Love all of the leaf greens in the lemon yellow deep and dap green, but especially love the water colors that I got from the yellow and Cobalt turquoise. What a great exercise in color mixing. Thanks again Jenna, you inspire me!
I was definitely one of those people who didn't want to "waste" my supplies, I didn't experiment, I didn't color mix, I didn't try new things, and I was afraid to mess up a project. Once I realized that never using my supplies was truly the biggest waste I began experimenting, learning, and progressing super quick!
Hello, I’m just starting my channel about Color swatching and your message stimulate me to go on. I understand you because the art supplies are normally expensive and this is why I start my channel. Thank you Amanda and thank you Jenna for this great experience!! 😄
So glad I found your channel! I am 75 years young and wanting to start watercolor for ages! The pandemic pushed me, and I am so encouraged by your approach. I downloaded your Floral E Book, thank you.
I really really enjoyed this exercise, so I decided to make myself an "easy button:" I used pencil to draw the 3 x 5 square pattern on one of those thin plastic cutting boards, then cut out the 15 little squares with an exacto knife. Now it works like a stencil! It will be easy to do 1-2 color charts every evening - can't wait to get started! :-)
I am just getting started at 67! I have been thrust into being Jacl of All trades just after I retired as my husband was diagnosed with cancer, and the a second cancer, and now while cancer free he has many complications due to his first surgery...so now, I am finally putting me in the front line and chose this art form, love that it "mixes with water" 😆 ! Just got my recommended brushes today and waiting on a palette pan and paper... I did order a set of clors and so am just going to begin filling in the chart that came with the set! I don't have favorites yet!
TIPS FOR A4 SHEET AND CM: A4 sheet is 28cmx21cm; split the sheet in four rectangles of 14cmx10.5cm. To obtain 3x5 (15) squares then proceed as follows: 1) split the biggest side of each rectangles (14 cm) with this sequence: 1cm-2cm-0.5cm-2cm-0.5cm-2cm-0.5cm-2cm-0.5cm-2cm-1cm; 2) split the smallest side of each rectangle (10.5cm) with this sequence: 1cm-2m-1cm-2m-1cm-2m-1.5cm. Use pencil HB to draw this scheme and then make it light with a kneadable eraser before proceeding with watercolor.
Fascinated by this and can't wait to make a start with umbers and reds. My favourite of yours is the sweet pea colours, opera rose with cobalt. Last week I dug out my daughter's old paints and was horrified to see what a mess she had left them in - spent ages cleaning them up ... now I feel a right nitwit! Especially as she went on to get a first class honours degree in fine art & I'm just her old mum starting out with your lessons for beginners! Lesson 1: Mess up your paints to look like you know what you're doing but treat your paintbrushes like priceless treasures :) Thank you for a really valuable tutorial, one which gives you something to hang on the wall too!
Recently discovered you. I loved this tutorial. I'm just now getting back into watercolor after 30 years and this is just what I needed. I had so much fun doing my first color study and can't wait to do another one. Thank you!
This is by far the best color chart method I've seen. Thanks Jenna! Love how it enables me to learn about values and color mixing potential of my paints all at once. I'm going to follow your suggestion and do this for all my colors. For all the people who don't want to spend time drawing a lot of squares or are not fans of using rulers (*cough cough*), I'd suggest making the swatches in circles!
Excellent Video! Just starting with watercolors while in quarantine. I am a textile artist(self-taught) and always wanted to paint...so here I am. I am big on making charts, so this is a VERY valuable tool for me. THANK YOU!!
I loved how the color chart made tangible the meanings of a Color's Hue vs. Color Values; hear that sound? that's me smacking myself in the forehead! Also, I loved the colors you got by mixing Opera Rose and Scarlet Lake ; perfect shades for a Ruby throated humming bird -- it's makes me think of a Chinese red -- that sort of blaze red orange that I see in my mind & can now mix for myself! Thank you so much!
As a type A, this hits ALLLLL the boxes 🤤 and I will definitely be trying this on days I have no inspiration but still want to paint. Also, found your Everyday Watercolor book at my library so I for sure brought that treasure home. Shout out to Emma Lefebvre for throwing your name around once or twice. 😍
This is such a great way to see how colors mix and to see how lighter values work with the water. I am going to make this chart. This lesson really shows me what I don't know about mixing color. Thanks for sharing this video.
This is a great idea. I'm brand new to watercolouring (it's my quarrantine hobby!) and have a brand new paint palette. I'll definitely make up some swatches to help me get a feel for how my colours blend together.
Hey Sarah! Great hobby to pick up, I love hearing that. Have so much fun! This chart is so helpful to see what kind of colors you can get from your palette. Enjoy!
@@JennaRaineyChannel Do you currently teach online class or is that a future project? I am really interested in learning more from you. Your so down to earth and easy going. so my style for painting.
I love this because by go to doodle in high school was checkerboard. So now I can have squares and a color board! Thanks, Jenna. Your tutorials are so fun to watch.
I love water colour painting.. it seems very close to how nature would have painted it.. I am so happy I found your channel.. love how you underline the important stuff with more details.
Finally got around to trying this, was fun mixing the colours n discovered some lovely peach tones. Thanks for being so natural when you teach, love that about you.
I revisit these types of your videos frequently. They honestly are changing my painting practice immensely! Would love to hear more about how you are thinking about color theory these days!
I need to find the courage to do this...I have watched alot of videos of chart colors and I have to admit that yours is not boring like others....I really like the way you are doing this....I will definitly find some time to do this, It is worth it, I Know!!! Thank you for your videos!!!!! 🙏🖼🎨🖌📏📊
Finally go to do this. It is amazing to learn about colours and combinations. Thank you so much. Also, your podcasts are amazing! I still have a couple to go but I just wanted to say they are so positive and informative. And yes, definitely 5 ****** content

Loved this exercise. Loved the more subtle hues from Permanent Rose and Cerulean Blue and the Lemon Yellows and Viridian Green, then Hookers Green and Turquoise. Even Lemon Yellow and Ultra Marine gave me much more interesting green than pure pigment. I loved this so much, I'm going to do another chart - and I hate the tedium of drawing the chart!!
I’m buying your book (Watercolour in 30 days) TONIGHT! You’re a great 👍🏼 teacher, I’m a teacher, so I know! Amazing tutorial. Excellent to don't be afraid about colors, water and mixing them confidently. I am going to make my own chart fearless (well, more or less fearless 😅).
HELP!!! What pencil do you use for your grids? You are the most entertaining you-tube-artist-instructor! You have obviously studied art and are willing to share it, that's amazing! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am so excited to try out my new Daniel Smith 5 color set, that are coming today, and his 235 dots!!! What kind of a pencil should I use? What kind did you use in this video? I am scared to waste my first expensive paper!! Do you have a custom grid that makes the 3x5 grids or do you truly use a ruler? You are the best! Keep you goofy- confident personality- it makes your extreme talent fun and relatable!!!🤗🥰 please suggestions on my DS colors to blend...😊
My favourite colour was with the blues and yellow... I love green! Those greens were wonderful... The deeper greens in the patriarch out were so delightful to me... I got excited to try out what I have. I have Windsor and Newton 24 half pan set. I need to expand my paints, but yes, yes, yes, they are costly... But I am convinced the purchases will be well worth the expense. ... I have water colour pencils I will try out this way too...
Hey Vanessa! So glad you enjoyed the video! Some pigments are granulating pigments and separate more easily than others, but as for a specific term, I'm not sure! Color separation? Haha! I don't know if there's a technical term for that. Maybe...??
Just finished a ten-set colour chart and yea verily it was fun and produced pretty results, learnt a lot. In addition to your eight sets I had room to do one lemon to viridian (some lovely cool greens resulted) and then went mad & tried lemon to royal purple! It produced some lovely rich browns and delicate sepias so well worth the experiment.
I really Loved this video!!! and the way you teach. Learned a lot about color combo's. The favorite combo I made was sap green/ prussian blue. Thank you very much, looking forward to your other video's!
Block rectangle or colour card are 3 inches across x 4 1/4 inches deep. Metric: squares are about 20mm with 3mm gaps. Rectangles are 66mm across x 112mm deep to the nearest easily measured amount 112mm is about 4 1/2 inches so works out just a little larger. It's easier to measure squares as 20mm rather than 18mm square. Less maths! Love the mixing concept. There are more options with a typical 12 colour sketching palette. Using postcards with a holepunch in one corner to tie them together with a tag is an easy organisation method. With a split primary palette alone is (I think!) 15 rectangles!
Oh man, I discovered a lot of fun colors :) I like some of the combos using Naples Yellow and Prussian Blue, Naples Yellow and Cerulean Blue, and during my "let's discover different orange shades using my different red and yellows" project, I really only discovered one orange, which is Lemon Yellow and Scarlet together. But there are lots of pretty colors on the page...just not many oranges ;) But hey, not a waste! Lots of other fun colors, like the mid tier of Lemon Yellow and Crimson Red. By the way, I'm a STRONG type A person...so I appreciate the organization of combining colors...and also find it somewhat relaxing, and I feel creative...even though I'm not really (and not artistic). Lol. Thanks for letting me join you in this journey, and for all your instruction! I've watched many of your videos.
Love this. I’ve been watching your excellent videos/tutorials to give me confidence to try watercolour during lockdown . Thank you so much for all your inspiration. 🥰🌈
OMGosh! I just put some yellow in my pink..... this is very hard for me LOL I love your tutorials. thanks. I am really strugglng here, but I AM GOING TO ACCOMPLISH WATERCOLOR.
I'm so glad I found your channel! I've been struggling...I think this exercise is going to help me so much. Thank you for this video and of course I subscribed. Sara
Hey Sara!! I'm so glad you found my channel too and I do hope that these videos help you through your watercolor struggles! I totally believe in you and am confident you'll get better with each time you practice! ❤️
I absolutely LOVE your channel! I will be trying this exercise today. I was drawn to the blue painting in the back- do you have a tutorial that shows how to make something like that??
Ohhhh no! Dooooon‘t do this 😱😱😱😱 I am a heeeaaavy type A! My pallet is heavily used. Looks like new but with deep dimples. Thanks for trying pushing me to a bit of B. But I can‘t. I‘m mixing all of the colors on a separate pallet
Really good and informative video. I find this chart technique to be great help in future while creating a specific color in future drawings. Also seeing all those shades of colors was really pleasant to watch. Also these swatch practice is helpful with light colors as sometimes adding white to a color has proven disastrous for me in past. So that's a big pro that I see in this video. Video was excellent however I did miss the loose watercolor technique of yours where brush just glides over the paper to create a beautiful piece of art. Keep up the good work Jenna :D
As a beginner, I love the color chart I created and refer to it a lot. I'd especially love to learn how to create lots of different shades of Green so I thought I'd create another study chart on the reverse side of this chart! If you were going to do a Color Study Chart for greens what colors would you experiment with besides, or in addition to the blues we have in this chart? Any help is appreciated bc paper is so expensive I'd love some guidance. Thanks
Hello Jenna.. Thanks for the wonderful classes. My wonder is how you got the one color to another with only 3 squares in between? Every time I try to go from pink to deep orange, It's taking me 5 to 7 squares in between each pure hue. The value changes from each color with your quick flick is easy.... Just getting the hue change to happen in less boxes is a big challenge. Any tips? Thanks my favorite Professor Jenna ;) Yes... you are my Watercolor Coach now. Hehehhe Have a great weekend.
Haha, aw, I'm glad to be your watercolor coach! It really just comes down to how much pigment I am washing off in the water in between swatches. You may need to swipe just a little bit more if you want less squares!
@@JennaRaineyChannel Oh ok. Thank you. I will try again and keep practicing. This practice will help me move along in your book, since you use this technique from the get go.
Loved this video-how fun! What do you do if you want to cover a big area with one of the low value swatches you made? Maybe that’s a silly question, but I’m trying to wrap my head around how you get a lot of one colour that you achieved by dipping your brush in water. Also, I’m new at this and finding out that I’m a type A painter. I’ve been watching videos and stressing out whenever I see an artist going from one colour to the next. I would just like everyone to stay in their own lane on the pallet. Also, everyone just mixes in wells that still have pigment on them from last time. Clearly I need to loosen up.
I know you primarily work in watercolour but was wondering if you had any advice for making a similar chart for gouache! My thought is that instead of using water to lighten the hue you would use white?
Loved the singing and dancing. Fun Fact did you know that 1 drop of water is exactlay 1cm wide on a dense surface. The metric system was invented by the Egyptians who knew this centuries ago not the french who claimed it centuries later. They also painted with Watercolors. The inch system was invented by the romans who divided the foot originally into 16 parts which they took from the greek but than later into 12. Thx for the Video I just bought your book and thought I check out the Channel. ;)
Brilliant attempt at the British accent... don't worry, I'm not offended 🤭 Can I please ask if you have a template and tutorial on making a colour wheel that you showed on your live video this week 🎨🖌
I loved this exercise. It’s interesting to me that I have a knack for picking out coordinating colors in clothing but I don’t feel the same knack for color combinations with watercolors. I’m odd I guess.
That's EXACTLY what I do when I'm stuck selecting a color. Glad I'm not alone. I think about what colors I might wear & right away have an answer. Guess it's what we're use to that's the easiest.
I love how you mention the personality types hehe I am a type A and its crazy because I wasnt I guess is more of a control issue that I am working on hehe .
I’ve tried this out and loved how each box is a surprise. Are there any colours which you wouldn’t do this with. I don’t want to end up with a block of muddy browns.

I really Loved this video!!! and the way you teach. Learned a lot about color combo's. The favorite combo I made was sap green/ prussian blue. Thank you very much, looking forward to your other video's!
Awesome! Thank you for sharing your kindness Anita! ❤️❤️
I can’t wait to try this!! Thank you!
great tutorial Jenna, thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thank you, Erin, for watching!
No body shaming! Love yourself, love your love handles. You're beautiful... Own it!
Hi Jenna. Love your videos. Just wondering how to download your Watercolor E-Book please. It looks so helpful!
Thanks for letting me in to your color journey, Christie!! I appreciate your feedback and the support you give my channel!
Thanks Jenny really enjoyed getting back to basics!
What a great video! Patience Yes but you broke it down and now it seems less intimidating. Actually looking a little like fun, Thanks!
That was so interesting! Thank you Jenna! I am excited to try it and learn more colour theory!
Love this. I’ve been watching your excellent videos/tutorials to give me confidence to try watercolour during lockdown . Thank you so much for all your inspiration. 🥰🌈
You are so welcome!
This is soo much fun 😍 by just watching. .. I'm thinking how much I will love n enjoy doing this
Have so much fun painting the chart when you get the chance!
OMGosh! I just put some yellow in my pink..... this is very hard for me LOL I love your tutorials. thanks. I am really strugglng here, but I AM GOING TO ACCOMPLISH WATERCOLOR.
That’s the spirit!! You got this! Enjoy the process!
I am SO glad you got so much out of this, Ace, thanks so much for sharing and thanks for watching! :)
Omg ! Your hilarious 😂 My new favorite instructor 💜
Thanks
Very helpful! Thank you. I look forward to trying this out.
Have fun painting the color chart, Ashley!
“How does it convert?” LOLLLLL hilarious!
Hahaha LOLZ
So happy about this! 😍😍😍
I'm happy you're happy. :)
You make color theory so interesting
Using Jane Davenport watercolors and love mixing Raven (black) with pretty much everything 🌞
Awesome, thanks for sharing Stephanie!
I love this. Thank you. ❤
Newbie here. I am going to start one today! If I have tubes, can I just mix them on a palette by adding a little more of the second color as I go?
loving the crazyness
Brit here, "How does it convert?" Ha ha! love the accent. Love your channel btw Jenna. Keep the great content coming.
LOL! Glad you liked that, haha. ❤️
LOVED this video 😍
Aw thanks Stacey! SO glad you loved it!
Thx for the Video I just bought your book and thought I check out the Channel. ;)
Very fun fact! Thanks for sharing! And thanks for the support, I hope you love my book!
We’re all a little odd in some ways, aren’t we? That’s what makes us all so fun and interesting!
I hear ya! Thanks for sharing Erika!
I’ve tried this out and loved how each box is a surprise. Are there any colours which you wouldn’t do this with. I don’t want to end up with a block of muddy browns.
loved this video
Opera rose and lemon yellow deep. Swoon!
Right?!
