I think a lower profile design (lower center of gravity) would make it a lot safer as well as a full cage around the prop
Yea, plus quad (4) points of contact would be more stable and also increase the ground clearance of the cross members. I’d want that fan caged too.

He could achieve a lot more stability just by moving two sleds up front and keeping a single in the back without the directional rail. There's an easy 8 to 12 inches to lower the center of gravity. I'm guessing he initially welded on some the length to the fork just to make sure he had enough prop clearance. He did hack it all together in a few hours after all.
And a cage is the first priority. I was cringing when I saw him start the motor with his pup around. It's all good that he knows his dog and has a well behaved boy, but I'm also glad a neighbors dog didn't get loose and go chasing him down the street or something🤣
You would typically ride a snowboard just on its edge. With the whole surface area planted flat on the snow, you're either getting too much 'grip' in powder, or it gets very unstable at speed, since it constantly switches from one edge to another. You may want to mount the rear snowboards at an angle to try it out. Not sure how much do you want to over-engineer it, but it probably would make a lot of sense to build some kind of a suspension that would pivot the boards while cornering. That would require you to lean on it to turn, but may be a lot of fun too!

I thought about using his Engine to rebuild my VJ-24w, which I pranged in 1992 ; but it started life designed to be a footlaunched Hang Glider, and it shook like a shower of Shit with the 22 Hp JPX Pul-425 on it - and I fear the 35 Hp Rotax might shake the very Rivets out of their holes, scattering parts from on high.

Suspension in the rear is the last thing you want, that's coming from a guy who has years of three wheeler experience. Cornering on a three-wheel/three ski machine is all body position.

Widen the stance by a foot or 2 and add a few degrees camber so the inside edges of the boards cut in a little bit
I would like to see a more "complete version" of this concept. Like putting fins on the back after fully enclosing the prop in a cage. In theory the handling should become much smoother. Also a vibration damper between the prop and the engine output would probably help heaps! Other then that id say great video!

Peter hasn't changed much, but FT went through a "modern" UA-cam phase, and lost a lot of credibility. Though it feels like Josh is trying to take FT back towards its roots now.

If you lengthen the frame (more distance between the motor and driver) it will keep the motor from tipping the whole thing, and probably have better handling. You aren't getting enough weight toward the front.

For the record, it might not be a good idea lol. You'd seriously suffer from lacking surface area and weight, and unless you've swapped in a seriously overfed motor, you might get some trouble plowing through some snows. Also, getting nailed by the wash from other vehicles or a snowplow, or even just getting dunked by snow drifting off the roofs of other vehicles could ruin you.
I imagine that a proper snowped would require some serious modding and still get you into trouble.
Chains would handle it no problem. Chains are genuinely unbelievable in the snow

@@davesendit1348 yeah, but mopeds kinda have a few additional issues. Small wheels means you have to use small chains, otherwise they're just going to keep bumping you up into some potentially disastrous air-time. And if you run small chains then you might not get enough traction on certain kinds of snow.
Lighter weight means both less traction on ice and after a certain speed you'll start floating too much on snow. In addition, a small engine means you'll be suffering while trying to plow through fresh snow.
When traversing through snow, you want one of two things. Either you're light enough with a large enough surface area to stay on top of the snow, or you're heavy enough with a strong enough engine to plough through and compact the snow beneath you to give you more solid footing.
If you can't manage those then you're just stuck with well maintained roads...which isn't at all safe because you'll be sharing those roads with vehicles who'll ruin you just by being near you.
Love the crazy fun and would love to see the snow bike make another appearance. A few things, it looked like you put the ribs on with blunt leading edges, get out the grinder… and for a bit more stability increase the stance of the rear skis. But you already know all that…
Very nice garage fabricating, I wish more young people would be involved in this sort of thing and actually lean stuff. Beyond the mechanical skills there is plenty of crude engineering. Well done.
Got some ideas for improving stability: make it a bit longer so the weight is more central and less over the rear "axle". Also it might help if you angle the back skiis inwards a little so they ride on the inner edge when going straight but let the craft tip slightly outwards whilst still being controlable when cornering. Lastly the horizontal bar connecting the rear sleds seams like it would probably destroy your feet when you touch the ground. Oh, and a break could benefit security.

You want the center of mass even farther away from the two boards keeping it from tipping anytime they try to turn?
the problem is there's no guiding blades on the flat snowboards, without those you wont have much steering authority at all. the way snowboarders steer is by leaning the snowboard to the side to get the edge of the board to cut into the snow much like a snowmobile ski or an ice skate on ice
A break is often beneficial for safety, but I think you mean brake.

Sweet snow trike Peter, I always like these kinds of builds! A few thoughts on design:
1. Some dihedral on the outriggers should help the outboard ski dig its edge in on a turn and track better;
2. Some mechanical expo in the steering might help the squirrely handling at high speed;
3. Lower the CG, but you already knew that;
4. Better cage on the prop to make it less death-trappy. I don't want to see you get hurt my dude!
3. Lower the CG. Most important. A bicycle leans in turns. The bicycle frame used for this build sets the rider too high

@@SvrM_ Sure. The suspension provides some form of leaning which acts somehow like lowering the centre of gravity. The most effective way to lower the CG, however, is to physically lower the load. Maybe a combination of suspension and a lower ride height would be the best, and also make for a more comfortable ride

With that harbor freight engine, in regards to it's power, I would reccomend some kind of gearbox/chain setup to increase the RPM of the propeller. Those engines have decent torque that can't be utilized by a propeller at 1:1 ratio.

Great contraption! I love the paint job. I might stretch the wheelbase(?) and triagulate the rear struts with a little more angle, but alas we just don't get that much snow here in NC....
Beautiful build. I built a small airboat back in the 80's and made a conduit frame around the prop and used fencing wire twisted around (not welded so vibrations won't break) the frame to protect limbs from meeting with the prop in case of an accident.
Amazing concept. It would sure be fun to ride on it!

This is awesome! I recently built an air powered tricycle with a harbor freight electric chainsaw motor. My original plan was to add skis to the bottom like yours, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Great work!

I'd suggest lowering your centre of mass somehow and only having the metal guide on the front board so the back will slide instead of getting caught and jumping.

It needs a strip on both sides of the front ski. The steering geometry lifts the single strip off the snow.

Interesting! I've buiIt several small R/C power sleds with both glow & electric power over the years. I would suggest mounting the nose ski with 3/5ths of the ski ahead of the hinge point; and a bungee+cable to keep the nose of the skis up and limit their travel, especially in deeper, powder snow. Also another 12" or so of width between the main skis would be more stable.
I gave you the idea a couple of years ago and sent a link to some cheap gravity sleds already on the market. Reversing the order of skis by placing two in front and one behind will increase stability. At the same time widen the front stance by about a foot. Fixing the front skis in place and using a shorter rear ski to steer (in the manner of a taildragger airplane) might be worth looking into.
Using a single rear ski to stir with two fixed in the front wouldn't work. The 2 front skis moving in conjunction with a rudder at the fan would be better for stirring.

Stability might come with greater width and length. The steering 'trail' length is very important to look into for the intended speed.

not bad. if you build a duct for the prop, you will get better performance. widen the footprint and you will get better stability at higher speed. I built one similar a few years ago with a top speed of 65 mph. here is a suggestion for a future build use four of those engines and build a quad copter bike. you will have to set up special controls to synchronize the engines for Beter directional control.

One of the easier changes for improving stability at high power, is to angle the engine slightly (5 to 10 degrees), to give a little down force.

@@calebvaccaro Extra down force requires the imaginary extension of the propeller shaft to intersect the ground somewhere ahead of the rider.
If you combine the form of the first (a low sled) with the outriggers/tripod of the first (two running gear in the front, one rear for better stability) you'll also get the lower centre of gravity so you're less likely to tip over.

Pedal powered machines are notoriously hard to power, but what if you made a glider out of one. You'd only have to pedal to extend your glide range theoretically?
Living here in SW Florida, all I can think of is the configuration of an airboat. After seeing your ski bike in action I'm thinking it might benefit from some steering rudders behind the prop, similar to an airboat design. Maybe a wider "ski-base" to stop it from squirreling, other than that it looks like a blast to drive! Just watch your hands and feet, well, and arms, legs and neck, yeah, a full safety cage for that prop might help too!

Fun project. When it's cold enough to snow perhaps a fan isn't the most comfy propulsion unit.
The skis need to tilt to steer. The edges define the turn radius. That’s how snow boards work.
2 sleds front, 1 back, recumbent for low center of mass and clear path to propeller. Low down friction and mass - high up thrust causes safer, grippier nose down turning moment. If you could combine (safely ratio'd) steering the front with your feet, and the back with a wheel/handlebar, this could roll the driver, help keep both front sleds flat down and ease off side slip on the back, and be a lot more intuitive to balance.

Agree that lower COG would improve stability, but so would spreading those rear skids out.
Pretty cool…next winter a go-cart with wide sled base and prop cage… then haul-ass!
Wider base, much lower center of gravity, possibly spring suspension and get rid of the pedals. Instead, have a platform with a seat, a foot at most above the ground. A "stomp pedal" you can use to apply brakes (a hinge at the aft end of the 2 rear skies to push a brake into the snow). Your air-sled had the right idea, being so low.
If you'd cut down the front ski to be more narrow it would enhance your steering.
And last, but MOST important, you need a full shroud around that propeller, but for your safety and to protect the prop should you tip over.

Lower your seating position.
Lower center of gravity= increased stability.
Also 30 mph will feel super fast.
3 skis is unstable in any order, go with four. In a corner youll have a chance to recover from a tip. With a low cog, though youll be golden.
4 skiis.
V-twin power is better suited to this sort of application because the torsional vibration applied to the prop is less severe. The torsional vibration of that one-cylinder, HF piece of cr*p engine is likely what caused the prop bolts to shear.
You need a full cage around that prop. Even better is a duct, which will improve prop efficiency, as well as minimize the chance of a prop strike if you roll your contraption on its side.
That was fun to watch! I wish I had a chance to ride it. :D It's good you're careful not to push it too hard; don't lose that. I hope nothing ever catches you out.
Lil hint for the bike side of your project: you can pull off one of the cranks an put it back in place parallel to the other side crank. Than you could just weld them in place to have solid footstays. 👌🏼
Maybe also make it electric so time 😋
Recommendation: Take the snowboards you are using and get the bottoms waxed by a local ski shop. It will help tremendously with starting from a standstill and potentially top speed.
Just a couple suggestions, add a shock to the front. And lower the center of gravity. You're riding way too high. Lowering,that will increase your stability.
Sick paint job.
I think that the instability comes form the boards being rigidly mounted flat from left to right. If they were set at a slight angle, like a dihedral wing, it would help the rear track straight and be more stable in turns. The front already tilts the board when you turn so the side catches which is why it can steer. More advanced version would have linkages that tilt the whole vehicle to lean it proportionally to the handle bar motion. That way you lean into the turn along with the snow boards so you can slide or turn tighter without flipping.

Two snowboards in the front and a saucer sled in the rear would drastically improve stability and definitely a lower center of gravity. Cheap fix just my opinion. By the way thanks for the content keep it coming!

Add skegs to the bottom of the skis and make the brackets for the rear skis so they can pivot and you’d be golden!
I think some points worth considering for this project:
1: You don't have any shock absorption or give on your skis. Putting the front or rear skis on pivots may help in the handling. Likewise leaf springs or coil springs like on a dirt bike make make for a more stable ride, as the dampening effect will take some of the sway and wobble out at higher speeds.
2: You're pretty high off the ground in your current configuration. Not only will that make it feel more dangerous, but it will increase you risk of being ditched over the handle bars if you hit a rock or other obstacle. If you look at historical ski cars driven by props, the prop is usually pretty high relative to the rest of the vehicle body. A canoe shape or toboggan shape seated position may helpful not only in lowering your center of gravity, but also in distributing the centroid of your mass, making it easy to handle at high speeds. While you did use a sled in your earlier version, I think the poor handling of that mode is pretty evident.
3: You prop cage should probably extend a little farther back, like most prop boats.
4: Skis: You used snowboards for your skis and I think that probably wasn't the worth idea, as they spread your weight over a larger area, which should in theory reduce your resistance. But Snowboards don't have the best handling when traveling straight as you have observed. I'm curious if the narrower skis would keep your ski car running more true. Likewise, there may be some value in looking at the curve profile of the actual first surface, as that will affect how straight running the skis are.
5: Steering: using a snowboard for the front ski makes a lot of sense here as snowboards handle better off axis movement than conventional skis. I wonder if your high speed handling may be helped by some kind of limits to prevent too wide a turn at high speeds, which could cause damage or injury. Otherwise some kind of dampening with hydraulics or shocks may improve high speed steerings.
Overall a fun project; definitely curious how fast that paramotor will be able to go, on a safer frame.
If youre going to use a three contact point ski system then put the single point in the back and move the cg forward towards the TWO front skis. You could also sit lower helping out in every respect.
You should probably be using Snowmobile skags (wear bars) on the ski's for better steering and stability. but don't try to turn too fast or sharp.
Also, instead of having a snowboard at the front you should use 1 or 2 skis. For the stability issue, you need some type of suspension. The reason why its so jerky is that all the knocks and vibrations are being transferred directly to the frame of the bike. Since your steering is (directly with no suspension unit) connected to the frame all those vibrations will affect the steering.
Great job as usual! Always waxing on the innovative. That said, have you considered swapping the skis around. 2 in front and 1 in back likely be hugely more stable.
Need to make it where you have two boards in the front and one or two in the back . Like a recumbent bike set up . Get the CG as far down as you can .
Next version need to be longer with a lower rider height. Maybe some sort of braking system that drops lowers a block or small plow between the two rear ski's that is operated by the other brake lever or the bike peddles similar to coaster bikes for kids
Try with the stabilizing strip only on the front ski, that way instead of tipping the rear will just slide and you can compensate with the steering.
Try a little toe in on the rear skis. Also some caster and trail in the front ski. This should make it turn better. Another idea would be to take in on the lake this summer. You can try to skip it across the water.

You need a longer wheel base to go fast. Think of a power boat. You need to distance between the front and back to keep it in line. Also your center if gravity is extremely high. So it's basically like riding a barstool down the road a 30mph. Very unstable. Move the seat down and bend the front forks down bring your center down. Cool project
To not flip over, you could reduce the drag straps on the back 2 snowboards, this will also improve the steering angle
I would be tempted to make it an all-board steering system. as the main thrust is at the back it may be worth making those boards turn a little with turning movement of the front board. Or have a second turning board directly under the rider for less drifting.
Oh you gotta try it with two skis in the front and one in the back, steering from either the 2 in front or from the one in the back. Think it could increase the speed imensely!
I'm picturing some kind of prone lying sled type of approach.. it's all about wind resistance and keeping the center of gravity low.. angle up at the head a little bit for visibility sake

Putting a wing/ spoiler for more drag / lift might be a good idea , also more surface area on ground so less/no risk of rollover

To fix the stability issues at speed, maybe try reversing the trike setup. Two sleds in front, one in rear. That’ll at least eliminate centripetal force sending you in an unsupported area of the frame. Downside is: then you have to figure out how to keep the engine and prop from unbalancing the rear.

Widen the stance to at least as wide as is tall for stability. If you can find a frozen lake this thing would absolutely rocket along. You may need a little nose down aero to keep it from taking off at higher speeds.
