Though I was only a child in ‘59, I recall the deaths of Alfalfa Switzer and George Reeves, who were, in a sense, part of my life back then, and vaguely remember hearing about three rock and roll musicians who died in a plane crash. Hard to believe - over 60 years ago!
Yeah. That was 65 years ago. I was only 2 years old so I don't personally remember that, but I have watched several videos of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper perform and they were awesome!!
I graduated high school in January of 1959. 65 years ago. I remember so many of those faces of people I heard about growing up and enjoying my teenage years.❤
in March of Last year the remains of Edmund Gwenn were found in a vault at a crematorium. In December of last year he was finally was set in his final resting place
As Vince Gargiulo brings us into the 1950s, we are going to see, like in this video, more and more people who were born in the 1860s, 1870s, 1880s and the 1890s. For us living in 2024 (and thereafter), getting to see this will be an interesting way of traveling in time.

@@jamesmoss3424 Here’s why it was a mistake for Peterson: The CAB found that although Peterson had flown for 711 hours, he had only completed 52 hours of instrument flight training. He would pass his written test, but he was not yet certified to fly in conditions where using instruments alone was necessary. The Dwyer Flying Service was only authorized to operate under visual flight rules; however, on the night of the incident, the low clouds, absence of a horizon, and lack of ground lights would have made visual flying impossible. Nine months before the accident, Peterson's instrument check was also unsuccessful. His training was also conducted on aircraft with a traditional artificial horizon. An older Sperry F3 attitude gyroscope was installed on the Bonanza involved in the crash; the two types of instruments show aircraft pitch attitude data in graphically opposite ways. Peterson chose to conduct a flight that required instrument flying skills, which he lacked, and for which the CAB holds him accountable.
@@jamesmoss3424 If Peterson hadn't flown the Bonanza on February 3, 1959, then Holly, Valens, and Richardson Jr. would not have been killed. 1959 was the year my Dad was born and have seen a few Errol Flynn films and remember when reading when he died in 1959 at age 50 due to long term alcoholism from a heart attack that at his autopsy showed his body was that of a 75 year old due to his excessive drinking and liver in such bad shape that he would have died with 9-12 months after his death had he lived longer. Rip Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper who died in Clear Lake Iowa not far from where my Dad grew up as I live in Minnesota.
I was only 3 months old when Carl(Alfalfa) Switzer died at 31 and George Reeves, almost 65 years since he was murdered. Big Bopper really put some great hits for 50s music. R.I.P.
The death of George Reeves was a real shocker at the time. Even though his death was ruled a suicide, there were others, including his mother, who believed that he might have been murdered because he just had too much going for him to want to kill himself. The 2006 movie Hollywood Land revolves around the circumstances of Reeves’ death, and Ben Affleck’s portrayal of him is spot on.
I just visited Frank Lloyd Wrights Falling Water that he built for the Kaufmann family here in Pittsburgh. It's amazing architecture how he incorporated the surrounding creek into the home, but was so muggy inside and a strong smell of mildew. Anyway, another wonderful collection, thank you.
Una O'Connor was nearly 50 years old before she appeared in her first film and her career only really took off after she appeared on stage in Noel Coward's "Cavalcade" (1933) at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The part she played was one Coward wrote with her in mind. It was her key to what became a successful film career playing mainly comic and fluttery voiced maids and servants.
@Kjt853 You are right! The director of "The Invisible Man," James Whale, was a fan and used Una O'Connor to good effect in that movie and his "Bride Of Frankenstein".
English born Charlie Hall (also credited in films as Charley Hall) was the "little nemesis" and most frequent supporting player in Laurel & Hardy's movies. He appeared in 47 of them. He first met Stan Laurel when (like Laurel and Charlie Chaplin) he was a member of Fred Karno's music hall troupe.
Paul Douglas was in a brit film called The Maggie. I urge everyone to see it. Funny, old school, great movie. Also, there is a pub in Birmingham, England called The Charlie Hall "is that so!"
My God, how young Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper were. I knew Valens was young because of the La Bamba movie, but the other two looked older than they were. They could have mathematically still been alive in their 80s and 90s if it hadn't been for fate, they were that young.
Contemporaries of theirs such as Johnny Mathis (born 1935, a few months older than Buddy Holly), Tom Jones (born 1940, slightly older than Ritchie Valens) and Willie Nelson (born 1933; formerly performed with Waylon Jennings, who gave up his seat on the plane to JP "Big Bopper" Richardson) are still alive and still performing!
I remember hearing that Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer’s death received very little press coverage because he died on the same day as Cecil B. DeMille. DeMille’s death dominated the obituary pages while Alfalfa only got a small mention.
Carl Switzer. Ritchie Valens. Buddy Holly. The Big Popper. Billie Holliday. Lou Costello. George Reeves. Mario Lanza. Rest In Peace and thanks for your legacy.
Lou Costello was actually born in 1908. He was 50 years old when he died. I know this because I have a vhs with the biographies of Lou Costello and Bud Abbott in it. Lou Costello did die in 1959.
