People write books about how they went to heaven and saw Jesus, and they get best seller awards. I talk about how I went to Asgard and battled with the almighty Odin, and I get meds.

My wife had her throat cut in a robbery many years ago when she was working the midnight shift at a little store. She died on the operating table while the doctor was trying to put her throat back together. They lost her for about 4 minutes. She lived in a small town so news traveled fast. She was visited by several local clergy because at the time she was a southern Baptist Christian. They questioned her about her experience. When she told then she didn't know until the doctor told her about it, they refused to believe her. One even told her she was an idiot and could make millions if she would just "play the game". My wife is an Atheist now.

Marstroll Hey, one can hope though right? The more we talk about this being just part of our nature to see patterns where there are none, that it's a collective mild version of schizophrenia. Or it's just an excuse for people to fulfill their need for belonging and a mechanism to instill their children with values. Even though if questioned on their own, most theists may admit they don't believe in half of the supernatural stuff each "religion" asks them to believe.

Maybe not a 100 probably a thousand years, history tells us that Gods tend to hang on for a while until one random day, people have a popularity contest show of hands and decide the next imaginary thing to believe just like what they did in emperor constantine's time when they decided to believe in christianity and make it main stream, while abandoning Zeus and friends. i live in japan, and i've heard many stories from japanese people (usually on tv) about them having a near-death experience and "going to heaven". however, what they tend to see on their deathbed is nothing like westerners do: many japanese people claim that, in their near-death experience, they saw a single river in front of them, which they were about to cross but did not. pretty different from the christian heaven with angels and harps and stuff, huh?
well, this river actually originates from a famous buddhist mythology; it is said to separate life here on earth and the afterlife, and once you get to the other side of the river, you're a goner. as you may know, japan is a country that's heavily affected by buddhist tradition, and even people who don't identify as religious are still exposed a lot to buddhist customs and stories. thus, it makes total sense that they would see things that resemble the buddhist view of afterlife rather than the christian one, since their brains can't generate what they're not familiar with.
christians, i know what you're thinking, and you're right, this doesn't disprove your religion nor the presence of heaven. however, i do think that this proves how these near-death experiences are nothing more than just people hallucinating, or at least, that these stories about heaven aren't that reliable, since people from different cultures see totally different things.

Although people in other cultures and religions don't go to “Heaven”, they do have Near Death Experiences. I wrote a report about NDEs in high school (my English teacher hated it; she was a conservative Christian) and looked into a few specific NDE claims (I basically searched for the supposed best cases for NDEs being supernatural; it turns out they aren't all that good), as well as looking at general reports on the nature of NDEs. One of my favorite factoids from that is that Indians tend to have NDEs about office buildings. NDEs tend to have similar components based on where you live; it's all cultural.

I was praying to God n my bedroom when it happened. God is real..and these last days ..many are seeing visions of God even while awake..some during NDE. It is written in Bible prophecy that young and old, male and female will dream dreams and see visions of the Spirit realm. Take advantage of it..ask God to show you a vision..come to Him in repentance and seek Him with all your heart and He will make Himself known to you.

@@badlydrawnturtle8484 You know what truly spells the difference between those who just had hallucinations with those who had a real personal experience with God and the spiritual realm?
Those who had hallunications never came back with something tangible to prove the validity of their experience, while those who had a personal experience with God or in the spiritual realm came back with tangible proof in the form of the following:
      1. A miraculous recovery from a fatal illness or from a high risk surgery that even doctors are so dumbfounded they consider these recoveries as nothing short of a miracle.
      2. These people who have had real experience in the spiritual realm come with stories they would not have known had they not been told by the spiritual beings who spoke to them while in heaven.
      Case in point:
      1. DR. EBEN ALEXANDER, BRAIN SURGEON
He only came to know that he had a sister after his near death experience. He was an only child of his adopted parents. His adoption was not disclosed and was kept a secret so he never got to meet his one and only sister who died years ago.
How did he find out he had a sister after his NDE?
He said during his journey in heaven, he met this woman who had so much love for him. She became his guide during his journey in the spiritual realm.
When this brain surgeon came back to life and recovered, he became so curious about the identity of the woman and shared with his parents how he felt so connected, on a soul level, to this woman.
His parents then revealed to him that he was adopted and that he had a sister who died years ago..and so to cut the story short, he set out to get more information about his sister and was able to get hold of her picture. He was flabbergasted as the woman in the picture is exactly the same woman who guided him during his journey in the heavenly realm. He became a cganged man after his NDE. He now believes in God. [He used to be an atheist]

Eventually the trauma team got my heart started again by pounding on my chest and after a couple of shocks with the paddles, to get the correct rhythm back, I was stabilized They rushed me to an OR and put two stents into my heart arteries. I am still weak but doing pretty good now. Well anyway, while I had no heart beat and was not breathing for 4 minutes, all I experienced was blackness and peace. I had no out of body experience, no white light, no dead relatives to meet me, heaven or hell, just peace. Maybe blackness is just my brain's way of trying to remember experiencing nothing.Just my experience, take it or leave it.

Those authors, are they lying, or do they believe what they're saying? Well, if they sell the books at a normal price, I'm going to go ahead and say they're lying. Chhajju Bania was interviewed in 1981, at which time he was about 40 years old. His near-death experience occurred some 6 years earlier. He became ill with a fever and his condition deteriorated until he was thought to have died, at which time his relatives began preparing his body for cremation. However, he revived, and he gave the following account of his experience as he remembered it afterward:
Four black messengers came and held me.
I asked, "Where are you taking me?"
They took me and seated me near the god. My body had become small. There was an old lady sitting there. She had a pen in her hand, and the clerks had a heap of books in front of them.
      I was summoned ...
One of the clerks said, "We don't need Chhajju Bania [the trader]. We had asked for Chhajju Kumhar [the potter]. Push him back and bring the other man. He [meaning Chhajju Bania] has some life remaining."
I asked the clerks to give me some work to do, but not to send me back. Yamraj was there sitting on a high chair with a white beard and wearing yellow clothes. He asked me, "What do you want?"
I told him that I wanted to stay there.
He asked me to extend my hand. I don't remember whether he gave me something or not.

A couple of years ago, my boyfriend killed himself the day after I broke up with him. You can imagine that this was extremely traumatic for me. At this time, i considered myself as an atheist/agnostic. Still I sometimes talked to him, because I was so devastated and in shock, I just couldn't handle the situation, because I felt so guilty and was so traumatized.
Two month after his dead I walked through a dark park in the middle of the night, going home from a friends place. I cried and sobbed and started to talk to B. and told him that I couldn't handle the emotional pain. I pleaded him to forgive me and asked him something very private.
The next day my sister called. We talked a bit, just smalltalk, and after a couple of minutes she said that she had to tell me something weird. She told me that B. had visited her in the morning and asked her to tell me something. I freaked out, I couldn't believe this. I asked her if she had actually seen him, and she said no, but she had a sudden feeling of B. being right by her side, and then she could hear his voice. He asked her to tell me that he had already forgiven me, that everything was alright. And then he gave her the answer to that specific question I had asked him the night before.
Later, B. "visited" me, too, and he hugged me. I could feel it, and it was very intense.
Of course I have no proof for this, and I don't expect anyone to believe me. But I for myself have the proof now, that life isn't over when we die. I've experienced more strange stuff in the last years, and usually I don't talk about it.
Sorry for my bad English, I hope everything is understandable.

As a psychology student I've been working for the last few months on the nature of false memories. We've known for decades that people are notoriously bad at remembering events at the best of times, our memories are constructed and re-constructed and are prone to distortions when we are conscious and alert. So I don't value the reliability of people's eye-witness testimony when they are alive. Just imagine how much I don't value the reliability of someone who starts off their story with "Well I was dead and..."

It was this phenomenon that is puzzling my mind for a time now...how come some people predict the day at which they'll die? There have been some documented cases in my country, Romania when a monk or priest would write down the exact date and after some years he will day at the die he predicted! Is this some sort of psychological conditioning? I mean is it possible to make your brain shut down without physical trauma?

    • @TheGlobalAtheism

      Venor Maddox
I think a more likely explanation may be confirmation bias. It's like people claiming that they had a dream the night before they won the lottery, or dreamt about a sporting event happening in a certain way. Given there are 7 billion people doing thousands of things per day, it would be more amazing if someone wasn't right about these from time to time. I'm not sure if you are able to shut your brain down like that per se, but there are interesting correlations between time of death and psychological condition. For example a Swiss study of from 1969 to 2008 which included data from 2,380,997 dead people and found that you are 14% more likely to die on your birthday than the rest of the year. Although I believe this was only significant within people over 60. But there are also conditions like somatoform disorders which are symptoms that suggest physical illness or injury, but they cannot be traced to any underlying medical or neurological condition. Whether that could be so severe that it kills someone, I honestly don't know, but I wouldn't go as far to say it would be impossible

TheGlobalAtheism Regarding the topic of this video "I don't think it's caused by just a lack of oxygen. Inside our brains, we have a pineal gland which houses a molecule known as DMT. This molecule has been known to be released in times of extremely relaxation and stillness (meditation is an example of this). When someone is about to die or think they're about to die, most people will completely surrender in hopelessness and leave it up to fate (now of course this is all happening extremely fast). This surrender creates an immense relaxation which is the exact type of situation that is necessary for the chemical to be released into the brain. DMT is the most powerful hallucinogen in the world, and a concentrated dose being released directly into the brain from within the brain would cause absolutely immense visions along with intense feelings of joy and peace when accompanied by that sort of surrender to fate.. This is what I believe is the chemical function and reason why DMT is present in almost all life. So I believe most NDE are people tripping balls because of DMT (mainly because not all people have NDE most likely because they don't relax and are holding on for dear life lol), but i'm sure lack of oxygen is a big contribution as well."

I couldn't have said it better myself. What I find most interesting is that not all of near death experiences actually coincide with brushes with death-one study (Owens, J.E., Cook, E.W., Stevenson) of 58 patients who recounted near-death experiences found 30 were not actually in danger of dying, although most of them thought they were. A 2005 study by Olaf Blanke1 and Shahar Arz found that out-of-body experiences can be artificially triggered by stimulating the right temporoparietal junction in the brain, suggesting that confusion regarding sensory information can radically alter how one experiences one's body. In addition, research now shows that a number of medicinal and recreational drugs can mirror the euphoria often felt in near-death experiences, such as the anesthetic ketamine, which can also trigger out-of-body experiences and hallucinations. Ketamine affects the brain's opioid system, which can naturally become active even without drugs when animals are under attack, suggesting trauma might set off this aspect of near-death experiences. I'll probably do a video about this to compile it all but it really is fascinating that we are able to explain the nature of NDE. But I can't help but feel they would be more impressive if they were after death experiences... Just a thought

The father of my daughter was in the room with me, he was a very abusive man. Who I was very angry with at at that time, and wished was not in the room with me. I can honestly say I hated him with every inch of my heart. But at that moment for the first time I understood "The peace that passes understanding" as I looked at him I felt no anger or sorrow... only love and acceptance... the love was different then any other form I felt before.. it was a stronger more pure form of love that came without judgement... it was an amazing experiance. I never felt so peaceful or so free in my whole life. And say what you want about what caused this feeling I had it definately changed my life, and I will never be the same again. My brother did die in an ambulance from a car accident and the paramedics resuscitated him... he say did experiance hell like he swore he went there and hes story is really scary. I was(still am) a Christian when my experiance happened to me. My brother was not a christian when his experiance happened to him.He is now a Christian and that experiance is what made him choose to follow God. Take this and choose your own thoughts on this. Than when I was brought back during the gunshot incident, all I felt was overwhelming pain. And I was still asleep during the anesthesia incident so I don't even remember what happened then.

The thing is, a person is only dead when brain activity is entirely gone. For the most part hospitals declare a person dead after a certain amount of time after no heart beat. If they can't restart the heart.
However, this actually doesn't mean the person is dead. As long as the brain has activity, you could be dreaming about anything. You could be having hallucinations.
Then when this person comes to later then expected. They where declared dead, when they really never where. Dead is dead, there is no coming back from it.
Then they go to explain their story, and those around them are like "Oh ya. . that DID happen!"
However, people in the situation don't hold a very good memory of what exactly happened 100% of the time. So they become easily influenced by the story and they agree that it happened.
If I am running down frantically down a hall way in the hospital hoping for a loved one, does anyone really expect me to remember something a may have said? For all I know, it could be anything. So if that loved one says, I saw you and you said "blah blah bah" I will think about it knowing I may have or may not have actually said something. I think harder and realize .. oh you know what .. I think I did say that!
    Yet it never happened -.-
I believe scientists have confirmed this many times in studies that people do things like this all the time. Even passed memories. You believe something that actually never happened.

Lauren Spradlin to prove correct or hallucination is to prove reality which good luck with that. point one addressed as well as point two because they look about the same. to me this video seems to simply suggest that these stories are not as true as they are taken which he seems to think they are taken without question and used as solid irrefutable evidence to support a belief. I hope some people just start to think and civilly discuss their ideas.

    • @araeswhiteflag

William Smith what i dont understand, is why make a video on something you yourself arent sure on, and then go on to speak as if your views are correct. he states at 4:21 - 4:30 "they want to believe that there is something waiting for us on the other side . . . but there isn't . . . " how does he know? he doesn't. also, he consistently claims they are hallucinations. most probably are, but he has no proof anymore than we have proof they went to heaven. it would be one thing to just say "hey, other than actually going to heaven, hallucination might be the cause of said experience." but that's not what he says.

I mean, after all, if it can keep all of us alive indefinitely, it can protect us from boredom too, no?

I've had a near death experience. Something bizarre that felt absolutely wonderful with an feeling of peace and happiness beyond anything I know how to describe. But I don't have proof and my personal experience shouldn't compel anyone other than myself to believe there is something special that happens when we die. BTW I am also an atheist. I've had the feeling of lack of oxygen to the brain and loss of conscienceless due to drugs, lack of oxygen. Nothing has can even compare to the experience I had during my NDE. I am not saying it was heaven or anything else. It simply leads me myself and I to believe there is something "more" to this life than we understand.

What I never got is how people think that a God who is supposed to be all-knowing is stupid enough to take someone to the afterlife when he knows they aren't really dying. If you 'came back', your earthly life was not over, and you did not actually die because your brain had to have at least trace activity the whole time, so you never really went anywhere...
And knowing that you were not actually dying, why would God's actions be controlled by an early tentative diagnosis of death by a doctor or machine or a person's heart stopping temporarily, and why would that be a criteria for taking your soul anywhere anyway, especially if He really knows you are going to live?

Peter Pringle Everybody thinks they are like their favorite fictional character Jesus... That they come back from actually being dead... when we know this doesn't happen, that their brains stay alive, or else they never wake up. You aren't special, if God exists and does not wish to affect people's free will, then he would not be showing people heaven so that they could 'come back' and talk about it (especially since we know that their brains stayed alive and they never really went anywhere in the first place...) The fact is that people hallucinate under certain circumstances, like when the brain is starved of oxygen from the heart stopping. The brain releases a very powerful hallucinogen called DMT.
Now go kneel in front of a priest and stroke a load down your throat.

sdasds sadsd The link was for the gentleman, who did not hesitate to imply with his comment, that in fact there are no book discussing a trip to hell and back. There are plenty of books and the specific book I had posted, just happens to be a favorite of mine. Why do people not choose to read books about hell? Why do people choose to not read the Bible? Maybe, ignorance truly in bliss. Maybe, if hell is not acknowledge it will simply cease to exist. Unfortunately, this is false and the Bible does a very good job of giving us all a picture of the place called, Hell. It is a place for pure torment for those who have denied, Jesus Christ. Yes, we are all sinner, but Jesus dies on the cross so that your slate could be wiped clean. He can only save you from your sins if you ask. Just study his word. I'm not going to post a ton of verses on here. You seem bright enough to search them out for yourself. I would also recommend reading the book I had posted. There is plenty of scripture within to help you better understand. I hope you search this out thoroughly. Also, you will find in your studies there is a heaven, and it is a wonderful amazing place.

This comment is for the gentlelady who take's every word out of a persons mouth literally:
If you didn't notice, it's common in our society to use the term "no one" as an over exaggeration for terms that explain that "a small amount of people" do or don't do this or that. Here's an example of a situation that this term would be used in.
-Jimmy: "Hey Bob, wanna go to the library with me?"
-Bob: "No, hahaha, no one goes to the library anymore."
You see, in this situation, Bob know's that people still go to the library, it is just less frequent nowadays due to technology.
Similar to the situation in the example above, I know that there are people that talk about how they went to hell and back, it is just less frequent than people talking about going to heaven.
I hope this helps you understand a bit better.

People are aware of the fact that some day, their life will end and it frightens them. So what they do is cook up self-consoling concepts such as heaven and hell. The bronze age yokel, who was heavily influenced by church fathers and clerics, bought it and passed it on from one generation to another. Give me the boy till the age of 7 and I'll give you the man. That is the mantra with all religions. Follow the religion of your parents.

Like a spear through the heart. Also, there were human possession sessions where I knew what was going to unfold and I tried to warn the person I was possessing not to make this mistake but he did anyway and I had to sit through it. Also, I recall trying to get a "Second Chance" on earth and fighting people to the top of a pyramid looking thing. I'm not reinforcing any validity in these people's stories, but if God did exist, the idea of Hell would logically and philosophically contradict the very personality of God himself. It would be against His very nature of being omniscient and loving; for if God is omniscient, he must know that we're going to sin, and therefore cannot *still* condemn us to Hell, as then he would be malevolent, and not loving. This is why nobody has been to Hell, because God did not create Hell to condemn us there, He created it to cast Satan and those angels that rebel against him in.
The reason that nobody has witnessed a different religions' idea of Heaven is because no other religion is correct except the Christian religion. This is why they all see the Christian Heaven. Now, the reason they see angels and all the cliche stuff is because Heaven will appear to you as whatever you picture it to be, so seeing as many Christians see Heaven in that basic way: White clouds, angels, golden doors and roads, it would make sense that since this is what they see Heaven as and Heaven appears in the way you see it as, that they should see it this way.

I'm Buddhist. Experienced a motorcycle accident that knocked me out upon impacting the cement.
What I saw... what seemed at the very instance after impact was seeing a light growing in size rather quickly... relating the experience as the light being golfball size at arms length having enlarged to a baseball at same length. It got no larger because it suddenly stopped growing, remaining suspended. Having a really good look at the light, it didn't cast light North, South, East, or West of its position, but had a very directional quality like a beam.
Next, what seemed a second of time, an energy cloud like nebula in space... but silver, white, pulsating, mixing in and of it began encapsulating me from behind til it closed off my entire view of the light to the point my Conscious eye saw nothing but pulsing energy. Then that energy opens up in my front view where the light was no longer seen, but only dark empty space.
The whole experience seemed 10 seconds duration. But a bystander and the man of the car who pulled in front of me were able to tell me I was unconscious for no more than 5 minutes.

These cases of people who were "dead" for a while before ressuscitation are merely semantic.
"Legally dead" is not the same thing as "dead". It means a set of arbitrary physiological parameters that doctors use to stop trying to bring people back, because the rate of success is statistically negligible, and it's not worth the effort anymore.
But, as any statistic significance, a negligible possibility, given enough tries, eventually is gonna happen. And then religious people come back with this white light/heaven/paradise bullshit. I never heard of an atheist who came back with tales of hanging out with angels. Probably because they know weird stuff happen in your brain when you're unconscious.
If in sleep, a daily and necessary state of dormency, dreams can get real crazy, imagine what almost dying does to the brain chemistry.
But make no mistake: no doctor can bring back people who died. If they came back, it just mean they are the exception from the arbitrary rule that determines that, when a person presents those data at the monitors, they're not coming back ever.

JTelli786 They probably don't argue on the basis of their NDE and whether it is real (though I have had those discussions before), but they will use their NDE to reinforce whatever their religious beliefs already were. If they were Christian, then now they are absolutely sure that Christianity is correct. There is no excuse in their minds to _not_ do what they think their religion requires. If they have relatively tame religious beliefs, then that's fine. If their beliefs dictate that they need to pound on my door at 9am on Saturday morning or try to establish a theocracy, then I have problems with it.
I also have a problem in general with just accepting something as true because it makes you feel good. I think it is more productive for the individual and the society as a whole to only accept things that are actually true.

I have been clinically dead 3 times and each time all I can recall of it is darkness and varying temperatures. I was cold at first, then warm, then I woke up. Makes perfect sense to me for totally natural biological reasons. I couldn't see, hear or smell anything due to lack of sensory input because my body had shut down almost completely. When there are no working nerves that means there is no information for the brain to interpret. Since I obviously wasn't brain dead yet, otherwise I would not be here, my brain was still processing what little information it could and was interpreting my body shutting down to a feeling of cold. Then when they revived me and my heart started beating again, pumping my blood through my body and warming it, that was the first thing my brain registered before I awoke. Simple biology. I will admit that the first time it happened I interpreted it differently, based solely on my feelings. At the time, it felt as if I was freezing to death then someone threw a warm blanket around me and pulled me back. I could have attributed it to some supernatural cause because that is how it felt, but after thinking on it and it happening again two more times, I realized that it was just my brain interpreting information. All of what I experienced is easily explained by basic human biology and is not some miraculous occurrence. Just thought I would share that in counter to all those near death stories you usually hear. Also I was still a Christian when it happened the first time, but I had already rejected the concept of heaven and hell. Keep up the awesome work!

*Bright light*: oxygen starved optical neurons fire all at once, creating the impression of a dot of white light.
      *Tranquility*: body ODs on endorphines
*Hallucinations*: on shutting down, the pineal gland releases produced psychedelic tryptamines, including DMT.
*Out-of-body experience*: Induced by brain trauma, sensory deprivation, dehydration, and even simple electrical stimulation of the brain. (People even experience OoBEs while falling asleep, or sleeping.)
But, of course, it feels much better to pretend having really gone to a happy place like told exists according by religion...
