Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am offers an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the acclaimed novelist. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.
Directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.
In select theaters June 21st.

This is the kind of queen our black girls should be trying to emulate. I’ve been an admirer since forever. Time for some re-readings!
Marie Maxime p
Marie Maxime she has been mine since forever
Marie Maxime I was blessed to read her in High School. She’s & Alice Walker have inspired me since. Sad she is now gone, but her literary work live one forever. I pray new generations read and pass on her legacy.
Each black woman has their own journey to take, Toni Morrison cannot be imitated
but her legacy will never die
I want to see this film over and over
I miss you already
Now you are gone in the flesh yet I have every book you wrote
Thank you Queen. Thank you.
I've read so much of her work she is absolutely one of my most favorite writers
I am so blessed. I've read all of her work. Every single book. Starting in high school.
But I'm 66 years old. LOL. You've got the time to catch up. 😇
Read Toni Cade Bambara too.
Be encouraged.
LOVE HERRRRR
What A Time To Be Alive! 🤗
She is a tremendous & devastating loss today. This is who our young women should aspire to be! I know she inspired me as one.
Om Shanti
I just saw this work today with my 17-year-old in a quaint theater that while dark, felt like an intimate discussion with the most distinguished author. AN AMAZING look into this woman's mind. She changed my life a few weeks after walking onto the campus of Dillard University in 1988 where the entire freshman class sat on the Avenue of the Oaks for about two straight weeks reading and discussing Milkman, Pilate, and Guitar. It was revolutionary to see the level of intellect and perspective that was shared. I teach English at a 2-year college, and her passing has left me with a sense of duty to share her in the same way someone shared it with me. Every student, wherever they seek knowledge should have an opportunity to learn to fly! A Modest Tribute is my focus this academic year. I know I cannot do it justice, but I can at least arouse interest. Be Blessed Toni Morrison!!
I've never read nearly enough of this GENIUS'S work.
This ends today.
Lavender Jack...Swooping On Down.
Do it.
What have you read? I saw this comment is years ago
@@ndeamonk24 , in the years between this comment and today, I've read Beloved, Home, Sula, A Mercy, Love, Paradise, Tar Baby, and Jazz.
@@LavenderJack540 Tarbaby and Sula
@@ndeamonk24 , both fantastic novels.
Toni was simply GENIUS.
Her literary gifts will be studied for as long as there are humans to study them.
She was absolutely extraordinary.
Lord, I cannot believe we have this parting gift. I dream and think of her since I picked up Song of Solomon in my teens. Now 25, it's stretched and caved my memory perpetually. In her passing I've been digging up interviews or whatever I can to just, hear her. She undressed the notion that anyone of us is 'special' by telling stories we 'all' related to but her ability to do so, stood her absolutely alone. I know love because of Ms. Morrison - and God to. What a wonder He imparted with her. I'm eternally floored. Rest on, truest angel.
MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE AUTHOR!! PLEASE AVA, MAKE A MOVIE BASED ON THE BOOK SULA!!
She is amazing! We have lost so many great black writes Toni is one of the greatest that we have left and right now and we should all know know her❤❤🙌✨
I am sooo ready to watch this film, LOVE Ms. Morrison
Thank you for this important work. I saw this film with my spouse on our 20th Anniversary a few weeks ago...and had that sinking feeling that she'd transition - which she did shortly after. We laughed, cried, and hugged ourselves watching this amazing documentary. Thank you once more for also having so many insightful legends and thoughtful people offer commentary - so wonderful. Brilliant in fact. Having studied with Sonia Sanchez, it was remarkable to see that she remains the same - fierce, lovable, precise, and powerful - just like Toni.
I’ve watched this at least a dozen times.
She was PHENOMENAL.
Just heard about her death. So sad right now. Rest in Paradise my love and thank you for the grace and magnificence of your voice.
Rest in POWER, Ms. Chloe! Thank you!
You MUST see this. I love biographical documentaries, but this just took my breath away. THE singular literary genius of my lifetime and arguably the most astounding intellect I've ever seen. She had so much flavor and gravitas. I just watched it and want to see it again!
How beautiful! Thank you for sharing yourself! Your stories remind the world that Black People are, have been and, will remain people; and that's the edited version!!!!
I am looking so forward to this. Thank God it’s being released at a time our sista is still living to see how much we appreciate her. I’ve read so many of her books.
"The Big Box" changed my life as a child, as a writer and adult I appreciate her work even more now. ♡
Tiara Words from God I’ve only read snippets of The Big Box from the blog called BrainClippings. But I’m interested to know how it changed your life as a child. As an adult, just the few excerpts make me feel like..like my daughter needs less quality toys and more quality time with me. Knowing Toni, I bet there’s much more meaning between the lines. I’m curious what you go from the story.
@@deeptreediver Being a young child and seeing the children escape from the box in the end made me feel like I could do anything if I put my mind to it. As an adult I resonate with that aspect now by seeing that I am more than a box. I am more than capable of escaping the reality I'm in, and going further with turning my dreams and thoughts into my future. :)
Her book I believe was the first book I ever read. It was either the first novel or the one that hit me so. I was very young and the only black girl in an all white school and bluest eye burned into my soul.
SHE IS MY LEGEND!
SHE IS JUST BEYOND WORDS!!!
MISSES TONI MORRISON!!!....
RIP Toni Morrison, thank your for your words. ♡
Beloved, a life-changing book. A treasure.
Ancestress Toni we call on you in these transformative times.... let her light shine on us all. And guide the way. Asé

Thanks, Tom Morrinson! I love you.
This had me rapt! I let out a shout once it ended and watched it again. Her novels have expanded my mind and heart in ways I’ve yet to be able to precisely articulate. I can’t wait for this!
I saw this yesterday and could not focus on anything else. Incredible! ❤️
What a huge loss to us all! she was an amazing woman and author. I loved every single book she has written! I cherish each one even more now that she has died. She wrote truth. Her writings made me think. Her characters were real people with real stories. I thank God I know her work. May she rest in peace and may God bless her family.
Rest In Peace Ms. Morrison. Truly a phenomenal woman.

Rest In Power Toni Morrison ❤️
May her glorious soul sore in peace.
Queen 👑.
Such an important film
#RIP QUEEN!!!
Powerful
fantastic ❤❤
so hear me out. i'm a white gay dude. and i love her. i read all of her novels for the first time in my mid twenties and i come back to re-reading them once a year. i do feel all before paradise (minus tar baby) are a hot thing. the latest novels are not as catchy for me. but oh my god she's a monster of a writer. you read her books and you still remember the minuscule details of every character months later
billy God Help the Child is a real page-turner , check it out. It certainly left me puzzled at the end but still drenched in the magic only Toni can create!
@@deeptreediver: Seconded. God Help the Child is masterful.
Why did you feel it necessary to tell people you are a "white gay dude"? What does this have to do with Toni Morrison's work?!
@@Pistolwhipperz hi. i'm also from old white Europe. i'm the complete opposite of her universe. but her work is so good that i can feel really connected with her characters and her universe.
@@ninbin34 That's fine but Toni Morrison herself states that she does not privilege whiteness in her work. Just appreciate the work without stating your "whiteness" as if it's a miraculous thing that a Black woman's work could possibly reach a white person.
Rest In Peace Ms. Morrison
What is this music? I need it in my life. Thank you.
RIP Toni Morrison
I want to watch it but it's impossible in my country (France)🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
fucking. love. her.
The world has lost a giant!
V inspiring woman.
RIP Toni
where can i watch this??
a great author it's sad
Can anyone tell me who is the woman interviewed at 0:33, please?
RIP
Just a suggestion, one cannot accomplish things simply with cleverness. One must take a broad view. It will not do to make rash judgments concerning good and evil.

Uh... There's something in your eye.
this film isn't getting enouch publicity
Hey AntiIntellect
Why the illuminati one eye symbol mmmm
its getting kind of old rhetoric , im sure she has a point but im tired of hearing about it all . there hasnt been a slave in this country in 200 years . duh
civil rights were being fought for only 40-50 years ago. There are people alive that remember not being able to go to certain schools or eat or drink at certain places because of their skin. The first African American to attend an all white school is alive. Today, police officers can unjustly kill black people and face no charges. It is not an old rhetoric that black voices are necessary.
