FWIW, since 1987, Federal Employees pay into Social Security, just like non-Fed employees. They also pay into a pension system, some of their medical insurance, and can optionally pay into a 401K. As an example, someone who worked 30 years for the Fed would take home a pension that is ~ 1/3rd of the top annual income they earned (both before taxes). Military personnel and politicians get a larger pension (~ 0.55x their pre- retirement income).
I'm turning 63 in a few months...someone better come up with that money that was removed from my paychecks for the last 45+ years.

I'll be turning 48 in a few weeks. For my entire adult life (30 years) I have heard how social security might not be there for me. During that time, all politicians (Yes Republicans & Democrats) voiced the concern but did nothing about it. Here I am almost 50 and being told that I'll be getting less. Here is the flip side of the coin, the government pays pensions to all of its employees in lieu of social security. So......govt employees will get what they were promised. Non government workers will not. That is the definition of corruption.
There's too many jobs created for state & federal positions that end u mandatory taxes on everyone. For example, a vehicle tax every title change from new to junk yard-- & must be insured. In '70s ins salesmen went door to door not now. You go to them

I'm starting up my own books to publish right now as a side income and making shirts. That's not going to be my main source of income but my side income.
The pount is I can be working 30 hours, on SS and still have side income by then without physically killing myself.
I know one teacher in her layer 50's who has 22 books and still publishing.
Also, those government employees will be retiring at 80-90% of their salary. Nowhere in the private sector will you find that kind of retirement. Social Security is nothing more than a tax. Always has been. It's a shining example of government mismanagement.

Im 63 and went on SSDI about 6 years ago...I only receive $1700 and month......I live in Ky and live in government housing....My rent went up 12% this month........Got a whooping 3.2% raise at first year..

Fast approaching 66 and still working since I was 15. I can apply for my full benefit at 66 and 8 months. I can guarantee that I would have managed my money better than the government. What they’ve done to us is criminal.

Of course you can, but you will not get 100% of the benefits but 80% which is better than nothing. I believe that 70 years old is 100% or the maximum benefit which is close to 2,000 a month depending on how much you earned in the last 5 years. However, you should contact the social security office and get all the information from them. (Please don't take my words as accurately). Good luck! 😊

Both my husband and I worked for over 55 years, we retired five years ago. We were paid monthly, over $200.00 was taken out of each of our paychecks for social security. I now receive only $1,600.00 from Social Security a month. My husband receives $1,800.00. We receive between the two of us only $2,500 a month from our retirement benefits. Unfortunately we don’t get our full retirement because we were raising five Children and couldn’t afford to have our full retirement taken out of our checks every month. We were paying only 1/3 of our paychecks into our retirement funds every month and by doing so we ended up only having a third of what we would have received from our full retirement. As I said we raised five children and couldn’t afford to have the full retirement taken out of our checks each month. Unfortunately with the cost of living going up each and every month our retirement won’t be enough to live on the rest of our lives. Biden is raising our taxes as well as the cost of living making it very hard to live over the last three years.

I know elderly people, in their 70s & 80s, who are frail and ill and only receive $700 - $1200 per month. These people worked hard, in the fields and in the mills, and get nearly NOTHING, and a significant portion of THAT, is used to pay supplemental medical insurance.
These people go without medications and adequate amounts of food, while the recently admitted illegals, get around $3K/mo + free housing and medical.

But it's interesting that he says you can't make it on $2000, and yet you aren't eligible for SNAP in most cases if you are anywhere near that. I have a friend who gets a total of about $1300 and a SNAP benefit of $23. Basically they stole from the people all their lives, and now they are robbing the most vulnerable elderly people in our country.

I’m a 66 year old, white male with a 4 year college education. I see no retirement in my future as long as I can physically work. My social security money, not a government benefit, I never expect to receive and my 401K will loose all value as our country spiral into socialism. I see a civil war on the horizon and a generation that will receive an education that it was deprived in public schools which will cause them to repeat history instead of learning from it.

From day 1, FDR used the SSA to fund his WPA projects, where else do you think the gov't got the money during a world-wide Great Depression. The SSA literally highlights the fact that the 1st person ever to get a SSA check, Ida Mae Fuller 'worked for three years under the Social Security program. The accumulated taxes on her salary during those three years was a total of $24.75. Her initial monthly check was $22.54. During her lifetime she collected a total of $22,888.92 in Social Security benefits.' You tell me where I can put in $2500.00 and get back $2276.77 (91%) PER month till i die. I'll do that in a heartbeat. So, they've already spent your money, as well as everyone else's too. What is even more irritating is that they are now giving out the $$ to new illegal immigrants who have contributed nothing in.

The mistake was giving them the money in the first place. Once you gave it to them it was no longer yours. But then we have to confront the realization that it was not voluntarily given, it was taken. Retirement was set at 65 years old because most were expected to die before they reach that age. I’m now 66, still working with a retirement age that was pushed back to 67 and my children it’s 72. I am bothered by the fact that this woman thinks income redistribution done by the Government is a good thing AND NOT A SINGLE PERSON SAID A WORD TO THE CONTRARY! Social security is "old age poverty prevention program" If you don't like that it doesn't pay enough, blame the GOP that supported taxing social security and refulse to raise the taxes that fund it. They would rather raise the retirement age so that there are fewer years to collect SS before you die.

He's absolutely correct. Social security should be able to be opted out of and it shouldn't be taxed.
I do not favor opting out of SS, but at this point, with no politician willing to do what's required to save it, you may be right.
1)The only way to save it is to require deep cuts in eligibilty, such as a cut-off of income levels at about $80,000 per year after retirement. Anyone making over that from investments would get no SS. Asset value would be exempt because lots of peope earning retirement of $80K have a home paid for. Leave that alone. They earned it.
2)Eliminate income tax on SS taxes.
3)Make a portion of the tax able to be self-directed to other sources of funding, which would be accountable - unlike Congress, which never saw a dime of the peoples money that they never usurped.
4)Make the portion that goes straight into the SS system Sacrosanct and OFF Limits to politicians by any back door contrivance.
5)Longer working years is an unpopular idea, but must be considered, given longer lives. There is simply no getting around that fact. It has affected me and my wife, and will affect anyone younger than us by five years.
6)This got started with Out-Sourceing whole industries in teh mid-1980's. It has NOTHING to do with "greedy boomers. "Finally, make it VERY hard for businesses to leave the US, and easier to return, providing jobs that pay those taxes into the system once again. The loss of good paying US jobs is the single greatest reason SS is in trouble. With so many fewer good paying jobs, the tax base has shrunk and will not support the retirees soon to leave the workforce. We arent going to solve this by having a Starbucks on every street corner. Or some tiny start-up design company that only has part time work kfor interns - no matter how cool and hip the loft is. We need to make shoes and boots again. It's gritty labor intensive work that put America on top and paid good wages - with pensions PLUS SS.

I would be in favor in some sort of training program that teaches people how to invest in their own retirement, but people don't need the government to help them retire.

What I have seen is employees will have just enough withheld to get the full match but no more even though they may be allowed to have much more withheld for their 401(k). Too many just won't save enough and then they will vote for us to give them what we saved. Count on it.

I was born in 1982, and almost every teacher I had growing, up all told me my generation will not have social security. They were 100 percent spot on.
I started working in 1981 and figured it out way back then. The numbers paying in versus those drawing benefits combined with politicians always promising more, more, more benefits...there's no way it works out. At some point those paying in rebel at the ever escalating taxes.

I was taught in High School that Social Security was not sustainable nearly 40 yrs ago. Politicians are pretending they didn't know but they did know and did nothing. Social Security was never intended to be the sole retirement income for Americans (only up to 40%). The remaining 60% of retirement was for Americans to save up and plan. Unfortunately, many Americans have failed to set aside money and invest for retirement.
