Sanchez was a very highly praised prospect and was on his way to bigger and better things. Mickey just held on, waited for his moment and struck while the iron was red hot. That fight with Sanchez may not be exciting to watch, but it’s one of the best fights I have ever seen. It’s the whole thing. The fucked up commentary, the uphill battle Mick fought the entire time, his corner time, the ref warning him, and of course the finale. I wish I would’ve saw that fight live or even watched it on HBO as it aired. Then they tried a similar tactic with Neary here. I’m not sure what they were thinking.

I was at this fight, Naz was the reason why everyone was there, me and mate walked to our seats at the 2nd/3rd round of this fight as we were in the pub around the corner and we couldn’t believe what we arrived to see, we didn’t take our seats for the whole fight, stood at the steps watching this balls to the wall great fight. The only complaint I have with THE FIGHTER is how it portrays this fight. It was a much better fight than the movie shows. It makes it look like Ward was getting beat down the whole fight until the end, which clearly is not the case.
This fight set up his classic trilogy with Arturo Gatti, where Mickey could start to make the first real money of his career (at the end) because Gatti-Ward I was so brilliant and they were in such demand. In my opinion there's few who deserved it more. Years of paying his dues because he was fighting with an injured hand then never fully healed. I highly recommend Micky's memoir "A Warrior's Heart". It provides MUCH more insight into his life and career than the film. And he needs to do a 2nd book! It ends right after this fight. The Gatti-Ward trilogy and aftermath is riveting as well.

I remember Mickey was almost stagnant prior to this thunder run through the ranks he made late in his career and this led to a beautiful trilogy with Thunder Arturo Gatti which I miss very much fights don't have the same energy as these masterpieces from the 1980s and 1990s into the early 2000's like Fernando Vargas and de lahoya and Tito Trinidad they just ain't the same as these old fights idk I think the fighters just don't have the Charisma as they used to

I know it's hard to fit every aspect of a person's life story into a biopic, but it's funny how The Fighter glossed over Ward's losses to Vince Phillips and Zab Judah. Instead it suggested that the victory over Alfonso Sanchez (1997) immediately lead to the fight versus Neary (2000).
Mickey always had a hell of beard. His heart unquestionably. Neary was the slightly smaller man. That appears to be the difference in the fight Neary really never recovered from this fight . He came conquered and left. Lost a close fight to Einon Magee . Had the sence to retire. Host one to Neary !

I know many fighters under estimated Mickeys body shot power but those hard short hooks to the body could move houses
