Don't feel bad about the rice and the wheat if its not brown or not. As a Greek I can say that you nailed it. We don't really have this "whole wheat" thing, we just don't eat super processed and refined grains. For me mediterranean food it's all about fresh fruit and vegetables from the food market , olive oil and buying meat and dairy from good sources. A tip from me would be to eat tomatoes, zuccinis, cucumbers, eggplants in summer and leeks, cabbage, celery, beetroots, wild greens etc in winter time (so when they are on season).
@@karleyj9706 buying in season is ALWAYS better. here in the US we are used to buying whatever whenever because we have produce shipped here from around the world. but if you do some research on when fruits and veg are in season and buy them when they’re in season, it’ll be healthier, more nutritious, tastier (seriously, try a tomato in winter and one in summer and the summer one will be MUCH BETTER), and it will probably come from closer to home instead of from halfway around the world, even if you buy it from walmart. don’t overwhelm yourself tho, start slow and try a seasonally appropriate recipe or two and just keep at it.
And you cook your own meals most of the time, not true? Hi hate store bought processed foods, we are not spoiled for choice when it comes to pre-cooked meals anyways where I am from.
I started trying to eat more seasonally this past year, and I found that I enjoy eating the meals I make much more. It feels like a treat when I wait till something is in season to eat it.
This is probably one of the most realistic and best videos I’ve ever seen on making healthy lifestyle changes. Not weight loss focused, HEALTH focused! Mental, physical and even relational health! This is what works!! Love this.
I am sooo sorry about your loss, Katie! Losing a furry family member is so challenging and they can go so quickly! Sending you much love and light. I have really been wanting to try this lifestyle and this might be the boost I needed!
As a Mediterranean, Spanish specifically, you nailed it with that sliced tomato with olive oil and herbs on top. It's very typical from here to eat that with your main dish. We usually eat salads (as a side dish) everyday for lunch and dinner but when we don't feel like eating it we switch it up for sliced tomato with some parsley on top, olive oil and some minced garlic. It's truly simple and delicious.
And while true people in Spain eat vegetables and fruit regularly (especially the older generations), it is also true that Spain is the country in the EU that consumes most meat, which is not particularly healthy.
A quick clarification: For us, Mediterranean people, the Mediterranean diet is not a conscious decision, something that we can join or not. We're used to eating like this ever since we are born because of our History, traditions, and the ingredients available in our region. Thus, it's no surprise that it's not restrictive. Even though it's called 'diet', it doesn't have that meaning. For us, it's just our normal alimentation, and I love to see some accurate representation of it. Great job!
For some people, especially Americans, it is a diet because it restrict fast food and instant food, and also less meat, more fresh veggies than their usual.
As a Greek person I would never say our diet is plant based as we eat lots of red meats such as lamb, beef and even more non-traditional rabbit or different small birds with veggies as the side. Also we love our dairy such as yoghurt and different cheeses like halloumi or your usual parm.
But you have to keep in mind that this diet is very very old. Hints of similar food choices were even found in Ancient Greece. In the past, red meat was much harder to come by for every day meals, not to mention people were really really poor so they couldn't afford it for as often. I agree with you that our cuisine now consists of way more red meat and poultry and, in some households, even less fish & seafood, but that's not how it was in the past which was where the Mediterranean diet has its roots ;)
@Artoria Pendragon sorry, I don't quite understand what you're asking me. In the video there was used a food pyramid that had red meat on the top as the least consumed food of the diet & I was replying to OP who said that we actually eat more meat than shown in the video. My point was the difference in eras - red meat is much easier to come by now than it was 100 years ago for example, that's why it was consumed less back then.
@Artoria Pendragon Well Katie didn't eat any red meat in the video and she based her diet on that food pyramid I already mentioned in my first two comments. So I'm just saying that yes nowadays more meat is being consumed indeed, but in the past it didn't, that's why this diet is considered more plant based. I don't know how else to explain it really 😅
@Artoria Pendragon Yes this is it. It's not like I'm Greek and I know my people, and our current diets and culture and my ancestors' diets and culture, I am only assuming. You figured me out. Please accept my sincerest apologies.
@Artoria Pendragon I don't think you understand my comments because I actually agree with OP. The diet portrayed in the video is not accurate to nowadays, that's all I was saying.
Hello from Spain! I'm from a Mediterranean island (Mallorca) and I just wanted to say that the Mediterranean diet is pretty simple, just a few easy changes in your cooking can really improve your health. The main thing is using Olive oil and cooking for yourself instead of eating out. When I was in USA I realized that you don't eat that much for lunch, like a sandwich or something not that nourishing and then you are constantly snacking throughout the day because your are hungry! In my opinion, you should eat better but more for lunch, and then for dinner I don't eat a lot, just a salad or something light and at least an hour before I go to sleep. And having at least once a week vegetables like lentils , chickpeas or beans it's great too. I'm just saying what my family does and I have a great history of my relatives living well past their nineties :) Btw, I'm really sorry about your cat, I'm an animal lover and i can't even think about loosing my dog.
Don't feel guilty about the white rice in sushi, it's a very healthy meal! Besides, though I'm all for including more whole grains into our diets (I mostly eat brown bread, for example) the truth is that many traditional Mediterranean recipes use different varieties of white rice, like bomba or Arborio.
I typically eat eastern asian cuisine, which almost always includes white rice. It’s totally possibly to have a healthy meal that includes white rice. My average meal includes a cup of cooked white rice, 2 or three different veggies, and usually some fish or chicken. White rice is totally healthy, as long as it’s part of a balanced meal. Every other grain I eat is whole grains, like whole grain pasta and bread (though I rarely eat pasta or bread). Why people feel guilty for eating white rice, o don’t understadn
@@dragonfly9821 they worry about calories and won’t have potato’s and pasta, but then have a 400 calorie smoothie in the mornings that won’t fill them up.
I agree with the comment above... processed grains raise your insulin. However as someone who was keto for years and now eats rice and potatoes I clearly see that I used to eat half a box of cereal, several servings of pasta in one sitting plus juice and whatever garlic bread on the side (this is not including the high carb breakfast, soda, and snacks I had all day). I'm 100% sure that was why my blood sugar was so high and not the actual potatoes and rice. I don't eat processed food or anything with added sugar at all anymore but I will eat rice or potatoes, I don't crave pasta anymore.
I'm from Italy and I found it somehow hilarious how she kept associating all these non food related things like going for walks and spending time with friends and family to Southern Europe as if Americans had never heard of it lol
Yeah! Most Americans definitely do go on walks lol. Especially in areas that have access to trains and buses. People who live in states that are below sea level (some of Southern USA and the Midwest) often have to drive and it's hard for them to walk from one place to another because there's no metro system and buildings are too far apart. I live near Washington D.C. (USA's capitol) so, it's easy for me to get access to the Metro and I walk around a lot.
@@cutienerdgirl most Americans in cities with mass public transit.* Most American cities maybe have a bus system, and in cities like that, most probably drive because they are more sprawling areas
A very important aspect of a healthy diet is eating fresh produce and cooking things yourself. As an Indian my diet is mainly comprised of wheat rotis/rice for each meal with seasonal vegetables or lentils to accompany them. In my household Sundays and Wednesdays are generally reserved for a lunch of chicken, fish or meat (mutton) dishes. Fruits are used as snack or desserts, for example a good sweet mango or watermelon is a wonderful dessert after meals. Fried food is also an occasional treat. And because the majority of my daily food intake is healthy, I don't feel too bad about eating out or enjoying pasta, cheesy foods, or some processed snacks when I feel like I have a craving for them. As my grandpa (died aged 90+ due to an injury but was very healthy otherwise) used to say "Eat everything but always know your limits, too much of anything is bad."
As someone who’s half arab, this diet is typically how we eat since we’re close to the mediterranean and i love it!!! the food is super nutritious and delicious!
As a Greek and registered dietician I missed some meals in the video. Here in Greece, it as in other Mediterranean countries we usually have breakfast, a good lunch and dinner with some snacks like fresh fruit in between. In fact dinner is rather late, after 8pm and sometimes is lighter than the lunch. Plus honey and cheese are very common as a part of our daily diet! But love the effort! Take good care of yourself and those who love Katie!
@@carolineptenchick Well it depends on their preferences actually! The traditional Mediterranean food pyramid states that fish and seafood should be consumed more frequently on a weekly basis and red meat only once every 10 (or more) days. Until 50 years ago, people in Greece used to consume a lot less meat and more legumes, vegetables, grains etc. These things were more available to them. The ones living in islands had access to seafood too. But nowadays with more people in Greece gathered in cities, their diet is actually a lot like the western type with a lot of meat and processed foods. As a dietitian it is common to see people that want to eat something meaty every day. A lot of Greeks like also fish and seafood too, but in general these foods are not consumed more than twice a week. More frequent is the consumption of fish and seafood during the summer vacations in Greek Islands I believe! I hope that I answered your question!
@@Maria-Chrysafi thanks for your comment, i’m italian and i feel it’s exactly the same for italian people. Mediterrean diet is something like the traditional diet but nowadays with globalization and “big-cities lifestyle” we’re gettin more and more similar to the typical western diet with a lot less vegetables and legumes, and a lot more processed foods and meat, unfortunately
I'm so sorry about your cat!! Sending you love and positive thoughts. I lost my cat in July that I had for 15 years. Most of this food looked fairly easy to make and delicious. Definitely made me hungry. I love tomatoes and could eat them every day
Californian here and this is the way I was raised eating, very fresh and homemade, shopping at the farmers markets every weekend, growing some of our own herbs and produce. We also raised our kids to have dinner with us at the table every night. In recent years I've added more olive oil and cheeses alongside our food and also don't snack at all anymore. Ever. That's very important. It's hard to get the daily exercise, though. We live in the mountains and very rural, the terrain is very steep. I wish it wasn't so hard to just go for a nice after dinner walk. It was fun to watch your good results from that delicious food you made and the great support from your sweet husband.
What I love about the Mediterranean diet is that nothing is totally off the table, it's just a matter of how frequently you eat certain foods. Having that cookie was okay, just wait for a special occasion before you have dessert again. Of course, if sweets cause you to fall off the wagon entirely, best to stay away. My Italian grandmas would be mystified about our obsession with diet, but the food companies have done a real number on all of us.
Sending my condolences for your cat. It is difficult to lose your pet, I know how you feel..❤️ Being Greek I confirm that yes, that's how we eat..I feel blessed to be living in this country where it is so easy to grow your own vegetables in your back yard. Visit Greece! Note: in a typical week we eat red meat only once or twice (usually Sundays), chicken once, fish twice, pasta once, and two days per week (on Wednesdays and Fridays) we fast ( fasting for Greeks means going vegetarian- eating vegetables, fruit and legumes, nothing deriving from animals). We consume healthy homemade desserts, olive oil is the only oil we use and we moderately drink alcohol such as tsipouro, ouzo, wines etc. The biggest meal of every day is lunch, not dinner! At least, that is how we are tought to eat by our parents..
Since being diagnosed with anxiety induced IBS, I have been leaning more towards the Mediterranean diet. I cannot do it full time where I live because seafood and veggies are too expensive but I've switched out white flour and white rice for brown and it has really helped. I use olive oil instead of other oils, I eat wholemeal bread drizzled in olive oil with fresh tomatoes most mornings for breakfast. Its a good change. :)
I’m so sorry for your loss! I hope that your heart heals soon. One suggestion - when you make your whole wheat pizza dough (or any breads) you can add things like garlic, oregano, paprika or other herbs &/or spices to enhance what you are serving it with. I love watching you & Chris!
I’ve got a desert recipe that I made and it should fit in your diet: it’s crushed pistachio and almonds same amount of each stuck together using warm honey and a couple of raisins until it sticks together then let it cool in the fridge. If not doing the diet you can add a bit of grated chocolate too
I went through an emotional rollercoaster , how absolutely beautiful and genuine you are. I'm so sorry for your loss . Your videos are so inspiring . Thanks for this videos.
Katie, I am sorry about the loss of your little fur baby. It is so hard, and it happens so quickly. Sending love and prayers. As for the diet, I'd never really though about making a lifestyle change, or incorporating the Mediterranean lifestyle in my life. However, after seeing some of the delicious looking foods that you and Chris at I am going to have to check it out! Thank you so much for sharing this 14 day journey with us.
My hands down favorite Mediterranean recipe is watermelon salad, it's super easy especially if you get the pre-cut watermelon. It's watermelon chunks, cucumber, and sliced red onion dressed with lemon juice and olive oil and some basil. If i'm feeling indulgent I also sprinkle in some crumbled feta sososososoooo good.
As a Spaniard: big occasions are definitely OKAY to indulge in! Practically mandatory, to be honest, because you need to enjoy food for your diet to work. You did great, Katie! Glad you're feeling good, and if you are keeping it up, definitely check out recipes from the eastern mediterranian contries, those are great too!
I'm italian and I think this video was quite realistic, I just wanted to point out that Mediterranean Diet is not completely plant based (we do eat white and red meat, they often are part of Mediterranean recipes) and we also eat a good amount of diary products, which I don't think you would find much in other regions of the world since they're very traditional. OH, and we do eat food with refined sugar. With this I'm not talking just about Italy but Mediterranean Diet in general. However all these are just traditions, everybody makes their own choices. Great video 😁
Great idea! And I think that the Mediterranean is also considered one of the "blue zones" where people are generally happier and live longer. Good on you! 😊💕
I haven’t seen that much cooked muesli in Mediterranean food, a good breakfast is Greek yogurt with a handful of walnuts, a drizzle of honey and some fresh berries or other fruits on the side. Or some bread with a bit of butter and again, fruit. We can also have some coffee with some fresh biscuits or pastries, we make up for hat with veggies and protein later on! Mediterranean diet is not restrictive, just conscious Edit: so sorry about your cat ❤️
I’m looking into the Mediterranean diet and I’m also in a really bad mood and you are the first person I’ve found who is informative and also not bugging the crap out of me. I really liked this, thank you.
I'm so sorry about your loss :-( It's very impressive that you actually got to COMMIT to a diet as you were going through such a hard time. Big kudos to you, Katie! That being said, as a Spaniard, your 'take' on the Mediterranean diet feels like a veeeeery Americanised idea of what we Mediterraneans consume. We definetely eat a lot of vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, aubergines...) and quite a bit of fish and seafood, too (your fish recipes look fabulous, by the way). Meat is definetely not off the menu, though. I don't know where that misconception might come from, but we consume a fair amount of meat, including some meats that are perhaps rare in the US, such as rabbit and lamb. Spain is quite renowned for its charcuterie (jamón ibérico, chorizo, fuet/salchichón, cecina, sobrasada...), as it's Italy (prosciutto, bresaola, mortadella...), and our Greeks brothers cook plenty of meat as well. We use a LOT of pulses (chickpeas, lentils...) , which I think might be missing from your recipes (I've only see you using beans). Finally, avocados aren't particularly "a thing" here - you can of course find them on the supermarkets since the last couple decades or so, but they're usually expensive since they can't be harvested here. Hope my comment won't be taken as an offense, since as I've said, I've enjoyed the video, and on top of that I think you're very brave for sticking to the diet despite your loss. Your boyfriend is genuinely so kind and supportive, you guys look like a hella nice couple. Happy New Year 2022!
Losing a pet is so hard, and I definitely go to food for comfort as well, I’m so impressed you stuck with it. I hope your heart remembers all the amazing things about your kitty 💖
I'm Italian, and I can tell you that you did a great job. The Mediterranean diet is so healthy, and most definitely a lifestyle change not just foods (but also foods that you excluded for 2 weeks) highly processed foods cause too common diseases nowadays. Please keep up the good work, and your health will greatly benefit (mental and physical) and your digestion, sleep, and energy level will improve as well.
Spaniard here. Avocados are definitely NOT a part of our daily diet considered as Mediterranean (just like italian or greek). I dont mean its not healthy or whatever, but Its just not a part of mediterranean diet, but maybe most of You think It is bc of that confussion of Spain = Mexico (even though We are 9000 kms away)
@@jmonta21 I really hope you mean the video girl. Even though avocados are forced in our diet, its not part of mediterranean as olive oil (great from Spain, Turkey, Italy and Greece), fresh tomatoes, garlic, onion, basil, coriander and parsley, white fish, fresh veal/chicken/pork/goat/mutton meat and great variety of herbs and vegetables + bread....
I love the Mediterranean diet. there’s nothing to hate about it and it’s so easy to follow, in my case I just had to stop treating myself like a garbage can and respect my body. I’ve been on the med diet for two years now and I don’t miss anything that I used to eat like glutton in the past which made me fat in the first place. So I could say that it’s the best decision I’ve made in my life, since I began it I lost so much weight and now I’m super lean and fit , I’m not ashamed of how I look ,I’m healthier and I don’t get depressed and have mood swings as I used to when I was overweight .Please start loving and respecting yourself and your body more, Ditch trashy foods, ditch trashy people , and eat mindfully to live, and stop wasting your life.
@@amlina1541 I can see you get triggered by facts of how SHE FELT. Fun fact she not once called herself a pig but you sure assumed she thought she was.
The word "diet" is interchangeably used here and in many articles/videos. A Mediterranean diet simply means the food that people in Mediterranea regularly eat. It can be a lifestyle change to eating Mediterranean region cuisine just because it is healthier than our current cuisine selection(s). "I am going on a diet" means you wish to restrict what food you eat to lose weight.
not really? the word "diet" means the way one's eat, its just people are using it a lot in a specific reason, but the meaning of diet is literally each person habits of feeding themselves
@@lilib6215 that is exactly what the other person said. A Mediterranean diet is what people usually eat in that area, your diet is what you typically eat. However, the word diet is commonly used to indicate that you will change your eating habits for a short period of time in order to lose weight.
As a French person who grew up on the Mediterranean diet, I got to day you did really good! We do tend to eat a lot of fruits as desert and snack though, it's our sweet note (also, dark chocolate at the end of a meal ^^)
I live in Abruzzo and one of the things I really love about my lifestyle here is that my fiancé comes home for lunch every single day and we eat almost every lunch and dinner at the table together. However at lunch we do usually watch the news.
I am so sorry for your loss, Katie! I had to put my cat down in 2021. Still get emotional talking about it for too long. Good job for completing the challenge and hanging in there.
When I try and do my healthy eating, I'm always craving carbs or bread but the thing that stuck out for me was that you said you never felt hungry on this diet. I liked that it was mostly veges and your protein was chicken cos that's what I tend to eat (but just add lots of butter and salt) I want to change my eating habits forever and this seems like the food plan for me. Rather than losing weight, I want to feel and be healthy and happy without depriving myself so I'm definitely gonna try this out. Thanks for sharing this 🙌
One of the keys to Mediterranean diet is eating what is in season. It's cheaper, it's healthier and it's tastier. Not to mention more sustainable. Try working on that. Also: you can consume dairy daily if it's yogurt or goat milk. Ricotta is another non-fat dairy product. Cheese made with goat milk in general is lighter, which means you can eat more. Last but not least, pizza tip 😄: semolina is the best for pizza dough. Whole grain flour is not indicated. You can try a dough with half white flour and half whole grain flour for a better flavor and a better consistency, but semolina is the best. And MOZZARELLA. After you put the sauce put shredded mozzarella on top of it, not cheese. Then a bit of olive oil, some oregano or two leaves of basil if you prefer. Then bake it. Ham or other toppings are unnecessary, choose good quality ingredients for the pizza and it'll taste divine even with nothing on top of it.
I'm sorry for your loss. I lost two cats and I know how real the grief is. "I wanted to commit to taking care of myself." That's literally where I'm at in my life right now. You're very positive and I love how much you're actually enjoying this diet which makes me feel so good about going into this! I'm a big potato girl so this makes me feel good lol Love how much your man is supporting you! It's good when you have support.
Kudos for trying it out! As a Greek however, this looks a bit like a fancy and expensive version of it, especially with the avocado addition... :o In my household we ate lots of green bean stews, other assorted vegetables stews or bakes (always with feta for sure!), fish with boiled potatoes and broccoli etc. So a lot of plain cheap vegetarian dishes and the minority was fish and meat. Basically the rationale is, go to the farmer's market and buy whatever is in season and cheap and make something out of it. Oh and add oregano in everything! :P Also while whole grain bread is a thing, I would not say that the mediterranean diet demands whole grain pasta. As far as I know Italians dont typically go for whole grain pasta and they're fine health-wise. Also no reason to vilify white rice. For desserts, in Greece there are some traditional sweets using grape must, simple orange or lemon zest shortbread cookies etc. But honestly growing up for my family most nights dessert was just in season fruits: apples, mandarins, oranges, kiwi, grapes, peaches, quinces, pomegranate etc.
I'm an American attempting to follow it. I don't use whole grain pasta when I eat pasta. I buy the semolina type which is actually pretty good for you--I don't eat like a huge pile of pasta, it's part of other dishes. I would say, avocados are probably cheaper here than in Greece, so there is that. (Also salmon which is very healthy).
I also lost my kitten two weeks ago. It was especially sad for my kids. I’m so proud of you for sticking to your healthy lifestyle plan!! I did not have the strength to but now I am inspired by you!
Where i could find a husband like Chris? Like, he's so pure, so nice, so lovely, everything, like you're so lucky to having Chris by your side, Katie 😣
I am from Italy and i can confirm in summer me and my family (of four people) eat so much vegetables that we usually bring home around 15 kg of them home for approximately one week, between salad, tomatoes, potatoes, paprika, zucchini, onions and so on and we always cook fresh, except pasta, as it takes a lot of organizing with our usual daily life
I’m so sorry for the loss of your fur baby ❤️ Thank you so much for posting this video,my family and I ordered the Mediterranean Diet cookbook today, you inspired me!

AWWWH KATIE... I'm so sorry you lost your kitty! 😭I'm extra impressed you stayed on your diet through that bc when I'm going through a major loss ALL I want to do is eat...
I feel like in this video she thinks Mediterranean diet is a diet to loose weight, but not, the Mediterranean diet is a way we eat in this part of the world and it's like a lifestyle
You are so amazing and inspiring for getting back on track so quickly after the passing of your cat. I hope you and your husband are still healing well after no matter how long its been. ❤️
Yes, you can have gnocchi. Also you could occasionally have fruit crumble (crisp) for dessert or some other fruit based dessert. Congratulations on your progress. 👍😁
My husband and I are gearing up to a Mediterranean food lifestyle. I am one whom is riddled with autoimmune diseases, RA, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Fybro, etc. I am 66 and my husband is 77. The only, and this is a big one, suffered from a rare condition that left his right eye with an 80% vision loss. I want to do everything I can to extend our life in as healthy a lifestyle as we can. This will include eating well and getting more walking in. I would like to thank you for doing this video. Of all the ones I have watched yours has been the most helpful. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved kitty. I wept with you and then restarted your video. You and your husband, and of course your sweet little fur baby are so adorable and fun. Best of everything to you and your family.
I live in Europe and it's funny to see that all these menus are simply part of everyday life for many Europeans and I'm always surprised that it's not logical for US-Americans that exercise and lots of vegetables and less sugar are much healthier. So, thank you for making the world a little healthier. And my condolences.
It's not that we do not have the common sense to realize these facts, we are simply addicted to the additives and sugar in our food. We are bombarded with fast food options EVERYWHERE we go.
Just a tip, pizza once a week is absolutely normal in the countries along the Mediterranean. Friday nights are always pizza night, most people think we eat pizza all the time but nope, Fridays! Family pizza night. And wholewheat is not really a thing for us, bread/flour/pasta. Mostly because of bread/flour/pasta is not processed or made with sugar.
So sorry about your loss... such unexpected things happen and then we feel useless because we couldn’t save our family member... wishing your cat to be in a peaceful place... Thank you for trying the Mediterranean diet, I grew up with that diet and it is very healthy. Glad you could enjoy it too.
As a turkish greek girl i didnt realise my day to day was a lot of work its so interesting to see Americans go shopping and meal prep every night as a chore i also never ever eat brown rice so don't feel guilty about that you just gotta eat everything in moderation and the best thing to do is eat in season! l one thing you did miss out though is cheese milk and dairy we do eat a lot of that in our diet especially for breakfast and lunch and no avocados hehehe
Sending you warmth and love to circle you during your loss. Thank you for sharing all this with us, life happens (unfortunately) and you bounced back so gracefully. ♥️
I know words can only make you feel so better Katie but just know this strangely on the Internet is sending you the most loving and healing vibes possible 🖤
As a spanish I would say that you made a great video!. Avocados do not grow in the mediterranean so is more something that has been introduced in the past years, but very healthy and yummy. I am very sorry for your loss I teared up a bit... We would love to see more videos like this. :) Loads of hugs!! PS: We eat a lot of cheese and also charcuterie.
When I fry fish in a pan I put a non stick baking paper under each fish fillet with a spray of oil .. stay beside in case but I never had problems. So easy to clean after and healthy
But that’s the beauty of the Mediterranean diet Katie 😂 The Mediterranean diet is the epitome of balance. By having the cookie 🍪 you were following a Mediterranean diet! Lol were you happy when you ate the cookie? *Egyptians made bread and I’m sure they were figuring out baklava while they were eating in their Mediterranean lifestyle 😉
First, ya'll are adorable! I love your energy and how positive you both are. I'm so deeply sorry for your loss, and you should be so proud of yourself for continuing your journey, so easy to get derailed from something like that. These recipes look amazing! Would you be up for sharing some of them? You mentioned you don't like salmon, as a lot of people don't, we do a salmon that I swear doesn't taste like salmon at all. Look up "Greek Salmon", it's like a greek salad ontop of the salmon and I actually crave it. Give it a try....I hope you like it!
Mediterranean food is so good for your health! A lot of research says that it reduces heart disease because of how much greens, fruits, and healthy fat is in your diet.
The best thing about this video, is the fact that you are eating together, without looking at the tv or the computer. Eating well is happiness, but eating together is joy
the Mediterranean diet is, mostly, represented in both greek and spanish cuisines, since their dishes are a product of Mediterranean based ingredients :)) you guys might wanna try it out too! 🇪🇸🇬🇷
Very well done video. Light-hearted, quick moving. Lots of info in a short amount of time. With photos of the meals. With “real” days choices mixed in. Inspiring me to add some variety like this to a mostly Keto type of life.
In Spain I think we deviate from this quite a bit. Breakfast is always coffee and usually something sweet, toast with jam and butter for example. Lunch would be a rice dish with vegetables and meat/ fish, fruit for dessert and salad with some cheese or yoghourt for dinner, or an omelette. No eggs for breakfast, no muesli either and more fruit and meat.
Loved this video. It felt relatable, realistic and authentic. I'm not going to lie I choked uo when you described your cat passing. Animals really become our family, I completely felt what you were saying about going to food in hard times (and in good) for that matter. I've followed the Mediterranean lifestyle for years and it's honestly the only thing that has ever helped me to lose, and maintain a healthy weight and ultimetly health.
ngl it's so nice to see your partner enjoy the food as well! It's so much easier making a change when your partner is up for it as well and enthusiastic!!
I've considered doing this lifestyle a few times but the problem is a lot of the foods in the mediterranean diet are high on the fodmap which for someone who has digestive and/or inflammation issues are a big no (for example that avocado toast and soup recipe were both a big no because the majority of ingredients were digestive triggers); while other foods they tell you to avoid are low fodmap (for example some days white rice is the only thing i can eat) 😬 simply put health is hard...
@@danielab2100 If I may ask how did you account for the high fodmap items in this diet? I unfortunately have an immune issue that causes a lot of digestive problems so I've been attempting to stay as low fodmap as possible as to avoid digestive upset and pain; heck some days the only thing I can stomach is white rice, plain white bread, and plain pasta which is obviously a big no on this diet...
So i'm italian and i would like to clear a point here. Nowadays the mediterranean diet is known as a healthy eating habit that does that and uses this ecc. but actually it's our tradition. The med diet came to be because we live in this territory and we use the local produce with simple cooking recipes and that's it. This said, not all mediterranean countries eat the same way and use the same ingredients so if you want to start this diet be conscious of what you're putting in your tummy, research the origins of that ingredient, go to some farmers in your area then you will be following the habits of the people that created this diet and you will feel better, trust me 😉
@@laurenelizabeth1390 slightly off topic, but this might help give you some variations of rice to eat. have you tried rice porridge or the asian versions aka congee or juk/jook? you can make them with water or any type of stock and then add meat, seafood, veggies, or herbs to it. i normally make mine with brown or white rice, chicken or veggie stock, garlic, ginger, and whatever veggies i have have, etc. some people add a soy sauce based sauce on the side or as a topper for more flavor but you can definitely leave that out. this dish is often made for people with digestive issues, who are sick with anything in general, etc. it can be a comfort food. you can search for recipes or variations of it on youtube on seonkyoung longest, made with lau, maangchi, marion’s kitchen, etc.
@@luci4087 I have actually had rice porridge before. Unfortunately brown rice still messes with my digestion from time to time so I have to use white rice which is technically a "no" for this diet. That being said I've always had the porridge by itself or with an egg I've never thought about adding any meat or veggies to it so I might just do that because that sounds like a really delicious meal. Thank you.
My heart broke for the couple for losing their Fur Baby . sorry for your lost 🙏🏼. mediterranean diet looks delicious and hard at the sametime . I love how consistent she is to keep up with the diet .
I live in a small town with no farmer's markets.. is it still better to eat what is in season if you shop at Walmart? :/
Hi hate store bought processed foods, we are not spoiled for choice when it comes to pre-cooked meals anyways where I am from.
also be sure to use SPICES!!!! i love the Mediterranean but it could be more flavorful.
I started trying to eat more seasonally this past year, and I found that I enjoy eating the meals I make much more. It feels like a treat when I wait till something is in season to eat it.

Same in Italy! It's delicious!
True. But. Celebs are making our food into circus food.
And while true people in Spain eat vegetables and fruit regularly (especially the older generations), it is also true that Spain is the country in the EU that consumes most meat, which is not particularly healthy.
@@DovahHouse 😐
I'm Italian! My family and I eat basically the same think, but we use vinegar instead of garlic!
Great job!
That's what a diet is, the way someone normally eats. It doesn't have to be restrictive or conscious or follow a specific goal.
For some people, especially Americans, it is a diet because it restrict fast food and instant food, and also less meat, more fresh veggies than their usual.
Yeah really good point!
In English (and Spanish) diet has 2 meanings. Your diet and being on a diet are completely different
tbf diet can have two different connotations.
I think your husband is amazing. The positive energy he brings is immense and he appreciates literally everything you do. You both deserve together ☺️
I just love how encouraging and positive your husband is!
I think "legumes" or "pulses" is a more accurate word than "vegetables" :)

@@IAmNotYourProblem So true, it's the same with potatoes. They're not unhealthy, people worry about white rice/potatoes/pasta because of calories...
@Artoria Pendragon I've never met a person who would think about insulin unless they were diabetic. I doubt it's a common concern.
I'm from Italy and I found it somehow hilarious how she kept associating all these non food related things like going for walks and spending time with friends and family to Southern Europe as if Americans had never heard of it lol
Sadly that is the case for some Americans 🥲
I was looking for this comment lol

Yes, I didn't get why she put "just a little handful" of cheese on the pizza, we would have put at least twice that 😅
Hi Maria, I was wondering if Greeks eat a lot of meat, esp pork, or is it really more seafood as stated in the video? :)
It is difficult to lose your pet, I know how you feel..❤️
Being Greek I confirm that yes, that's how we eat..I feel blessed to be living in this country where it is so easy to grow your own vegetables in your back yard.

@@lilib6215 there are "literally" two different definitions. Thanks for mansplaining. 😂

I’m so sorry to hear about your cat. They provide such supportive energy especially when we need it the most. 🐱🐱🕊🕊🕊
In Greece drinking a glass of wine during diner is like a must🍷
One of the keys to Mediterranean diet is eating what is in season.
I'm a big potato girl so this makes me feel good lol
Love how much your man is supporting you! It's good when you have support.
Kudos for trying it out!
As a Greek however, this looks a bit like a fancy and expensive version of it, especially with the avocado addition... :o
In my household we ate lots of green bean stews, other assorted vegetables stews or bakes (always with feta for sure!), fish with boiled potatoes and broccoli etc.
So a lot of plain cheap vegetarian dishes and the minority was fish and meat. Basically the rationale is, go to the farmer's market and buy whatever is in season and cheap and make something out of it. Oh and add oregano in everything! :P
Also while whole grain bread is a thing, I would not say that the mediterranean diet demands whole grain pasta.
Yeah this is the most American “Mediterranean” diet I’ve ever seen lol
That all sounds so good!
Right? 😅 I'm from Italy and when I saw the avocado toast I facepalmed. Mediterranean lol

I’m so sorry for the loss of your fur baby ❤️
Thank you so much for posting this video,my family and I ordered the Mediterranean Diet cookbook today, you inspired me!
Loved watching this, I'm so sorry you lost your cat they might be animals but they really become a part of your family, I've got 2 cats myself a mother and daughter and I don't even like to think what I would do if any of them passed away, how old was your cat if you don't mind me asking, tyfs this video even at this difficult time 💖💖
Hi Katie! Loved the different recipes you shared. Can you post the one with whole wheat pasta, rugelach, lemon, etc? It looked delish!
when i got diagnosed with fibromyalgia, i went on the mediterranean diet, and while i’ve gone off it, i do still love making a lot of the recipes i learned while one it. one of my favorite sweet recipes was olive oil sea salt chocolate chip cookies! sweet and salty and umami, all in a delicious chocolate chip cookie.
I'm so sorry your cat passed on, you really have some strength to go on and keep filming. Everything you made looks delisious!
AWWWH KATIE... I'm so sorry you lost your kitty! 😭I'm extra impressed you stayed on your diet through that bc when I'm going through a major loss ALL I want to do is eat...
Just got to say I love your husband! Lol he’s so encouraging and on board, love the closeness of the relationship during this video
I feel like in this video she thinks Mediterranean diet is a diet to loose weight, but not, the Mediterranean diet is a way we eat in this part of the world and it's like a lifestyle
And in fact level of obesity in Greece is quite high.

@@FutureCommentary1 because they eat processed food and not the Mediterranean diet.
I wish I can hug her about her cat 🥺 may he Rest In Peace. I’m sure you gave all your love to that kitty and will be forever thankful for it. 🖤
The husband is the fcn MVP. His support if her project is insane
i am so sorry to here about your cat, i really hope you’re doing okay and im sending you lots of love ❤️
In loving memory of your kitty.❤️ I cried
So sorry about your loss... such unexpected things happen and then we feel useless because we couldn’t save our family member... wishing your cat to be in a peaceful place... Thank you for trying the Mediterranean diet, I grew up with that diet and it is very healthy. Glad you could enjoy it too.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your kitty.😔 I have 5 and would be devastated! They are such precious friends!
You have to remember Americans are very hard working individuals so cooking meals from scratch would be a chore. We don't have hour long lunches.
I love how supportive her husband is
Greetings from Mediterranean, greetings from Greece ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Sending you warmth and love to circle you during your loss. Thank you for sharing all this with us, life happens (unfortunately) and you bounced back so gracefully. ♥️
Sorry about your cat, feel your pain as my oldest cat Bonnie (was 12 years old) was sick and passed away start of December last year 😭
I know words can only make you feel so better Katie but just know this strangely on the Internet is sending you the most loving and healing vibes possible 🖤
In Spain and Sicily avocados are farmed now.
When I fry fish in a pan I put a non stick baking paper under each fish fillet with a spray of oil .. stay beside in case but I never had problems. So easy to clean after and healthy
POV: You went to the comments while listening to the video
This was a really helpful video, thank you! I'm so sorry about your furbaby. Man it's hard to lose them. My heart goes out to you both
But that’s the beauty of the Mediterranean diet Katie 😂 The Mediterranean diet is the epitome of balance. By having the cookie 🍪 you were following a Mediterranean diet! Lol were you happy when you ate the cookie? *Egyptians made bread and I’m sure they were figuring out baklava while they were eating in their Mediterranean lifestyle 😉
True you don't necessarily eliminate sweets. I might have put a little honey in that yogurt bark. But it looked good.
What about Italy?
I'm so sorry about the loss of your Fur Baby. Thank you for powering through to help someone like me. Bless you both!
Ohhhh you should try to do the vegan diet for 14 days! I have been vegan for 2 years now and I feel like you'll love it! 🤩
I love how many people that actually live in the region corrected her about meat 😂🎉
When I see Katie, I feel like Aniket will join too! I miss those videos!
ngl it's so nice to see your partner enjoy the food as well!
I have digestive and inflammation issues - living in Europe and eating Med diet/food was the best thing ever.
