Bob was so cutting edge both musically and lyrically. Even his gruffest, harshest and most poorly recorded songs are both thoughtful and vocally audible. Always was in a league of his own.
I grew up listening to this song upstairs in my parents house. I came home from work in high school, and my Dad was listening to this album. This was in the early 70's. I lived in the Detroit Metro Area. So cool!
gwick55- My parents came home one day finding me laying on my back next to the stereo, beating my hands on on the floor to Heavy Music. They were into Dean Martin and polkas. They just didn't understand. :-) (DMA also.)
The first concert I ever attended was Bob Seger. It was early 70’s. 3 dollars. I was hooked on music. His band were incredible. That was his best period. He wasn’t a pop sensation yet. They worked for their pay.
Bob is an incredibe performer aand Mongrel was a excellent record. I used to go to see him all over the south. He was one of the best acts at Atlanta Pop II in 1970. He did, as the fellow said, always gave his audience 110%. Pep Perine was an awesome drummeer(RIP) Dan Honnaker was an inspiring bassist and Dan Watson? was a perfect compliment to the Seger sound. I met Bob once and found him to be genuine, thooughtful and in control of his ego. In fact, a really nice guy.
Pep Perrine which is spelled with 2 R's not one. Is the best drummer ever. I remember him some sometimes doing drum solo Bob, Dan, and the others would walk off stage leave it all to Pep
And the Pic on the back of the album cover was @ The Cincinnati Pop Festival @ Crosley Field , We went on just after Mott the Hoople and Grand Funk Railroad went on after Us !
the don't have the OH! DOH! WOW! emoji on youtube or it'd be all the fuck over this comment. HOLY SHIT A WET DREAM!!! MOTT, BOB + MARK FARNER AND GFR all in ONE day? I would've literally shat myself I imagine. WOW wow. WOW.
Love that drum kit. Never seen an overhead 90° bass drum kit before. (except for Tommy Lee's "roller coaster" kit) Dual, even. :0 Kinda like the old JBL speakers of old. (bass sound recurve panels inside the box.)(1970's-80's) God. All those cords on the stage. Who tripped on a drum kit microphone cable?
I saw the early Seger many times with Pep Perrine on the kit and the late, great Dan Honaker on bass. The energy was incredible, something he never duplicated with Silver Bullet.
Please Bob, Punch Andrews and Capitol/Universal put out all of Seger's early albums on CD. These recordings are too good to leave them on out of print albums.
never gonna happen. but you are so RIGHT. This song is amazing. All his stuff is. The day I finally got ahold of Back in '72, and Noah - each of the difficult to find lps - Man, can't forget the fascination. the goosebumps!!
Pep Perinne, he made his own drum kits back in those days he played with Bob and he was kick-ass ~ check out Ramblin' Gamblin' Man 1968 ~ Bob was a wanna be soul/R&B singer, but Motown didn't take him seriously :(
Wild Wednesday June 1970 at Sherwood Forest Bob Seger, with his boots up over his jeans and a red/white/blue lucite body guitar, anybody remember him tearing thru all the songs on the Mongrel LP after it quit raining?
We saw the System at Flint's Sherwood Forest shortly after Mongrel was out. Bob said during the show they had some time left and dropped this song on to fill the record. And he did say it was live. I can still see the Leslie speakers whirlin' and Pep slammin them two 'ear toms'. Every Seger show was balls out-no compromisin' rock and roll. We were all shocked, as we grew older, that only us Michigan folks (and Florida) knew how incredible Bob was. Until Live Bullet.
I saw Bob and The Last Heard at Sherwood Forest on July 23, 1967 along with The Pack, The Rationals, SRC etc.. They interrupted the concert to warn people not to go through Detroit on the way home. The Detroit Riot had begun.
He always rocked hard, always had great bands. True story- my freshman year in High School 1966 very first time I ever went to a dance , Catholic Central H.S. in Detroit. First rock band I ever heard. He played all over Detroit area, all of us were glad when he finally hit it big. For great late 60's stuff, look on Detroit Pirate Radio, lot of great rock bands here in late 60;s enjoy
GOSH ! That was my 4th album i bought with my pocket money in England in 1978 (i was then 11yo) for just 1 Pound, all mint and sealed ! Dad was totally crazy : it was all gone in France and no chance to get, still in our times... Just a NUGGET :)
Excelente, Excelente, Excelente, con el paso de los años me sigue pareciendo una versión Excelente, una de las canciones que marcaron mi adolescencia y la sigo teniendo presente y este disco de Bob Seger es maravilloso.
@michisade1 I would say Mongrel is the System's best effort as well, though I don't think any of the songs on it top 2+2 or Ramblin' Gamblin' Man. It's just a very consistent album--not a clunker on it! It's interesting that they never had a follow-up. As for this song--an undiscovered classic, in my opinion.
I'm sorry, but this HAS to be 'live'. Legend has it Seger just added a crowd/audience sounds in the beginning and end but the actual music was recorded in the studio. Sorry...this is 'live'!
Pep Perrine on drums here . There was no better drummer than Pep. Pep married a girlfriend of mine. Not long after I introduced Pep g to my girlfriend Marlana. I like this rendition than any other
Listen to him here, absolutely fantastic. Listen to him now. Of course he has aged, but His sound today is totally from cigarettes. He cant hit a note now. If you think I am wrong, Just listen to Cat Stevens, AKA yusef. same age . and sounds no different. Bob should thank his lucky stars hes not dead yet..
WOW! I didn't think could even really attempt this classic!
Bob smashes it! Tina would approve!
Nothing in rock and roll is more driving than this.
They had the baddest drum set up ever. It takes a lot of balls to attempt to cover this monster song. Gotta love it.
BOB SEGER HAD NO FORMAL TRAINING FOR MUSIC IT WAS MAINLY SELF TAUGHT.😅
I think seger is the only person who could do justice to a cover
First saw Bob in 1967 at Mother's Teenage Nightclub in East Tawas Michigan. We talked between sets! A true Michigander!
I was so fortunate to see The Bob Seger System many times in the 70’s !! 🔥🌺💐🍃❣️🍃💐🌺🔥
Bob was so cutting edge both musically and lyrically. Even his gruffest, harshest and most poorly recorded songs are both thoughtful and vocally audible. Always was in a league of his own.
played my H.S. and saw this cat 23 times.

I wish often that Bob would release videos of his recordings. The planet need this. ❤️
The song was recorded in Studio ...I was There ...Worked for Bob back in the Day 68 thru 72
Sure has a live vibe to it... Must have been a great time.

Great LP I have owned my copy since it was released in 1970. Drummer Pep Perine made his own Drum Kit back in his days with Bob.
Love that drum kit. Never seen an overhead 90° bass drum kit before. (except for Tommy Lee's "roller coaster" kit) Dual, even. :0
Kinda like the old JBL speakers of old. (bass sound recurve panels inside the box.)(1970's-80's)
God. All those cords on the stage. Who tripped on a drum kit microphone cable?
hahahahahaha awesome!
Oh how I LOVE this version of this song. Always have. It's insanely good. Dude is matchless. damn.
Best Vocal performance of his career.
I saw the early Seger many times with Pep Perrine on the kit and the late, great Dan Honaker on bass. The energy was incredible, something he never duplicated with Silver Bullet.
'You gotta reach on down to yer soul, yer itty-bitty Deeeetroit Mictchigan soul....."
Tom Engel Seager really paid his dues.
Please Bob, Punch Andrews and Capitol/Universal put out all of Seger's early albums on CD. These recordings are too good to leave them on out of print albums.

Mongrel is available on cd. Also Ms. Lucy Blue. However Brave New Morning, Noah Back In 72 and Seven are not and that’s just plain criminal.
I have most his old stuff on cd. This picture looks like he sold out tiger stateum. Nice but I hated getting stuck behind one of those stanchions.
Takes everything nowadays all apart. Best song with a good kick...Enough to keep you going. And I keep going....wow
Good Gawd Bob channels some James Brown at the end , I wore the grooves off this album.
Seen him many times , but never saw him do this tune
Check out the bass lines just before the choruses. And the funky break at 5:09. Amazing! I remember when they all traveled in a white van.
That is the craziest drum kit I have ever seen! I DIG IT!! That guy can play!
Pep Perinne, he made his own drum kits back in those days he played with Bob and he was kick-ass ~ check out Ramblin' Gamblin' Man 1968 ~ Bob was a wanna be soul/R&B singer, but Motown didn't take him seriously :(
I love this song & the Mongrel album. I found it back in the day in a store in Jackson Michigan.
Me too. Jackson. Bob Seger, Nugent, Brownsville, MC5, Stooges Third Power SRV Rock On
Wild Wednesday June 1970 at Sherwood Forest Bob Seger, with his boots up over his jeans and a red/white/blue lucite body guitar, anybody remember him tearing thru all the songs on the Mongrel LP after it quit raining?
so extremely jealous. thank you for sharing that beautiful memory. can't even IMAGINE seeing him do this live. WOW

WOW !
I've been a Bob Seger fan since the late 70's and never got a chance to see him live. Seems he never tours europe.
