Imagine if Henry stopping in the tunnel wasn't an actual fear of the rain, but he was trying to stop the shame of being a poor steamer. The dismissal of his issues by the others most likely made him feel ashamed of his design, and he used the vain facade to cover it up. At least he would be controlling the view of him as a vain engine afraid if spoiling his paint, rather than being teased for faults he couldn't control.
The Thomas engines looking back can really help to teach children many things. Henry's sad theme comes up a few different times for different reasons. First he's being punished for being disobedient to the fat controller by not pulling his train. Then he suffers with an invisible condition making it hard for him to work, while the other engine accuse him of being lazy to get out of work. Then he gets into an accident that wasn't his fault. There's comfort knowing he couldn't have prevented the accident, but the pain and hurt is there all the same, even when you do everything right. There's alot of lessons to learn, about expressing our emotions, and the different sources of pain we can feel, from ourselves and our actions, from our peers, and from the world around us.
Henry’s driver and fireman had jumped clear before the crash but Henry laid dazed and surprised. The fat controller had come to see him. “The signal was down sir” said Henry. Breaks my heart every time. Amazing rendition ❤️
At least Sir Topham Hatt assured Henry it wasn't because of him or his crew that he got into an accident. Unlike that other episode where Henry pulled the Flying Kipper into a flooded area because of the high tides. In that one Henry was blamed for something beyond his control, whereas here he wasn't.
Honestly the simple and short Henry theme always has been in my mind since 1st hearing it as a child watching episodes like "Flying Kipper" and "The sad story of henry" on VHS. It's been a favorite of mine from the classic series for years. This extended instrumental cover is probably one of the best I've ever heard in years. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was fighting tears. It made my depressed past flash through my mind all throughout this. Absolutely cracking job and I do look forward to using this in future projects. With proper credits of course.
It's the bayou crash, saw that one back in Sept and wouldn't know of this if you didn't have it in there. And I unexpectedly needed it then too. Thanks t-bolt, I know you had a lot going on too
Henry didn’t get treated right, having problems ever since he was born/built, getting kinda bullied by the little tank engine and the red tender engine, getting bricked up without any coal or water or what so ever, getting damage by pulling the fish train
He reminds me of Smudger from the Duke episodes, despite only appearing in one. It may only be a fan theory but the main reason Smudger didn't function properly was because he was rushed in his building process, and there was either no time or parts to get him built the way he was supposed to. The main difference is while Henry was eventually given a proper smoke box, Smudger was turned into a generator. The two weren't built properly from the start, and it led to problems for both them and their respective railways.
@@InstrumentManiac Poor Henry. Maybe Henry really stopped in a tunnel for being afraid of being a failed engine. That he might be scrapped if he didn't do anything. Maybe he felt so ashamed of being a bad steamer. 😔 😟 🙁

bruhhhh getting me emotional over a big green train tonight also ive never really seen a bass flute in action before!!! i used to think the alto was my favourite sound, but as always, the bass vers. of an instrument always surpasses (bass trombonist here lmao). I think i'm in love with that tone colour my gosh. Beautiful orchestration, as ever!
It might be the melodramatic side of me - which is big, with me being an opera geek AND a singer - but this theme definitely crossed the line with the tragic. The quiet kind of tragic, where one is so desperate that one doesn't even have the strength to utter a word while one's world falls apart. I loved how the cellos set the general atmosphere and functioned as kind of foundation for the piece, and then came the harp weeping the middle layer with her ostinato. And then the double basses with their dark, tragic core of impotence while the poor train got walled in (it that even appropriate for children? It's terrible!). I'd say this enhanced interest in string orchestration has born its fruits. Great job, as usual.
Ahh great observations idraote!! It's fun to try out these different instrument arrangements and see what you can come up with. Originally i was going to add violin but I thought keeping it more restrained might showcase the bass flute better. Thanks for listening!
Built in 1919, Henry the Green Engine's earlier years were nothing easy. Built with by stolen design's from Sir Nigel Gresley (1876-1941), CME of the GNR on that time, he was a faulty steamer having to rely on luck to be able to produce enough steam, and imagine being regarded as a failure and having to hide from most of the world at the same time at a very young age? 1922, he got purchased by Topham Hatt I (1880-1956), who was at that time the director of the NWR, but things didn't end very well as Henry would stop at a tunnel and would be left there for quite some time after they failed to get him out, and although he was let out in Spring/Summer 1923, his stay on the tunnel surely affected his future performance. Henry got into some trouble during the late 1920s to early 1930s, from being surprised by an elephant to dramatically striking against fetching his own trains, but his condition remained the same. And when he seemed to be getting better through his use of Welsh coal, he suffered an horrible accident on early-1935 that left him highly damaged. This is the sad story of Henry's early life, but despite his difficulties, he proved he could work as hard as he could to try to get his job done. However, we all know it had a good ending, don't we?
@@InstrumentManiac Part of what makes it work so well is that you take your time establishing the mood within the piece. As a result, 1:12 hits particularly hard, and it gives me chills.

Christ. I never thought I’d cry when listening to this.
Quick edit: thanks for the heart man, keep up your excellent work!
Beautifully done, love that melancholy adaptation with the bass flute! Now I want a bass flute 😂
This was absolutely beyond words with how amazing! This is definitely my favourite out of what you've done so far. Keep up the brilliant work!
Wow, thank you!
I haven’t heard a lot of people do this so props
This is beautiful bro. I'll admit, I wasn't too excited for this one, but you did an incredibly impressive job. Out of all the ones you've done, this is my favourite :p Gratz my guy
Ah thanks man that means a lot! Glad you liked the end result :)
This make me think of an alternate timeline where Henry was sent for scrap
Hes already been scrapped for season 25.

@Samantha Kamman that is a really good fanfic
@Samantha Kamman its perfect
George Carlin: Poor Henry had no steam to answer, his fire had gone out, soot and dirt from the tunnel had spoiled his lovely green paint and red stripes anyway, how long do you think Henry will stay in the tunnel before he overcomes his fear of the rain and decides to journey out again?
Ringo Starr: But I think he deserved his punishment, don’t you?
Poor Henry had no steam left to answer, his fire had gone out. Soot and dirt from the tunnel had spoiled his lovely green paint with red stripes. He wondered if he would ever be allowed to pull trains again.
But I think he deserved his punishment…don’t you?
I love your adaptation! Such beautiful string and harp reharmonization! Bass flute worked so well with it it sounds amazing! Yay bass flute! :)
Thanks for listening Brandon, glad you liked the Bass flute!
I heard this at least three times in three History in the Dark videos, and again in Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Production's remake on the 1993 Big Bayou Cannot train crash.
This actually made me cry
That was so beautiful it made me shed a tear literally dude you play excellently
Thanks for listening!
I need to know if people can use your music for projects, ITS SO GOOD
As long as you give credit, link to the video & link to my channel you're more than welcome to :)
@@InstrumentManiac What about adaptations?
Wow, I really love the sound of that bass flute!
Right!? Such a great buttery sound
Nice, sad,Beautiful and depressing all of that make these amazing music
Far out man that was intense and beautiful. I've become a huge fan! I love Thomas themes, and I love people who put their talent and soul into music! Keep up the amazing work!!!!!!
Thanks Funky! These are a blast to make but I only keep doing it because of awesome ppl like yourself that are kind enough to watch ^_^
I’m just glad Henry got more happy over the series. Especially when he had his woods.
bruhhhh getting me emotional over a big green train tonight
also ive never really seen a bass flute in action before!!! i used to think the alto was my favourite sound, but as always, the bass vers. of an instrument always surpasses (bass trombonist here lmao). I think i'm in love with that tone colour my gosh.
Beautiful orchestration, as ever!
Thanks Rebecca! I agree, I feel like the bass instrument always wins out for me with the coolness factor 😂
This is my theme whenever someone sad happens to me.
This premiere video is perfect for me to hear because I'm sad now that I missed watching this video :(
"He wondered if he would ever be allowed to pull trains again. But I think he deserved his punishment. Don't you?"
So cool, yet so sad! Love your bass flute. I have an Armstrong Alto from the '60s.
So cool to see the expanding collection , Now you can take out a mortgage and buy a Double/Contrabass Flute !
I gotta pay this one off first 😂
Are you trying to make me cry, because this has so much emotion
This sounds a lot like the Once Upon A Time theme! Wonderful work!
On this theme I almost CRIED yours is more sadness *so sad I almost cried
Very creative choice to use the bass flute rather than the regular flute. Nice work!
Thanks Nicholas!
@@InstrumentManiac Part of what makes it work so well is that you take your time establishing the mood within the piece. As a result, 1:12 hits particularly hard, and it gives me chills.
This reminded me always of the scrap yards with them just waiting to be cut up
Very emotional theme.
If I may vouch for a personal favourite, Harvey the Crane Engine’s theme from series 6.
It has a gentle, clock-like rhythm that befits Harvey’s soft-spoken, kindly character.
I'll check it out!
You made me cry! Amazing version!
The rain will spoil my lovely green paint with red stripes
