Discussion and debate with anything in this world anymore feels next to extinct, but it’s so necessary and needed. I love how you always speak from your heart. Whether you love something or hated it and how you always provide context. That’s why I resonate with your channel. Idk how I felt about this film. Part of me loved it. Part of me hated it. I laughed. I cried. I almost fell asleep. I felt like I downed an entire bottle of edibles and felt the weight of the earth. One thing is certain though, Aster is a tremendous talent and seems to weave all of his narratives with grief and fate. This one is growing on me. No pun intended. But I’m not sure if it’s a film I’ll ever be able to watch again, but it’s one I’m glad I saw.
I don't think so. Many ppl want to have discussions but there are ways to have them. Anytime I see a debate nowadays or discussion, one person just tries to sound more condescending than the other.
@@mania4270 Respectful debate is more so what I was implying, but I do agree with you Mania. Having conversations these days is overwhelmingly exhausting when you’re always anticipating a shouting match. I just like talking movies. And talking to ppl that didn’t like it and why. It’s fun learning about others’ tastes and interests and why something did or didn’t resonate with them. And maybe that discussion on that movie will change their mind or maybe even mine.
@@kketchie1 ever since movies and politics got mixed in with each other, it's been impossible. But hey I can't blame politics because before that everyone had this 10/10 mindset that if the movie wasn't a masterpiece, it was bad. Many reviewers lost credibility too by putting more of their emotions and their own politics into the reviews. That's why I like Cody or 3c because it's just a guy sharing an opinion on something he just watched. And he's not being over the top, not trying to portray some character, just a guy talking about movies. And then I believe film discussion needs to move away from horror movies and blockbusters. Dramas and comedies are rarely reviewed. I legit had to search UA-cam for an American pie review because nobody watches comedy films anymore or they haven't been a part of "nerd" culture. Generally speaking, what takes up most of the discussion now are blockbusters and whether the remakes or resequels are good and I think we are missing many other genre that's not just focused on fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and action. It's like how everyone dissed avatar because it didn't have a strong nerd following like star wars, marvel, or Harry Potter. Most of these discussions kinda felt like gate keeping. This review was good because he's just letting ppl know these movies aren't for him. I think now ppl are so triggered given the state of the world and social media. Everything is so wannabe edgelord now
Beau is afraid being the breadless bread plate is the best explanation of this movie I found. It did keep my attention for the 3 hours but I probably wouldn't watch again
Big year for people who like getting mad at Cody. I belong to the group that adores Hereditary and Midsommar that saw Beau and went what the fuuuu? Trippy phenomenon but we had pretty much the exact same experience with this one!
It seems ridiculous to me that anyone would care about someone's personal preference toward a movie. I love your breakdowns of the movies. I appreciate that you don't pander to the masses.
It's only on the internet that discussion is impossible. I have discussions with people in real life about movies and much more serious issues, and we're able to disagree without being assholes.
I enjoyed Beau Is Afraid -- I thought it was a movie I'll never see again, haha! I also really enjoyed your review! You are awesome, Cody! Keep up the great & honest work.
The 3 hour run time is the only reason I’m not going to the theatre for this. Hereditary is my favorite horror movie. I raved about it when it came out and was excited to see what else Aster could do. Midsomar was ok but not even close to Hereditary. So I’ll be waiting til I can watch this from the comfort of my home.
I'm looking forward to this movie. I liked Hereditary, even more so on second viewing. Midsommar won me over instantly & is one of my personal favorite modern horror films.
My mum and I attempted to watch it two days ago, completely agree with you on everything you said. We had a similar experience to you; the first act was actually interesting and kept us intrigued, but then it just dragged and dragged. We were almost gaslighting ourselves into pretending we still wanted to know where the film was going, then I looked at the clock and realised we were only halfway through it.... couldn’t do it, we walked out and saw The Pope’s Exorcist instead 😂 At least we did have a few laughs though; that joke when the dad says “he was killed in action” and Beau replied “where is that?” made us laugh soooo hard, such a stupid but effective joke hahaha
Never be bullied by those types Cody, the reason we like your reviews so much is because you break everything down as to why you found it enjoyable or not. Don't ever shy away from that because of these loud types
Fuck em Cody. I'm an Ari Aster fan myself but I still love hearing your takes on movies even if you dislike a movie I loved. Last year I really enjoyed Men which made it extra funny hearing how much you hated it. I agreed with a lot of your takes but still had a good time with the movie. You're always very well spoken with your likes and dislikes. People need to calm tf down with their movie tastes and let people have their own opinions.
If only people could always be this reasonable with their opinion. Sad to see people on social media resorting to personal attacks because of a movie review.
13:41 This dude is confining art to his expectations and actually feels entitled to what the ending of a film should be. It’s precisely why I like directors like Ari Aster, Lars Von Trier, and Gaspar Noe. They completely take you away from what you want or expect in film and push boundaries by attempting to make the viewer think “outside the box.” If you hated this ending, well, please don’t watch Irreversible or A Serbian Film lol Please stick to your “happily ever after” movies.
I usually have the opposite opinion than yours, but I always enjoy hearing your thoughts and appreciate your candid opinions. Your channel is the first I go to after I see most movies.
i think modern horror fan have been split into two different categories. those who love the more typical horror films (sinister, insidious, saw's) and those who love the more art house and deeper films (hereditary, the witch, the blackcoat's daughter). Of course they overlap a lot of the time but they also clash all the time. You are a great representative of the first type of person.
I’m extremely late to this but I adored the black comedy aspects of Beau is Afraid, especially in the first act between the city scenes and the army family scenes. A particular gag that I laughed out loud for was when the mother’s lawyer is calling Beau and explaining in no uncertain terms that his mother has been crushed by a chandelier and he needs to come to her funeral immediately.
I've been very excited for this film and I love this kind of weird filmmaking which is why A24 flicks and similar films to this are amazing to me. Definitely get the difference in reviews and impressions of this film and I love that even more. I've noticed usually if the film is very divisive, I'll more than likely love it and that's okay! Love how we all have different tastes and love your honest takes on these films, cody!
Author of 12+ years here. I'm aware that screen writing is different from novel writing in many aspects, but every single writing class will teach you this first: *When writing your story, always revise, keep the plot simple but the characters complex. In other words - Keep it Simple, Stupid.* and some of the best novels and films out there are simple in plot, but complex in character.
Even Aster’s biggest fans shouldn’t accuse him of being a good writer. While it’s clear Aster is highly influenced by Bergman, he’s not in the same stratosphere as a storyteller.
Are you implying that this movie was complex in plot and not in character? Because if anything it was super simple in plot and absolutely complex in character...
I loved most of it. Hated the ending. But I can't stop thinking about it, so I'll end up watching it again. Anyway, really appreciate your point about the discourse around the movie. People are allowed to have their own opinion. The movie is not THAT deep, and I think a lot of the absurd stuff is just the director having fun with people's expectations of everything being meaningful (that was the comedy of it for me). Liking it doesn't make you pretentious, I mean, I liked it but I don't pretend to have understood everything about it. And disliking it doesn't make you stupid, because the movie has many flaws. Good review, man.
Very classy video Cody, it’s really disgusting that people can’t have opinions about movies, movies could work for some people and not work for others and that’s OK!
I love that this movie seems to have all my favorite reviewers divided. Some LOVE it, and some HATE it. I know you seem to be bothered by "fans" being too much on the interwebs. But I really don't think a fan base should influence your opinions on the art, positive and negative. My example being the band Tool. You may not like them, but I know a lot of people who HATE them, and their reason is the fans. I think art should be the reason you like or dislike it. Not the people who like or dislike the stuff.
@@zeynepgulsu1899 you didn't pick up on what I'm laying down. I haven't even seen the movie at all, so I have no input on anything about the movie. But he did say the fan base and discourse is why he probably won't watch Ari films later. I'd just say you don't wanna watch because Ari doesn't make films for you, not that you don't wanna watch cause the fans soured it for you. Again, this my personal view.
What other people think of a movie or what they think of me because of my thoughts doesnt bother me at all. I will always continue giving my thoughts and I think you should keep going with Ari Aster. Dont worry about what others say or think. You are a good reviewer, just need to ignore the idiots out there. Great review! Even though its three hours long, i will still watch it, because ive liked his other movies.
Lastly, I will just say that most people describe my GF and I as pretentious, hipster and, most likely, douchey for liking the shit that we like (A24 films). I don’t know, they may be right, but , at the same time, my GF and I fucking love your channel. You express yourself freely, but you also genuinely understand the complexity of human experience across all spectrums even if it doesn’t pertain to your own standing. I have to say… I can understand for your own sanity not wanting to watch any of Ari Aster’s future projects, but I’m sure as heck going to miss your reviews on them. Great video Cody.
Beau is afraid cody is miserable. Cody, I really love how you put something funny to say 😂 at the beginning of your videos when it's funny but true at the same time
I agree with every point you make here, sums up my thoughts exactly, I watched this with 8 other people in the theatre, 4 fell asleep and the other four just lost themselves in the last hour and just starting laughing at every scene, and not in a good way. I would put myself down as someone that enjoyed this and most adults can relate to anxiety in a way so the premise and themes were quite easy to pick up but if this had been a tight 2 hour cut, a lot more people would of resonated with it.
"I've been looking forward to this." - Count Dooku I do not envy you at all, Cody. The Twitter discourse has been appalling. I can't imagine being so insecure that a differing opinion would send me spiraling. Anyways, I'm checking this one out next week. I've been cautiously optimistic so I guess we'll see how it goes lol. Great video Cody!!
I agree with Cody. I just left the film, and my theater had 4 other (very annoying elderly moviegoers in it that really did annoy me quite a bit) and by the end of the film I had that thought of "we just sat through 3 hours for that?" I also had the check the watch moment and it wasn't even 40 minutes in but felt like an hour and a half
Really love the way you talk about movies that you don’t like. Too often you find critics and reviewers saying “this movie wasn’t good” etc. but you say “this movie wasn’t good for ME; and this is why.” While I really enjoyed Hereditary and loved Midsommar, I was hoping I would love this film but I find it my least favorite of his three big films. Didn’t hate it, but can’t say I loved it. Though I think this movie is very niche and will speak volumes to people who have experienced similar issues in their real life.
Cody, you mentioned that you may never watch/ review a movie of his again. Is it more because of him and the the product he creates or the extreme fan/ anti-fan conversation that surround them? I haven't seen any of his movies ( though I may watch Hereditary), but I when hear 3 hours long my brain thinks, "Hell no! Haven't they heard of editing?"
Cody says it perfectly at the end of this review. Know yourself. I know I don't need to watch this because I know I won't like it. That is me. Know yourself.
personally, this is my favorite movie of all time. it hit a lot of notes for me with the experiences I've had in my life, and I just love these types of surrealist and abstract movies that feel greater that life. most negative reviews I see of Beau Is Afraid talked about a lot of the things you mentioned but I don't think many of them were able to put it into words as well as you did. looking back at the movie now, it definitely does feel like 3 hours of pushing the same point over and over again in what could've been done in half the time, and you put it well how it really is personal preference as to whether the viewer watching thinks the story is worth being told the way it is, and it's natural that opinions would be divided for a movie like this. i was just amazed upon first watching, it was difficult to see another view. this is the first video I've seen of you and you're probably one the most respectful and real reviewers I've come across. even if you didn't enjoy it, I'm still glad you gave the movie a chance
Wow, people need to stop gatekeeping movies. Like they didn’t write the movie or had anything to do with but they believe that they have the right to belittle others who don’t agree with them? That’s just absurd. While I was infuriated with the things happening to Beau in the movie, I actually enjoyed the journey it was taking me on. I gave the movie 4 stars because I liked the story it was telling me as well as the wacky turns it took. Just because I found the story to be decent though doesn’t mean I’ll go around and make people feel small for not liking it. I literally texted my bf, “I’m glad you didn’t come see this with me because you would not have enjoyed this one bit.” But I wouldn’t belittle him for it because he’s not the target audience. It’s okay for us to like different things, we shouldn’t have to feel scared to share our opinions. I wish people knew how to have healthy debates without talking down on them. I’m so sorry that you get comments like these, it’s so rude. I have watched most of your reviews and I say that our tastes in movies are about 50/50 in comparison but that’s why I enjoy watching your reviews! I have my own thoughts and opinions and I like to see what others thought so I can have a look into the other side, not completely slam the door in their face and say they’re wrong. Sorry for the super long comment, I just hate how people need everyone to have the same exact mindset as them as if their opinions are superior. Hope you are doing self care, never let these comments get to you!
I learned this lesson after Hereditary. My friends hyped it up so much and it was meh TO ME when I saw it, so I knew what type of time he was on and the fans he'd have.
I was expecting your reaction Cody and the humorous way you expressed it ."Beau is afraid;Cody is miserable" damn funny.I saw the trailer and I thought "Nope;Cody will not like this one and its not going to be my cup of tea either".THEN you said " 3 hours long".Definitely not for me BUT I did see another reviewer who was in raptures about the movie. Both of you got your points across without making people feel small if they did/didnt like the movie,Its why I enjoy your reviews.Balance;humor and respect for others opinions.
Extremely fair and well-stated review. I'm just so sick of generic franchise fair that all feels manufactured by committee in a lab. Definitely want something unique so I'm really interested in this. These internet communities that will attack you based on your opinion be it Halloween, Scream, Superhero or A24 is such a prevalent issue. People will make these movies or franchises their whole personality and play partisan politics with the same vitriol. I'll never understand it, but keep doing you. Always appreciate your opinions even if I disagree, and just know that is the silent majority's opinion!
Good review! Would love to see how Midsommar works for you on a rewatch. I had a similar experience with that one the first time around but when watching it at home and knowing what to expect I ended up enjoying it much more. Have yet to rewatch Hereditary. Also, as crazy as it may sound, I think the director’s cut of Midsommar improves the pacing. It adds more occult scenes (and at night) which breaks things up nicely
I had a great time letting this film happen to me. I’m not quite sure what I saw but I really liked it and haven’t been able to stop thinking about. I appreciate your honesty and opinion even though it differs from mine. 👍👍 That said, I completely understand people are going to hate this film. I think folks should make up their own minds by going to see it.
I didn't love or hate the movie. All I know for certain is that it was an unique experience that should be seen on the big screen. The audio played a large part of the movie, especially the opening scene. I recommend the movie on the experience alone.
Some of the twitter comments I seen that you got were insane, especially with how much the film just seems like a fever dream e.g Eraserhead. From the trailer alone I knew it wasn't for me, but I hope whoever goes to see it enjoys it. A great video and review as usual Cody, hope the purists don't pile into the comments here🙃
That was my feelings last year with Everything Everywhere All at Once. I thought it was clearly the best film of year but I don't have blind ignorance and can easily see that it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.
I disagree with you but really appreciate your thoughts, glad your out here making reviews. I am typically a fan of art films and am sorry that you have had such bad experiences with people in the art film circle. It's all subjective and there are certainly different strokes for different folks haha. I am also sorry that you weren't able to enjoy it though, I hope you do give Ari Aster a chance in the future though, as you said his talent is truly top-tier when it comes to story directions. Cheers, and hope you are doing well.
I saw this last night and still thinking about it. The whole forest but could have been omitted. The fact that I’m still thinking about what the hell went on accomplished something… good or bad. An hour could have been trimmed off of this. Midsommar is still my fave.
You might be someone who is one of my favourite people on UA-cam but we definitely share differing opinions on movies at times. But that won't change my opinion on you or anyone. You are welcome to express your opinion in any way you want and like you said, it doesn't stop someone else from loving it either. I haven't had the pleasure (or displeasure) of watching Beau is Afraid yet (the UK has to wait until the 19th of May sadly and same goes for Renfield annoyingly) but based on my preferences and reactions to previous Ari Aster movies I am pretty sure I will love and appreciate this movie. But that being said, I would not dislike you any less for the opposite opinion. Keep voicing your opinions and hold a middle finger up to those who get butt hurt over it. I felt this way with Everything Everywhere All At Once last year which I personally didn't like but of course I never had anything against anyone who did love it since everyone has and will have different preferences, that's part of the art of cinema! Movies are so different from one to the next and you can never please everyone! As you so nicely put it 'opinions are like assholes but that doesn't mean you have to be' 😂
I’d give Midsommar another chance after this. I didn’t like it the first time (though my experience going into it was definitely NOT ideal, I had to turn it off and come back later) but I appreciated it much more on rewatch when I knew what to expect.
I really liked the first 2 hours but it went downhill fast. Overall, I still thought it was good and my theater seemed to have a great time. Everyone waited to see if there was a post credit scene

Literally was thinking “Beau is afraid, I am annoyed” the whole time
Staying mostly off from social media made my appreciation for films (or art in general) and the experiences I'm having so much more real and fun
I love it when Cody says, “I’ll get back to that later” 😅
It's been a crazy couple months lol
I loved Hereditary, but Beau and Midsomar were just bad imo.
Love the honest review, art is whatever you like, there is no right or wrong.
It seems ridiculous to me that anyone would care about someone's personal preference toward a movie. I love your breakdowns of the movies. I appreciate that you don't pander to the masses.
That's why I like your channel because you don't trash people for liking things or not liking things.
It's only on the internet that discussion is impossible. I have discussions with people in real life about movies and much more serious issues, and we're able to disagree without being assholes.
Still my most anticipated of the year! I can’t wait to watch it!
Holy shit you took the words out of my mouth with this movie
I enjoyed Beau Is Afraid -- I thought it was a movie I'll never see again, haha! I also really enjoyed your review! You are awesome, Cody! Keep up the great & honest work.
The 3 hour run time is the only reason I’m not going to the theatre for this. Hereditary is my favorite horror movie. I raved about it when it came out and was excited to see what else Aster could do. Midsomar was ok but not even close to Hereditary. So I’ll be waiting til I can watch this from the comfort of my home.
Exactly my thoughts on Aster's first two films, Hereditary is a masterpiece, imo. Very curious to see Beau.
I'm looking forward to this movie. I liked Hereditary, even more so on second viewing. Midsommar won me over instantly & is one of my personal favorite modern horror films.
I was the opposites. Loved Heridtary instantly. But didn’t like Midsommar as much until I watched the DC
My mum and I attempted to watch it two days ago, completely agree with you on everything you said. We had a similar experience to you; the first act was actually interesting and kept us intrigued, but then it just dragged and dragged. We were almost gaslighting ourselves into pretending we still wanted to know where the film was going, then I looked at the clock and realised we were only halfway through it.... couldn’t do it, we walked out and saw The Pope’s Exorcist instead 😂 At least we did have a few laughs though; that joke when the dad says “he was killed in action” and Beau replied “where is that?” made us laugh soooo hard, such a stupid but effective joke hahaha
popes exorcist wasn’t bad too
popes exorcist was so generic and boring
Imagine if he released a 3 hour version of Something about the Johnsons … THAT would be a career killer lol
wtffffff 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
oh god don’t give him any ideas
I watch and enjoy a lot of weird "art-house" movies, but they are not easy to pull off. When they don't work, they can be infuriating.
Skinamarink comes to mind, for me.
@@skyofthelivingdead - Uh oh. That one is on my "to watch" list! :)
@@Asian_Movie_Enthusiast it has absolutely 0 reason to be as long as it is
Never be bullied by those types Cody, the reason we like your reviews so much is because you break everything down as to why you found it enjoyable or not. Don't ever shy away from that because of these loud types
Supposed to be doing a lot of schoolwork but…Cody just uploaded, I’ll further procrastinate
😂
Fuck em Cody. I'm an Ari Aster fan myself but I still love hearing your takes on movies even if you dislike a movie I loved. Last year I really enjoyed Men which made it extra funny hearing how much you hated it. I agreed with a lot of your takes but still had a good time with the movie. You're always very well spoken with your likes and dislikes. People need to calm tf down with their movie tastes and let people have their own opinions.
I died at "The Menu" reference 🤣
If only people could always be this reasonable with their opinion. Sad to see people on social media resorting to personal attacks because of a movie review.
Happens all the time. Been especially ridiculous so far this year.
13:41 This dude is confining art to his expectations and actually feels entitled to what the ending of a film should be.
It’s precisely why I like directors like Ari Aster, Lars Von Trier, and Gaspar Noe. They completely take you away from what you want or expect in film and push boundaries by attempting to make the viewer think “outside the box.”
If you hated this ending, well, please don’t watch Irreversible or A Serbian Film lol
Please stick to your “happily ever after” movies.
Thanks for the insight you pretentious ass
Very intelligent reply 👍
Leave a stupid comment, get a stupid response.
I will always appreciate your honesty regardless if I agree or not with your opinion. Thank you and as a Midsommar fan, I'm curious to check this out!
Cody, keep telling it like it is Cody,. You are entitled to your opinion, and many of us enjoy hearing your opinions! Keep up the great content!
I liked it but it's still a far cry from a masterpiece like Hereditary.
I can't really agree with that. Many of my favorite films, books, etc. are complex in plot. I love a complex plot as long as it resolves logically.
Good review, man.
this instantly became one of my favorite movies ever
My introduction to Cody Leach
Even though its three hours long, i will still watch it, because ive liked his other movies.
..... I LOVE your Hellraiser T-shirt! Bravo!!
There was a perfect 2 hour movie in there somewhere, we just need a genius with tape and scissors to get in and fix it.
You make me laugh in the first two seconds? You get an instant 👍 🤣
I feel you on how long winded he is with his movies. Think I’ll wait and watch this is available on demand or streaming. As always, love your reviews!
That was a pretentious way of saying that I think you’re awesome. Keep it up dude
I have to say… I can understand for your own sanity not wanting to watch any of Ari Aster’s future projects, but I’m sure as heck going to miss your reviews on them. Great video Cody.
Love your reviews Cody. I’m seeing this movie on Tuesday and I’m very excited
Buddy I think your reviews are so real, and you honestly say it how it is
Beau is afraid cody is miserable. Cody, I really love how you put something funny to say 😂 at the beginning of your videos when it's funny but true at the same time
Are you a real person?
@@funkrobot9762 yes I am
I agree with every point you make here, sums up my thoughts exactly, I watched this with 8 other people in the theatre, 4 fell asleep and the other four just lost themselves in the last hour and just starting laughing at every scene, and not in a good way. I would put myself down as someone that enjoyed this and most adults can relate to anxiety in a way so the premise and themes were quite easy to pick up but if this had been a tight 2 hour cut, a lot more people would of resonated with it.
preach it man. glad you made this video honestly
"I've been looking forward to this." - Count Dooku
I do not envy you at all, Cody.
Really wish u would bring the background music back. That was awesome
Love your channel man 👍
As someone who loves Ari Aster movies I completely expect him to make something I might dislike.
I thoroughly enjoy your opinions. They are very well thought out and make complete sense to me personally. Don't ever change : )
Really love the way you talk about movies that you don’t like. Too often you find critics and reviewers saying “this movie wasn’t good” etc. but you say “this movie wasn’t good for ME; and this is why.”
While I really enjoyed Hereditary and loved Midsommar, I was hoping I would love this film but I find it my least favorite of his three big films.
Just finished watching Beau is Afraid and I never left a theatre so angry. I felt as though my time was wasted.
Buyer beware. You aren't guaranteed to like anything. I loved this film.
Wicked Hellraiser shirt.
I am now convinced Twitter & film Twitter needs to learn the most important word in the English dictionary called “Subjectivity”
Look at the brightside...At least he didn't decide to turn "The Strange Thing About The Johnsons" into a 3 hour film.
Good job standing your ground bro your opinion is valid. Also for everyone else take a shot every time Cody says “carte blanche”
Suck a lime everytime I say "indulgent"
Great comparison to the Menu part way through the review since I feel that’s very much the case with this movie and Ari Aster as a filmmaker
I'm glad you give your opinion and give solid reasons why you don't like it. I appreciate your take on things.
That said, I completely understand people are going to hate this film.
A great video and review as usual Cody, hope the purists don't pile into the comments here🙃
Beau is Afraid is my favorite movie of 2023 so far. But I understand why some people wouldn’t like this movie
Really enjoyed this movie, but all your points are valid.
Cody leach...I'm right there with your my friend. I myself too cannot watch his films anymore.
I really liked the first 2 hours but it went downhill fast. Overall, I still thought it was good and my theater seemed to have a great time. Everyone waited to see if there was a post credit scene
