They added unique events in this entry where peasants will occasionally jump your mages and try to murder them in an inn for trying to steal their daughters. If your blood hunters aren't huge giants or combat chads, this can actually be a real threat (protip: assign them bodyguards).

QOL PROTIPS FOR EVERYONE: Since Illwinter doesn't believe in user-friendly design, some thing you'll want to know: -You don't have to make a Pretender on the new game setup screen, go to Tools & Manuals -> Create Pretender God, then on the game setup screen, when it asks you to create a god, hit Ctrl+L to load your pre-made pretender. This was actually easier in the previous entry so I have zero idea why they made it less clear for Dom 6. -Go to Main Menu->Preferences, turn on "Give orders to new commanders automatically" and "Multi turn movement". This will save you from having to tell every single new mage to do research and will allow you to tell someone to travel to a faraway province without having to micromanage every single step of the way. -Hit TAB on the god chassis selection screen to see what paths and scales the chassis have -Hitting ? on your keyboard will bring up a full list of possible commands and hotkeys, this is context-sensitive so it brings up a different list of commands based on what screen you were on.
This games fits on a single CD. Not a DVD, that holds 4.7 GB. A CD holds 650 MB, and this game squeaks under that limit. It's little things like that which convinced me, despite having never heard of this game until this moment, that whoever the dev is both knows what he's doing and made this with pure passion. I gotta give this a look later.
The Dominions series has been a decades-long project of two guys using just their free time. Each sequel is more of an iteration than a traditional sequel but with all of that work slowly building up it has a dwarf fortress kind of energy.
What makes modern games heavy is 3D models and textures and voice acting. If you have neither it greatly simplifies the game engine logic so its more lightweight too.
Literally the kind pf game which if you fell asleep playing it you would find yourself as a new god in a grimdark fantasy and start your adventure to ascension
Always see vids that are like "best game you never knew existed" and it's the most mainstream ass game but this is the first time it was actually true, I was surprised to not have heard of anything about this game series ever. You can play as the Nephilim and research lategame magic to release the Fallen Angels from their prison, which is pretty funky. Or you can use Blood magic to crossbreed humans with monsters, with the results dependent on how Lucky your god is. A powerful Nature mage can cast Transformation, turning him into a random animal (good luck increases the odds of a good body), while allowing him to keep his magic abilities. So he can become a Giant Bull or Ogre with magical powers! You can cast Burden of Time, which makes everyone age decades every month, leading to the entire world just dying off. There's just so many cool things you can do in Dominions, and a fair few of them are even viable in multiplayer. It's a lot of fun. The community's also really chill and supportive. Tons of modding potential, too!

There is a nation entirely made of monkeys. You can play as a lovecraftian horror with R'lye, which is fun now that there are new spells to sink the land into the sea. There is a nation of dog headed people, and one that is the scariest monster of all, women! This game is great.

You think that's bad? Try losing your Awake Expander to 60 Barbarians :) Srsly though, Cavemen are trash but they're dangerous specifically to big, lumbering brutes that can't dodge and rely on high armor for protection. Their attacks are inaccurate but with their high strength they will pierce the armor of giants and such quite easily. To deal with them, swarm them with smaller units or archers.
I think my favorite thing about this series is the story behind it, captured in the manual by Kristoffer Osterman. "The world of Dominions took its first insecure steps in 1997 on the road to Santiago de Compostela. ... I went to France and Spain for the summer for a 1,000mile walk. It took 72 days and I had a lot of thinking to do. Several ideas came up, including a bug war with ants, wasps and other bugs armed with cybernetics and guns. Some ideas from earlier in the spring evolved, and rudiments of Pythium, C'tis, Man and Lareaux (a conglomerate of Ulm and Marignon) came to life." Dude just decided to up and go on a 3 month walk on the other side of the continent and came up with a whole ass strategy game. Honestly this story from the manual remains a pretty big inspiration for me on what sort of experiences matter in life.
Fun fact: for the goat event, if you put a couple goats on a stealth commander you can send them into enemy territory, thereby using tactical dragon airstrikes against your enemies.
My favorite detail from this series is the bear claw talisman and cat charm. On top of their normal stat-bonuses, there's this semi-hidden effect of them masculinizing/feminizing the wearer. So if you're tired of having your important male characters seduced away by female enemies, you can feminize those men by putting cat charms on them. However, they do then turn gay and can be seduced by male seducers, but male seducers are often rarer. There's a lot of small details like that which can end up being relevant, such as the fact that vampires can't cross water despite having flying or the lizardmen being cold-blooded. It might seem like favor but I keep being surprised by how often things like that actually turn out to be relevant.
I was once in a multiplayer game where someone renamed their commander "I WANT MY BALLS CRUSHED" and someone failed a seduction attempt against him, was hilarious
I like this review because it vindicates a view I've had for a long time: I've always been saying that the standout feature of Dominions is its fluff and emergent storytelling potential, and you don't need to be a hardcore strategy game enthusiast (which I take the creator isn't, on account of confessing to not having played the genre classics) to enjoy that part of the game. You can just summon tarrasques and break dead titans free from Tartarus or wish for more wishes and simply have a good time exploring the possibilities, even if what you're doing isn't necessarily winning in the most efficient manner.
dominions is the deepest strategy game ever made, i put around five thousand hours in to dom 5 and was still being shown whole new ways to get owned my last game before 6 dropped

Ah yes, the game where the mechanics have mechanics. With the crazy spells where you can always know more, discover more interactions. For example, your fountain may be unable to move, but with the right path and research it might teleport. It's your pretender, so you get to choose far more magic path than any usual caster, with spells like invunurability, reconstruction, etc. making it impossible to kill via normal means. That strategy is what the community knows as a monolith drop, where a pretender teleports into an enemy army, laughs with far too high armor at any attempts to be destroyed and murderes your troops. Need to know a bit about stats and spells to make it work, and there is always more to try out.
One thing that the review failed to mention was the 'sacred' units. You see, each nation usually has at least one elite unit that's considered especially holy to their people, some kinda paladin or guardian of a holy tomb. You can also hire special commanders, priests, who are not necessarily very good leaders, but who are also holy and have special holy spells only they can use. Not only that, but they can bless themselves and other sacred units, with the exact blessing being something you design with your God at the start and depending on which magic they knew from the start. For example, you can make them faster, stronger, more resilient, awe-inspiring to look at (so that the weak-willed enemies hesitate to stab them), charge their weapons with lightning or ignite them with fire... A notable meme-tactic from older parts was the 'explosive cats bless'. As Mictlan, the Aztec-inspired nation, you can summon ozelotl, which are basically flying jaguars. Ozelotls are sacred, meaning you can bless them - in this case, with a special enchantment that makes them explode on death. They then can fly directly into the depths of the enemy ranks, and... you can probably guess what happens next.
They also added a bunch of Big Wacky Spells in the lategame research tree this time around, like Lost Land, a massive Water+Earth spell that outright sinks a coastal province and turns it into a sea province, killing half the population in the process along with 50% of the units in the province that aren't amphibious (the others presumably run away in time).
Another thing that makes Dominions lore so good is that even when the nations in question disappear, their legacy sometimes endures in some way. For the example you used, the Gigantes of Mekone: Yeah they get sodded and turn into savage tyrants in the Middle Age and destructive monsters in the Late Age, but a remnant of their Early Age selves still survives in the Middle Age. A few who escaped the Celestial Power's curse settled on the Black Korkyra on the Phaeacian archipalego and formed an alliance with the decendants of the Colossi, who are/were Machakan humans of great stature. So they sometimes show up to provide aid to Phaeacia with a surviving Lochos-A 'generic' Gigante commander from Early Age Mekone- and their retinue of uncursed Mekoneans who-while having lost their gleaming armaments save for the Lochos themselves- are still pretty dang strong. A lot of the random heroes you get for each nation also provide even more lore that explains how their nation either evolved or devolved with the passing of the Ages.
The nice thing about the graphics, is the game is infinitely moddable without a ton of effort. If you can make something half decent looking in pixel art, you can make new units, new spells, whatever.
This really reminds me of "Songs of Syx". Not so much in it's specific gameplay, but in that it's clearly been made with love, because the focus have obviously been on fun mechanics rather than flashy graphics. Lots of big game studios seem to have pushed their focus into making games look good rather than actually play well, and it's nice to see indie devs who aren't afraid to go the other way.
HOLY SHIT, YOU FOUND IT While I’ve been playing Dominions (and CoE) since the last year of Dom 5, I’ve yet to play against human players, but I’d gladly try taking over the early ages with an endless tide of Onis led by some old man that proclaims to be a god, fulfill my necromancer fantasy in the Middle Ages with lizard people, and turtle in the cozy caverns in all ages as Agartha as I turn off the sun (or make a new one) again and again and again. (Also after reading the MANUAL I’m on the bandwagon of “waiting for Trade & Taint to come out some day”)

Hell one game I had legions of undead and got smited to help and back cause the ai commander and smite undead and even with my legions couldn't reach them before he smited the fuck out of my commanders and since the commander falls the undead just crumps up and dies not even Fighting back so so I'm watching armies just turn to dust in like yooooo
I am more of a Conquest of Elysium enjoyer for single player myself. It is crazy fun, the entire world being hostile as fuck alleviates the AI factions having a bad AI.
Try Conquest of Elysium 5 then. It’s made by the same developers in the same world, but as a quasi rogue like. (With armies, but you don’t need to order them around) However, also watch a review on it before purchasing.
Glamour is mostly illusions, madness and sleeping spells, with the Fair Folk being it’s summons There’s also a Glamour spell that makes a commander face against EVERY UNIT IT HAS KILLED at once in a dream. If they die in the dream they’ll die for real. THAT’s death by glamour B)
Finally ! Why only enjoying some glam-metal when you can used to end lifes with it too ? They wont survive the RATT-solos . They are way too good to pass up !
@@minibotas9496 Notable thing about Glamour magic is 'false damage', which is damage that is not real but so realistic that it makes the target think it's real and die from illusory wounds. That is, unless they're very good at seeing through illusions or doubting them. You can also make your troops look so awe-inspiring that weak-willed enemy soldiers will hesitate to stab them.

Shaman curse someone, and "cursed" person believe in their cursedness so hard that they become sick, dont eat anything and die from that. Later people invented doubt and become immune to that shit, but still its common thing to feel gut-wrenching discomfort when you may be sick or poisoned but you dont know for sure (and can interpret that discomfort as a proof that yes you are sick/poisoned) humans literally too smart to their own good lol
Been playing this series since Dom3. Good times. It promises a mind boggling amount of micromanagement so you will have to be into that. Lots of mods too. Essentially race packs, I recall the whole menagerie of Warhammer Fantasy, the same for Warhammer 40K because lol why not send in power armour space marines with bolters, WW2 human nations with guns n tanks, World of Warcraft races, it just goes on n on.

It really starts to get fun once you know enough to start coming up with your own new unique strategies. This is a game that rewards creativity. Basically your imagination is the limit.
I remember playing Dominions 1 twenty something years ago. Do they still have the undead faction that could march underwater and constantly make endless free units? They were my favorite.
I want to share a story about this game so I play as middle age China (Tienchi) a few turn in and I found myself a province with lizard mage (lizard mage have 1 astral path) and since in game there is a mechanic that an astral/blood mage can use a communion spell (basically you use other people energy to cast spell) and since China has a pretty good old ass grandpa mage I recruit bunch of lizards to be a battery (fans word for communion slaves) and make them follow an old ass man to battle and this is actually a pretty good strategy
highly recommend playing multiplayer, its where this game really shines. there are several discords dedicated to organizing mp games and its really easy/smooth to get started
Another soul saved by the Church of Illwinter! I always like to demonstrate the depth of Dominions by mentioning the “Wish” spell… Upon casting it, you are prompted to just type in anything you want… Thank about that.
When the budget went into mechanics and not graphics, i miss those days. So many realistic looking but otherwise dead world games now, especially AAA titles.
Summon giant frog. Give it human-level intelligence with Gift of Reason. Name it Pepe. Make it your prophet. Teach it to use blood magic. Give it a flying ship and a retinue of troops. Fly around the map causing random demon-enabled shenanigans.
there are some high lvl community mp campaigns that takes months to end, in which the experienced players know how to use specific spells to counter another army composition; game's crazy man!
One of the greatest multiplayer experiences i ever had, i started on dominions 3, played 4 and never got to 5, i am so stocked to think we have a new one coming!
It's a game that has an atrocious UI, terrible graphics, not particularly impressive sound, a premium price tag, and yes, you actually should read that 444 page manual. But it's also the single most detailed and impressive game series I've ever played. I've been playing it since Dominions 2. Back then, you had to order it over the phone, and they'd mail you the game manual with a CD-ROM tucked inside. They refused to sell it as a download, because they _really_ wanted you to have the manual. And, I dunno, I guess they didn't think people would read a PDF. They've apparently lightened up a bit on that whole online sales thing. I think Dominions 4 was the first game to actually be on Steam. But honestly, I'm surprised anyone plays this series who didn't already play earlier versions of it. It's the kind of thing you have to be a crazy person to actually want to play. But wow is it fun. I imagine it's a bit like playing Warhammer, but you don't have to buy and paint a bunch of miniatures, and the fact that a computer calculates everything for you means the game rules can be endlessly complicated. The complexity is where the game gets really fun. If you're into that sort of thing. Because there are so many options in so many different game systems, your creativity is absolutely boundless. Early on you're just smashing ordinary armies against each other, and your formations and tactics might give you an edge. By late game, you can have individual units that can completely annihilate entire armies single-handedly, just because of the right combination of magic items, magic spells, stats, and battle scripts. And there's not just one way to do that. There's not just twenty ways to do that. There's hundreds, maybe thousands of different combinations of choices you can make to create devastatingly powerful armies, or one-creature armies. And that's without even getting into things like using powerful rituals to destroy opposing armies without needing to commit your own forces to the battle at all. Or assassinating enemy commanders so the armies they lead become useless and just run away. You can win just by scaring your enemies. You can win just by making your enemies too tired to fight. You can win by cursing and spreading diseases among your enemies so much that they become utterly worthless in a fight against you because they've got so many stacking wounds and illnesses. On and on it goes. You can purposefully lose battles, but wear down your enemies in an attrition war using certain spells and tactics to make it harder and harder for the enemy to keep going until you're ready to crush them. This is a game where you can tell your own stories, limited only by your own imagination and your encyclopedic knowledge of the game's many systems. For somebody like me, that scratches an itch like no other game can. The game has basically been the same as it always has been, from the first version. They have just been re-releasing it every few years with a new number, but each time they add in some new nations, new monsters, new spells, new magic items, etc., and usually they seem to add in some new game systems to make it even more complex. If it was any other game, I'd complain that these updates should just be expansion packs, and not cost as much as a new game. But instead I buy it anyway. Because I _know_ I'll get a thousand hours out of the game, easy.

I've been playing Dominions since it's third release. Each new Dominions game is a mainstay on my hard drive, never to be uninstalled until the next release.
Been playing since Dominions 2. Back then you had to call them up on the phone, or mail them a check with an order form. Then they'd send you the very thick manual, with a CD-ROM slipped inside the pages.
I'm always happy to see Dominions get any kind of coverage. It's a great game. Solinum Infernum just came out, too, and it's a great MP strategy experience.

May I steer you to two of the most meme worthy factions? In early age Malachaka and Lankara. Totemic african tribes, and Buddah/hindu Monkies. Middle age Ind is also just a bag full of madness. You haven't lived until you slap some magical artifacts on an 8 foot tall lion-tribesman who is carrying nothing but the artifacts you give him, his club, and cape, and watch him diving into a mosh-pit of japanese demons and emerge from the other side with a three digit bodycount.
This game feels like a game of crusader kings, but each individual fight is a game of Total war hammer, and each unit fighting is playing a game of dnd

If that would be all, it would be worth it's price. But there is more. Based on previous dominions games, you can expect patches coming for several years, sometimes including new nations. In Patches, no DLC needed. Oh and there are mods. So many mods. Including Nations based on factions from those heroes of might and magic games you missed out on (seriously, heroes of might and magic 3 from gog plus the HD Mod or Horn of the Abyss is a must). Oh and the correct minimum distance between two fortifications is one province, since they only suck half the ressources from neighbouring provinces. ;)
The file size being small compared to newer games is probably due to the graphics of the game, because if the sheer volumetric amount of content in the game we're modernized to today's normal 4x graphics, you would need at least a mountain to store the data

Oh the memories of spending half a night to create the perfect script for the climactic battle, only to have the crux of your battle plan - your mages - wiped out by an enemy spell on round one, because you didn't have a counter for it. I think that was Dom3? Or 4? Good to see they're still going.
If anyone doesn't know, you can check out Perun (the Defence news and documentary style youtuber, yeah) and he has a TON of old Dominions 5 content wish great strategies and playthroughs and stuff. And hopefully he'll do Dom 6 stuff too now that it's come out.

You can play as the Nephilim and research lategame magic to release the Fallen Angels from their prison, which is pretty funky. Or you can use Blood magic to crossbreed humans with monsters, with the results dependent on how Lucky your god is. A powerful Nature mage can cast Transformation, turning him into a random animal (good luck increases the odds of a good body), while allowing him to keep his magic abilities. So he can become a Giant Bull or Ogre with magical powers! You can cast Burden of Time, which makes everyone age decades every month, leading to the entire world just dying off. There's just so many cool things you can do in Dominions, and a fair few of them are even viable in multiplayer. It's a lot of fun. The community's also really chill and supportive. Tons of modding potential, too!

You can also play as viking elves or their enemy frost and fire giants. There is a nation entirely made of monkeys. You can play as a lovecraftian horror with R'lye, which is fun now that there are new spells to sink the land into the sea. There is a nation of dog headed people, and one that is the scariest monster of all, women!

Srsly though, Cavemen are trash but they're dangerous specifically to big, lumbering brutes that can't dodge and rely on high armor for protection. Their attacks are inaccurate but with their high strength they will pierce the armor of giants and such quite easily. To deal with them, swarm them with smaller units or archers.
Archers are basic strategy, you should always have some. Or a wizard casting shit from afar.
Also, be very careful of attacking cavemen in the caves, since they can see in the dark and you most likely do not.

Dude just decided to up and go on a 3 month walk on the other side of the continent and came up with a whole ass strategy game.
Honestly this story from the manual remains a pretty big inspiration for me on what sort of experiences matter in life.
Fun fact: for the goat event, if you put a couple goats on a stealth commander you can send them into enemy territory, thereby using tactical dragon airstrikes against your enemies.

My favorite detail from this series is the bear claw talisman and cat charm. On top of their normal stat-bonuses, there's this semi-hidden effect of them masculinizing/feminizing the wearer.
So if you're tired of having your important male characters seduced away by female enemies, you can feminize those men by putting cat charms on them. However, they do then turn gay and can be seduced by male seducers, but male seducers are often rarer.
There's a lot of small details like that which can end up being relevant, such as the fact that vampires can't cross water despite having flying or the lizardmen being cold-blooded. It might seem like favor but I keep being surprised by how often things like that actually turn out to be relevant.
Imagine sissifying your commander to avoid seduction only to have him kidnapped by an Ermor satyr to an orgy xdddd

I like this review because it vindicates a view I've had for a long time: I've always been saying that the standout feature of Dominions is its fluff and emergent storytelling potential, and you don't need to be a hardcore strategy game enthusiast (which I take the creator isn't, on account of confessing to not having played the genre classics) to enjoy that part of the game. You can just summon tarrasques and break dead titans free from Tartarus or wish for more wishes and simply have a good time exploring the possibilities, even if what you're doing isn't necessarily winning in the most efficient manner.

Ah yes, the game where the mechanics have mechanics. With the crazy spells where you can always know more, discover more interactions. For example, your fountain may be unable to move, but with the right path and research it might teleport. It's your pretender, so you get to choose far more magic path than any usual caster, with spells like invunurability, reconstruction, etc. making it impossible to kill via normal means. That strategy is what the community knows as a monolith drop, where a pretender teleports into an enemy army, laughs with far too high armor at any attempts to be destroyed and murderes your troops. Need to know a bit about stats and spells to make it work, and there is always more to try out.
One thing that the review failed to mention was the 'sacred' units. You see, each nation usually has at least one elite unit that's considered especially holy to their people, some kinda paladin or guardian of a holy tomb. You can also hire special commanders, priests, who are not necessarily very good leaders, but who are also holy and have special holy spells only they can use. Not only that, but they can bless themselves and other sacred units, with the exact blessing being something you design with your God at the start and depending on which magic they knew from the start. For example, you can make them faster, stronger, more resilient, awe-inspiring to look at (so that the weak-willed enemies hesitate to stab them), charge their weapons with lightning or ignite them with fire...
A notable meme-tactic from older parts was the 'explosive cats bless'. As Mictlan, the Aztec-inspired nation, you can summon ozelotl, which are basically flying jaguars. Ozelotls are sacred, meaning you can bless them - in this case, with a special enchantment that makes them explode on death. They then can fly directly into the depths of the enemy ranks, and... you can probably guess what happens next.

The funniest thing for me is how one of the best God chassis in the entire game is the Demilich, which is literally just a skull

They also added a bunch of Big Wacky Spells in the lategame research tree this time around, like Lost Land, a massive Water+Earth spell that outright sinks a coastal province and turns it into a sea province, killing half the population in the process along with 50% of the units in the province that aren't amphibious (the others presumably run away in time).
Another thing that makes Dominions lore so good is that even when the nations in question disappear, their legacy sometimes endures in some way.
For the example you used, the Gigantes of Mekone: Yeah they get sodded and turn into savage tyrants in the Middle Age and destructive monsters in the Late Age, but a remnant of their Early Age selves still survives in the Middle Age.
A few who escaped the Celestial Power's curse settled on the Black Korkyra on the Phaeacian archipalego and formed an alliance with the decendants of the Colossi, who are/were Machakan humans of great stature.
So they sometimes show up to provide aid to Phaeacia with a surviving Lochos-A 'generic' Gigante commander from Early Age Mekone- and their retinue of uncursed Mekoneans who-while having lost their gleaming armaments save for the Lochos themselves- are still pretty dang strong.
A lot of the random heroes you get for each nation also provide even more lore that explains how their nation either evolved or devolved with the passing of the Ages.

Dominions is so underrated that it is a sin how overlooked it is. I think the graphics are part of it's charm.
The nice thing about the graphics, is the game is infinitely moddable without a ton of effort. If you can make something half decent looking in pixel art, you can make new units, new spells, whatever.
This really reminds me of "Songs of Syx". Not so much in it's specific gameplay, but in that it's clearly been made with love, because the focus have obviously been on fun mechanics rather than flashy graphics. Lots of big game studios seem to have pushed their focus into making games look good rather than actually play well, and it's nice to see indie devs who aren't afraid to go the other way.

While I’ve been playing Dominions (and CoE) since the last year of Dom 5, I’ve yet to play against human players, but I’d gladly try taking over the early ages with an endless tide of Onis led by some old man that proclaims to be a god, fulfill my necromancer fantasy in the Middle Ages with lizard people, and turtle in the cozy caverns in all ages as Agartha as I turn off the sun (or make a new one) again and again and again.
(Also after reading the MANUAL I’m on the bandwagon of “waiting for Trade & Taint to come out some day”)

Hell one game I had legions of undead and got smited to help and back cause the ai commander and smite undead and even with my legions couldn't reach them before he smited the fuck out of my commanders and since the commander falls the undead just crumps up and dies not even Fighting back so so I'm watching armies just turn to dust in like yooooo
I am more of a Conquest of Elysium enjoyer for single player myself. It is crazy fun, the entire world being hostile as fuck alleviates the AI factions having a bad AI.

@@minibotas9496 Notable thing about Glamour magic is 'false damage', which is damage that is not real but so realistic that it makes the target think it's real and die from illusory wounds. That is, unless they're very good at seeing through illusions or doubting them.
You can also make your troops look so awe-inspiring that weak-willed enemy soldiers will hesitate to stab them.

Shaman curse someone, and "cursed" person believe in their cursedness so hard that they become sick, dont eat anything and die from that. Later people invented doubt and become immune to that shit, but still its common thing to feel gut-wrenching discomfort when you may be sick or poisoned but you dont know for sure (and can interpret that discomfort as a proof that yes you are sick/poisoned)

Been playing this series since Dom3. Good times. It promises a mind boggling amount of micromanagement so you will have to be into that. Lots of mods too. Essentially race packs, I recall the whole menagerie of Warhammer Fantasy, the same for Warhammer 40K because lol why not send in power armour space marines with bolters, WW2 human nations with guns n tanks, World of Warcraft races, it just goes on n on.

It really starts to get fun once you know enough to start coming up with your own new unique strategies. This is a game that rewards creativity. Basically your imagination is the limit.

I want to share a story about this game so I play as middle age China (Tienchi) a few turn in and I found myself a province with lizard mage (lizard mage have 1 astral path) and since in game there is a mechanic that an astral/blood mage can use a communion spell (basically you use other people energy to cast spell) and since China has a pretty good old ass grandpa mage I recruit bunch of lizards to be a battery (fans word for communion slaves) and make them follow an old ass man to battle and this is actually a pretty good strategy
highly recommend playing multiplayer, its where this game really shines. there are several discords dedicated to organizing mp games and its really easy/smooth to get started

One of the greatest multiplayer experiences i ever had, i started on dominions 3, played 4 and never got to 5, i am so stocked to think we have a new one coming!
It's a game that has an atrocious UI, terrible graphics, not particularly impressive sound, a premium price tag, and yes, you actually should read that 444 page manual. But it's also the single most detailed and impressive game series I've ever played. I've been playing it since Dominions 2. Back then, you had to order it over the phone, and they'd mail you the game manual with a CD-ROM tucked inside. They refused to sell it as a download, because they _really_ wanted you to have the manual. And, I dunno, I guess they didn't think people would read a PDF.
They've apparently lightened up a bit on that whole online sales thing. I think Dominions 4 was the first game to actually be on Steam. But honestly, I'm surprised anyone plays this series who didn't already play earlier versions of it. It's the kind of thing you have to be a crazy person to actually want to play. But wow is it fun. I imagine it's a bit like playing Warhammer, but you don't have to buy and paint a bunch of miniatures, and the fact that a computer calculates everything for you means the game rules can be endlessly complicated.
The complexity is where the game gets really fun. If you're into that sort of thing. Because there are so many options in so many different game systems, your creativity is absolutely boundless. Early on you're just smashing ordinary armies against each other, and your formations and tactics might give you an edge. By late game, you can have individual units that can completely annihilate entire armies single-handedly, just because of the right combination of magic items, magic spells, stats, and battle scripts. And there's not just one way to do that. There's not just twenty ways to do that. There's hundreds, maybe thousands of different combinations of choices you can make to create devastatingly powerful armies, or one-creature armies. And that's without even getting into things like using powerful rituals to destroy opposing armies without needing to commit your own forces to the battle at all. Or assassinating enemy commanders so the armies they lead become useless and just run away. You can win just by scaring your enemies. You can win just by making your enemies too tired to fight. You can win by cursing and spreading diseases among your enemies so much that they become utterly worthless in a fight against you because they've got so many stacking wounds and illnesses. On and on it goes. You can purposefully lose battles, but wear down your enemies in an attrition war using certain spells and tactics to make it harder and harder for the enemy to keep going until you're ready to crush them.
This is a game where you can tell your own stories, limited only by your own imagination and your encyclopedic knowledge of the game's many systems. For somebody like me, that scratches an itch like no other game can.
The game has basically been the same as it always has been, from the first version. They have just been re-releasing it every few years with a new number, but each time they add in some new nations, new monsters, new spells, new magic items, etc., and usually they seem to add in some new game systems to make it even more complex. If it was any other game, I'd complain that these updates should just be expansion packs, and not cost as much as a new game. But instead I buy it anyway. Because I _know_ I'll get a thousand hours out of the game, easy.

This is the type of game that feels like those catalysts for the MC of an isekai story to be sucked into after p[laying this game for 100000 sigmillion hours and randomly quitting for 2 years or finding/downloading a new version of the game.

I've been playing Dominions since it's third release. Each new Dominions game is a mainstay on my hard drive, never to be uninstalled until the next release.
Been playing since Dominions 2. Back then you had to call them up on the phone, or mail them a check with an order form. Then they'd send you the very thick manual, with a CD-ROM slipped inside the pages.

I'm always happy to see Dominions get any kind of coverage. It's a great game. Solinum Infernum just came out, too, and it's a great MP strategy experience.

If that would be all, it would be worth it's price. But there is more. Based on previous dominions games, you can expect patches coming for several years, sometimes including new nations. In Patches, no DLC needed. Oh and there are mods. So many mods. Including Nations based on factions from those heroes of might and magic games you missed out on (seriously, heroes of might and magic 3 from gog plus the HD Mod or Horn of the Abyss is a must). Oh and the correct minimum distance between two fortifications is one province, since they only suck half the ressources from neighbouring provinces. ;)
Yeah, modding is something that he didn't mention, but wow, the modding you can do with this game is pretty much the best there is in anything.

The file size being small compared to newer games is probably due to the graphics of the game, because if the sheer volumetric amount of content in the game we're modernized to today's normal 4x graphics, you would need at least a mountain to store the data

I liked Dominions 6 when it came out 18 years ago as Dominions 3.
If anyone doesn't know, you can check out Perun (the Defence news and documentary style youtuber, yeah) and he has a TON of old Dominions 5 content wish great strategies and playthroughs and stuff. And hopefully he'll do Dom 6 stuff too now that it's come out.
