We return with a critical update on a situation that has resonated with many of our viewers. Previously, we uncovered the perilous work of a balcony and pergola constructed by a dubious contractor for a single mum. Our findings were alarming - the construction was not only non-compliant but dangerously illegal. After ringing the alarm bells and getting the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) involved, we have now revisited the site to bring you the latest developments.
Join us as we re-inspect the property to evaluate the actions taken and provide crucial awareness for those embarking on their building or renovation journeys. It's a story of negligence, a fight for justice, and a community coming together to right a wrong. Watch to see the turn of events in this ongoing battle for safety and accountability.

Lol😂
Once again dressed like a tool
I’ve heard that on videos from a man who blows up massive rocks that are in the way of building work. You probably know that tho’
I have a mate in Victoria who is in his industry and he told me it already started. Everybody wants zeher to inspect their properties and because of this - the entire process along with the system has slowed right down. This is just the beginning. I think he needs to form squads or teams that replicate him to get out and cover large numbers of properties. Marshalla brother
Yes.
Too many concurring reports of non-compliance may rock the system 🤣
@bigredranga69 im guessing he not to popular with the builders down there, your comment is spot on though, there are politicians and the like in high places that want these houses built quickly, money and jobs are on the line, they don't want delays and now that he is known these builder's will make it real hard for him to be able to inspect the site
So what will come of his reports? The "legal system" has already been captured.

As a carpenter - these videos are fantastic. It forces shit carpenters to improve, gets rid of the cowboys and makes me proud of the work me and my crew do

Not wrong mate, i love these videos. It shows the general public what your really getting when you settle on the cheapest quote. I get countless message from clients saying they got a quote from someone else and it was nearly half my price, only to get a call 6 months later to come fix up there work because they paid a handyman cash and they have no warranty and he did a shit job
Was recently testing & commissioning the electrical install on a large infrastructure project. To 'spread the money' in the community some minor install jobs were given to local electrical contractors. Was sent to inspect two switchboards prior to energisation. I was disgusted by the work & called the contractor to come to site to explain. I expected him to be shocked by the poor quality of the work his electricians had done. Then he told me he'd done it himself! And he tried to defend it.
Cost him an extra two days out of his own pocket to come back and fix the switchboards, which was still well below our expected standards of work, but 'safe' electrically.
You expected the electrical contractor to be "shocked", eh....?
Sorry, I had to do that
The bloke reckons he was in touch with his lawyer, if the lawyer came and had a look

Yea couldn’t even put a Kia picanto on that mess lol
You could drive a car on it - assuming the transmission worked - though he didn’t claim it would hold. You can drive a car on anything! You know, assuming the car actually runs.

This is my old family home. Lived there for 35 years and mum sold in 2022. It’s absolutely insane to think that the home owner didn’t know she needed a permit for the car port and deck as we saw it go up within a month or two of buying the house.
Honest opinion is she knew the council regulations, wanted a quick cheap job and to avoid permits, then the builder has done a shocking job, now she is angry about it. Could be wrong but that’s how it appears to me
She probably expected the builder to sort everything

The VBA are hopeless and have done similar to myself and The person who signed a certificate was not the person who did the job and claimed it was a sub contractor working for said builder corruption runs deep in Victoria unfortunately.
Absolutely did due diligence, checked trade on VBA; subbies, apprentice on site.
Build inspection and surveyor equally as dodgy, most are plasterers, one was a pool inspector!
It quite prevalent in these videos.
Sad and disgusting. It's not a place to build a home.
Not these days anyway.
Yeah, sub contracting can be awful USA side too. My sister had to get a licensed general contractor due to wanting to alter a business space many years back. The laws would not allow them to do it themselves even though they know how to and could do it quickly. We understood the reason for the rule and normally would be fine with it, but the only one available locally in the remote town did okay work, but was super duper slow. A two day project was dragged out to months due to "never having time" to come out. They also sub contracted the plumbing out. Now that person was a nightmare! Literally used duct tape to hold pipes together! My brother-in-law went to check the work on day two and promptly fired the both of them. My sister and brother-in-law had to rezone the place to residential and then do the work themselves. Then they rezoned to commercial and had it inspected, which of course it passed with flying colors. The whole incident left a bad taste in the mouth though, and they sold the place shortly afterwards. After all, if any work needed to be done in the future they would be right back to where they started. There needs to be stricter oversight with these scammers. It hurts both those wanting work done and those competent contractors willing to do the work. That town could have had a decent worker instead of that scam artist and layabout.
I've been in the industry all my life, from design to construction. The sad thing is regulations and penalties don't mean anything to "builders" who don't intend to comply.
I saw some things also, like the size of the rafters in the roof on the deck. Looking at the span and spacings, they would be well undersized. I'm sure the roof would lack rigidity, and movement through constant wind loads will soon cause a failure of fixings.
Your a good guy to bring these videos to the attention of the public. I have felt for years that not enough educating of the general public is done.
Cash is king.
Yep. That roof had better NOT get a load of ice from a hail storm on it.
there's absolutely nothing holding the rear of the deck to the house walls, just a couple of bolts on a post
Where's the main bearer or support posts at the house wall to support the deck?
Where's the posts in the middle to take 'load'
I've seen the results of bearers ripping away from the wall because dyna bolts were used instead of proper fixings' 15 people fell, a couple died, many broken bones, and lacerations. No notice. One moment a group of mum's were talking, then bang, the whole deck collapsed
the builder claimed bankruptcy and ran away, maybe he built this one?
There's been too many deck collapses in the past ten years
How fortunate this lady and her family and friends never walked on this one. There'd definitely be a body count

Spot on. Like all govt regulations, the red tape makes it hard on honest operators, but the dodgy ones just ignore it... and never seem to get caught.
I'm a retired bricky and if I was near her I'd give her a hand. The materials can all be reused (as long as it is compliant for outdoor use etc) the steel posts, decking, beams/joists etc can be reused. Pour some new concrete and do the job properly and legally.
That is a really k8nd gesture.
Yea this is actually fixable. I do alot of fix up jobs. Acro props and new footings.

We do steel work out of Heidelberg. I assuming the columns will be re used. Not sure if there would be any other steel work but I could talk to the boss and see what he thinks if you believe we could help.
I can't believe he specified the cleats on the outside of the deck perimeter when ordering. The guy has no idea.
Start a building company, get 20 contracts pre paid, put all that cash into a trust, liquidate, claim bankruptcy, restart new business under another family member & repeat cycle
How do they get away with this, the builder belongs in prison
This "builder" needs to be investigated, How many other death traps has he built. There's no point finding out after it fails.
He is not a builder, might just advertise himself as a handyman.
Thats just it, he not a builder.
He a cowboy.
That is the poorest piece of regulatory investigation and enforcement imaginable! The "regulator" accepted an excuse that is basically: 'I intentionally did work that I knew was in breach of the codes, standards, and regulations because the client unknowingly asked me to do that by requesting a cheap job'.
Cheap or not, and whether she wanted him to do the job or not it was his responsibility not to accept the job and do it
Either way cheap or not.
He took the job on, he wasn't forced.
He should have did the job to the standard regulations that are in place.
Despite the rising price of building supplies, I'm pretty sure the materials used in this project don't even come close to $40,000. Sure there are labor costs, but this looks like it was slapped together in a day or two.
"That poor dog. Is so upset" pans to the happiest pup I've ever seen 😂

How many times must it be said to never pay any tradie up-front full amount. This is an immediate red-flag sign not to go ahead. Every good tradie has told me this as a tip as well...
You often need to pay up front for materials. In this case, after the knockdown, most of the timber can be reused.
I run a construction crew and i send the cliebt to pay for the materials straight away by sending them the invoice but after that i just get partial payments. I tell people never pay by the hour either. I also only do jobs for good people to avoid me getting fucked over too.

Where are the rest of the posts?
Where is the main support bearer for the rear of the deck?
How did that deck not fall down on the dudes head when he was building it?
The building industry is shot and broken. Anyone building new or renovating, needs to really think twice, especially in victoria where people have suddenly been left with bits n pieces of houses that will, most likely, never be finished, and, in the worse cases, their land was never theirs and their money is gone
There used to rules to look after the home owners and customers, then labor got in and fkd everyone over
As long as you paid the council and the government agencies and inspectors, anything goes
Unfortunately, Australia used to be a country that took great pride in it's building and construction industry and it's manufacturing, well, bit by bit, each government has relaxed the bylaws so far, you'd probably have to go to Bali to find them.
then they handed out licenses to 'new immigrants' to 'help them get started' and some, or a lot of aussies jumped on the bandwagon to get 'their fair share of the 'rorts and torts' and , this is what the building industry has become
The last time I saw decent, honest construction in the domestic market, was pre 2010.
She should be sued charged and jailed
I had an electrician once disconnect the MAINS power feeding into a building, so that the old, 1950's wiring could be removed to make way for renovations etc. We started cutting out the old wires, when I saw amongst the jumble a thicker gauge wire.........and that got me thinking that something was not right. We had been told the wires were safe to remove.....but acting on a hunch, I followed the wire and it went out the wall and straight out to the main line on the power pole in the street, still very much intact and alive.
and... what's that got to do with this?

The 'builder' admitted that they did a 'cheap job' - so they don't deny it is their work. Should be a simple one for the courts to decide on - unless they come to some form of settlement.
It's possible to reuse some of those materials, the decking, the posts, although more will be needed, the roofing-again more will be needed, i don't know about all that timber under the deck, the builds I've worked on, the timbers were thicker/or at least, appear to be thicker than these. There's a lot of support material missing.
It definitely needs to be very carefully dis assembled, lots of accy props, yeah.
That siren is the CFA Fire Alarm, used to alert volunteers they are required to attend the fire station.
Most members have pagers, but the siren is also a great way to alert the community to be vigilant, as there is potential hazards.
The builder counted how many bolts he saved up at the end of the day and he was happy loll this is so dangerous the builder is crazy
The exterior cladding on the outside of the original building, appears to be asbestos based too. Oh joy!
Geez. Amazing. A practical person can tell what needs support and where.
Section two: Party B Response - in writing no less the faulty builder states: 'Send me a bill to fix it so we can both walk away from this mess' - that sounds like (a) admission of liability and (b) he wants to be charged to fix it. You have it in writing.
How the AF do we as Australians allow our government to get away with this, in that it EFFING DESTROYS SO MANY LIVES!!!

Well our building industry was supported by the Liberals. Anything and everything shady about this industry goes. You can't get accountability when it's been rotten to the core for 8+ years. You'd have to retrain all builders over a decade to reach a national standard. Something neither party are willing to touch.
because people keep voting for the same corrupt ,incompetent lazy political parties. that have no interest to help anyone but their big corporate /union donors..
I'm not a builder but everywhere I looked on this death trap I keep seeing things that I definitely would not do if I were building it myself. From the shabby roof, the gaps in the roof, the hole in the right side of the so called patio where a child could walk out to their death, cross beams underneath, SEVERE LACKING of support beams horizontally and vertically, missing so many bolts and nails and nailing things into nothing, cross beams supported by nothing, welding places to the uprights were virtual tack welds, and 1 bolt, hell no way.
Floor boards supported quite literally by nothing, railing at edge non existent, should be a I would say at least comes up from a sturdy square tube steel upright say around 10 cm X 10 CM X 4mm at least, and attached to that 6 or 8 meter square tube a welded horizontal bar same size as that wood dimensions, and welded to the upright on all 4 edges on each side both sides maybe something. and so much more.
Redirect the rain water from what was there to a new system and spread and then re direct it to 2 or 3 new down pipes with new guttering, and in the corner were roof meets house, do it proper so rain water does not go down the walls of the existing house.
So I could be here all day saying about what I saw wrong, and what I believe should have been done to rectify it, ESPECIALLY the underneath side where they would be walking on. I spot all this and I am not a builder.
So many shonky dodgy builders.
Sub standard and way out of wack concrete so called support foundations, and when you go to the side car port, the side gate is supported by the rood, did anyone see that the pole was not attached to the foundation plate ? not to mention the missing concrete foundations.
Been through DBDRV, they have no power and no authority, pointless when you got a dodgy builder who is not willing to do what is right, but unfortunately they make you go through that.
If that were my place I would want the entire thing demolished and get the entire $47,000 back and start again.
I would get proper drawings and measurements done up myself, make sure everything is triangulated and quadruple measured and confirmed.
How much weight is to hold in any one area, how many vertical support beams are needed and in what area, and how to securely attach the horizontal support beams to the vertical support beams, and how to support all the horizontal support beams via the cross beams, and how many cross beams would be needed to be secured to ensure the firmness of the floor beams which one walks on so all the weight would be evenly distributed so there is no bowing, and all the cross beams can take that weight, and to ensure no movements of any vertical or horizontal support beams.
Also need to know how to PROPERLY attach to or seam into the existing dwelling, 100% not like what they did.
It needs to be main support beams along every section along the house and boundary of the patio so that someone could ( as an example ) someone 110 kg could stand up against the wall of the existing house and jump up and down and securely know there is not a snowflakes chance that anything would give, because the support beams are securely secured to the house properly, and also takes the brunt of the load across a solid strong thick beam to a vertical upright to bear the load, and another solid beam, maybe 60 mm X 200 mm thick horizontal support beams supported by another such beam at the end of that beam secured so that it would hold the weight.
horizontal support beams possibly no greater than 300mm apart to avoid bending and drooping of top floor panels which people walk upon.
But then again as I said, I am not a builder, maybe best to get someone who this site inspector would know and recommend.
Too many dodgy builders, even when insurance people send out their dodgy careless builders who are so incompetent.
I built a wood fence about 20 years later and another one 10 years later and 20 years later and 10 years later respectively it still as good as the day we put it up, strong and solid.
DBDRV Al#x determined our case was too 'complicated' for them to investigate. WTAF!
The problem is the owner wanted a cheap job ....and got a cheap job. The builder obviously has VERY LITTLE appreciation for span tables and member sizing or loads. Likely has NEVER heard of them. Its a case of this timber looks big enough, yep I'll use it. This bolt looks big enough, no worries, I'll use it.
@@cher4963 DBDRV are useless and powerless and have absolutely no authority and can not do anything.
They are only a meeting point where there is a mediator who mediates a meeting between the 2 partys to talk it out to see if they can agree to make a decision one way or another. But the mediator / DBDRV have absolutely no power or authority and can not compel or enforce or decide one way or another, If there was a way to mediate and resolve the issue, it would have been done before it reach the DBDRV.

The home owner should be reaching out to their local member of parliament - you will be surprised how much assistance you can get when an elected bureaucrat gets involved and brings the issue to the VBA etc.
Bring the issue to the VBA... to do what exactly? Its a really messy area of the law if you're not covered by legislation (which this owner would not be)
If the "builder" is not registered and basically a DIYer , then unfortunately the VBA, as useless as it already is, cant to that much. Homeowners assume their own risk if they hire people to do "under the radar" cash jobs when they have NO clue themselves. Its one thing to hire someone if YOU know what correct or not so you can supervise and check but its VERY risky for the weekend warriors or worse, those that struggle to identify a hammer.

It would cost a minimum of 1.6k$/ 1 sqm in Poland with cheapest possible materials. Railing alone costs 150-200$aud/m in Poland idk what prices u have in AUD but that 1k$/1 sqm price before tax with materials is crazy low. No wonder this looks like shiet. And i bet the owner was well aware of everything.
This guys comments sum this up.
"The owner increased the size of the deck and also the house is covered in aspestos as the owner is well awere and would not pay to get it removed. Therefore we said we will not fix it to the house"
- Aspestos houses are illegal in Poland since 90s is it different in AUD ?
"The client wanted something cheap wasnt willing to pay for plans and permits did not want to do it the right way"
@@gaav87really no one should have done the job then.
He did.
So it's on him regardless.
Stucco contractor in Florida. Best channel on UA-cam we need you here in United States. Stay safe, brother.
I appreciate that
this bloke is a true cowboy builder he needs to be held accountable for his incompetent work
Just a cowboy, the word builder should not be associated with him
@@blordo😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
We need your expertise in every state and territory. ❤
Thank you for helping out a person in need
This is unreal, makes Aussie construction looks so weak. Appreciate your work mate!
Cable ties instead of saddles or Clip heaps on the downpipe. Genius 😅
I noticed that too.
I'm an American and I can tell this is so jacked up. Interesting learning about Australian building codes. Thanks.
I know absolutely nothing about the building industry and have no idea about the rulings but i can see when something doesn't look right but thank you i am slowly learning some things and so very thankful you are working to get rid of these crooks but geeze it sounds like there are sooo many of them that ruin things for the ones that do the right things
The Southern Hemisphere's answer to Mike Holmes!!
It's so sad and disgusting that people do this to other people .
Yeah . . old white women that get baseball batted from behind by 'joggers'
12.48 Love the 3 bolts with no nuts.
Are you sure you didn’t have a big breakfast before walking on that deck? 😂😂😂 I’ve seen some bad builders but I think this one takes the cake in balcony category. We need more of you Australia wide. Name and shame this guy, shocking that the VBA does nothing, maybe that woman belongs in jail for not doing her job. Typical government agencies all talk and no action, plus definitely no bite. Hope local builders get in to fix this
Those sirens are for rural fire fighters to be made aware of a bush fire. They do this in rural parts of nsw
I feel there’s two sides to the story here. Why would you engage work with someone over Facebook market ? When taking such big structural works it’s quite obvious you need plans and permit/ structural drawings which I’m sure she was informed and is at her own responsibility to organise but chose to ignore it to save some bucks. I feel this was all self inflicted … if you can’t afford something then don’t do it until you can get it done properly or suffer the consequences . It’s like people getting cheap and poor quality dental work overseas but it ends up being a big fuck up and they have to spend more money to fix it up locally
Because hiring real tradies is expensive dontcha know.
The VBA must act on this , this guy has to be stopped and taken to court
😂 they have not and will continue to do nothing
Maybe we could start a petition
The guy is broke. You'd be chasing nothing and lawyers will end up costing YOU money.
@@DanTuberunfortunately so true. Some things should be criminal.
@@DanTuber correct and yet the VBA are doing nothing to stop him doing it again
I love your work ❤
Thank you Site Inspections for looking after people.
Sorry, but this is not just construction industry, myself as German living in Melbourne, I shake my head when I see the Australian quality, the homes looks like Gingerbread houses here, the education is just a joke, health care is overpriced, especially the dentist and even the traffic fines are ridiculous. Restaurants are also super expensive for what you got! No wonder that Australia struggles with tourism as there is no value for money! I say this country is just like kindergarten with low skills overall, but I do not blame the people, people here are not stupid, I blame the system!
sometimes i think it's intentionally expensive because they want to keep out what they deem to be "undesirables." same reason why they don't have easy public transport access to the wealthy suburbs in the east and north of sydney.
Unfortunately mate, you are 100% correct, we are on an express elevator to becoming a second world country, and that is gods honest truth. No fucker wants to work and if they do it’s half arsed and they let you know how inconvenient it is for them
Sad, but true. The system really does allow it, years of little $ into training trades, and the culture here towards education.
That's what we get when our politicians are hellbent on Australia becoming 'USA Jr.' instead of following the lead set by Europe's advanced nations. Frustrating as hell mate.
we used to have excellent apprenticeship schemes, schools and employers. Many Europeans started companies here, from fitting and turning, manufacturing, building from concrete to rooves. There was pride in doing a top quality job. Second rate work was unacceptable, a standard was set.
Eventually, governments decided to get involved, sell the apprentice schemes to 'companies' like Alltrades, who in my opinion, should never be allowed to run them. It destroyed the apprenticeship schemes because they don't allow an apprentice to stay in one place. 3rd and 4th years are 'dropped' to make way for 1st and 2nd year placements, leaving tens of thousands of young people without a trade, unless they can find a company to hire them, of which, companies are closing.
Government decisions to 'import' everything has destroyed our economy. Our farms, auto industry, fk, everything, and they have the gall to pat themselves on the back and hand out massive wage increases while telling the citizens to 'go suck an egg', of which not everyone can afford an egg
we've gone from self sufficient to heavily reliant on foreign 'junk' that just doesn't last.
What get me with Councils inspection is they don't know nothing or can read a structure engineering drawing as in that case it needed a structure engineer drawing to even begin with .
Before you pointed it out I was thinking that beam was a bit long, then when we saw how it was connected I couldn't believe that deck was standing on it's own. I can't believe you got up on top of that deck, I would have been terrified to breath on it. Would be a great video to see how much force it would take to pull it down, I'd image a rope and a few blokes could make quick work of it.
We had air-raid sirens in major cities here in Canada, up until the early 2000s they used to run a test once a year and you could hear it across the city.
I'm a plumber in Perth WA and we have to have police clearance pay $600 a year for a plumber licence no other trade has to have that, I could never look at myself if I even thought of doing something this horrible.
No other trades charge like you either bro !
Turd stragglers, that's why the police work needed shags.
What's the justification they use for that? It seems ridiculous.
@@ben-vf I hear you, some do charge heaps and take advantage of people last year a plumber from Metropolitan plumbing services charged a lady $10000 they told her she had a gas leak and didn't. They had depression for awhile. But now she has her local plumbers my dad and I that are fair and do good quality work.
Naming & shaming the builder's is the only way to stop this from happening to others & the inspectors that pass the buildings in some of your other videos should be reported.
Really hope this would get sorted for good.
I've been building houses for nearly 50 years. First name basis with some inspectors. I sleep well at night. This shit scares me.
Another couple of thing to keep in mind....
Firstly, obviously there is no builders warranty insurance because the 'builder' wasn't registered and didn't (couldn't) take it out. The important part of the warranty insurance is that it is only activated when the builder has died, disappeared or has become insolvent (think of it more like death insurance than car insurance);
Second, if the VBA do go after the builder for a financial penalty, then the VBA and the owner are competing for what little money the builder has. If he can't fix his transmission without getting an upfront payment then odds are a good he has limited money (and any assets will be in his partners name and unable to be touched). So if we are generous and say he has $50K and the only creditors are the VBA and the owner (HIGHLY unlikely), then they would split the money (after admin fees) on an even basis.
let him sell everything he owns to pay this bill. its principal not financial gain.
@@elliottb7009 I agree it is the principle of the matter. My point is that VBA involvement can be a two edged sword. They really do nothing for the current owner (as evidenced by the referral to the disputes board) and then they are likely competing for limited (or no) money with the homeowner.
The best you can hope for is that the VBA makes it very difficult for him to do this to someone else.
However, if home owners don't do their due diligence before hand then dodgy operators can (currently) continue to operate and try to avoid the VBA.
The VBA can only fine a non registered builder, recouping any monies is a civil matter unfortunately. If you arent a RBP you can pretty much do what you like with complete impunity.🤬
You sir are a national treasure
I agree
This is why it is vitality important to always do your research and only engage fully licensed builders. The whole industry needs improvement.
Outstanding content as usual mate, your doing gods work out there. Deserve way more subs that's for sure.
Speechless
Oh my gawd that is dangerous. What a hack job. Slap some silicon on it, will be fine…
You are a hero for even walking on that deck.
Love your channel and content mate.
That slapped together fence ,
its not made to be shaken !!
I travelled to Australia the other week and I was passing through immigration,
they said to me "Do you have a criminal record?" I replied "I didn't realize that it was still a requirement to get in here".😂
This so called builder is out there - daily producing this level of work to unsuspecting customers .
With that monstrous things . live n blessings Wendy x
You are one brave man to walk on that thing.
He’s put together a fancy pile of firewood.
The old structure looked better. She could have just kept it.
