- Are mermaid tails dangerous? Learn how to swim safely in a Mermaid Tail and how to be safe as a Mermaid in this video! A lot of people have been drowning in Lake Michigan lately, and many have been getting sick from swimming in the lakes too. I don't want you to drown, I don't want you to get sick, and I DON'T want you to be in any danger whatsoever! 😟 This video is intended to give you 5 easy to understand tips on how to safely be a mermaid or a merman. This video is for ANYONE who wants to be a mermaid or swim in a mermaid tail. Many of the tips will be useful to those who do not swim in mermaid tails as well. And as a matter of fact... this video is not just for inexperienced mermaids, it is also something that even seasoned professional mermaids should watch.
In addition to giving basic advice for those who are just learning how to swim in a mermaid tail, this video will give you advice on how to swim safely in the open water (and in swimming pools) and how to be smart about the situations you get yourself into.
It can be easy to get carried away by the joy of being a mermaid or being in the water that you forget to keep your safety and health in mind. Please take this as a reminder to take care of yourself and to be careful as you go about swimming and enjoying water.

I really appreciate this. I’ve been mermaiding for awhile now in Ludington. Sadly, four or five people have drowned right off of the public beach in the past two weeks. Mermaid or not, remembering how to stay safe when swimming is so so important. My heart goes out to all of the families who’ve lost someone to the lake.

Yes indeed! And lately it has been a big problem in the Lake Michigan. So many people have been drowning in the lake because of strong currents. And many people have been swimming on beaches with EXTREMELY high E. Coli levels and then getting sick from it. It is so sad to hear about! 😟

I'm not an experienced mermaid yet, but I am a seasoned cosplayer, so I feel qualified to HEAVILY back the "never be alone" tip. It's always important to have a handler/pack mule/cosplay boyfriend/girlfriend, not only because they make your life a lot easier, but also because they can help you if you ever feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable. Unfortunately, there are people to attend conventions who do not have good intentions, who do not understand cosplay (and mermaiding) is not consent, and who fail to respect your personal boundaries. There are a few times where I have been caught in a situation where someone was making very inappropriate comments or touching me without consent, but when you have a buddy, it's much easier to get out of that situation. 🖤 🖤
YES! This totally applies to cosplay too. It is ridiculous how some people act around those "in costume," or even in Alternative Fashion. Always have a buddy for sure... in the water, as a mermaid, or ANYWHERE else. Especially when you stand out in a crowd ♥

Love this video! Always good to be safe especially us Michiganders with the thunderstorms that pop by every now and then. 😶 Also glad that you talked about the "knowing your limits" sometime we just get too excited and it can blur your ability to stop yourself.
Also will you be in the Michigan Renaissance Fair this year? My boyfriend and I are going and now that I don't have my 4 other siblings to take everywhere I can finally see the mermaids. 🤣 I have so much family that we used to only be able to go and see what the majority of the family picked. Sadly they never wanted to see the Mermaids. 😑

I’m just doing an extreme amount of research while trying to figure out if I want to get a tail and do parties with mermaids don’t mind me...
What would be your thoughts about being a mermaid in a bathtub? For relaxation purpose
In a silicone mermaid tail? Pain. Lots of pain! 😬
But it might not be too bad in a fabric tail, if you enjoy baths.

Another tip be aware who could be behind you Your fin can accidentally hit someone in the face and can hurt!
