Drawn to Life is a major reason why I love writing stories in the first place. The series was my first exposure into a kind of story that was genuinely gripping, charming, and surprisingly emotional. I like coming up with characters, their personalities, and their dynamics with each other thanks to the games and I’m so happy people still remember them as fondly as I do.
i beat the second game on the collection when i was younger and even the censored version of the ending still broke me, and was probably the first time i actually felt something tied to a fictional character on that level i cant imagine what it was like for the other people that witnessed the original version in real time
Yeah, I remember the ending of the second game being Mike falling from a tree. Hearing that the original had scenes of them in a car crash hit me like a truck
this is pretty late but i got the original ending and it was more confusing than shocking i got more hung up on the whole all a dream aspect and it pissed me off
1:09:59 My guess is the villagers and the hero were all fake, but the creator himself was not, he recreated the world from his imagination, perhaps even taking the Raposa themselves and giving them physical form, thus allowing them to exist.
Fun fact about the first game(SPOILERS): After the cutscene where Wilfre kills The Mayor if you quit the level you can go where he was attacked and he looks like he still breathing but you can't do anything
Drawn to life... Pokemon mystery dungeon... Klonoa... Digimon hacker's memory(rated t for teen but still based on a kids franchise)... I love kids games with surprisingly depressing stories. Gotta be one of my favorite genders.
The Impact this franchise had on my childhood is undeniable. I remember spending hours grinding for coins and lives in banya fields, memorizing cheat codes, and finding glitches that could get me through levels faster. Every time I played, I learned something new. Like how I fell through a pit right before phase two of Wilfre and soft-locked my game. That was a fun reset. The Next Chapter is weird for me tho. I just could not stand the ending as a kid. I definitely appreciate it more now. My biggest praise for it has always been the soundtrack. And because of them I got more into story driven franchises. I’m so glad you covered the franchise. When I saw you were working on this video, I was ecstatic. Can’t wait to see what other games you cover!
The ending of the second one is quite funny looking back, because in the 2000s many urban legends where about shows and videogames with a ending where the protagonist was in a coma all this time. And turns out it does happen in Drawn to Life of all things.
22:00 He probably has an extra page of the book of life hidden away somewhere, which is how all the shadow wasn't completely vanished when you restored the book, he probably finally gotten good at the whole drawing thing and made that monstrosity with the last inch of space on the page... You know, this explains Wilfre's wasteland in the next game... Perhaps even Aldark from the final title...
6:37 Basically he's disobeyed you (the creator) and doodled in the book of life thinking he can do better, his creations came out as twisted shadow creatures and then out of spite tore out the pages and scattered them to the wind, he was promptly exiled. as you would expect.
god, i remember being REALLY excited for two realms when it was initially leaked, as well as sitting in a call in a DtL server upon release. i hate to see one of my favorite series's last entry be... that THING.
The car crash ending was a defining moment of my childhood and one of the first times a video game got me emotionally invested in the story and characters. I loved the 2 main DTL ds games more than any other games I had at the time, and am beyond glad I had the original ending. The tree just wouldn't have had the same weight
i gotta say, drawn to life and next chapter are some of the best looking games on the ds imo and the music id very much say is some of my absolute favorite videogame music of all time. Those games mean a lot to me and im happy that so many others appreciate them too. Also about the final boss fight in the first game, the reason you werent able to damage wilfre in phase two is because you are ony able to hit him when he is moving across the screen, not when he is attacking, it took me awhile to figure it out.
I remember having so much trouble with the final Wilfre fight as a kid, even coming back to the game recently it was still tough. Drawn to Life to me feels like a mixture of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and Scribblenauts. You have the platforming and creativity of scribblenauts, and the storytelling and music direction of PMD. The ending lyrics will always get a tear out of me, much like "Don't Ever Forget" does from Explorers. And don't even bet me started on the ending of chapter 2, my brain was not ready for that.
Okay after fully finishing the video I am thoroughly upset that I played the Wii version as a kid. I'm an absolute sucker for emotional gut punches like that, and now I really want to know what I would've thought about that ending as a kid. Either way I think I'm gonna playthrough the two DS games really soon now. Excellent video!
I remember crying tears of absolute joy when I heard the announcement of a new entry. The ending of “the next chapter” really got to me as seeing how everyone basically was Thanos Snapped. And I was so excited to see what would happen next. Now that we got a horrible low effort new entry on switch, the series will have forever ended on a sour note.
Ah, my favourite corporate combination "Here is an IP that we own. Audience is kind of niche. Let's make a rushed game and get rid of the defining features. Nobody wanted to buy it, guess the playerbase moved on." My lecturer actually explained this to me with a friend of his who got EA'd (by EA) A lot of game publishers are geared in ways that only let them see payouts over a certain size. Niche games that make a small, stable profit are generally treated as a waste of resources. Through the eyes of the bean counters, game studios working on niche games is manpower that isn't being dedicated to the biggest games, where the same amount of labour can create exponentially more revenue.
10:06 They DEFINITELY could've chosen better textured for the wood, *_like the actual wood beams on the buildings everywhere._* I never got their choice of colour, they could've at least gone without the eyes....
35:10 Doodle Squidward, he just kinda scurried off grumbling grumpily after Patrick drew him, he was never a threat in the original series, this however is hilarious.
Easily one of the most underrated youtubers at this moment. So much effort, care and a good balance of seriousness en humor. Love these retrospectives!
This was an amazing video! Beautiful analysis of the entire series, and I'm so glad you took the time to make this video so in depth! Immediate subscription, and I can't wait to see what else you end up making!
Besides Pokemon Diamond, Drawn To Life was the game I wanted really badly once I got a Nintendo DS. It lived up to my hype once I was able to play and beat it, and the story is one of the reasons why I love stories in games and writing stories so much! Drawn to Life is also the only franchise I have completely collected (unless if some of the games I own are one-offs, lol) but my Next Chapter version has the tree ending instead of the car crash. Sometimes I wish I could time travel and see the look on my face when I realized there was a darker and canon ending... This is an amazing (and hilarious) retrospective, thank you for taking the time to make it! Even if we don't get a game after Two Realms, I'm just happy the franchise exists and is still talked about to this day.
This is a great video but 12:58 hurts me inside because that bush there contains ammo if you ground pound it. It took me a few playthroughs to figure that one out, too. EDIT: 21:24 Oh I know about this!! I've spent an unhealthy amount of time looking into this game's code. There IS a 4-4 in the game's code, but it's almost the same as 4-5, with the exception of the second screen being longer at the start.
Dope retrospective man! The amount of work you've put into this really shows, and you've done an amazing job! Subscribed, and looking forward to more content from you!
I was trying so very hard not to compare you to Scott the Woz as having inspiration from another creator while having your own identity is valid but then you freaking BRING UP THE THERAPIST GUY LMAO
1:18:53 They could've even released an incredibly tiny game and released a bunch of DLCs, that way it makes more money AND it's good *_AND_* they can even have the time to ensure it doesn't implode while exploding.
not sure if anyone mentioned it, but you do have a secondary attack underwater, the slide you can buy it once you have the token, you can slide mid swim onto enemies and i believe the boss too this is also very good for countering the attack of the final boss
You know. It's not often I get a video about one of my hyperfixations that teaches me new things. And reminds me of why I love them. But yours just did. Thank you.
DTL speedrunner ToolAssistedTAS here (guy who found the pause glitch in TNC ds) We actually managed to interview Jerimiah, and David Franco (Sound lead) for the DTL games and its sad to see what happened to the games. Edit: just got to the interview section of the video and that was us! Edit again: i was the guy who actually got the interview set up by asking them.
8:35 That might also be another limitation thing, I'm not certain so don't quote me on this and I'm no DS or any hardware technician, but I think the DS has a colour limit, a very high one, but a limit nonetheless, and they give you a LOT of colours.
Drawn to life needs more attention towarfs their ds entries tbh. As you say they aren't masterpieces but deserve the respect for their ambitions. Also shoutout to the time i talked about the plot of DTL the next chapter in my english oral exam without name dropping it and getting an 8 lol.
59:58 Baki Baaah as in a sheep sound and kai, like that bug god guy from Dragonball. Baki. Also that's the name of the species, not the captain himself, I honestly have no idea how he's a ghostly pirate captain whos such a giant threat when prior they were just typical pest creatures, not sapient beings capable of conscious thought and planning.
Oh my god this was absolutely fantastic, I had high expectations fot it, but this video blew me away!!! Absolutely worth the wait. Random thoughts: It's amazing that you covered every game so well!!! I was scared of it being centered around The Next Chapter DS ending, but I was happy to be proven wrong. I was going to share the video in the Drawn to Life Discord to help a bit but I saw that you had already done it. I didn't found the hidden flower, but I loved the Chandelure at 21:05 and the Tentacool at 51:54. For The Next Cahpter Wii, I used the premade drawing templates that the game offers. It defeats the purpose, but drawing with the Wiimote sucks anyway and it looks way better than stamps. Oh, and I also got stuck in the sky level. :-( The final boss is not a revived Wilfre, it's "Giant Scribble Monster", created by Circi in a failed attempt to bring back Wilfre. The Scott the Woz therapist cameo was cool since I can see that get some inspiration from him. Didn't you find it weird that Galileo is missing from The Next Chapter DS? I am Spanish, and on the Spanish version of The Next Chapter, Samuel is named Galileo instead of Samuel. Yeah, Two Realms is an irredeemable piece of garbage. The touch controls were added through a later update, they didn't work when I played it. Maybe that's why they failed you at first. Not that there is any point in drawing in this game anyway. The speed boost melons in the overworld are bonkers, and I DID think the core gameplay was horrible. Wilfre IS in Two Realms. He is the hooded Raposa from 1:22:58, and a cliffhanger to a sequel that won't ever exist. Oh, and quick heads up, you misspelled Two Realms as Twin Realms in the video chapters. THAK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!
As many problems as Two Realms may have (or moreso definitely does), I am happy that they actually went through the effort to continue the story in some regard and actually go off of the original ending while still trying to tie together loose ends, and you typically would not expect a product like the one that was delivered to actually take such things in consideration. It's like, if this is the end of the series, we still have two good games and something akin to a happy ending to the story. And if we do get another game, maybe we could see the series truly evolve instead of devolve (and I do think Two Realms wouldn't be all too bad as a canon mobile spinoff in that regard).
15:09 I'll have you know there is a strategy....................................................................... What you expected me, someone who played the game during my childhood and still looks up stuff about it to know the strategy? Pfft! You'd have better luck asking the devs... no really... I'm near certain they're the only ones that know.
Oh man this series. I remember getting the first game for my birthday the year it released, and I had absolutely no clue what to expect. I quickly became attached to the villagers and their story, and I found myself getting emotional from a game for the first time with that ending song montage with Mari and Jowee. It easily had become my favorite game at that time, even if technically it wasn't the most innovative I had played up to that point. I remember deeply hoping for a sequel, though I figured an obscure little title like this would never get one. When the sequel did finally get announced and I played through it, I did indeed get emotional, but not in the way that the game expected me to be. The grand plot twist of the events of the two games being a coma dream of what was previously a joke character infuriated me, it felt like everything I had done and the care I invested into the various villagers was for nothing. It felt like a betrayal, and it actually caused me to quit videogames altogether for a while. At that point I was afraid to get invested into anything new out of the fear that it would end in the same sort of twist. I know a lot of people have a good deal of love for how emotional the ending of the Next Chapter is, but for me it only caused me to develop an eternal distaste for the "it was all a dream" trope in stories. All that said, great video! Glad to see creators on UA-cam talk about underrated titles like this.
This was one of those games I played as a kid that just hit me hard. I was so invested I remember playing it multiple times just cause how much I enjoy it. I'm glad it was part of my childhood and I feel like it was necessary for growing up. Also this explains so much cause i played both versions and was confused why the ending changed.
drawn to life: the next chapter has been one of my favorite games for basically my entire life at this point. i've played it time and time again and explored every inch of it as a kid. when two realms was announced, i was beyond hopeful. i got it day-one, and even set up my drawing tablet and laptop into a jumbo-DS to play it on! i have four hours in it on steam, all from one afternoon.
1:12:40 My guess is he's the REAL drawn to life version of the devil, Wilfree is merely Mike's interpretation, with the Raposa being how he views the angels, Wilfre being one that rebeled and paid the ultimate price, now this is the real battle... and of course because the franchise was dieing anyway, it's way more washed up than Mike's imaginary hypothesizing of how this showdown would go. Edit: I say showdown forgetting the lack there of.
The ending to The Next Chapter had a huge impact on me too, but in an opposite sense. It taught that stories could be bad, that just because something was created and published doesn't mean it has some greater authority. But that makes me appreciate good stories all the more. (It wasn't bad because it was dark, but because it suddenly turned a joke character from the first game into the most important person)
I like how you said drawn to life had mini games for world building and then said "newer games dont do this" and then showed pokemon scarlet and violet which is actually a game with really good world building minigames
Wow, I wasn't expecting to be as engaged in this video as I was. I was more a Scribblenauts person, but I have previously played DTL The Next Chapter (DS), and I really liked it. I ought to play through the first game sometime, but I'm not really sure I'd go beyond that. I hope that someday, DTL can come back as good as it once was, although I'm not hopeful, considering 5th Cell is gone. Good video though; thanks for reminding me of this game! Also, yeah, TNC's ending hit hard. I don't think I really got to understand it when I first played considering I was young and also hadn't played the first game, but I'm sure if I had played DTL1 and were a bit older when I played TNC, it would have hit harder.
Its so funny to me that i look at my reccomended and see a drawn to life video and realise it was about an hour ago. I think this is one of my favorite franchise ever, the second one being my favorite, and the last one being my least favorite. great stories and nice character, the second game's ending song souding way too sad. thank you for making your video sire
by second game i meant the next chapter on the ds, i havent played the wii version, but it does sound like a wii u version would be better with the gamepad
1:17:54 Unfortunately even if they wanted to give refunds, I'm sure at that point they wanted to, they couldn't, they were literally going under. They threw a damaged leaking crate of cargo to shore from a sinking ship so to speak.
Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter was utter peak I forgot how good it was. Played it around 5-7 according to it's release date, I have not felt the vibes of something like what that game emitted I think ever since, whoever did the soundtrack too, man. Yeah I actually think what the DS and so had to offer actually had better experiences then nowadays, not just on nostalgia, I mean there were still B grade studios making unique projects like 5th cell. That Robot boss literally stumped me for months though what a pisslord.
The original Drawn to Life series on the DS was my childhood. I remember the game fondly, and it gives me so much nostalgia when I see/hear anything of it. It does pain me a bit that Scribblenauts got the better deal in the end, but both game series have their strengths
Part of why I feel like it's okay that this series won't be continued is because accepting that not everything lasts forever is such a major theme in the ending of the next chapter. We got a conclusive and impactful ending ABOUT accepting the end. If it meant anything to us as kids, it would be weird for us to not be at peace with where the series is now.
11:10 you... don't... just do it simultaneously..? It's not that hard... but then again I played this game like heck as a kid while my brain was developing... multitasking on the DS specifically might just be part of my dna at this point.
Even though Two Realms brought me, another Drawn to Life fan, hope for my OC, who happens to also be my creation hero (yes, I keep rambling about my stupid OC in several DtL videos. Deal with it), I already accepted the fate of the franchise and developed my hero’s story about accepting the loss of her home world. It’s just a life lesson we have to learn sometimes, to move onwards after some grief.
@@spudwilkins9440In the games, I admit that I started off with the girl template, and then did some editing from there. But outside the game, I draw my hero all the time.
"yes, I keep rambling about my stupid OC in several DtL videos. Deal with it" If you really were so confident and non-chalant about doing this you wouldn't need to put this in your comments. It's very cringy. Specifically because you come off as very self-centered telling random people about this instead of, you know, your friends? People that actually would care?
I still stand that my favourite game is Drawn To Life: The Next Chapter. The story hit me somewhere that I think no other game will ever hit me. Some games came close like Omori. But that ending and everything surrounding it. Maybe because of nostalgia aswell I still really like the gameplay, but still I love what was said about the game. Amazing content.
There is one objectively great thing about two realms. On the soundtrack they included an uncompressed version of Real Life. Don’t know if it actually appears in game because I don’t think I can stand the pain of finish it, but still.
I hope you all enjoy this video :) Thank you Southern New Hampshire University for sponsoring today's video!!! Kickstart your gaming career today with some of the most affordable prices and convenience: snhu.edu/jeffcompass

Isnt that kinda creepy then that the supposed "Hero" left the Mayor for dead knowing he was still hanging on
I saw that too, actually I think I left the level to investigate that area where he fell, but there was nothing I could do.

This is definitely the kind of game franchise I’d been all over as a kid.

37:53 From a lore standpoint, yes it's the next chapter chapters 2 and 3, from a marketing standpoint...
what the F---- were they thinking?
8:35 That might also be another limitation thing, I'm not certain so don't quote me on this and I'm no DS or any hardware technician, but I think the DS has a colour limit, a very high one, but a limit nonetheless, and they give you a LOT of colours.
Thank you so much for covering Drawn to Life! I wish the 2 ds games got the attention they deserve, THEY’RE SO GOOD
Drawn to life needs more attention towarfs their ds entries tbh. As you say they aren't masterpieces but deserve the respect for their ambitions.
Also shoutout to the time i talked about the plot of DTL the next chapter in my english oral exam without name dropping it and getting an 8 lol.
20:56 Ah, I see your the role of a Zeus-like deity.
Minus the constant lightning smiting.
21:00 Welcome Ba- ohok.
Underrated channel af
Thank you :)
Random thoughts:
It's amazing that you covered every game so well!!!
The final boss is not a revived Wilfre, it's "Giant Scribble Monster", created by Circi in a failed attempt to bring back Wilfre.
My pleasure to make it! I’m glad you enjoyed!!!
i haven't thought about these games in forever
1:10:45 No need to sugarcoat, everyone already knows the harsh truth.
honestly thought i made this series up in my mind having last played it 10+ years ago and never hearing a soul mention it since then
I'm so glad that you made a video of this cuz I thought this game was a forgotten game but now it's brought back so thank you for that.
Amazing video I absolutely love the drawn to life series
you've got my subscription, amazing video about an icon of my childhood that's gone unnoticed for a very long time
15:09 I'll have you know there is a strategy.......................................................................
What you expected me, someone who played the game during my childhood and still looks up stuff about it to know the strategy? Pfft! You'd have better luck asking the devs...
no really...
I'm near certain they're the only ones that know.
A childhood friend of mine who I played a lot of DS games with didn't let me play his copy of Drawn to Life.
Now I know what it's about! Cool
Hi Rasmus
Oh hi Jeff
I loved this series so damn much, and I still do. It's sad to see the most recent game be so bad, but I'm glad that the franchise at least isn't dead.
drawn to life was my childhood, thank you for shedding light onto these underated games
My pleasure!
Thank you so much for going in-depth about one of my favorite game series' ever
The bats are A BIG PAIN even worse with the fight with Deadwood, the most hardest fight in my opinion.
I noticed the texture glitch too, this game IS BROKEN
drawn to life: the next chapter has been one of my favorite games for basically my entire life at this point. i've played it time and time again and explored every inch of it as a kid. when two realms was announced, i was beyond hopeful. i got it day-one, and even set up my drawing tablet and laptop into a jumbo-DS to play it on!
i have four hours in it on steam, all from one afternoon.
I play the Wii version and it was my childhood so I love it.
1:19:24 That would've even been less paid sprite work right there and resources that could've gone into making it good.
This video deserves WAY more views.
My pleasure!!!
by second game i meant the next chapter on the ds, i havent played the wii version, but it does sound like a wii u version would be better with the gamepad
Drawn to life is one of the very first games I played on ds it holds a special place in my heart
As a Scribblenauts fan, I keep picturing a dinosaur whenever Edison Yan is mentioned.
The original Drawn to Life series on the DS was my childhood. I remember the game fondly, and it gives me so much nostalgia when I see/hear anything of it. It does pain me a bit that Scribblenauts got the better deal in the end, but both game series have their strengths
Amazing video Jeff
Hi Leanne thank you!!!!! :)
Also, I bursted out in laughter when you insulted Wilfre for “attempting to demonetize” your video 😂
Princess Pixel is the hero you drew?
@@spudwilkins9440In the games, I admit that I started off with the girl template, and then did some editing from there. But outside the game, I draw my hero all the time.
"yes, I keep rambling about my stupid OC in several DtL videos. Deal with it"
If you really were so confident and non-chalant about doing this you wouldn't need to put this in your comments. It's very cringy. Specifically because you come off as very self-centered telling random people about this instead of, you know, your friends? People that actually would care?
8:28 ikr especially with the fact it's probably possible to put more than 25 colors on the charactdr
can I get a link to the jeremiah slaczka interview?
My favorite game...
The best game...
I haven't found a game that I liked more YET. and I'm even counting mods of games in this list at this point!
im unfortunately a tree household, i had no idea there was a car crash ending till I looked up the end song on youtube as a child
Great video!
Yeah, I remember the weirdly dark ending of the DS version. Surprised how many people didn’t know about this ending
Full Circle, from scribblenauts, to drawn to life!
I was obsessed with this game. The art was so pretty. The music. The character. The story omg.
While Drawn to Life may be dead, maybe some indie game will be inspired by it
I still stand that my favourite game is Drawn To Life: The Next Chapter. The story hit me somewhere that I think no other game will ever hit me. Some games came close like Omori. But that ending and everything surrounding it. Maybe because of nostalgia aswell I still really like the gameplay, but still I love what was said about the game. Amazing content.
There are so many cutesy indie games these days with dark themes that the next chapter fits right in with them
There is one objectively great thing about two realms. On the soundtrack they included an uncompressed version of Real Life. Don’t know if it actually appears in game because I don’t think I can stand the pain of finish it, but still.
