I've never done anything like this but learned of this game from the Game Grumps and now I have a lot of ideas, so I bought it and I'm going to do my best to do something new and actually create characters!😁❤
So your telling me this is both a fighting game..AND a animation software!?!
Kinda yes
I hardly understood it at first
I feel like getting this just to make sprite sheets, unless there is a similar option out there?
Like which ones?

We truly have been blessed
This is some really cool software. I'm currently studying Animation and used a character I made on Smack Studio as part of an Assignment, it was perfect for what I needed in the short time that I had.
it would be amazing if you made it easier for doing rpg rigs for top down pixel games. So like walking and running animations for front and back view.
This.
Thank you very much, I was waiting for a tutorial like this.
Very thorough and easy to understand tutorial
10/10
Thanks for the great tutorial. The world really needed that piece of software!
This is literally a game-changer!
Thank you very much, I'm loving what can be done with this app
Yep.. this is what I needed. Thank you 👍🏼💯
This is amazing, thank you for the tutorial!
super cool! Gonna make an s1 sonic using this rigging system.
Is there a tutorial for splitting the sprite parts? And maybe some suggestion for what software to use?
I used aseprite to separate the body parts. It was pretty easy with the selection tool, just copy and paste into new layers. Took about 20-30 min.

hey guys! I just bought smack studio in steam, I was developing a pixel game, and I had some questions I'd like to ask, Is it better if you make the character facing forward instead of facing slightly sideways?
Ps: I'm in love with smack studio!
this is incredible
This looks promesing!
Can I make a shoto character that always face the opponent like Ryu, Ken and Terry in smash? Also, is there a way to include hitboxes during iddle? Im really excited about the game and plan to buy it next week!
What would you recommend for the dimensions (I mean that as in the height and width) for these character sprites?
I jus got the game, its one of the best games, ive always wanted a character i think of in a game with easy implimintation, game is only 15 dollars and worth all 15
You may prefer to call body parts Front hand and back hand i.e. Just started fiddeling around with your product, looking if this can help with animations prod. Cool work so far. You may think to include kb shortcuts as in adobe programs as that's pretty standard for artists worldwide
Do you have any advice on using this software with small, chibi style sprites? I'm using sprites similar to Pokémon or the Mother series which have very small limbs.
Look at the animations you'd want in their respective related games, and make small limbs, try your best to animate with it but you WILL have to remake parts of the animation by hand because this is just a tool and small limbs wont work too well
How do I make one from scratch? I'm using the drawing tool, but do I need individual parts or something? I don't have anything to import
Hey, just bought this yesterday and after making a test sprite work so that I get some level of understanding of how smack studio character creation works. The sprites becomes BIG when I import either the ref image or one of the parts when trying to do what you do.
how do I make sure it becomes small so that it doesn't go beyond the border and cut off a portion of the character or body part?
Check that your original image isnt larger than 256 x 256. You can also use the editor to change the scale of your character.
@@SmackStudioGame Thank you, will try that and see if its any better!
I'm pretty confused with front and back view. My character does not copy back view well as everything front with the order is all out of place went switching to back. Even though I pressed Copy front image to back on all sprites.
after I get everything rig and add it to the timeline it's all grayed out, what do I do?
I have a question, can I exports this sprite and animation like a file in mi pc?
Soo... I did everything correctly? but my character looks crazy in the 3d preview. Very distorted and some parts are missing, any advice?
yo this is literally my same issue did you ever figure this out
I made a character taller than the preset range, how can I adjust the preset range to contain my character?
Will this program ever support larger images?
The reason I bought this program was to animate a specific character that is 149x365 pixels large.
I started on this tutorial, but realised that it does not support my characters size. Will it ever?
256x256
is there a way to fix it looking like my character got put into the microwave for 6 hours in the preview? because it just melts and it ruins the entire thing.
what did you use to separate the pixel art?
what did u use to make cut and move your spite parts what program?
Photoshop
I tried place my character into the game, went step by step and when i went to preview and import, mine its all junky, lines all fck up, im missing a layer, idk wtf happen, i kinda was hoping this would work more easily, i will probably give it another go but if its doesnt work i wont bother making my own characters.
yo every time i try and open create a new blank character it just crashes, any advice????
one thing i can't figure out. so for example i use the animator to make one of my character's legs, and end the keyframe when the leg is fully extended, lasting about 5 or so frames. Now i can't do any other edits that are over 5 frames for the duration. I'm trying to make a wolf with a walking animation, the walking animation per cycle is about 5 frames, for the legs to fully extend, then 5 to go back, but the key frames is every 5 frames. 5 frames legs out, 5 frames legs can back to neutral, 5 frames same but opposite legs, 5 frames back to neutral and repeat. I now can't use the animator for anything else unless it fits within 5 frames. I want to make the tail move but it's looks jittery. but if i extend the walk the wolf is too slow. How can i have the walk cycle be 5 frames, but then edit something else and have it not influenced by the already exiting key frame for the walk?
Is there any way to make it so the backside on the depth textures is exactly the same as the front but mirrored? I can’t match them both by hand
Yes! check the Sync Front box!
@@SmackStudioGame I just checked the sync front box in 3d textures, it only seems to be syncing the max depth, not the actual depth textures themselves
Can you export to Single sprite or a Spritesheet?
I did everything and mapped the bones, however the preview and editor show the characters limbs being way farther apart than they should be. how do i fix this?
edit: fixed it through moving the individual bones back into place
Does this editor have any capability to do cloth simulation for like cloaks, capes, robes, dresses?
Very neat, I am wanting to use this software to create an 8 directional running sprite sheet. Is that something we can do with this program? Is it a tricky thing to do with it?
You can definitely make multi directional sprites!
@@SmackStudioGame I believe that I read you need to have your initial sprite facing east. Is that still the case? Would be great if your initial sprite could be facing south
Can you actually do front / back animations?
idk why its not working good for me... ive done all you done but my sprite only look good on front view, when i click back view its show everything wrong... the head biehnd the torso, the left hand above ... all wrong, my sprites order same as you'rs... head on top and L foot on bottom... really dont know why all wrong... help?
Did you copy all front sprites to back? Most likely it has to do with depth and Z positioning of your sprites, keeping trying different locations. Feel free to join our discord for more help. smackstudio.com/discord
You guys have a video that answers the basics like: the maximum size a character can be in pixels? and other stuff like this?
Is there a way to disable the black outline? And if there is how do you do it?
There is a "remove outline" button on the animation rig layer in the timeline.
Would this work in a doom style game or is this mainly for 2d style games?
It's only for 2d games.
I'm more interested in the animation software than in the fighting game itself. Can I use sprites generated in this software in other games?
Yes, you can export the animations as png spritesheets and open them in any image editing program! You're free to use them in your other proejcts
What is the software you are using to "pull apart" the fighting robot?
I used Aseprite for the sprite I drew for this.
Oh awesome I have that one!! Follow up question...5 months later....how are can the rig be used/imported into, say unreal.
good.
Hi ! When adding animation at the end, the background and arms remain. How can i fix this ? It looks like i added 2 arms. One stands still and the other moves. Please help me
Hey @burakyldrm9715, can you join our Discord? smackstudio.com/discord
You can post a screenshot in the #help channel so that we can see the problem!
What is the standard canvas size that you use to make the sprites
256x256 is the largest supported size. You can also check out our character templates here for reference: imgur.com/a/U3NTBz0
okay, so I could never justify paying for art software, because I'm not an artist, my skills are lacking and I feel like I would be wasting money... but what you've made is a game AND an art software... I've crossed the bridge of wasting money on games a long time ago! this means I can justify buying this! yay!
Is it possible to mirror or duplicate bones for easy doing L et R part ?
Not currently, but that's a good ide for future development!
Is there an external software I can view / edit my sprite sheet as an animation with?
Here are some of the programs our community uses, Aseprite, Photoshop, Pixi Editor, Microsoft Paint, Piskel, and Photopea.
@@SmackStudioGame Thanks! Also what should I do if my preview is wildly different from my sprite?
its the 3d depth i believe. im struggling with it myself for my own fighter@@apollyon4529
is there a way to hide the bone when in animation mode ?
i never used it but i guess just click the eye icon on the Animation rig layer.
I don't know why, but it's program just vanish a half of pixel art that i made in 3D preview
Is there no way to do it from scratch totally? I mean, without an already existing sprite and sprite parts. Can't i draw the actual sprite from 0 in the software?
Yes! You can start with a completely blank template!
wooooooooooooo
I've assembled my rig, but upon moving the parts in the animator, things like his head become attached from the skeleton.
I did everything you did and my characters limbs went further away and the resolution of the character decreased. Could you help
Hey, we'd be happy to help- any chance you can join our Discord so that you can post screenshots? smackstudio.com/discord
We have a dedicated #help channel there for questions like this!
Can i export a character so i can import it in to an other game
like rivals of aether
Yes! You can export png sprite sheets
can we just use this game as character sprite editor for other game engine
Yes, you can create animations in Smack Studio and then export them as png spritesheets. You're free to use them in any project!
Time to make my babies move
Crrrrrud I can’t even get my file in the app. Idk what I’m doing wrong
it says to me fatal error and then crashes when trying to import
Make sure you aren't using a .gif or an image with transparency, we'd love to get more info, could you dm us on twitter or join our discord? smackstudio.com/discord
im wondering if this software can run under an integrated intel graphic card
Check out the system requirements on our steam page!

@@SmackStudioGame i dont think i can run it... thats sad
@@pedroroggla8129 very sorry to hear that! We would obviously love for everyone in the world to be able to run it, and we may add support for more hardware in the future 😊
@@SmackStudioGame dont worry i dont have the perfect set up, its more of a pc to play live music
How do I turn off outlines?
There's a button on the main timeline, next to the name of the layer on the left side of the timelines (it looks like a little man with an outline)
sadly 256x256 px is too big to import properly
what's the name of the program 0:41
It looks like Photoshop
ok so in order for it to import the entire sprite properly it HAS to be a PSD or equivalent file
You can insert .png and .jpg as long as the background is a solid color
@@SmackStudioGameah ok I rewatched that part and realized what was going on, so derp on my part lol
I absolutely hate how no one has mentioned how to split up the sprites litteraly the most important part
You open the sprite in some image editing software and you put the different parts of the sprite in different layers using the selection tools based on what bodyparts should be able to move without moving parts closer to the "root" of the body. As they show in the video you place the different parts separate from each other on the image you import from so you can import one part at a time.
As they also briefly showed when separating certain parts, like the head and torso in this video, you need to fill in holes left in the bodyparts that may otherwise look weird when animated.
Showing how you broke the sprite up in layers and how you saved it should be gone over more indepth. You spend less then 15 seconds on one of the most important parts.
can u make it free because i need the animation software
Then buy it
i love us
Who's your dealer? My last stamp bag didn't come with this software.
The 3d part completely ruined my sprite, made it all lengthy
I wish i had a computer, BUT ALL I GOT IS.. A PHONE.
as a sprite artist this just feels wrong
I don't hate it though but like it just feels wrong to me
i bought the program. BUT... this is too bad the sprite editor is not a stand alone.
You should make a stand alone version. Seriously.
Except, idk how to do anything outskde of the game like make the 2d art, or what programs to use for that, or breaking it up like you did here... Might have to refund. This is far more work than fun.
Everyone in the comments said it was easy and good, but this gets more complicated the more i try to even start making a character... Might be good and fun, if it didn't require third party software with zero guidance. Even the tutorials are all over the place.
Pls mobile support 🥺🥺🥺
Would be really handy
TUTORIAL IN SPANISH PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE
Turn on CC and change it to Spanish
póngalo en español :(
My Character is 173 pixels tall. It only loads half of his head. Didn't you say the canvas is 256 * 256 pixels? That should be enough. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
What application did you make the Original art work in? By maybe the canvas size isn't fully correct as it says it I was having a similar problem struggling myself until I went to pixel studio made a little over a 100 by 100 pixels canvas exported and brought it it back in and it actually imported it correctly for me, you might need to do something similar
*Promo SM*
i see good animation software 🥲
