Is it ok for a straight guy to be on team Harper(well really team Abby)? although I thought Riley was a really good friend above and beyond. Or is that weird?

For me, I don’t hate Harper because she isn’t coming out to her family in a timely manner. It’s because she lies to Abby over and over, gives her the cold shoulder, ditches her in situations she doesn’t have to (that weird hanging out with her ex thing?), displays selfishness in her relationship with her sisters, etc. etc. etc. That being said, I started sobbing in my gf’s arms after we finished watching this and came out to my family a week and a half later lmaooo

Am I the only one who thought that Kristen Stewart’s acting was the most natural and un-awkward she’s ever been?! She just seems so much more comfortable in her own skin since coming out... really nice to see!
She's actually a pretty good actress it's just she's been cast in roles that are shitty or been too repressed herself. She was enjoyable in Charlie's Angels (everyone gives it hate but it's cute and it gives me gay vibes)

My favourite thing about this movie is hulu being like: here is a lesbian christmas movie with happy ending. Us: ACTUALLY, we want Abby and Riley together.

@@andria8279 sure. The actual story is Abby getting together with Harper. Abby crossing ways with Riley is only a temporary branch in the story, in the time where Abby ends between the chairs. We also think it was maybe more accidental that a new door opened with this additional happening.
“Fans cut” idea actually sounds like a good idea. It would both shut up people that complained about how it should have gone and show fans alternate endings to compare.
@@kayhaven4710 It's really not that deep. I just haven't really enjoyed any since I was a kid, and find them very repetitive. Haven't really felt the "Christmas feeling" from any of them and movies that are specifically about celebrating a holiday don't do it for me. I don't even like Nightmare Before Christmas, and that's the closest I get to enjoying one.
I hate christmas movies too, but this was more about the characters than christmas. That part was just the backdrop to get the characters in one place. It didnt seem like a /christmas/ movie. Also yes, do it for Kristen
I love the fact that the political, conservative father is played by a gay man. It just flips the script on how straight people are asked to play gay all the time but rarely the other way around.
Victor Garber also is just good at radiating “smug jerk in a position of power”. He’s often cast as such in movies, which made this role thankfully a bit of change from that in that he’s not all bad and has a change of heart.
I love that is sounds like Abby is lying 😂 that's the same line someone who is not an orphan, the roommate, nor friend or acquaintance, which makes it so much better
Good for you, girl! Treat the queen with the love and respect she deserves! 😭😭 By the way, can you ask her to look at this freckle on my arm? I always thought it was a freckle but now it looks like a mole? I'm not sure, but-
Okay, but for real: If you're gonna be in the closet during your gay relationship, TELL YOUR PARTNER ABOUT IT UPFRONT. It can be super triggering for someone to be placed in that position AGAIN, so make sure they're okay with it and that you both understand the entirety of the situation.
Harper literally didn't do one single thing the whole movie to make me like her. Were we even supposed to like her? We didn't even get the chance to get to know her at the start bc their whole relationship was summed up in those pictures. We really only see who she is from the first car ride and onwards, and it's not good. Yes, coming out is hard and terrifying, but it doesn't justify everything she put Abby thru. I did feel a little sad when Harper came out and Abby said it was too late (bc I'm an empath duh), but I didn't feel bad for Harper. A story needs to have consequences, Harper needed to learn that her actions weren't okay. But obvs they scrapped all the consequences, the parents did a complete 180 personality-wise, and everything that had been set up throughout the film suddenly didn't matter anymore bc tRuE lOvE aNd ThE mAgIc Of XmAs. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO WAS GODDAMN FRUSTRATED WITH THE ENDING??
I was frustrated with the whole thing. I'm straight, but was totally looking forward to a funny, compelling romance between women in the movie. Then the movie was mostly about stress and shame, using some stale clichés. Felt like a bait-and-switch from the marketing. Harper was immature and selfish, and Abby just seemed really lonely. Dan Levy's monologue about coming out and Aubrey Plaza playing a mature, sympathetic character for once were the only redeeming factors for me. Lesbians deserve a better rom-com... actually, WE ALL deserve better lesbian rom-coms.
The script writer seemed to lose sight of what had actually gone on in the film. Harper being in the closet wasn't a valid excuse for a lot of the bad things she did, nor was coming out of it somehow redemptive for her bad actions. Lying to her girlfriend for MONTHS about a major life event? Staying out until all hours with an ex (when she promised she wouldn't) and then blaming her concerned girlfriend for being worried? Harper was just an awful person for most of the movie. And most of her worst actions weren't her being the closet, just her being an asshole of a person.
We’re not awful for wanting Abby to end up with Riley, Harper is awful for how she treated Abby. I was so excited for this movie and the ending seriously disappointed me.
Riley was a bad ass and she was amazing Harper was so annoying and awful and what was the point of inviting your girlfriend or boyfriend or partner to your place without telling them first but it’s understandable that it’s hard to come out to your family but still she left Abby alone at the house and at a party without talking to her or making the promises you made!
I think this happened for most of us because we see Harper at her worst most of the time. I wished we would have had more of their relationship before going to the holidays, maybe we would be more attached to that relationship that way
It literally happens the first ten minutes. First Harper says Abby should spend time with her family for Christmas. Next she says let not go. Then she admits she lied about coming out to her parents as they’re _driving_ to there. They screwed up the gay couple within ten minutes and just goes down the drain after they keep going to the house. This infuriating. And now it’s worse when the director is an actual lesbian. How does this get so screwed up so quickly? Should’ve either shown the good early part their relationship or have Abby move on with Riley.
That actually was one issue with the movie that is really problematic. Your kids don't get into open competition for your affection unless you are narcissists. Yet they had 1 incident where truths come out, and within 24 hours they are 1 big happy well adjusted family. I can see how that incident could be an inciting factor in the family recovering, but it would take years of therapy to reach the level of well adjustment that we see. It might have been good to see the parents making arrangements to see a therapist to help them, and their children reach the normalcy of a healthy family.
"Can you think of another movie where people are so largely rooting against the protagonist because another character is a good love interest" may I introduce you to alice Cullen?
OMG a thousand times YES!!! Actually I'm not even like super into that ship (though I do like the idea), I am just 1000% over Edward and Jacob. But I'm also 1000% over Bella, which is why I don't totally ship her with Alice. I love Alice and she deserves better.
It's only fair that more LGBT representative romcoms be made. The straight community has suffered them alone long enough. Now to get some more lifetime thrillers made where the protagonist is a man who almost overnight falls head-over-heels in love with an upper-middle class older man whose husband disappeared under mysterious circumstances, he can have a flamboyantly straight friend who starts getting suspicious and asking questions before mysteriously disappearing as well.
@Gnome Gay oh my goodness same!!! I watched the film with a friend and we totally wanted Abby to leave Harper for Reily at the end, I didn’t think anyone else thought the same thing but I’m glad I found somebody who agreed because h o l y-
Look, there's something that no one is talking about, and that is the mother. I spent the whole movie hating on her and calling her a Karen, but for me the biggest plot twist was when their daughters came clean and told them how toxic their parenting was... and that woman instantly told the father that they made a mistake and they should be better. I cried. I was so proud and happy. And, in the end, when her instagram page appeared and they were so happy and she was so supportive of Harper and Abby's relashionship... she really surprised me in the best way possible.
I think she felt pressure to be perfect as well because of her husband being part of the city council. She understood how her daughters felt more than anyone I suppose
Lol everyone quotes the "I'm not hiding you, I'm hiding me," line. It's a decent line, but it's inherently false. By hiding herself she also hides Abby. She has a lot of reasons but she just seems selfish and hurts everyone she's in a romantic relationship with
This! It’d be a lot more understandable if she’d told Abby that she wasn’t out early enough Abby could have made an informed decision instead of being asked to hide herself when they were already on the road. “I’m not just hiding you, I’m hiding myself” or “I’m hiding us to hide myself” would have shown a lot more self-awareness and still been impactful.
Especially since one of the things she asks of Abby as they're walking toward the house for the first time is "don't tell them you're gay, either." Like...yes, that is hiding someone else, Harper. What the hell.
I understand the thirst but also I understand the fear that Harper has and I’m an only child and I don’t want to come out and disappoint my parents but also I don’t want my possible S/O to feel bad or left out because I’m not out and holy mom, the struggle is real.
@@TheMangoOfAMAZING I know you mean poly in another way, but I couldn’t help imagining you meant it as in “Poly Pocket” (because you are so tiny 🤗 ) hahahahha
Just like you, I think that Riley and Abby would have been really good together (let's face it, Aubrey Plaza has chemistry with everyone), but also, just like you said, if we would've seen Abby and Harper's relationship a bit more at the beginning, and not just a montage, it would have made everything better
I think it ties to the thing Amanda says at the end. We just want gay movies where being gay is not a plot point. The potential relationship between Kristen Stewart and Aubrey Plaza would be exactly that, a "bad relationship rescue" romcom. Plus they are both hot and I hate that we wasted Aubrey Plaza playing a lesbian for such a small character
2:05 "Get yourself a tall queen" I'm a bi girl, very tall and I've always wondered how it would be to kiss a short girl. Ever since that scene where Harper slides down against the wall to kiss Abby I'm dying to try it.
I dated a girl shorter than me in high school, it was the most adorably awkward thing I ever done in my life (because I’m so use to being the short one, I’m only 5’4). Now my boyfriend is taller than me (and he’s starting to hit a little growth spurt) so he always stands next to me and goes, “Did you get shorter?” However, I wear heels most of the time, which evens out our height.
I’m 5’1” over here. I do have a boyfriend, but if we ever break up, any of y’all are welcome to try. I’ve heard staircase kissing can be nice for people who have big height differences. I’ll have to try it with my boyfriend because he’s almost a foot taller than me.
I'm 5'8'' and my girlfriend is 5'2''. I can confirm that it feels super nice and sweet to kiss someone shorter, but for me the best things about this height difference are: perfect for forehead kisses, you can tuck her under your chin, your shirts are oversized on her and that makes her 1000000x times cuter, and she can hear your heartbeat when you hug. Cons: club dancing face to face is a bit awkward and I constantly have to bend down. Regardless of height, at the end of the day, all queens deserve queens (if they want them)
Wait no i just realized this watching this video. Harper getting mad at Abby "keeping tabs on her" just for making sure she got home safe and then later Harper saying she used what John taught her to track Abby. It should've been Riley smh.
Makenzie Davis' character was unlikable. I kinda wanted her girlfriend to end up with her ex. Edit: you're right that the script was written against Davis' character.
I feel like that makes it a much better movie. Rooting for the main characters is boring, life isn't that simple. I realize romcoms have nothing to do with real life but that's why they suck. I would totally watch this with my girlfriend if I had one
It might have been nice if they had a few more minutes in the beginning to establish how good Harper could be to Abby when she wasn't anxious about what her parents would think and how that would affect the affection she wanted from them. That might have made it easier to forgive Haper at the end and to see how the relationship could return to a good place. Alternatively, they could have shown Harper being manipulative and controling towards Abby so that this could be a dark romance instead of the more traditional light hearted romance. Still better than anything on the Hallmark channel.
@@torfinnzempel6123 I think the parents being way less self-aware would have done a lot to make it darker. A family like that would never say "I'm sorry we made you think our love was conditional," finding out both of their favorite kids had lives weird lives would have taken some time to process. I know a family exactly like them and while they would adapt eventually, it wouldn't be a cathartic moment, I can tell you that lol. It might also make you feel worse for Harper. If they meant to write her as the villain they did a good job though, it's hard to say
once it was revealed she not only outed Aubrey Plaza’s character but went with the whole “she’s a lesbian that’s obsessed with me its so weird and stalkerish, help” trope, her character was ruined, imo. they should’ve just had it be her ex boyfriend asked her out, and bc they were secretly dating she said yes to the date to not be sus, and they ended up breaking up and she was devastated.
@@abbynicole4515 yes, outing her girlfriend and then reputiating her like that was extremely shitty thing to do, and it is ment to shock us, and we see that Abby was shocked by this revelation as well. Haper's only real defense is that she was 14/15 and a freshman in highschool at the time, so still very immature, but it was still really shitty. I do think, they really could have opened this movie up to be a dark romance very easily with only a few minor tweaks to the script. Give hints to Haper being abusive towards Abby. Not physically, but psychologically. They could have spent 5-10 minutes in the beginning of the film showing Haper doing to Abby some of the same things her parents did to her, where when Abby does things she doesn't like, she withholds her affection from Abby, and when Abby does things she does like, she is overly affectionate. Locking Abby into a cycle of constantly fearing "disappointing" Harper but also desperate to seek her approval. They could show how Haper was recreating the same dynamoc with Abby that she grew up with with her parents. They could even do this in just 1 scene, In their apartment, Abby is alone and makes a dinner reservatiom at a fancy exclusive super hard to get into restaurant, Harper gets home and Abby tells her about the reservation all excited. Harper complains about being tired and maybe she's just going to go straight to bed. Abby looks panicked but then blurts out thet they could go on the Christmas tour that she knows Haper likes. Harper smiles and gives Abby a big affectionate hug, maybe a snog before heading out for the tour, and then we pick up at the beginning of the movie with them on the tour were we find out why Abby wouldn't have wanted to go on it. Since we discover later in the movie that Abby moved into Harper's apartment maybe they could have shown us that this was Haper's idea, not Abby's. That Maybe Abby had renewed her lease say 2/3 months earlier and Harper only had 1 month left on her lease, so that Abby having to break her lease caused her a big financial problem, but Harper moving in with Abby could have been simply a matter of letting her lease expire. we could end the movie in 1 of 2 ways. 1: Abby forgives Harper but, and this is critical, they start seeing a couples therapist who helps Abby to be more assertive in the relationship about her own needs and wants, and to help Harper to relearn how to act and treat people, essentially to unlearn the behaviors her parents taught her so that Abby and Harper can have a healthy relationship going forward. 2: Abby leaves Harper finally realizing her own self worth and how toxic the relationship is, Haper also realizing now that she was treating Abby the same way her parents treated her, starts seeing a therapist so she can relearn how to treat the people she cares about.
Yeah that’s a big red flag. Like, Harper didn’t even reach out to apologize as a grown adult. I understand sometimes you’re not ready to come out, and stuff like this happens all the time. But a healthy person would’ve reached out to really apologize for putting someone through stuff like that.
@@sgtmian I’m not saying people don’t make mistakes, but the problem here seems to be the fact that Harper keeps repeating them. And this isn’t like “oh no I locked myself out again” level of mistake, this is “I’m gonna emotionally damage you and ruin your reputation” level of mistake.
Me and my friends literally screamed when we saw the trailer then ran over to my friends house to watch it, half of us are bi, we need the good gay representation
Harper, to me, didn’t deserve another chance. She had more than enough times to make things right with Abby. Honestly, Riley and Abby together made me feel like it wasn’t enough chemistry there to be anything more than friends. I think Riley could tell that Harper wasn’t being honest about her sexuality and felt bad for abby before she talked about her past with Harper. Every time they ran in to each other, Harper wasn’t there half the time. Also, I applauded abby breaking it off with Harper the way she did and would have preferred her to not take her back. Plus, even if Riley went after abby when she left the house, I wouldn’t see how abby’s character would want to move on with Riley, seeing as how she was broken hearted and feeling lost, I mean, she was ready to marry her! It wouldn’t make sense.
I personally was one of the people that really liked Abby and Riley together but you're right that it wouldn't be realistic. I wish the movie showed us more that they were a couple that loved each other to the point of wanting marriage instead of just telling us that and then making us root for a break up lmao
@@aenbywerewolf3859 I condemn the crimes against humanity as every sane person, everyone is free to do what they want as long as they don't hurt others, I don't know why you would think that of me.
As a straight dude I kinda felt she was gay since the panic room and that other movie she did as a kid. Turns out she's more Bi than gay but it was kinda obvious she liked woman more it seems.
You know what I realized? In a traditional rom com, Harper would be the typical main character, and you would see her messing up comedically from her point of view and then we root for her when she makes the grand gesture to redeem herself at the end. Lol as it is she literally the antagonist of the movie.
I think The Family Stone might be the (mostly) straight version of this story, & the main character does not end up with the dude she came with in the end.
That was my biggest issue. The pro-Harper arguments I've seen have all been, "We're supposed to empathize with her! She's supposed to be someone we connect with and understand." But the movie's writing doesn't give us a chance to do that. We always follow Abby and see Harper's actions through her eyes. POV is everything, and we never see anything humanizing for Harper.
"Have you managed to get a man's permission to take ownership of an adult woman" fucking _slayed_ me! I've never had my opinion on asking someone's dad for their daughter's hand in marriage phrased so perfectly before 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Harper is completely unlikeable from what you described. Riley is the one who treats Abby with respect. I’m not sold on Harper deserving a second chance. Also, Mary Holland is a national treasure!!
Oh this movie made me cry. I LOVED the visual storytelling of the two bars we saw. The gay bar, where Abby and Riley went when they couldn't deal this The Straights anymore looked like so much fun! I could see my friends going there every weekend (when you could still go to bars). Then the bar that Harper was at looked SOOOO midwestern straight people bar. Prefect! *chef kiss

Facts! It’s so annoying how Harper wanted to hang out with her friends and ex and then she wanted to have space and then she lied to her parents and treated Abby like crap throughout the whole movie
I thought this movie would be really predictable. It actually wasn't. I watched it because Kristin (obliviously). But the storyline was really good, flow between scenes actually made sense. The way that Harper's sister outed her I thought was disgusting. Immediately after Abby's character explaining how she's frustrated and doesn't want to be with somebody who isn't out publicly I can identify with. But her friend quickly assured her that Harper being out or not out has nothing to do with her and I thought that was a really good point they made. I think a lot of times bisexual and gay people are pressured by the people around them to be out but if they're not ready they're not ready. But overall I thought this movie actually touched on a lot of things and was really fairly representative of different points of view.
i had SO many feelings about this movie. first off, i feel like 99% of the characters were insufferable... like the only few i actually liked were riley, abby, jane, and john... YEAH, i hated harper for how she treated abby and did not feel she need deserved a second chance that quickly. and i get that they were trying to give it a happy ending i know it's a christmas movie, but, as a bisexual woman who cannot come out to her parents because i am almost certain i would be disowned, i need a movie that has some realism because i feel like it's rare in media. at the very least make the parents need some time, like give it a year and then they've accepted it, but to immediately include abby in the family photo, it's not realistic for a lot of families. again, i know it's a christmas movie so maybe this isn't the one to gripe about but i'm starving for some tragedy here! lastly, abby should've absolutely ended up with riley for many reasons but mostly because AUBREY PLAZA. sidenote: i live in pittsburgh and had a chance to be an extra in that drag scene i had my call time and everything. i will never ever forgive myself for prioritizing sleep over being in a tiny bar with aubrey plaza and kristen stewart.
OH MY GOD YOU COULD'VE MET THEM?!?!? 😲😱 Anyway to your main point: yeah the immediate acceptance was unrealistic especially when we think back to the lifestyle comment at the beginning. The Instagram thing was cute and I liked that. I feel like they could've had Abby and Harper and John go home/go to Sloane or Jane's house and had Christmas there and then we see a year later and one/both of the parents reaches out and then they talk. Or maybe the mom sees on Instagram how happy her daughter is and sees her and Abby visiting Sloane and Jane and then maybe runs into them at the book signing? Idk and then we get them unplanned going to the movie maybe? And then we get the same after credits ig stuff. Idk that would just feel more realistic.
If they made this movie in the way you wanted people would probably complain about "another gay film not having a happy ending" You can't win with everyone.
Jane’s whole story very much feels like someone who has like adhd or autism and as someone with adhd I related to Jane so so much the scene where she said she was apart of this family broke me
Better yet, Abby and Harper remain good friends (but Harper still is awkward and not confident in her own skin) and are now both single. Then show Riley more. 🙊🙊🙊
I'm a hetero married man and even I felt the awful anxiety for Abby. If I were in her shoes I would have bailed so fast. Also the best part of Harper's speech to Abby is John off to the side looking at her and mouths the words "Do it"
Was there anybody else in tears by the end of the movie? I was. I'm also an old straight guy that bought into a Christmas movie about lesbian lovers who come to terms with their relationship with lots of awkward moments, wacky characters, twists and turns, and conflicting emotions along the way...and then the tears of joy start to flow. Ya gotta 💖 this movie!!!
For real! Harper was messing up left and right, but when Abby told her it was over.. Harper's face and entire body looked like her world had just crumbled. Mackenzie Davis knocked that out of the park. The whole cast was amazing.
Are lesbians supposed to like find someone near their own height? Is this some weird convention I'm not aware of? The only pairing that I was aware was taboo was a short man and a tall woman
@@alisaurus4224 Might have just been a director choice, like the director wanted the scene to look a certain way and they figured looking down at her wouldn't give the vibe they were going for. Although 15 inch difference, that does seem like a logistical problem. Must kiss you on top of the head like a kid all the time lol
I believe Amanda alluded to this, but what I would like to see is something like this RomCom where being closeted is not the conflict - and of course this story is one that resonates because there are so many people who fear being out to their families. Hopefully this is just the first of many. Representation matters. 💕🌈👍🥰
You might have already seen it, and might disagree with me categorizing it as a romcom, but I sincerely recommend "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" on Netflix to tick those boxes for you.
"Saving Face" was written and directed by Alice Wu, who just recently did "The Half of It." It's a gorgeous little romcom gem where the main IS closeted to her Chinese family, but while it's part of the situation it's not really the main conflict? I feel like it was handled much better there than in "Happiest Season" anyway.
I agree that there should be more romcoms where everything is the standard but the couple is the same gender, but secret-keeping is such a staple of RomComs that it really makes sense that screenwriters grab onto the natural secret that comes gift-wrapped with writing gay romance. To be fair, the secret-keeping plot for me is a whole lot more tolerable when the secret involved is something more grounded and relatable, compared to ridiculous secrets like "we're both together because of a bet" (many variations exist), "I'm both your love interest and pretending to be my own twin brother, your roommate, to play soccer on the boys team", "I've switched places with the princess because we're identical strangers I'm really a middle-class American", "The prince is secretly adopted and his nanny is secretly a reporter who snuck into the palace and then lied about her qualifications to get a story," or "I'm secretly the owner of the big box bookstore down the street trying to get yours shut down," or "any fake dating story" (many variations), ect ect ect. But that's just my personal taste-- both ridiculous romcoms and ones with more grounded conflict should exist.
@@MegaKaitouKID1412 You make a lot of sense here. I don’t know why I enjoy smarmy movies like the ones you describe. Completely unrelatable, right? It wasn’t perfect but I still had an amazing time watching it and I know I’ll rewatch it over and over again. And I for one am glad Abby and Riley didn’t end up together, they’ve only known each other for 2 days when Abby is obviously very much in love with Harper, plus I love me some wlw friendships that stay platonic :)
@@danielachoresh1465 yes! I’d rather see a sequel to happiest season where Abby and Harper wingman for Riley and comedy ensues, instead of indulging in the old “lesbian cheats with the ex literal days after meeting her because her relationship hit a low” trope. Let lesbians be platonic friends!
I know this is super common in romcoms, but did it bother anyone else the way Harper told Abbey she would spend the rest of her life making up for what happened, and all she needed was Abbey and nothing else mattered? That is a recipe for codependency and I really thought Abbey would push back on it.
Yes! I really didn't like that line; like, a relationship shouldn't be about owing each other and paying each other back, it's not about keeping track of who is up on the other. Yeah, not a great line. I would've preferred something more like "I'll never hurt you like that again, I'll do better, I'll be worthy of you." Something like that.
@Halloween All Year Round nothing about that interaction felt sincere or heartfelt, and we already know that Harper is basically unhinged at this point lol

I just wanna say... Abby/Riley supremacy. The scene when Harper said it was a lie in front of Abby? broke my heart
That made me dislike Harper the most honestly.
👏🏾👏🏾
This is the worst ending.
Legit thought her going back to harper ruined everything that came before
I was frustrated with the whole thing.
The biggest kicker for me was harper being mad for “keeping tabs on her,” yet SHE was the one tracking Abby.
Bro literally if they'd have had Riley show up at the end instead of Harper, I would've thrown confetti

I'm a bi girl, very tall and I've always wondered how it would be to kiss a short girl.
My husband is 15 inches taller than me and we make good use of curbs and staircases

Abbie: *Exists*
John: "Tracked."
Just chip her at this point
THE moment that Riley told her side of what Harper did in school.... if I were Abby, I'd bounce right there and go with Riley.
I stan the Riley/Abby ship.
Yeah that’s a big red flag. Like, Harper didn’t even reach out to apologize as a grown adult. I understand sometimes you’re not ready to come out, and stuff like this happens all the time. But a healthy person would’ve reached out to really apologize for putting someone through stuff like that.
Yeah I could never be with someone who did that to someone especially considering howshe was treating her at that moment
you’d dump the person you love for someone you don’t even have feelings for because you found out they made mistakes in the past?
@@sgtmian I’m not saying people don’t make mistakes, but the problem here seems to be the fact that Harper keeps repeating them. And this isn’t like “oh no I locked myself out again” level of mistake, this is “I’m gonna emotionally damage you and ruin your reputation” level of mistake.

I didn't sense any human emotion whatsoever in the very few things I've seen her in so no, I did not sense 'the gay.'
"She's gay Karen not running a pyramid scheme!"
Pov really does change stuff
That was my biggest issue. The pro-Harper arguments I've seen have all been, "We're supposed to empathize with her! She's supposed to be someone we connect with and understand." But the movie's writing doesn't give us a chance to do that. We always follow Abby and see Harper's actions through her eyes. POV is everything, and we never see anything humanizing for Harper.

@@RoKer13 @RoDoz yeah like even if you have to pretend you're just friends and even if you have starchy parents, surely it's understandable that you would want to stick with your friend/guest?? No excuse Harper 😤
Exactly! It annoys me how in these kind of movie one partner always gets ignored and they just put up with it and the other person doesnt even say anything about it. I wouldve left.
Yea and we get a happy ending!!
how are we not suppose to ship abby and riley they have amazing chemistry
i had SO many feelings about this movie.
first off, i feel like 99% of the characters were insufferable... like the only few i actually liked were riley, abby, jane, and john...
Anyway to your main point: yeah the immediate acceptance was unrealistic especially when we think back to the lifestyle comment at the beginning.
Yeah the writing of the family was pandery and didn't feel real
If they made this movie in the way you wanted people would probably complain about "another gay film not having a happy ending" You can't win with everyone.
@@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168 THATS WHAT IM SAYING.

Was there anybody else in tears by the end of the movie? I was. For real! Harper was messing up left and right, but when Abby told her it was over.. Harper's face and entire body looked like her world had just crumbled. Mackenzie Davis knocked that out of the park. The whole cast was amazing.

I am so glad you clocked that tall girl/short girl kiss setup. I cackled when I saw her legs splayed out like that.

@@skeetsmcgrew3282 No, it was just funny how the scene was set up due to the height difference
BAHAHAHAHHSHS I LAUGHED TOO... THAT WOULD BE ME.
Their heights are only a 5-inch difference! Just bend down a bit, dang. My husband is 15 inches taller than i am.
I mean, WHY are there so many Princes and Princesses? And country names like Aldovia, Genovia, etc. ARRGH! It’s like not only do they have to fall in love, one of them has to be rich or live in nowheresville for a year so they can discover that living in a small town is soooooo much better than the big city. And there are always TONS of white people and the best friend who is either gay or black or both- hey, here’s an idea! How about an interracial couple? How about an interracial couple where one of the people is NB?

Then Harper apologizes to which Riley says "I need you to shut the feeeeeuck up and go get Abby back... or I WILL"... Like, I need THAT moment.
