  • Adam is so stoked to get back to the cave after a few weeks of filming abroad, and one of the first things he opens up is a package from luthier Ted Woodford (aka ‪@twoodfrd‬), one of Adam's favorite UA-cam creators. Ted has sent back a 1970's Japanese electric guitar he restored for Adam--documented on his own channel--and Adam completes the build with a few aesthetic additions of his own. Time to break in this shop guitar!

One word of caution: that shelf liner rubber sheeting is great for keeping things in place, but it reacts strangely with some guitar finishing products- I have had it leave marks on guitars finished with nitrocellulose lacquer, so I wouldn't advise leaving a guitar sitting on that stuff for any period of time, or using it as packing material. In case you're curious, this is a 1960's (late) Univox Tempo. There's a couple online in listings you can look up that are complete and original. You can tell this one apart from other models because of the gold, cursive font plate that says "Tempo", there's a couple more that share the Sunburst color scheme, but are not Tempos. Trivia, the tremolo arm was optional, something the owner would have to buy to get.
As a sidenote... i think a lot of people buy these, thinking "MiJ" from today or "yesterday" but then they find out that this is that period of cheaper Japanese products, and they're particularly stumped about it, some quite pissed, if online discussions about them are anything to sniff at. The screws not being standard (JiS) really get a lot of people, hence why these older (60's~mid 80's) pieces have particularly munched screws. All it takes is one twist with the wrong driver bit, and the cheese grade metal is done for.

@@CaptainHoratioPugwashmy favorite brand is lyle, matsumoku made, like arias and the like. quality is pretty hit or miss on lots of these old things, but they’re always pretty neat, and not all that expensive. you definitely got what you paid for when they were new, but now they’re mostly just interesting novelties for collectors. none of my lyles are my go to guitars, but they definitely make it into my playing rotation.

@@asertai have found that i’ve needed to replace the screws on a lot of mine, but that’s hardly a dealbreaker. i recently bought a lyle stratocaster copy from (as best as i can tell) the early 70’s. definitely not an amazing player, but it looks fantastic, and was fairly cheap. the trem “block” was a bit of a surprise though, a simple flat piece of what looks like extruded aluminum with a few holes drilled in it for mounting to the trem plate, and for strings and springs. certainly gave me a good laugh, i’ve never worked on an old strat copy like this before. most of my experience with these things are either hollowbody or fixed bridges.

I have resurrected several vintage guitars and love bringing them back to life. Don't worry too much about fixing the bumps and bruises, people seem to want to pay good money to have someone beat up their guitars these days just so they look road worn. Yours has actual wear for the 40+ years it's been around. From the holes in the headstock I would guess it was originally a Silvertone and the Conqueror label is from an Ibanez, but probably made at the same factory.

Something comical about seeing the Orange Micro Dark just sitting on top a Blackstar cab XD Looks like it could be either a 1x12, or maybe a 2x10? The guitar is absolutely gorgeous and has that right amount of wear to show it's been loved and used. Also just love that he cut his own truss rod cover rather than just buying one XD Probably would have been cheaper than buying the entire pickguard to cut down hahaha

Try your local gun shop, they should have some "cold blueing solution" that you could stain the existing grub screws.

In the 90s I worked at a music store after college, that was ran by a band mate -- he was a luthier too.
I studied electronics so initially I fixed the amps and we created the ultimate distortion combo peddel, because electronics wasn't his thing. But later on I learned to setup guitars, fix them, resprayed a couple after patching holes and dents. It was a rewarding job and one that I learned to loathe Gibson guitars! The most serious broken guitars that came in! The idiot who designed that headstock didn't realise that the angle was too steep and the slightest fall would just shatter it. Even Epiphone Les Pauls were cheaper and more reliable because the angle of the head stock was less steep and also stayed intune some what better. The best jobs for me as a shredder was to hot rod guitars. The early 90s was the tail-end of the hot rod scene. But nothing made me more happy than getting a good strat and yank off that horrible 6 screw flimsy bridge take the routing template of a Floyd Rose and hack that body up to accommodate that. And then pull the neck through the drill press and route out the nut to accommodate the locking nut. And put in nice Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge. Whilst my friends would actually turn the neck into a compound radius neck and do his magic on the fret board making it from a 10" to a compound 10-12".
