Just the day after you got introduced to Punjabi music… one of the legends of Sidhu Moosewala passed away at 28. His influence to Punjabi and Indian Hip-Hop was as revolutionary as Tupac to the west. If I could make a suggestion you should do a podcast just reacting to his music as a tribute. Man was a genius.

Imran Khan was a good lyricist before he got his own record label. Then there was no one to control his worst impulses. His earlier songs "Amplifier", "Bewafa", and "Ni Nachle" are what made him popular. And "Pata Chalgea", my personal favorite is a little bit slept on.

I live in Punjab, and I agree with most of his commentary. Punjab has seen Terrorism, Drugs, yadda yadda... and a lot is true for everywhere, like disease, what are parents suffered in their 50s and 60s have now started happening to young men and women, take BP, Diabetes etc. Fast food, obesity, you name it, universal problems, I guess, but as he is born and lives in Punjab, he sees it through the lens of his life.
Also, Bhagat Singh is a revered figure in India and especially in Punjab; he was a revolutionary Freedom Fighter. So Gurdaas Maan is saying, where are the ideals of Bhagat Singh? Then everyone thought that the end of colonial rule would be happiness and prosperity, but look what we've done to ourselves, our youth, and our children.

Punjab has a history of horrible violence, massacres, genocide, etc. The culture has hence developed to the confrontational tones of poems and music with an undertone of celebratory music. if u meet a Punjabi they are generally joyful people. The Punjabi society currently has a huge drug, gun extremism, and terrorism problem. (drugs from Afghanistan via Pakistan ) you will always find a happy tone in Punjabi music.
Punjab is very traditional as well as very modern at the same time. the migrated community brings western values, so the friction is obvious to happen.

That was a fun listen. It would be great to have a part two exploring the more traditional style of punjabi music - lyrically and musically there is a vast range, it's not all hip hop beats and dance tracks 😉
Do try Reshma, a legendary voice and incredibly unique. Her 'haye o rabba' is magical. She sadly passed away some years ago.
Satinder Sartaaj is a master of the Punjabi language - 'udaariyan' is a lovely song but he has a vast catalogue of music, from folk to ballads to spiritual.
Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan also sang many punjabi songs and qawallis. His 'sun charke di' and 'kinna sona' are timeless classics. There's been no one quite like him since his untimely death. (Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is his nephew)
It's also worth looking up live renditions of 'Heer Ranjha' - one of the great Punjabi epic poems (bit like Romeo and Juliet). There's a great version by a lady called Hina Nasarullah.
The above list is a mix of Pakistani Punjabi and Indian Punjabi voices...the land used to be one and we're still very connected by our musical heritage albeit physically separated.
