There are people that don't understand the pest control business. The guy that does Mouse Trap Mondays has gotten bad comments because people don't understand that an invasive species is not part of the local ecosystem. These pythons are an invasive species. It's unnatural for them to be in Florida. There are a lot of bleeding hearts out there that won't understand what needs to be done until they see their pet cat or pet dog halfway swallowed by one of these pythons. Keep up the good work. I've worked in the food business for 45 years and I prefer live capture traps as opposed to poison only because a poisoned rat or mouse might be eaten by a skunk or a cat. While I don't like skunks they are a natural part of the neighborhood where I worked. The cats are usually house cats that are bored and want hunt the mice and rats for enjoyment.
If you are not native american, you are also an invasive species.

Your point is true but i just want to add that domestic and feral cats also don't belong outside and are one of the worst invasive species there are. Keep your cats inside and neuter them to avoid wiping out all native wildlife around your area.
@@federicozanolli I agree 100% cats should be kept inside. 60% for the cats own good and the rest because cats like to kill things just for the fun of it. There is another video on UA-cam where an eagle has sunk its claws into a cat and is trying to carry it away and the cat grabs onto a wooden fence with its back claws and the eagle who's already trying to take a cat that is a little bit too heavy for it is struggling. I felt very sorry for the cat and another UA-camr commented that when a cat kills a bird it's just for fun but when a bird kills a cat it's absolutely necessary meaning the eagle probably as a nest of babies that needs to feed. I hate to see someone lose their pet but if the cat had been kept inside it would have been a lot safer. 99% of cats get unlimited food some of them even get so fat that it's unhealthy they don't need to kill wild animals that will put their health at risk as well as any other animal that follows the cat to eat what the cat hasn't. If a skunk walks by a half eaten mouse it will finish it. But because the mouse or the cat having some sort of disease the skunk will also get it.

Agreed, I have a big snake collection and it is tough to see but it has to be done. I think more blame should be put on these owners than the snakes. Not enough people do research and don’t realize what they’re getting into.
What should have really happened were actual restrictions on the exotic pet trade which most likely kills more animals than the ones irresponsible owners let free

It's really sad knowing that these invasive species are causing threat to the other native species but somehow they are considered as vulnerable to extinction back at their own origin home.

'vulnerable' is not that bad of a classification. You don't even need to take steps to preserve it at that classification
maybe coz the original place is not that condusive for hyper growth so thats why they are less populated and hence become vulnerable

There's a well-known example of the Law of Unintended Consquences: According to Wikipedia, "the British government, concerned about the number of venomous cobra snakes in Delhi, offered a bounty for every dead cobra. This was a successful strategy as large numbers of snakes were killed for the reward. Eventually, enterprising people began breeding cobras for the income. When the government became aware of this, they scrapped the reward program, causing the cobra breeders to set the now-worthless snakes free. As a result, the wild cobra population further increased. The apparent solution for the problem made the situation even worse, becoming known as the Cobra effect."
Is there an analogous Python Effect?
For now it would be unprofitable, it takes a lot of resources to grow a big one... but maybe, in a couple of years?
I think they designed the program with that in mind. So hopefully not.

In their natural habitat, pythons have lots of predators before they reach a certain size. Their young don't survive that much because even eagles hunt them. For burmese pythons, Its pretty uncommon for them to grow above 16 ft.
I am from Venezuela, specifically from the Anzoategui state. Over the years I have found many of these snakes which are known generically as deer swallows. I have never found specimens longer than 60 centimeters, but a little further south is the Orinoco river in whose banks are specimens of 2 and 3 meters.
Remember, Florida IS NOT the snakes' natural habitat. In Florida it has no natural enemies ecologically geared for consuming the snakes. The snakes simply outbreed their enemies... That's how they can get so big more quickly than in their native environs...
@Stephen Edwards you're right, none of Florida's wildlife would prey on those snakes, even the bald eagle won't prey on them. I think only alligators can eat snakes but they're opportunistic, when there's a lot of fish why bother the snakes.
@@grantasilom5844 I bet if you taught some alligators and crocodiles to like baby python, it would be a lot easier to eradicate these snakes, so the pythons will keep trying to breed but it won’t do me any good and if you fed more eggs to bobcats python eggs, that is combining that factor with humans hunting adults it would be a lot easier to eliminate both adults and babies

I live on the US island of Guam, where we are swamped by millions of invasive Brown Tree Snakes. They are not poisonous, but they have denuded the island of native bird life. It is estimated that there are 1,000 of these snakes for every human here. The US government has some snake traps up here and there, but they are not even making a dent on the population. I wish that we had some professional snake hunters here!
You have to find some kind of "use" for them -- leather, fish chum, chicken food, fertilizer, etc. And allow everybody and anybody to hunt them. From what I've heard, they've made their way to Hawaii, too.

Well, I'm not sure how much buying snake skin is "helping the Everglades". She's merely double-dipping: already getting paid a stipend by the government for each python she catches to take them out of circulation, and is also getting paid for the material from each catch in the private sector. Something tells me she's not donating all her profits...
Something I noticed about pretty much all of these invasive species out there, from feral pigs, to Burmese pythons, and even lionfish out in the oceans surrounding the Florida keys... It's all our fault for being uninformed, stupid, or straight up maliciously negligent that these guys get out in the first place!

I'm a reptile keeper and a python keeper as well. I love these animals but I also understand they do not belong here in the wild. I support this beacuse I support preserving our ecosystems

Yes, you are absolutely correct. But there are multiple people out there every day. Hopefully, they can control at the minimum, but slowly reduce at best.

eventually an equilibrium will be reached, and is honestly the best situation that can be achieved realistically, that is why they are doing this. There's really no other way to remove an entire species like this without extremely drastic measures or stupidly introducing it's own natural predator that will just repeat the cycle.

Yeah and if they care so much why aren't they really defending the environment, not from pythons but from concerted attacks by the usual suspects and perpetrators of always. A state with a D'Santis Governor is itself a declaration of enmity for everything that lives in nature. Where do you hear their voices of real defense for the Everglades and Florida? And it's not respect for animals but respect for wildlife that drives things here, individual animals goes without saying.
Years ago ,decades ago I wondered how come people were allowed to have these dangerous creatures. They had no rules at all. I thought wow that’s really stupid of Florida to let this continue and now here it is, the results.
There used to be a python snake breeding facility in Florida that was destroyed during Hurricane Andrew in 1992, releasing hundreds of breeding snakes. Plus some people in Florida are illegally releasing pet snakes into the Everglades when the snakes get too big or too much for them to take care of.
The snakes are thriving in the Everglades, and they are breeding. They are an invasive species and they are wiping out all of the indigenous wildlife.
It's funny how it actually wasn't specific people who let them out. It's because people all around the world do what many people do... They buy snakes from breeders. Many of these suppliers/breeders are in Florida and then a hurricane hit and they got out.

The video explained of this was the result of an accidental escape due to a hurricane, not due to simply owning them as pets. I'm in New Jersey and I owned a 10 ft Burmese Pythons years ago. You never hear of these snakes attacking people because they are not dangerous as long as they are fed and properly taken care of.
It is still legal in most states to keep dangerous animals as pets, some states require a "license" fee to get a "Permit". Many states will allow you to have even the most venomous snakes known to man as "Pets". Very scary.
I grew up in South Miami and used to explore every swamp and woodland we could access. I saw my first python in the wild in 1977 in the woods off Old Cutler Road near the Snapper Creek Marina.. It was at least 10' long and scared the heck out of my friends and I.
Some python owners got tired of their pythons and released them into the wild, where they began to breed like crazy.
I am shocked that there is not a bigger business in python skins. Python handbags were huge 20 years ago. Unfortunately they died down a lot.
I believe, and this is coming from a fashion student, it's just difficult to incorporate snake leather into most outfits. The print/texture is definitely beautiful and stands out on its own, but it's a bit odd in a stylistic point to just wear snake leather alone (like boots for example); you often have to balance it with a python leather bag, or snake leather accessories, etc. Hence, the lack of demand when compared to cowhide leather (the most commonly used leather) or croc leather, which I find can be more easily incorporated in an outfit alone.
But who knows? Fashion is always changing

I respect these women, the only time i touch a snake was when i was a kid. A python fall on top of my head and even i don't even know how am i being able to lift the snake and throws it into a bush. That thing is HUGE and heavy! I started running and crying. i still remember it till this day. The python fall from a wooden hut at my house. I have the strength out of fears i guess.

Great documentary on why the pythons need to be removed to rebalance the eco system . Since they have no natural predators, dedicated python hunters need to do the dirty work of foraging through the Everglades! I applaud their effort and dedication!
That’s really smart, and that’s a great option; I honestly and personally don’t think I would be able to do what they do since I’m terrified of snakes 🐍

I don't understand why the state doesn't just allow everyone to catch them. That would probably mean that high school kids, office workers, low salary people would flood the areas on weekend or days off trying to catch them and make extra money from the skins and everything that can be sold.

Wild hogs are another out-of-control problem that is so bad there is unrestricted hunting in most states and even that doesn't help much.
And that's why you need more people who know how to boldly get out in the wild and not spend all their time in front of screens. (Says me to me)

I really respect this lady's ethics and really relate to her with her admiration for the python. Here in Scotland I trap, skin and tan mink skins myself as they are invasive and devastating natural wildlife. But they are such beautiful, cunning apex animals, and where there are parts of the world mink are still being horrifically farmed just for their skins, as are pythons, it would be an insult to simply let the ones who lived a wild and free life, and died as quickly and as painlessly as humanily possible, just go to waste.

Not all snakes are venomous. They could bite, but you'll survive even without treatment. If it ain't venomous, then it effectively ain't poisonous.

There is a garter snake that is poisonous, I pretty sure it's in the south west. It builds up neurotoxin in its body from eating from eating slugs I think.

The problem with paying people to bring in pythons is that some idiot will decide to start breeding them rather than go through the trouble of catching them.
That's why the require a licence to hunt them.
Do you know how long it takes and how expensive it is for a python to grown more than 4 feet…it costs a whole lot more than $50 buddy…a losing endeavor for sure
With bred ones you have a rough idea on its health, age, friendliness, etc
With wild, its a gamble. As well as not all wild ones strive in captivity.

My greatest respect to the ones doing this job. For me snakes longer than 30 centimetres or poisonous belong to controlled facilities and it’s a nightmare for me meeting them in nature. I mean I am not afraid of them, I like the feel of their skin, and I already held some, small ones, but I did and I liked it. Thankfully I live in a country where there are only small and non-poisonous snakes, except for a few, but they don’t live in the part of the country I live in.

Most snakes if they're taken care of properly are very placid and controllable. I've done a bit of training with rattlesnakes myself. If you walk away from them they'll leave you alone.

It is so depressing that people feel like they have to justify killing these snakes. They simply don't belong here and need to go.
Twenty-five years ago, when driving down Tamiami trail to Miami in the early morning, I would see rabbits everywhere. Not anymore. The only rabbits I have seen in recent times have moved into neighborhoods in Naples where they are much safer.

I have several pairs of Snake skin Custom made Cowboy boots. Some are even endangered like some of the Gator and Crocodile skins.

In the 2010s there was a program in Guam to drop dead mice with aspirin (poison to snakes but not other animals) to combat the brown snake. As I recall it was quite successful.
Not sure if that would work here, brown snakes are tree dwellers and I’m not sure what the impact might be on native reptiles but might be worth consideration.
Snakes never eat other reptiles. Unlike other species snakes aren’t cannibals. Also you’re going to hell like it or not

They have another program of radio tagging large prey only large snakes 🐍 can take when the transmitter shows no life sign but moving they hunt the snake down and retrieve the transmitter.
It didn't work. There's a person just above from Guam talking about how they are a huge issue still.
the native reptiles are, frankly, more important than the damage the burmese pythons are doing. The Brown Tree Snake problem in guam is something on an entirely different level (such that the program wasn't especially successful and the only reason it wasn't a seriously misguided program was that there are millions of them to the point they've killed the majority of everything else) and not at all analogous.
Get some Cajun chefs flogging/promoting python on the Bar-B-Q, Python Gumbo and this will cease to be a problem in a year.

We’ve got the same problem with invasive green crabs in New England. I know a chef who’s tried to cook them a dozen different ways to create a market, nothing worked.

So 100 professional python hunters vs. 50 to 100 pythons per clutch of eggs. Yeah, that doesn't equate.
The video doesn't really do much to explain that, but snakes are similar to other species that have lots of offspring and scatter them to the wind. Most don't survive to adulthood. Another example would be the likes of fish or frogs, certain species can lay hundreds of eggs sometimes and most never make it past the first few months.
Not sure if thermal sensing equipment would work for cold blooded critters but if so they would be WAY better than driving around shining flashlights.
I was thinking the same but a simple search shows they would be invisible to thermal imaging.
Still seems like there are plenty of better ways to track or trap giant snakes.

This snake is native in my place.
Usually when it is small (under 2,5 meter) we call it "wood snake" or "ulo kayu" in javaneese.
When it become huge, then it called "ulo sanca kembang".
Usually it live around paddy fields and eats rats.
When I still live in rural area, I could killed 1 or 2 snake of this species each year, but only when they are still "ulo kayu".
Mad respect for for taking such monster "ulo sanca kembang".
When you come to Indonesia you could introduce yourself as "pawang ulo".

So my old house is so close to paddy field, so many times small snakes goes around our house and eating our chicken.
We kill only small portion of them.

@@ahmadganteng7435 FYI, there are many python slaughterhouses in Malaysia and Indonesia where these captured helpless reptiles are often skinned alive in the most horrific way. Shame on you people there, big shame, time to stop animal cruelty.
And don't pretend that you don't know about it, people are paid, I heard about 30 Euros (maybe more) for capturing a live snake, so they willingly decimate the native stock for peanuts really compared to the huge profit in python skin trade when those are sold to big retailers.

She mostly honors her bank account, look up the price of python skins, they are not cheap.
They could legit turn this into a tourist attraction. I'd pay a reasonable fee to go snake hunting with them for a day.
That sounds fun but may not be a good idea. If the snake catchers were paid to take tourists along they would be motivated to ensure the snakes are not completely eradicated from the area as it would destroy a source of income. Some greedy people may even start breeding pythons and releasing them to ensure a steady supply to attract more tourists and keep the business going.
Just one thing, the presenter said "poisonous" but when referring to a snake bite the correct term is venomous. If it bites you or stings you it could be venomous. If it's something you eat, then it could be poisonous.

I may be wrong on this, but I'm certain that I saw a film about the Burmese Python hybridising with another type of Python, can't remember if it was the Royal Python, or the Rock Python?
Apparently the hybrid is not only large but very aggressive also. 👍
It's the African Rock python hybrid. African rock pythons are highly aggressive. Burmese pythons aren't as aggressive but the hybrid combo is creating this, super snake species. The two species are very similar genetically and that's a reason why they are able to mate. It can be a huge issue
Royals pythons are just another term for ball pythons, and those guys are pretty small comparatively. So that just wouldn’t work out breeding wise. Fun fact, the Royal name came from how some royalty would wear them around their necks (alive, just chillin casually) bc they are such relaxed animals

Pythons aren’t poisonous, because snakes are not poisonous - mushrooms and frogs are. Snakes can be venomous though.
We ate a Burmese Python once that was to agressive to handle

@@patrickmunneke8348 lots of people have also released burms! Pet stores selling babies for very cheap and owners not considering how big they get and how much space it needs/how expensive a big snake is. Then people release them into the wild.
People shouldn't own these "pets" in the first place. There is zero warranted or reasonable justification whatsoever for private ownership of large snakes, the same as with any other exotic species. The people who own them are 100% the problem, ownership should not only be banned but also punished with heavy fines. Not only do most people not keep their snakes in tanks that are extreme weather proof but many don't end up keeping the snakes indefinitely and pass them on by whatever convenient means necessary.

There was a TV show called Guardians of the Everglades. That followed python hunters and they turned them in to hats, wallets, shoes even atleast their using the animal not just flinging it away.
So sad to think how many animals died to create that giant snake.

If FL wants to get rid of them so badly, announce an open season for any capable person to catch, not just a 100-person limit.
Mucking around in the everglades isn't exactly like walking down the street friend...that's an easy way to rack up casualties from the overconfident and the ignorant. From aligators to various venemous snakes, and even algae blooms that will kill you if it gets into your body if you are unlucky, the swamps of Florida are not a casual hunting ground.

I think there will be a loss of balance of native species of animals soon due to these pythons and the lack of ridding the Everglades of them.
Sure, but there are plenty of invasive species that are destroying native habitats and people are doing NOTHING about it. For example: cats. Cats have wiped out hundreds of species of native birds and reptiles all over the globe. They are far worse than these pythons. Despite this, if people went out and killed all of the stray cats and had competitions of who can kill the most or find the biggest, people would go to prison. In the eyes of the public, these pythons are "menaces" and more popular animals are never touched, even if they are worse for the environment. Don't get me wrong, I love cats. But I can't stand the double standards that people have for this sort of thing!

Sheer insanity! I have watched several of these videos about stopping this snake problem in the everglades.
After doing so, simply judging by the videos, I have concluded that all these so called animal lovers will never allow it to happen.
idk who suggested sending them back to their native countries. ydk how much there are so a sudden increase in the population might upset the current balance. That's just making problems for the native countries that has to deal with what problem it might cause later on.
They are on the red list in their native countries, and its them that keep the balance there, and the creatures there know how to deal with them, in the everglades the creatures don't know what they are, so don't bother until its 2 late.

You know u can not only use the skin for leather, but also the fats of the python can be used as ointment fir wounds and massage. To see these pythons be this massive, you have to think of how many native species it devoured and made closer to extinction.
These titles are so incredibly blown out of proportion. Massive constrictor snakes such as Anacondas, Reticulated or Burmese pythons have been known to get big enough to eat Caiman or juvenile alligators. It would take a snake the size of something out of a CGI-rendered movie to eat a full-grown alligator. I worked at a reptile house where we had a "captive" Reticulated python, fed on a schedule, and pampered with an enclosure the size of a small apartment. She was nearly 17 feet long and weighed 190 lbs. It took 4 of us to take her out of the enclosure safely and she ate chickens and rabbits. The truth is these massive snakes will avoid a fight if possible, they are not invincible and they are not fast-moving. Eating a small alligator or any dangerous prey would be a last resort in the wild. I'm sure your first thought on reading this title was some half-ton 1,000 lb. alligator and that's just not reality.

Never, not in a foreseeable future considering their numbers and the rate at which they multiply. I don't see how the number can be decimated. The only solution to this invasion is to look for the eggs and blow touch them along with capturing them. If they don't belong there, they shouldn't be there. If they were human and had no valid resident permit, they would have been deported. The same applies to them.
If human able to hunt more than they reproduce.

It's a big maybe. It would take years and years of hunting them and at that point the everglades plants and greens will die off because of how many people it would take to catch all the pythons. I don't really care too much about the greenery but instead more about the other reptiles and amphibians. But yeah, there is a small chance we could get them out. The average Burmese pythons in the everglades lay from 50-100 eggs per clutch/at a time

These snake freaks are to blame for this problem. I used to know a guy who had a Burmese Python and it almost escaped captivity because he was letting it out in the yard to crawl around. What happens when these screwballs start keeping cobras and black mambas at home? It's just a matter of time until those snakes will be in Florida.
They should be caged with them inside for a week.
You have to have a permit to own a venomous snake last time I checked. They won't let some rando own one just because they want it. But that dude that let the snake out in the yard is a dumbass. That's asking for trouble right there. You want the snake to have some free roam time? Let it free roam in the house then. Ffs.

I got my dad a pair of wild caught python leather shoes sourced out of the Everglades, the products they created aren't bad quality.

Don't know if anyone can answer this, but if you're going to kill the snake anyways why not just shoot it in the head, then you find it would be a lot less of a struggle
It’s hard to kill a moving snake that’s camouflaged well in the environment. Plus, the amount off bullets and the amount of missed tries will be costly.
@@tyler8002 if you can grab a snake and particularly a large one, especially with more than one person, you could easily shoot it in the head and then there would be no more struggle. Just watch the video again and count the number of times you could take a small caliber 22 pistol and shoot the snake in the head and it would be dead
Agreed. There are so many ways to end the hunt real quick. It makes no sense to wrestle pythons in the dark in the middle of alligator country.

They say in the video. Depending on the snake they can be used for research. In addition, my personal thoughts are that the state can assure the public that the animals aren’t being killed and handled in unnecessarily cruel ways by amateurs or people who don’t know better. They use the term “euthanized” so that would make sense.
