How To Potty Train a Puppy | Chewtorials

- Learning how to potty train a puppy is one of the most important things to do when you bring them home. First, you’ll need the right size crate. Big enough inside so your pup can comfortably stand up, turn around and lie down. Then, introduce them to the crate and keep it in a safe, familiar spot. After that, create a schedule with your pup’s potty breaks for the day. Also consider “naming” their potty time, so they’ll know when you use a specific word, like “hurry,” or “potty.” Get them familiar with lots of places outside to prevent them from only going in one spot. Finally, make extra potty trips when needed and get ready for accidents because they’re gonna happen. That’s how you potty train a dog.
By following these simple steps, puppy potty training will be a clean, simple and easy experience for you, as well as your new bestie.

Remember, patience. Best advice for, well, everything really. 😉 Finn was so sweet and adorable that I couldn’t resist clicking on this video even though... I don’t own a puppy or any pets at all. 🥺 Maybe one day! Thank you Seth. ❤️
You're so right about patience! We're sure you'll get the puppy of your dreams one day, and you'll be the best pet parent too. 💙

I'm having trouble potty training my 4 month old dog Darla. I'm going to try your tips & see what happens. Then you. This is great information.
We wish you and Darla luck!
Did it work?
Thanks
Love! ✨✨
We are so glad! Who is the little one that you're working with?
Thanks soo so so much for this cause my dad said( my dog had pups) that if I potty trian him in two weeks I could keep her!!
We are so glad that his helps!
I dont think you would want me to subscribe since I didn’t want to but I dropped a like.😊
My 9 week pup poops in his crate at night. I’m constantly doing laundry.
Oh, no! There are several reasons why your dog keeps pooping in his crate at night. How is the potty training going?
@@Chewy Potty training is good. Goes outside about 75% of the time. I’m thinking that the crate is too big and the partition is not set small enough. He’s a JRT so very small right now.
Potty training is a lot of patience, but he'll get it. 🤞
🎯 Yes, that can be what's causing it. If the crate is too big, pups tend to get overwhelmed and go to one end to release and the other for sleep.
I have a baby golden that is doing a great job!!♥️❌⭕️
That's so great!
This Relly helped I'm trying to adopt a puppy for my Cussen, and he isn't potty trained, so this helped a lot of thanks
Any time!
@@Chewy Thanks and sorry about that other comment.
It's quite alright! 💙
👍😊🐢
Finn is the cutest thing ever. What breed or mixed breed is he? I would love one just like him.
Finn looks to be a terrier mix.
What kind of dog is this? He is amazing
Finn is a mixed breed pup! Likely a terrier mix. Is there a lucky pup in your life?
I Dont have a dog, but this is pretty useful for when I get one. By the way one question: why isn’t “hurry!” Not useful for puppies or a dog that is big just like a golden retriever
Hi there. It is useful when you get your pup accustomed to a specific word such as "hurry" or "potty" which can make the housebreaking process much easier. We hope this helps, and if you have further questions, don't hesitate to reach back out to us.
@@Chewy thanks for the help, i Love it, my neighbors next-door have a dog, but sometimes they bark the door, is there anyway to make the dog stop barking at the door so it can’t be distracting?
Every pup is different, and it can be a different process for your neighbor's pup. If they need any help with the process, we are here to help. 💙

Magic is 1 and 3/4 years old, Birthday is June 17, . 3/4 of 12 is 8 add 12,
Is Magic the name of your pupper?
@@Chewy Yes, Is this another Chewy member?
@@Chewy I think I told about Magic to another member, This is Antara
Hey there, Antara. You are speaking to another Chewy member, tell Magic we said hello.
I'm confused on what ure trying to explain?
Let me see if I can do this
Yes, you can! We're here if you have any additional questions or concerns.
I rescued a young dog (7 months) who had only been in a kennel it's whole life. Never been in a house etc. Absolutely hates going in her kennel but does settle down at night. She knows to go potty outside but chooses when on her terms. She started to potty train then decided to both pee and poop in the house. What do I do? I take her out often. She gets praise and treats.
We'd suggest trying to minimize her space with a gate or playpen instead of with a crate to see if this helps.
Only use the crate for night time or when I can't be with. I don't work. I will try to block off more of an area. Thanks for the advice
Of course. We hope this helps.
I've had my dog about a year now and he's just turning 2. He came to me potty trained and needed very little effort to get him to go outside but in recent months since he had a few bad bouts of diarrhea he's seemed to have reverted back and continues to have accidents in the house. I was able to mend it for a while but soon afterwards he continued to have problems. It feels like he's being defiant because of my new schedule even tho his potty schedule is almost the same give or take a half hour. I'm not sure what to do anymore
We're sorry to hear you're having trouble with your pup. Please check out the following blog article. We hope it helps!

My 6 week old puppy is fine with going outside to bathroom outside but he is reeeeeeeeeeally small like not as big as my arm big so it's a little hard to distinguish between him circling and or whining for food or he's just turning around both actions look identical so how would I teach him to do a specific action if he needs to go to the bathroom
Hi, we're happy to help! For the next few days, take your puppy out on a leash at least once every hour. Being on a leash helps your puppy learn to potty on a leash in general, which is useful since you’ll probably want your dog to potty on walks at some point. It also keeps the puppy from running around and getting distracted by all the interesting things around them. Wait until your puppy has finished pottying. You don’t want to interrupt the puppy and have them finish that potty indoors! As soon as you’re sure your puppy is done pottying, offer praise and hand them a tasty treat.
@@Chewy thanks alot
Any time! By the way, what's your puppy's name?
@@Chewy Otis his dad's name is milo
We hope Otis and Milo enjoy their weekend to the fullest! 🤗
What dog is it
Finn looks to be a Jack Russell Terrier. 💙
Every time I take my dog outside to use the bathroom she gets distracted and plays with leafs instead of using the bathroom then when we go back out she uses it in the house
We know that can be a tough break, we have more tips and tools available on the links under the video.
I had every intention of crate training my puppy but I had recently lost my 15 year old dachshund who slept with us every night, and we made the mistake of letting the puppy sleep with us pretty soon after getting her so now she’s not crate trained 😔 She is pad trained but now we have to phase out the pads which is gonna be difficult 😳
We're sorry for your loss, but hope you find the tips in this video helpful! What's your new snuggle buddy's name, Yvonne?
@@Chewy her name is Josie, she’s a dachshund too 🥰
Does Josie still hang out with the pussycats?
Anyone know the breed for this lil guy
Hi there, most of the dogs we work with are rescues and could be a mix of different breeds. 😊
What age can you start potty training? I have a 11 week old every time I take him out he won’t go and as soon as we come in he goes 😂
Hey there, you can start potty training between 12 weeks and 16 weeks old.
@@Chewy thank you for the reply
Absolutely! What is your little one's name?
@@Chewy his name is shadow. What would be the next step in training or how much training can I do with him? We are working on sit and leave it but not sure if I am doing it right
Here's a link to our blog that further explains the process.

PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS COMMENT.
I have a puppy but my house has two floors. She lives on the second floor and I’m a student I don’t know what I should do at night because my house has an alarm and the grass is sooooo far away. Can I let her pee on a pee pad?
Pee pads are one option to consider. There are also turf potty pads that can be used and washed for reuse. Should you have any questions or concerns that we can help with, feel free to send us a direct message on any of our social media accounts, day or night.
