- Can you hear the lyrics? Well it's just your ears tricking you. The only thing playing in this is piano. Weird isn't it?
To do this with any other song you need to convert an mp3 file to a midi file using the website below and then use anything that can play midi files. The program I used is called MIDITrail.

it's not actually that much of an illusion. every sound in the world is simply a series of differently spaced overtones. you can think of an overtone as a sine wave, which is basically an extremely pure beep. when you layer these overtones in different frequencies and volumes, you can create literally any sound (theoretically).
the human voice also works like this. there's a base frequency, and then there are overtones; what is happening here is that the piano is simply "playing" the overtones that comprise the sound, thereby quite accurately emulating voice. it isn't really an illusion, since this is somewhat how sounds work anyway, just with piano notes instead of the sine waves.

You know the lyrics, your mind plays tricks and recalls it.
Because naturally all sounds consists of a mix of various frequencies which is the ground structure for all kinds of different sounds, instruments and voices. This online converter is able to convert frequencies to a midi-file (at least to an extent) by using the high notes as high frequencies, low notes as low frequencies and mid notes as mid frequencies. That's why you're hearing the voices. It's quite normal.

you turn over in bed feeling drowsy unsure of what time it was, you check your phone sitting on the bedside table for the time. 2:34 AM. you groan at your accidental awakening and decide to get some water. on the way back to your room you hear faint mumbling of a mundane tune. you stop in your tracks to listen more closely, a red light strobing lightly down the hallway. you turn on the light out of fear, the brightness making you feel more secure. you walk back to the main living space of your home. the music was getting louder and louder, what was that song? where was it coming from? you turn around the corner, and sitting against the wall your keyboard is playing all the notes to smashmouths allstar. so well you can almost hear the words....no, you CAN hear the words. you quickly run over to your keyboard thinking it was just a setting on the instrument, but it wasnt even plugged in. the tune was becoming unbearable with its heightening volume and then at all stopped.

This would be nearly impossible to perform in real life, even with multiple people. HOWEVER, this could still be rendered in real time on a real piano using a player piano (either the modern ones that connect to smartphone, or one of the 100 year old ones). There is JUST piano sounds playing, but since its a direct midi convertion from the original song with vocals, it mimmicks the vocal a bit and your brain does the rest.

Sam Rides You misunderstand... The illusion is that the "noise" as you describe it has no vocals, nothing actually sounding induvidually as human voice. It is only piano and no matter how much you argue "its just a robot mimicking human voice" there is still an illusion of the simple fact that we hear words and voices, and a piano can never be anything else sounding than a piano. Thats why people who dont know the songs have a really hard time hearing anything but noise.

The reason this happens is because the digital piano is playing about 20 notes at one to capture all the tones of the human voice making a certain sound. Our voices are never just one note, but a sort of vibrato. By playing this many notes at once, it's able to capture that effect.

An educated guess: The effect is similar to a vocoder, but the pitch is quantized. There also isn't a noise source available as there would be in a classic vocoder so fricatives aren't properly synthesized.
