- This was a hard video to make... but I think it's important to highlight our failures so that we can learn from them and become better. Love you all.

I know it's been awhile but don't stress about this, your videos are helping me a lot for my cfi training, check ride is in two days. BUT, I have failed a check ride because of slow flight before (even after passing pwr off stalls). It's hard to admit failure over such a simple thing but you definitely do remember the small things after something like that!
"Good luck. You're gonna do it. You're gonna make him proud." Man, that comment made chills run though my spine. Can only imagine the pressure you were under. However, I'm sure your grandpa would have been proud of you regardless.
Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your experience.
I'm sorry to hear about your Grampa and also about your checkride. Thank you for this honest video and to share your experience and the outcome. Of course congratulations for passing your checkride. Even after failing the first one, it does not make you less capable of doing a great job. I'm sure you are a great CFI.
This means a lot! Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing with us in this manner .. Nothing but love and respect for you Clayton please know that we value your honesty & efforts so deeply and completely .
Your grandpa is indeed looking down proud .
Bro! I busted on my CSEL checkride for not doing clearing turns. Just remember man, safety first! We get too eager sometimes!
Thanks Clayton for your honesty and selfless example. That’s the kind of instructor anybody would want. Your Grandpa is just as proud of you for that as for passing the check ride. I struggle sometimes with honesty in a misguided attempt to spare hurt feelings. Doesn’t work. I’m scheduled for my CFI check ride this coming June with said DPE. Thanks to you, I will not forget clearing turns. 😂
This DPE is one of my absolute favorites. I've sent multiple students to him since passing my CFI. I hope you enjoy it with him!
Clayton, thank for being so candid! Emotion and stress is such an important factor in being mission ready. You being courageous in talking about it can save lives. Mad respect for you. I know your grandpa is proud!
Thank you for the awesome content!
I remember on my private checkride being asked what I wanted to start with. I said lets get the stalls out of the way and start with a power on stall. He said let's do it and so there I went. In the climb to my stall he asked "would you consider what we just did as a clearing turn" My heart sank. I said no let's do that now and that was my freebee. I makes the rest of the ride so much more alert knowing you already messed up and got a pass.
You’re a good guy for sharing your mistake. It’s very easy to share our successes, but very difficult to share our failures. We’re all human 😁.
Damn so easy to forget clearing turns, I’m going to be thinking of you when I do my cfi checkride and hopefully don’t make the same mistake.
Thanks Clayton for the brutally honest video. This is a courageous moment in your life and you DID make your grandfather proud by doing this video. There is no doubt taking a check-ride of any kind is extremely stressful for us. Failing your ride based on clearing turns is minor, but obviously the DPE couldn’t over look that. I think maybe the “macho” attitude kicked in for you in not postponing the ride and I think that is the real lesson to be learned. As I approach my CFI ride I want to keep in mind to stack the deck in my favor with sleep, Wx and stress. Thanks again Clayton.
You are awesome. Sometimes the best learning experience is failure. Wish you the best going forward.
Thanks for sharing! Had a phase check and also forgot clearing turns.
Like you, I will never forget that step lol. Learning a lot from your videos. Congratulations!
Thank you so much!
