Even though it wasn't Mafia, I'd say Killers of the Flower Moon basically has the template of Scorsese's mob films: a bunch of crooks who have no problem murdering people to get what they want. The only significant thematic difference is the element of White supremacy, but even that wasn't emphasized so much that I could see. The movie emphasizes the greed of the White villains over the racism.

Regarding the worry about the runtime (haven't seen Killers of the Flower Moon yet), I'd share the share sentiment if I didn't sit through a 3-hour long Avengers: Endgame, a near 2-and-a-half-hour long Spider-Man: No Way Home, a 4-hour long Zack Snyder cut of Justice League, a near 3-hour long The Batman and a near 3-and-a-half-hour long The Irishman.
But, because I have sat through those films, long runtime and all, whenever I see a critique of a movie's runtime being in-between 3 to 4 hours long, I give people/comments the stink eye, because why wasn't the runtime a concern then?
I get people will have different levels of tolerance when it comes to film, but don't talk about the length of the movie worrying you if you're still gonna go in and see them.
Maybe, that's just me? I don't know. I do know that I'm cautiously optimistic to see this movie regardless.

    • @heatheraggus7501
      @heatheraggus7501 10 місяців тому +2

I agree. Runtime doesn't matter unless I watch it and, in hindsight, think they could have cut some scenes down. (ie: it felt bloated). I would never not see a movie because of its length.

I must say the Killers of Floor Moon really impressed me. If there was one movie that had an impact on me from last year it was this one. Yes I was impressed by the craft of Anatomy of a Fall but Killers of Flower moon was definitely moving.
Heart wrenching and sad but deeply profound Killers of Floor is a classic. I am shocked but this was a movie that should have had a chance at best Picture Oscar. But this is unqualified success from Scorsese who at 80 plus can still make a movie with superb human drama. And most importantly he got the correct feel of the period.
And no this movie does not test your patience. Yes you feel the time because obviously its 3 hour plus but your patience is never tested. But what is achieved by this movie is that not only its one of the rare movies about the Indian community in USA but also superbly well acted and directed.
I give Killers of the Flower Moon an 8/10. Watch this movie. Its really good. I am shocked that people said this movie was in the Best Pictures category to make up numbers. If I were an Academy voter I would be seriously considering which to choose from this and Anatomy of a Fall. And even for Lily Gladstone and Martin Scorsese not winning in their categories is a surprise. I mean Lily Gladstone had a tough competitor in Sandra Fuller but Scorsese should have won. The depth, the nuance, and authenticity he brought to the movie was incredible.

I'm planning to see it this weekend. The 3 1/2 run time is an issue for me too; I have to make sure I go see it on a day off from work. I'm going to try not to buy a soda when I go see it, because I'm always having to run to the bathroom once, sometimes twice, and I miss part of the movie. When Quentin Tarantino released "The Hateful Eight" a few years back, he insisted that there be a little pause in the film (he called it a piss break) for the theatrical version around eight or so minutes long, which I thought was really fair.

I felt like most of the non-subtitled scenes were set up pretty well. Like it was obvious Mollie and Ernest were having a spat about her not wanting the doctors to administer the insulin because of the way the scene played out prior to the conversation.

Haven’t checked it out and probably won’t any time soon, but I will say at this point in his career AND his life, Scorsese gets a pass to make his long ass movies. I respect it even if it’s not my thing.
And yes, you’re right about some of the best movies being long. Forrest Gump is one of my all time favorites and it runs around 2.5 hours, but I never feel the runtime because of how it pulls me in every time. It’s just a subjective thing based on what impacts someone. For example, Jenny’s storyline in particular brings out all the emotions in me because I had my own Jenny. Luckily, there’s enough good surrounding it that doesn’t totally exhaust me emotionally.

@@jimcameron1234absolutely! Again, it doesn’t personally impact me but I know it has the same impact on a lot of people that Forrest Gump has for me.
They’re all just top notch movies that had real passion and research behind them.

I’ve seen 3-hour movies that fly by and 90-minute movies where I’m constantly checking my watch and wondering “when is this thing going to f’n end?” I find blanket statements about runtimes dumb because it’s all relative to the quality of what you’re seeing.

The length is a big deal. It's going to turn a lot of people off. It's going to cut down on available showings. It's going to hurt the box office and make it harder for good films like this to be made. This story could have been told just as well in a far shorter vehicle and I wish they had done that here. For instance, how many times did we have to see Molly get that "insulin" shot. I went with some friends and their idea was that the movie opens with the court scene and then tells the story (albeit in briefer fashion) through a series of flashbacks. I think that would have been a lot better way to tell this story.

I don’t care about movie length. If a movie needs to be three plus hours it needs to be three plus hours to tell the story properly.

Agreed with mostly everything here. Had to use the bathroom too but I think I did find a slow moment. Only thing I would add as a negative is that Brendon Fraser was completely wasted in this movie. They gave him almost nothing to do and then had him do it at 500 mph.

This movie was a shocking disappointment to me. It has all the trappings of a brilliant historical epic by Martin Scorsese, but the drama is almost as inert as it is unbelievable. The film rushes so quickly through the courtship between Dicaprio and Gladstone that I don't even understand what she ever sees in him, let alone how her love for him should prevent her from realizing the fact that he's involved in the murders of hundreds of people in her community, including her siblings. And does it really benefit the drama for Scorsese to provide the whole setup right off the bat? I don't think so. So much of the rest of the film feels extremely drawn-out and redundant, especially when it hinges mainly on the FBI trying to figure out what we already know, and then the question of whether DiCaprio will turn on his uncle. I honestly don't know what went wrong here, but Scorsese's latest is unfortunately his worst (that I've seen so far; I've only seen ten of his films).

Really loved the movie. made me think a lot about the evil in humans, and all the atrocities commited against the original peoples. in terms of length, in the past there were breaks in the movies. you could go to the bathroom and eat in the middle of the movie, but nowadays that does not exist. it should happen again, and that would make long featured movies easier to watch in the theaters
