    Great video! I have put a Eminence Ragin Cajun in my SC XD and sounds very much as is in this video, it changed the voices into more 'British' direction. Although still quite Fenderish and nice. And way louder as the stock speaker! Probably the best upgrade you can get.
    But. In my SC X2 I put an Eminence Copperhead and that I find for this amp maybe even a better upgrade. It keeps the character of the amp much closer to the original. But not that ice peaky high as the stock, but still very 'American' voice. I like the balance low-mid-high fitting very well fitting to this amp with the Copperhead. Very musical. Also more decibels as the stock, noticeably less as the RC.
    I use voice 1 and clean channel mostly, with a Strat.
    I also tried Legend 1058, which is close to the copperhead, but has bit more warmth, but bit less Fendery twang. And tried the Jensen C10Q which is in fact also very good for clean, nice authentic Blackface voice, but to me it lacked a bit for overdriven settings. Is also less powerful. Also tried a Celestion Greenback, but that was to muddy, missing to much of that nice Fender sparkle.
    Stock speaker is not bad though for home use.
    In the end you can not go really wrong with any speaker in the Super Champ X2 or XD in my opinion. But as said to me the Copperhead and Ragin Cajun seems to be the best upgrade maybe.

      Did you have to juggle the speaker in? The diameter of the magnet on the RC looks huge compared to the stock speaker. Also, does installing a 75w rated speaker mean that you have to crank the volume more to get breakup?

    The difference between the stock Fender speaker and the Ragin' Cajun on amp voice 14 using the Lester was stunning. Sounded like barbed wire with the stock speaker, but full and rich, with great harmonic overtones through the Ragin' Cajun. Thanks for the demo, Jack, and extra points for using both a Fender and a Gibson. Voice 13 is where I mainly live. Great playing, BTW.

      update: I got the RAGIN' CAJUN speaker and installed it in my x2. This has changed my tonal life and rocked my world. I wasn't in love with the amp before, but all that has changed. It's MASSIVE. Jack was certainly not "de-frauding the guitar-player community." I am stunned at the difference it has made, whether playing clean or dirty, and regardless of which guitar I use. Voice 13 is where I mainly live (14 is incredible too). Great playing, BTW. Thank you Jack!!!

    about a week into owning my super champ x2 and i'm absolutely loving it. got it used for about $200 in a nice cream color so i've been considering a speaker upgrade because that would still cost less than the amp straight from the factory. i'm just wary of changing anything as i love it so much as is, but i do wonder if in a small apartment bedroom a better speaker would give it a little more clarity and articulation instead of completely bottoming out which is great if you want to sound like Neil Young in 1976, not so great if you want to maintain a decent relationship with your neighbors lol. all in all fantastic amp and i would definitely recommend it, i was pretty dead set on a 68 RI princeton, but the 16 voices to my ears actually do sound like the amps they model if you fine tune them a bit. if you live or record in a small/sound sensitive space but love the sound of a 59 bassman or a blackface deluxe this is definitely the amp for you. still working on getting channel 8 to sound like a real 65 twin reverb, but it may just be a matter of me not being able to turn the amp up quite enough to get those Eric Johnson vibes.

      The cream colored version with the brownish front? I believe that is the actual Ragin' Cajun version Fender released if I'm not mistaken so you may have that and if so yes the decibel level is noticeably higher than the stock speaker. Try the Eminence "Copperhead" as it's more balanced and the decibel level is a little higher than the stock speaker but more manageable than the RC.

  • @dtmateo

    Yes, there is a massive difference in tone. I don’t think it’s better though. Some clarity got lost in the mids. Sounds like the cajun breaks up easily and squashes the mids. A lot of highs got lost too even with a Strat

    Thanks for posting the video Jack. It's great to see someone who is so passionate about their craft. Personally, I think the RC does sound a bit more full and bold. However, I like the stock speaker. I've had a WGS G10C, a WGS G10 Alnico, a Celection 10 Greenback, and also plugged the SCX2 into my Celestial Blue from my special edition 65 PRRI. To be honest, I'm more upset about Fender stopping support for the Fuse software, when they happily continue to sell the amp, than I am about what speaker is in it. For home use, I'm happy to stick with the stock specially designed Eminence speaker. Keep up the great work!

    I think the speaker that Fender chose for this amp works well. You have to remember with all of the amp's settings in this model, you need a versatile speaker that can handle them. The Ragin Cagin may sound good for a few settings on this amp, but the stock Fender sounds the best for the whole package in general. I wouldn't change it.

      @@JackFossett Yes, Jack, I agree. I love my x2 with the RC. The secret sauce that makes it really chime and ring like bell on channel 1, and which makes for a full massive distortion on channel 2, settings 13 and 14, is an Ibanez TS9 tube screamer (level dimed, gain at 0), and a Wampler ego compressor, blended at around 50/50.

  • @johnbose7454
    @johnbose7454 8 місяців тому

    I went the other way and swapped in a Weber CTC10 25 watt. It retains the highs but they’re sweeter and it adds some full body punch. Lows are tighter. Sounds wonderful driven. As with most digital modeling amps, the voices with compression are the most 3 dimensional and natural. Channel 1 is an above average clean sound but not much better. Voice 3 Tweed Deluxe Dirty and Compressed is where the real magic can happen with this amp. Beautiful cleans with gain at 3 volume at 6. Turn the gain up to about 5 and it starts to breakup very smoothly. Very tweakable. And that voice is fine with pedals as well

  • @mymadeupdreams

    I watched this video to look for a replacement for my Vox VT40X for studio recording. While I do agree that the stock speakers sound much clearer, it doesn't handle overdrive/breakups as well as the Cajuns. It's a lot more apparent towards the end of the video when comparing Voices 13 and 14. My overall vote goes to the Ragin Cajun, after comparing the two the overdriven tones from the stock speakers seem almost unusable.
    Thanks for posting this video, it was definitely helpful

      I have the V40+, predecessor of the VT40X. I replaced the stock 'Korg' speaker with a Jensen C10Q (ceramic antique re-issue). Jensen speakers are used in some older Fender amps, so I wanted a more jangly chimey sound. The Jensen was a very nice upgrade for that tone, but probably no better for the heavy gain settings. The Jensen is 35W rating, so make sure you do not turn the 40X up to its 40W output (and it can go to 60w apparently)! I have a detent on mine to limit it to 35W. Agreed the stock speaker in the SC X2 sounded pretty nasty on voice 14.

    The RC is beefier, it really adds some heft and authority to the tone. I've heard it in other amps and AB'd it to other speakers and it has come out a winner. But I saw your video with the Cannabis Rex and like it even better in that amp.
    Great playing, BTW.

      Thanks! I think they're both good choices honestly its just a stylistic preference. The thing that I'm afraid got lost in the UA-cam videos is that the stock speaker sounds cheap. As far as tonal character goes, its not bad, but quality of sound is a noticeable step down from the others.

      I disagree, the Emminences have by far bigger frequency range... It is in a way where you can explore much more from mids highs and lows without sounding crappy. However, the Fender ones are not bad, they cannot fight against the emminences. I think this is the point.

    I think the Eminence is probably a good upgrade overall. It sounds a little more natural and classic for overdrive and distortion, and I read your comments back to folks, saying it broke in well for clean in time. Two other possibilities are to simply disconnect the internal 10 and use an 8 ohms speaker cabinet of your liking. E.g., I have several 1-12 cabinets and a 1-15 Jensen guitar cab (modified Peavy VK 1-12 enclosure) that work well for that approach. Or, a fellow on eBay (Guitar Hardware) makes real cool replacement cabinets for the whole amp in various coverings and colors, cut for a 12 inch speaker, another way to beef it up and keep it portable as a combo. A bit pricey, but cool to add a 12 and some color or covering options if you really love your Super Champs. See www.ebay.com/itm/Fender-Super-Champ-XD-/262718802330?epid=70299495&hash=item3d2b42c99a:g:3EMAAOSwuMFUe7nH

      PPS His advertisement on eBay has one line where it says XD/XDII, so I think he means it will fit the X2 also. I think the amp section chassis is the same on the XD and X2, but I can't swear to it, since the XD was made in China and the X2 in Mexico. Having owned two XDs, which I still have, and one X2 head which I sold, the XD sounds better out of the box than the X2 to my ears, but you have more features on the X2 now, no doubt, and the Fuse Software might help you dial in your tones better. I just did not want to fool with it, so sold it and the matching cab to partially finance a new Gibson 2013 EB5 on clearance for under $700 with OHSC. That X2 cab is a good way to go too, at only $200 new and sized to fit the head or combos of both the XD and X2.

    I have to agree with the comments that the Cajun sounds muddier than the stock speaker, but..... the stock speaker doesn't seem to have much use unless on stage. It has next to no bottom end and doesn't deliver enough volume. I think that I'll try a Cannabis Rex and see if I can get back somebody that Fender chime while making the amp sound bigger.

    Another fine gear comparison. I have the SCX2 w/ a Celestion Greenback 10", but I'm convinced the available settings on this amp can make a variety of speakers sound good.
    Maybe a 12" would suit it too?

  • @pedrolourenco2707

    The stock speaker is bright and is intended to be used with cabinet emulations. A fair comparison would be stock speaker with cab emulation, against cajun no speaker emulation... that's why the stock sounds better on the darker voices.

    • @JackFossett
      @JackFossett  8 років тому +6

      Thank you sir! Glad you liked it. The only reason for the switch was wanting to do more demos in collaboration with Eminence - these were two speakers we had talked about initially, and decided to eventually do both. Personally I like the Ragin Cajun a bit better stylistically with the way it adds warmth and "power" to the tone. The Alessandro was more in line with classic Super Champ tone, being brighter and crisper. Not sure if I'll ever do a head to head between to the two but its certainly something I'll think about - thanks again!

      I’m sorry I phrased my question poorly. Thank you for your answer it was insightful. What I meant was, have you used the super champ as a head (so to speak) and plugged out of it into the speakers of a hot rod Deville, blues jr or super reverb thus using the power of the super champ x2? Thank you, you are helping shape my ear for tone. That is big!

    I'm not exactly a conspiracy theorist but I'm very happy with the stock speakers that came with my Superchamp XD. Yes, I've got two of them, xd but not the x2 model, because I couldn't resist buying another one when I saw it second hand. I thinks the sounds in XD are better chosen than in x2.
    Of course that the stock speaker can be replaced with something a little better at a cost, but I think that I would put my money in an external cabinet with a good 12 inch speaker, if I need the sound of a 1,000 euro amplifier getting an external 2x12, or even a 4x12, instead of replacing the stock speaker which sounds much better than simply ok in my opinion..

      why do you assume everyone is listening through laptop speakers and iphones? You're talking to a bunch of musicians here. I'm listening through PSB Century 800i tower speakers and a 10" sub, and I have 4 pair of studio quality headphones, a pair of Polk Monitor 10's and a pair of B&W 683 sitting across the room. I'm sure someone else can come along and tell me about their even better speakers. Why assume we are dumbasses?

      unabonger777 70% of UA-cam content is viewed on mobile devices and 18% on laptops via Pew Research. When we create content for UA-cam we always keep in mind the end user’s limitations. I don’t know if there’s any research showing how many of those are using headsets though. His comment is kinda dead on though, kinda funny to listen to a 10 inch speaker though headphones or mobile and expect to hear what that speaker was actually sounding like in the room.

    Did you ever notice any kind of break-in with the Ragin Cajun? I've heard guitar speakers, in general, but especially Eminence speakers, sound way different after a lengthy break in period! Nice demo, btw! I have the head version of the X2 and recently picked up a Fender 2-12 OB (open back) cab to pair it with! Haven't even tried it with the stock 80s Fender Blue Label Speakers and already got an Eminence Texas Heat and Swamp Thang combo to throw in it... maybe I'll do a comparison video of the before and after!

    Hi Jack! Nice playing! I have the x2 for 2 years now. What I'm missing from the stock speaker are highs. The lows are suprisingly huge for a 10" speaker. Don't know if a change of a preamp tube (phase inverter) would do some difference?

    • @JackFossett
      @JackFossett  8 років тому +2

      Hello! Thanks for the kind words :-) I found that initially too with the X2 - unlike the previous XD model, the lows were very boomy and lacked definition, and the top end seemed a little loose. I haven't experimented with changing the tubes, but I've found the speaker swaps helped alot. The Alessandro that I did in a previous video was great for clearer highs, and this Ragin Cajun just makes it sound like a much bigger amp.
