    For those of you who are wondering, a lot of the things he went over with me didn’t make it onto the video. A lot of people are saying that the exhaust extension may be the problem. That was the first thing I thought of, but I verified with multiple people at Woodmizer who said that is most likely not it. As for water getting in the exhaust, we had it covered!

    • @scottsoper
      @scottsoper 2 місяці тому +2

      Did you run the machine anyway keeping an eye on the temperature and oil pressure?
      I would still try it without the exhaust extension because that was the thing that changed from not having a light to having a light. However you are correct, I am just grabbing at straws hopping something will make sense or have the correct effect. Is the exhaust hard to take off just to see what happens?
      Where is the accelerator censer listed in the code? Is it where we can poke at it to see what happens? Maybe it just needs cleaning? Or maybe grounding is loose?

      Thanks, I was going to say something about the extended exhaust that needed a flap. Glad you guys are now aware. People also forget that there's a good deal of moisture in the air (humidity)(not relative humidity-it would take quite a few of your relatives sweating around it to do any damage. Ha!) even without the rain. Actually, when you first mentioned it about the exhaust extension, a lot of people were mentioning a flap over the end. But we all get busy and forget. Happy for Em. Have a good night, people!

      They’re not dumb, but they’re young and are dealing with a different machine than they had. They checked it out, tried to reboot it, called the factory, the only thing I would have done is to check all the fluid levels. They did pretty much exactly what they should have done, for what they paid for that machine, the company should send a tech out there and figure out what is wrong with their machine. The tech she talked to said he call back if he could find something out, he should call her back no matter what. He didn’t help her at all with the problems they’re having, what happens if it blows up, he told her to use it. Good thing she has that on video.

    Take the exhaust extension off. Unplug the computer for 5 minutes, plug it back in. If the light is off, fire up the blade and cut a log. I'm willing to bet you have a backpressure issue caused by the exhaust that the computer is unable to adjust for.

    Hi Em. Just a thought. That upward facing exhaust pipe gets water in it when it rains. That could fill a cylinder with an open exhaust valve with water when there is a hard rain.
    And that can cause damage from mild to severe depending on the amount of water. You should have a flapper valve like the big tractor trucks and other outdoor equipment with vertical exhaust have. Good luck with the mill. If it's runs good now most likely no water damage has been done. Love your videos. Keep them coming.

    As a Motorcycle mechanic, when you change the exhaust it affects the back pressure to the engine , sensors will pick this up on modern engines, usually we have to re-jet the carb or adjust the timing. The computer doesn't like changes...make sure you explain what you did with the exhaust to the rep.....If you didn't already.

    • @marckimbrell4645

      It's not a motorcycle. These engines are designed to work in multiple types of operations, including tractors with a lot more extensive exhaust systems. As a DIESEL mechanic extending an exhaust on this particular engine would not have any effect on performance or back pressure unless there is an obstruction.

    One of the most interesting vids to-date. A lot of good suggestions offered. Warning lights/error codes often point you in the direction to troubleshoot but don’t give you the final result w/o testing the wire/circuit involved & checking against the parameters associated with it. Often times it can be a bad /loose/corroded ground. Thinking outside of the box (what has changed, ie excessive rain leading to wet connections) is good. As many noted, the exhaust extension would be suspect but could be totally coincidence. Let is know what ends up bing the cause!

    Love your channel and is always informative and fun to watch. I am not criticizing you but this particular video definitely highlights the problems we have in today's world with all of the new technologies across the board in literally every aspect of working folks' lives. From GPS auto-guided operations/equipment, things like your sawmill, and even into my profession of structural steel detailing/drafting. It has created an environment that pretty much anyone with a bit of brains and desire/need can become what is called a USER. Meaning anyone can be trained/taught how to operate the software, equipment, etc. but because everything is so automatic/assisted when problems pop up, they are screwed. An OPERATOR knows all they can about their particular job/profession and will have learned knowledge ongoing/expanding to know what to do to keep problems from happening and what to do if problems do arise.

    any cable connectors where the recent heavy rains might have soaked the connector? how does water drain out of your vertical exhaust extension? is there a small drainage hole at the elbow?

  • @digitalwoodshop
    @digitalwoodshop 2 місяці тому +1

    I have searched all the comments and 3 others believe it is a Cable Connector RAIN issue..... Some connector got rain soaked and it is possible that water or moisture entered the connector through the strain relief part of the plug. Hence the intermittent fault light. Likely the Serial Communication Buss between sensors and modules is dropping off or quitting to operate bringing up a strange code.
    I would remove and shake each connector you can that was exposed to the heavy rain and look for moisture. It may take installing a water proof wrap on exposed connectors to prevent this in the future. Or move up the timeline to build an enclosure over the mill. Lost cutting time on this video adds up and there will be more in the future. An enclosure will be well worth it. Retired Navy / Sony tech.

    Tier 4 can be very fussy. Not bad troubleshooting and not a bad tech on the other end of the line. Sometimes you just won't have a clear cut answer to the issue. Since it runs fine, I would as a test remove the exhaust extension. If the trouble resets and goes away, or can be cleared, then you an try to increase the diameter of the exhaust extension a size or two bigger (have a muffler shop neck down the end of a larger diameter pipe to fit with the existing pipe) than the existing exhaust pipe. This would reduce or eliminate a possible back pressure issue that the computer may not be able to handle. An indicated low voltage fault on a sensor is sometimes just a fault caused by a low battery or from removing the battery connections during servicing work. I could also be caused by a dirty or loose, wet, connection at the sensor or on the wire to the sensor. Sometimes maybe a "did you try turning it off and back on?" works. (like someone else mentioned - disconnect battery for 5 minutes then reconnect the battery and clear any faults).

    Having worked in aerospace mechanical design I can say with all the electronics and computer code that goes into things these days there's no shortage of "unintended consequences". Computers work on such low voltages and currents, the smallest thing out of limits makes what seems like totally unrelated things trigger. I use a washing machine on spin cycle to get excess water out of my surfing gear so it dries faster. One day it wouldn't unlock the lid & stopped spinning. I recalibrated it, ran diagnostics, looked up error codes and nothing. I was going to just set the gears to spin and hardwire a separate switch but looking at it I found a highly corroded motor start capacitor. (Mice had gotten in the surrounding structure & perhaps it was their pee that caused the corrosion but cleaning all that out did the trick. No code said anything about a capacitor problem. I'm surprised as new as that machine is they didn't immediately send someone out to solve the problem. BTW "Kaboom" cleaner is great for cleaning electrical connector corrosion and white vinegar removes rust too - just be sure to rinse them well with water before putting them together with some dielectric grease. Hope it gets solved quickly so you don't get too far behind!

    Coffee Cold? You should run down to Walmart and pick up a cold brew maker immediately! Ground coffee goes in then room temp water, then let soak in the fridge for 1 day. "Bodum Bean Cold Brew Press and Iced Coffee Maker" Great video btw

    A couple of thing;s. You have a cell phone so you can use the camera feature to show Woodmiser exactly what the console is showing. Also that you made exhaust modifications which could be causing the problem.

    I'd cover off an easy one and check/change the fuel filter. Also see if there is a secondary fuel filter to check. Running wide open like that the fuel supply must be up to spec both to run the engine and to maintain proper operating temperature.

    When you get fault codes on cars, you have to go in and clear them for let's say, the engine lamp to turn of. Since it's a CAN buss, and it said Low Voltage, again.. when that happens on cars .. usually it means that you have bad ground or a tiny short. Also, if some of the ECU unit's are driven by a battery and the charge of the battery is low, you can also get faults. Use an anti oxide spray (for electronics) on the connectors ... Just as an humble suggestion. And not knowing things is not the same as being dump 😉 Thanks for another interesting video.

    In the Automotive industry a flashing check light usually means there is a hard fault present. Meaning the fault issue is occurring right now. I do not know the Wood misers system, so, my info is generic. The fault history in the system should give direction to what the computer system is not happy about. That will give direction on how to pin point the issue. Not to be confused here, but, just because the fault reads throttle control, the ultimate issue could be many things. Not always a part failure. Go around your unit, and check every connection plug is locked tight.

    I have the same idea as alot of other viewers. Diesel engines have a certain amount of exhaust for a reason. You didn't have the problem until you added the extension . I'm old school and hate the computerization of everything.

    Just thought ... the connectors on the engine and remote unit... if you open them up look at the pins inside and look for green corrosion.. yeah its like brand new but if you feel comfortable opening them give them a look .. see if you see any problems anything loose or corroded or not right. and look at all the wiring harnesses for any damage, cuts, abrasions

    What stood out to me was the exhaust temp active fluctuations with the engine off. I would look at that extension you installed and check for a sensor that's malfunctioning. Not a woodmizr tech. Lol

  • @lmenascojr

    If the flashing starts before the engine is even started, and if it’s indicating an issue with the engine exhaust, then it’s most likely an issue with the sensor at the exhaust or the wire connected to the sensor (which is what my bet is, since apparently you made a modification to the exhaust). If it were an actual exhaust problem I would think the engine would have to be running for the exhaust sensor to get a valid reading, but a disconnected sensor or a bad sensor itself would start flashing as soon as you powered up the computer running the mill. If water got into the sensor connection, that too might cause it to give the false reading (shorts out the signal from the sensor).

      It sounds like adding the extension caused the exhaust to not move enough air (CO), and the ECU is reading the CO high, or heat. Why did you add an extension? (just curious. did I miss a vid?)

    A CAN buss ( closed area network) is a communication system that kinda works like an old fashioned telephone party line. Every one is on the same phone line. The micro processors (mini computers) throughout the mill each are responsible for a smaller certain task. There is a host master computer that is in charge on the line that polls these modules every now and then and asks, "hey guys hows it going?" "What's going on? If one of the mini computers or the master, is not seeing a programmed response to, or communication back from a command over a specified amount of time. You will get a "check engine" light. In your case a "check mill" light. This communication scheme happens millions of times a second. The same system is in your truck or car.

    I listened to the video again. at 16:50 he seems to be saying to run it. It is after all a rpm code but the engine is running at the desired rpm. I saw a engine temperature light/gauge but I did not see oil pressure. It is not likely you can hurt the machine as long as it is not too hot and has oil pressure. So run it till you can try it without the new pipe on there. Well that is not much help at 6:16PM however let us know what you do and what happens.
