@ Erin on start up, it sounds like the bottom end is knocking for a few seconds, I really hope i'm mistaken. Having listened repeatedly roughly 20 times, that's definately a bottom end knock. It starts @ 1:35:47 and continues on until 1:35:49 Please have this looked at as your car is gorgeous.
I hear the sound you’re talking about. To me it sounds like the standard startup timing chain rattle, common with thicker oil. I’d change to a 0w-40 oil and see how that goes. I’ve heard that adding liquid ceramic also eliminates this but not done that myself. These cars are known for the start up timing chain rattle. It would be a worthwhile investment either way, if it works fine, if the noise persists then you haven’t spent much and have eliminated a possible cause plus you’ve done an oil change which can’t be a bad thing.
you must not be familiar with the boxster engines they almost all have timing chain rattle once they get some good miles on them . it is 100% not bottom end knock bout to do the chain tensioners myself on my 2000 S
Husky boys tv yes that old 2 second bottom end knock which just goes away, hmm I’ll certainly be looking into that. Of course I have absolutely no idea what a boxer engine is, that’s why I made the comment, just to throw him off the scent.
Hi. Greetings from the UK. I am just watching your video in full on this for the first time as I am now considering changing the original silencer / muffler on my 986. I would like to ask if you have any droning sound at between 2500 & 3000 revs as I have heard that this can be the case. Also did you notice any changes in performance, and finally does it comply with emission regulations there in the US. I would like to say thanks for going to the trouble of recording this great video while doing the work.
+Robert Hooles thanks for watching! Hope you will also subscribe for me if you wouldn’t mind. There is some droning as most report. Not terrible and easily remedied by keeping the revs higher. I did just purchase some inserts for the tailpipes to help eliminate the droning. I’ll be installing them soon and of course making a DIY ;)
Help me DIY Thanks for that, I look forward to seeing a video on the inserts if you intend to record it. I have subscribed to you channel for a long time and enjoy all of your videos. Keep them coming. Thanks again.
Yes I am! I recently found out that in NC I only have to pass the safety inspection now and not the emissions. So I think I will take the cats off soon.
If you do, let me know! I live in a state where I won't need to do emission testing either. Plus, I only drive the car 2-3k miles per year. I've been looking at various exhaust options and debating...
Also, thanks again for your videos. My 2003 boxster started throwing the drive belt. Now I'm in the middle of replacing the water cooler, thermostat, alternator, and while I'm at it, changing the oil. Your videos have been awesome. Can confirm, getting to the bolts without removing the bumper is still pretty easy (and I have stupid big hands and forearms). Had it all out last year for a clutch job on my 98.
Might be easier to leave the bumper in place, honestly.
Those U-pipes, though, are a pain in the arse for certain. :P

I'm in Raleigh area. To like to show you my Porsche 986
Do you experience any drone on the highway? Also could you update the link for the exhaust you got? Appreciate your videos man!
No drone on the highway after my fix. Check that video! Link updated, thanks. Hope you're a subscriber!
@@HelpMeDIY Thank you! And I am! I really appreciate you replying to this comment, so much so that I just bought one of your shirts. Keep rocking dude!
@@TheRealijw Fantastic. It's shipping out tomorrow!
nice effort, i decided to watch all your pain :P
+shadowofthepast2008 hahaha thanks I think? 🤣
Damn that looks like a pain in the ass but we love the sound of cool exhaust
+Sean Denny turns out most people can do it without removing the rear bumper cover so it’s really not that bad.
@ Erin
on start up, it sounds like the bottom end is knocking for a few seconds, I really hope i'm mistaken.
Having listened repeatedly roughly 20 times, that's definately a bottom end knock.
It starts @ 1:35:47 and continues on until 1:35:49
Please have this looked at as your car is gorgeous.
I'll look into that Carmen! Thanks for watching.
Edd Herring pretty sure Husky was agreeing with you and addressing his comment to Carmen who had the original comment...
@@HelpMeDIY Have you made a video for the inserts, I am having a droning too at 2-3 RPM
@@prestontrager3339 Yes, check my Boxster playlist or search for "no more drone" or something like that :)
Exhaust paste to make it seal up properly?
Good video tho :)
+charles ward thanks! 🍻
Thanks for posting. Sounds fantastic. Link for new exhaust?
+ramabamaboomboom they are all over eBay for $250. Just search for 986 exhaust
So it's been close to a year. Are you still happy with the exhaust?
I've bought all the parts, plus a bunch of tools, and still saved $2k from the dealer quote.
James Rogers that’s great to hear! Hopefully you bought a couple through my links ;)
James Rogers Also, I just started a way to support my channel at patreon.com/helpmediy if you’re interested 😉 All proceeds go right back into channel content!
i fitted the same in 30mins didnt need to remove the bumper
+townzy 101 yes I learned it’s not necessary. Saves a lot of time.
@@HelpMeDIY good vidoes thro ....i decat mine. i have 3.2s did the clutch on it very easy job and alternator is very easy as well... keep up the vidoes mate
@@townz2 will do! Thanks for watching 🍻
I watch to learn. Maybe.
+@timdrain4027 👍
You don't have to remove the spoiler and rear bumper. Pre-soak the nuts and bolts the day before. 1-2 hour job. Easy job.
+Rudolf Wonderone correct!
If you have to reuse stuff like clamps, soak them overnight in Metal Rescue.
+Adam Miller never heard of that. I’ll have to look into it. Thanks!
Is it really worth the effort? It’s not going to make a difference in performance. I could see if you were putting headers on but not to make it loader. It isn’t an S
+Larry Kramer it’s the cheapest way to make it sound decent. I’d do a full SOUL exhaust if money were no object. Or if SOUL gives me one to make another video. Wink wink
good job
but i would rather just cut them off and run strait pipes
thats just to much to get the same result
+time traveler are we there yet that’s always an option!
found a faster way tot undo the u pipe. just cut the 2 clamps it will slide right off
+@nickharx5361 yes I would buy new clamps and do that if I were ever to do that again! 😁🍻
amazing job! use some wd or penetrating spray so you don't stip/break bolts or screw heads... learned this the worng way
even on those plastic fasteners, makes all the difference, second i bought for 4 bucks from china a tool to get under them and lift them. use it every time.
+David K thanks!
@@davidkurajda what's the tool called or where can I get one? Thanks in advance
@@SavorExploreAdventures wd40 is oil in spray can
@@davidkurajda you mentioned buying "for 4 bucks from china a tool to get under them"
Could have done an exhaust on my truck by the time he got the spoiler trim off.
Jerez, why don't you edit or speed up sections of your video. Gave up after watching you mess about taking the rear upper spoiler section off. Sorry
Got it! Nice idle but in rotation sounds like a trawler. Disappointed.
+Rui Martins ah bummer.
You could save yourself a ton of pain by buying some new exhaust clamps and some suitable fasteners. Jeez man at least use a hacksaw to shorten the bolts for the hanger bracket.
+Graham Essen yes, both solid ideas 😂
Cut the bolts down and not use all the washers!
+Dr. Joe Davis, Ph.D. I really need to get a metal cutting bandsaw!
You guys just have a lot more rust and all your parts I guess that’s the only good part about living in California so stuff doesn’t rust don’t mention all the bad parts I know crazy people. I paid $7.12 on a road trip that’s crazy leader ship. I think you need a bead blaster to clean up all those parts.
+Sean Denny I hear ya!
Sounds the same
+networkbits not at all IRL
The gloves are gay dude
Very helpful. Thank you.
I bet you wish you had got new brackets and put them on before you mounted the exhaust. Good show though and your very patient man
Sound so so good
+MrMarineMaster 😍🍻
It
Sound pretty good
+MrMarineMaster it does! 🍻
Just a heads up, that WD was just a waste. It won’t do anything for you. It’s not a penetrating oil. You want thrust..
+SJ FK I think you’re right there
pain full to watch! OMG are YOU an ametuer ! uses some heat fr a torch to get them apart / off!
get a pipe expander next time !
And clean up the pipes , ID and OD w/ emery cloth and use never seize !
What a stupid system Porsche uses! should use flange joints and clamps that fit over the ends ! you need to use the right size, length hardware and USE stainless bolts, nuts, and washers! or titanium !
those bent pipe sections ? use new and stainless! uses new clamps
all that pipe work incl new mufflers should have been mounted measured marked where to start / stop the ceramic and then disassembled sent to
Swain tech in NY for their "white lightning " ceramic coating ! it blocks 55% of heat !
+@jackdale9249 yes, I’m very much an amateur. Kind of the whole point of the channel 😂
