10mm is really thin. I always felt like it could break at any moment. That´s why I glued it to a 8mm glass plate the exact size of the stone with 2k epoxy. Now can use it untill nothing is left without the fear of breaking the stone in half.
that is a polishing stone. grit ratings are relative. super stones are finishing and polishing stones. literally meaning super finishing/polishing stone. that 5k is a superb finishing stone. all you need is a few edge trailing strokes and you are done. I would generally avoiding doing anything else unless you're working on polishing a wide bevel
How is it?? Back in 2003 my first stone is Naniwa super stone grit 1000. I feel its very hard stone and difficult to work with amd since then i never bought a naniwa. But now I find it interesting on naniwa chosera (gouken arata if you want less price,. Chosera without a base)
The chosera will give you better feedback and higher speed. I feel like the superstones are more for scissor and razor sharpeners with their high polishing agent content and hardness. I love the chosera 800 combined with the 3000 😁
@@lofotenknifeworks2278 i just bought kagayaki 3000 and looking for 8k stone for sharpening and polishing yanagiba. Which one do you recommend: 1. Kagayaki 8000 2. Kitayama 8000 3. Suehiro G-3 8000 4. Any other stone recommendations in that price range?? Morihei Hishiboshi 8000 is more expensive and I think I'm not going to use expensive stone for commercial use ( sharpening and everyday touch up) I see you have tried a lot of stone and maybe you can share which 8k do you think is better polish for yanagiba. Slicing fish (sashimi) Thank you 🙏
No, i would absolutely not recommend it for that :) they are quite soft, and that kind of heavy work would dish/wear down the stone fast. Look for a diamond plate, or maybe a shapton 120 for your heavy work. A suehiro LD-21 would also be nice :)
Thanks for the comment. Naniwa is famed for leaving a great polish, even on lower grit stones. Especially the superstone. However while the finish might be comparable to the king 4k (f-3), the king is slower and harder, while the super stone is softer and alot quicker given the 1k grit. i still feel that the king 4k is a tad finer though :)
@@lofotenknifeworks2278 oh! Thanks!! But do tou think i can use the superstone 1000 as a sharpening stone like other brands and line's 1000, or should I just use it as a polishing stone?
@@erickzhou5314 , if you have it you can use it for regular maintenance just fine. But if you are thinking about getting one for sharpening knives, the naniwa pro would be a better choice :)
@@lofotenknifeworks2278 yeah! I already have some kings stones(deluxe 1000, S45 4000 and G1 8000). I just want a good splash n go sharpening stone because I usually don't have time to soak my king I live in Brazil, and here, the naniwa professional stone is VERY expensive (one is more expensive than all my other stones together)
Im thinking about to geting a superstone 5k as a polishing stones folowing my kds 1000 did you mean it polishis out the scratches from the 1k quickly ?
The superstones are soft and will release quite a bit of abrasive compound when you work it. So it will do the job relatively fast yes. However it will also wear a bit faster. The softness of the superstones has made them very popular amongst razor sharpeners. If you are sharpening knives however i would consider looking at the pro/arata/chosera series first, as they are a bit harder but still gives great feedback. You will have the same great results without the wear :) and hey, the shiramine 6k, or rika 5k are also great options if you can stand the 5-10 min soak :)
@@lofotenknifeworks2278 did you tested the skerper professional stones many people say they are just like the naniwa superstones but harder and dont load up as quickly

I have tested some of the superstones but they are not my favorites. The finer grits are loading up terribly. :) I like the traditional series better.
they are good for polishing, finishing and the best for straight razors.

Please, could you tell me what nagura stone are you using in the video to clean the surface of the hones? keep up your good work!
Shure. Its not a nagura though :) it is a medium sabitoru rust eraser.

there is one recent review on them,
they seem to be a mix of traditional stone, 2000 green brick of joy, and the 5000 super stone
It's that 10 mm thickness that keeps me from buying
They have the thin ones and the double thickness
