dps for sure.
Hey strimtom, why do you take the ontar feat?
It gives damage when you activate it, and this build is primarily a damage build.
I just thoroughly analyzed my gear, and the legendary family legendary mists titanius glory would be best
Am new yo DDO and find your build BUT am on first life, Is okay if I run It like you have in the forum description?, I can see no racial skill tree options .
I didn't put points into the racial tree so you could pick whatever race you wanted.
@@Strimtom thanks, am currently playing a Dragonborn but am not sure as I dont want to mess with the build
Why not take the Enforcers plate for better defenses vs the Coat?
Because I like having 8 more dodge vs the extra prr.
Why 2 main stats? Why not all weapon hit's and damage from charizma? Familiar's Flourish I + Familiar's Flourish II is only 7 APs...
As I say in the vidoe, shields can't use charisma to hit and damage. Familiar's Flourish doesn't effect shields sadly.
@@Strimtom Understand thanks.
Shield tackle.
Soooo... Captain America build when?! XD
That's Path of Exile. :P
@@Spectre06Gaming Yes but this is DDO, why not see if it is possible and fun?! XD

It's ok for leveling, but ultimately no haste boost - no dps. Fighter gets it in kensei tree. Since you have to be str based, fighter gets more str, and better tactics DCs. Like you said, second wind is better than loh, and requires no ap investment; you don't even have spare points to take extra loh from defender tree. The only real advantage a paladin has, are much better saves. Dps paladin is at the bottom and I wish someone with a platform like yours would be more vocal about it.
I play the game for fun, not for trying to be #1 dps. Paladin works fine in R10 and reaper raids, so while it's not the best, it's not bad either. So using my platform that I have, I am vocal that I have fun with paladin which is very viable.
I also mentioned I think that fighter is better in the video, so I'm not entirely sure what I can help with here.
I'm liking it better myself. I wanted to be a melee glass cannon i'd THF a barb. The survivability on vanguard makes it easy mode with fine kill capability.
The Saltmarsh set is significantly subpar on AC, but your not pushing AC so it's probably irrelevant.
